When Was Cumbia Born?
So when did this musical mixture get its start? Historians trace its origins to the late 1600s, when areas along Colombia's Caribbean coast were part of a Spanish colony. When settlers from Spain arrived in Colombia in the 1500s, they brought with them more than 100,000 African slaves. Through the generations, the slaves' descendants never lost touch with their African cultural roots. They continued playing the music handed down by their ancestors.
Native South Americans living nearby knew a good thing when they heard it. Soon, elements of African, native South American, and Spanish music mingled to create a new style. And it's believed that this wide array of musical influences eventually harmonized into cumbia as we know it today.
What Sets Cumbia Apart?
The answer might lie in the three continents that contributed to the unique musical style. First and foremost is its distinctive rhythm, which is one of the musical elements that started in Africa. Also from Africa are the drums which traditionally play the cumbia beat: the tambora (bass drum), tambor alegre (midsize, "merry" drum), and llamador (small, "calling" drum).

Other key players in cumbia are three flutes native to Colombia: the gaita macho, gaita hembra, and the flauta de millo. The third continent in the trio of cultural contributors to cumbia is Europe. Spanish culture influenced cumbia choreography and the costumes dancers wear (such as the swirling skirts). Today, cumbia is practically everywhere throughout Latin America. Its bouncy beat can be heard from bus stations to beach cafés, from backyard barbecues to wedding receptions.
