Man i remember this song so much. I came out on their Fandango Album. I remember back in 1977 with my buddy we were it 10th grade. He is a Native American and he had fishing rights. When we were sophmores he was the only one that had a ride. He had a brand new 1977 Dodge Power Wagon all tricked out. We would sit outside the liquor store and ask someone to buy us a jug of Black Velvet. We would cruise for hours in that truck and listen to this album over and over and over. Man i miss those days.
Awesome vid... I have loved this song for years and years and years.. love the tempo..love the nasty sound..wished it was longer and here it is on youtube.. love this!!!!
Fucking awesome!!!! from the best band on the planet, ZZ TOP. Even after 40 years they are still brilliant as the Live from Texas video proves. Hope to see them at Download!!! Rock on forever dudes.
One of the most catchy, time-less riffs in their repertoire and therefore in general. Terrific choice for this prestigious, contemporary music tv-show.
It's in Elimination. It's a post Eliminator and pre Afterburner book about the band. Can't remember if it was Billy who described it himself or a journalist.Need to dig it out and have a read actually. Not read it in a while.I can hear where he's coming from, though.
I think so. Mind you he's only been singing this song for 30 years or so. He'll get better with practise. lol, joking aside, they are still probably the best live act on the planet. Long may they continue!
Yes, King, you're correct, it is a Gibson, despite the fact that the logo looks a bit strange around 1:21-1:26. It's apparent on the other two performances from Later: 'Stop Breaking Down Blues' & 'What's Up with That'. If the LP is a custom job, it's a very old one judging from the distressed nature of the top. Could it be a prototype of a model that never went into production? Gibbons gets an amazing tone from the single-coil bridge pick-up. Maybe I can get Gibson to make me a copy.
No, we're both wrong. It's not a Gibson. Check out 'Stop Breaking Down Blues' at around 3:08. Looks like it says 'Tokai' on the headstock. A Japanese replica, I believe. No Tune-o-matic bridge either, just a wraparound tailpiece. Looks great, though.
I assume you are talking about their laid back groove. They definitely have it down cold. Not an easy thing to do either, so many bands sound stiff or hyper when playing blues based stuff.
Er.....come to think of it, he's actually been singing this song nearly 40 years. Looks like Mr. Gibbons isn't the only one who had a senior moment there. I'm now off to stand in the corner wearing a big pointy hat with a "D" on it!
Ha !! oL Top ZZ Topper musta ran into some of that loco weed cause he forgot his lyrics..but oL Dusty and Frank pulled him up out of the mudd. Jools is great...rip roaring fashion OMG...
I possibly didnt explain the last comment. the ZZ Top sound has,in the past been described as sounding like a car with four flat tyres driving on mud.did anybody know what i was talking about ;-) ?
LYRICS : To see if you were at home. Your shade was down, there wasn't even a sound But something told me you weren't alone. What in the world can a nasty dog do But try to get next to you? Don't laugh 'cause it ain't funny. Look how it happened to me. It could happen to you, you could be a fool too And it'd leave you in misery. I guess there's nothin' more funky king can do But to try to get next to you.
pmay222 he has a computer program that starts out with pearly Gates and then they match all his guitars up thru the program...it's a huge rack he uses...I was blown away that he was so active with the newer tech....works for him. I saw it on an older rig run down
Well, I knocked down on your door, baby, To see if you were at home. Your shade was down, there wasnt even a sound But something told me you werent alone. What in the world can a nasty dog do But try to get next to you? Dont laugh cause it aint funny. Look how it happened to me. It could happen to you, you could be a fool too And itd leave you in misery. I guess theres nothin more funky king can do But to try to get next to you. Mm, well.
Question, I just posted a video that I created featureing one ZZ Tops songs and you tube disabled the audio how do you post their songs and get away with it?
What is that guitar the Rev Billy G is playing? It looks like a single (P-90) pick-up Les Paul goldtop. No pick-up selector switch (obviously), no scratchplate & a single volume and tone control. A very unusual guitar. I wasn't aware that Gibson made single pick-up Les Pauls. However, that doesn't look like a Gibson logo on the headstock. The body looks pretty battered but the tone is pure Gibbons. Can anyone shed any light?
@cemott3rd Go and Google "Ken Rodenas". You can see all the BFG's picks. He used both: a quarter and a peso for a pick. BTW I'm gonna see ZZTop the 14th of July here in Italy! I'm so stoked! Cheers man!

100% solid rhythm section here. Gives Billy all the room he needs to drive it on home.
Great performance! They need to do this one live more often.
Dusty gets one of the best bass sounds ever!
Awesome vid... I have loved this song for years and years and years.. love the tempo..love the nasty sound..wished it was longer and here it is on youtube.. love this!!!!

I assume you are talking about their laid back groove. They definitely have it down cold. Not an easy thing to do either, so many bands sound stiff or hyper when playing blues based stuff.
What a groove!
Pearly Gates sounds awesome, bluesrock doesn't get any better than this.
Jools is KICKASS on the harmonica... I wish that whoever uploaded this episode had let it run a few more seconds... DAMMIT!
Jools??? That's James Harman
Er.....come to think of it, he's actually been singing this song nearly 40 years. Looks like Mr. Gibbons isn't the only one who had a senior moment there. I'm now off to stand in the corner wearing a big pointy hat with a "D" on it!

Well you are both forgiven... lol
Heck I always wondered how a band would handle that well in front of a camera... now I know..
I guess the BBC do not persue copyright infringers.
live peak
Great reverend Billi Gibbons, as usual. Thanks to B.P. for the notice.
Just call him Reverend Willie. . . .
Oh yeah. . .
I possibly didnt explain the last comment. the ZZ Top sound has,in the past been described as sounding like a car with four flat tyres driving on mud.did anybody know what i was talking about ;-) ?
Thanx grim, i couldn't remember the title.
Did Jools say "The ZZ Top". What a dork!

tone is pure gibbons coz it comes from his fingers...he sounds the same on most guitars..... guess he is born with it ...you cant buy that dude..!!!
pmay222 he has a computer program that starts out with pearly Gates and then they match all his guitars up thru the program...it's a huge rack he uses...I was blown away that he was so active with the newer tech....works for him. I saw it on an older rig run down

Fandango jesesus christ can play
Frank Beard is a fucking god
@dealfinderforu You have to include copy right credits to the band and disclaim ownership.
UH-HUH!!!!!!
@pmay222 That and he pinches those harmonics with a Mexican Peso coin, so it is told
@lollo1991 Were you looking with binoculars? Maybe it was a quarter! ;-)>
AHOLE we both love the band, I guess that was to complicated for you to understand the banter...
@zzfanhun Cool! Thanks
@cemott3rd Go and Google "Ken Rodenas". You can see all the BFG's picks.
He used both: a quarter and a peso for a pick. BTW I'm gonna see ZZTop the 14th of July here in Italy! I'm so stoked! Cheers man!
Is Billy playing "Pearly Gate"?, or is it just another gold-top from his collection?
Pearly Gates is a Les Paul Standard Sunburst color.I think it's a 1958 or 59.But when you hear it,you know that it is that tone Billy loves so much.
@cemott3rd I think he uses a Peso only for studio work...in live shows he never had it...
If this doesnt make you wanna do a few a shots of tequilla ...I'll kiss yo ass!
I'd heard that the only person that likes to hear harmonica music is the person playing it. maybe if it's toots thielman butt I could be wrong.
@pmay222 that's right man!
Haha
Jeez, this is confusing! Looks like the 'Tokai' logo is printed on a piece of gaffer tape. Who knows what this is?!
Seemed to be an awful monitor sound on stage 😂
ZZ Top lovers, who is that great drummer and who is the harp player? Dying to know.
the drummer is Frank Beard. The original drummer. Dont know who the harp player is. ZZ Top is usually only a 3 piece band
LesSmith45 James Harman.
holycrossplymouth thanks
mr Franck Beard for sure...
nope, it ain't pearly gates.
