Huge thanks for all the comments and feedback. I have already filmed Sunday's video and said I may part with this BUT your comments here have definitely got me thinking that this might now be a keeper!
Learn what you have back to front before getting something new. Also embrace the cheap brands like Donner and Behringer which are often just as good as the expensive brands.
You cant go wrong with this compressor. 1) EHX makes solid gear 2) This specific model is digital so it's pretty clean and works sweet as a drum leveler but can also go into a bit more aggressive compression. 3) The price is pretty on the lower side for a good compressor. Next would be FMR RNC which is more expensive and then you arrive at the multiple hundreds euros. 4) its stereo. Not all pedals are stereo to the Tone: A low pass filter is a high cut filter. It's just semantics. Low Cut= High pass (cause it removes Low content under the set frequencies) and High Cut= Low pass filter (cause it removes High content frequencies above the set value) . It's just two schools of thought and confusing for many. Not trying to smart ass here. Just writing this for people that don't know the definitions The Warm audio is a bit over the top for compressing a sampler output and makes you "stationary" as you cannot take it with you. Unless you want to go deeper into mixing and mastering in which case you will highly likely want to export the stems and mix+master them in a better suited environment like a Daw and a good speaker+room combo I believe you made the perfect choice with the EHX
Appreciate that feedback and the info too. 🙏 I definitely think I've made the right choice for now. This and the new bit of gear I'll be sharing on Sunday is a very decent step in the right direction.
ooh that thing sounds nice bro! also I think the swell feature could be cool to add to vocals or synths but before you add the drums! In a world where we are constantly implored to spend our hard earned money it's difficult to determine what to buy, but I think you made a good purchase. It's small, portable, and adds some nice compression/grit to your beats. Cheers!
Ooh I didn't know about this, definitely tenpted to pick it up. You might want to look into Elektron Analog Heat MK2 as well as far as outboard FX goes. Adds a certain something that can't really be achieved with digital FX!
@@spvidz owned a Heat, and I prefer this. On paper the Heat has more features, but I only used the saturation on it, and I prefer overdrive on this + the comp.
I'd have to do some more experiments. I'm not sure how useful it is on a full stereo mix, I think it most likely works best on individual notes. Could be interesting for samples though!
nice! you can't wrong with more effects, especially since you've the sampler side of things nailed down. You might want to run signal from the sx, through the pedal then onto the mk2....
Yeah there are so many combos. Kind of agree too it is nice having other gear to play around with. I’d like to do a comparison against the 303 compressor
We get fascinated with the pretty new samplers, and I've been guilty, but what you said makes sense. I wanna add to what I already have and enhance my sound, and I bought a Hologram Microcosm efx pedal to add to my sound!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
As an engineer I'd not recommend buying outboard compression for "bettering" your sound. Flexible and good options start at 3k. And that's where they start to match good plugins. Unless you need the zero latency I think they have have become a pretty redundant luxury.
id say a pre amp is more important initially when upgrading to outboard processing. UAD76 pedal interests myself, even though i have an HA successor compressor.
Interesting yeah, I had seen pre-amps mentioned a lot when starting an outboard set-up. I think even for my vocals for these videos a pre-amp could be a benefit
I have a second hand drawmer mx30 from way back in the 90s which I got for around 135 quid I think and it has such a great lofi analogue colour. the only downside is its auto so you have no attack or release control, it varies it automatically depending on the input it detects. It was a really pleasant surprise how dirty and fat it sounded tho. It's also a rack mounted unit. A really nice but more expensive compressor is the too boum which is about 500 quid I think, but unfortunately looks like they're not for sale anymore
@@spvidz yeah, I think its a undiscovered gem possibly, at least for lofi sounds, filthys the sound up a lot! That platform tho makes a big positive difference on your demo tho imo
Hi SP. Cool choice. I'm curious how it works out. I've been experimenting with my Zoom MS70CDR and my MK2. The Zoom is a multiFX stompbox that also carries a few compressors. It's a rather budget type of multiFX, but I like it. Bought it initially for a small analog synth I have. It's a bit harder to diall in.... Anyways, cool to see you experimenting with stuff as well. Take care, DD. 👍
Nice! I've been looking at this same compressor, for the same reasons (stereo, not overly expensive). Still haven't bought it but this video is making me want to haha
I don't blame you for getting rid of this compressor after the Analog Heat. Frankly, this compressor doesn't really sound that great. It's a bit of a tone suck and it sounds too squashed. I recommend checking out the Heritage Successor, which is my current favorite. The TK Audio BC1-THD with some more extreme settings for color is also nice (otherwise it's just a bus comp). There is really no pedal-compressor option I would recommend. I know price is a factor, but you can get something nice used for around $1k and it will be a forever piece. That said, I would also not recommend the Warm Audio stuff since that also seems to be a tone suck.
I think the 303 could serve me better as a compressor than this pedal but we will see. I will definitely be doing a ton of comparison videos with this to see what will give me the best/my favorite sound
Dope, love the hardware because of the knobs but since it's digital I'm not sure if it's better than my compressors in ableton 😅 I've got some great replica plugins which weren't cheap and sound great too (being digital and all) I'm looking at the analog heat for the drive and eq in mastering chain but still on the fence about it because of the price vs quality upgrade
I'm having a similar trail of thought. I definitely want to do some more comparisons with both digital gear and my SPs! The Analog heat looks so good...! Stay tuned for the sunday drop 😉
I wasn't fully sold until I've seen all the reactions haha. Yeah I'm glad I've opted out of that for now, seems like an incredibly expensive rabbit hole!
Personally as im entirely dawless, i run through a compressor, eq and limiter. Definitely adds to your sound! I highly recommend a dbx 160x, well priced and a great compressor
Huge thanks for all the comments and feedback. I have already filmed Sunday's video and said I may part with this BUT your comments here have definitely got me thinking that this might now be a keeper!
Uh oh… falling down the effects pedal rabbit hole is dangerous. Source: someone help me out of this hole?

😂😂😂
The swell would be really dope on various parts. Probably not meant for whole tracks but I could imagine it sounding dope to run a synth through it.
Yes definitely not for a full mix. It’s intended for single guitar notes I think. Could come in handy for sample processing 👍
it definitely does something good to the signal . looking forward to see what else you picked up
Compressors make the difference. Glad you made this video. I’ve been looking at the UA 1176 pedal. I went with a behringer mdx2600 for the time being.

Gonna be an Analog Heat isn't it
👀

Do you think the swell knob could be used for a side chain ducking type effect?
I'd have to do some more experiments. I'm not sure how useful it is on a full stereo mix, I think it most likely works best on individual notes. Could be interesting for samples though!
Yeah cool. I think it’s good compressor for this price. I have some ideas with swell knob too ;) have fun with your new pedal ✌🏼
Thanks a lot. I’m definitely going to spend a bit more time with that, possibly for sample processing!
Check out the UAD MAX pedal, amazing compressor. If you want something wilder (but fully analog) you can’t go wrong with either RNC and RNLA too!
Thanks 🙏
how do you make so many videos?! consistency is impressive my guy
Thanks man, the grind is real 🙏
I'm hoping the other bit of gear is an analog heat mk2. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on it
All will be revealed on Sunday! 😉

Wow that's a big difference! Sounds a lot clearer and more polished, did it increase the volume (dB) or is that all compression?
I think I should have level matched the examples to hear the difference better but it does have clean boost which I didn’t mention in this video 👍
I think it’s worth saying that while I’m glad the sp has two compressors both lack threshold which makes it difficult to control.

I've seen that used too, looks like a nice bit of kit!

Hmm this is pretty cool.
Definitely an interesting piece of gear. Gotta make a decision soon but might try and squeeze out a few videos first! Thanks for tuning in bro 👊

nice but prefer to go stereo t analog to smooth the mix
