    I have the R7 along with my R5. I also have the RF 100-500 and RF 800. I mainly shoot large mammals; bighorns, pronghorns, deer, etc. I maybe strange but I like the R7 over the R5 for wildlife. I think the R7 autofocus is faster and more sticky. I agree the mechanical shutter is really loud. I had a bighorn ram walking down a trail about 10 yards away and when I hit the shutter it bolted. If you use electronic 1st curtain sync you’ll eliminate most if not all the shutter slap. It’s still noisy though.

    I find the focus on the R7 is better with the RF 100-500 than the F11 telephoto lenses. I do like the R7 for animals over my R6. It did take me a while to set up the focusing where I got better performance.

    I absolutely love the R7 combo with the RF 100 - 500 and for me when you have cameras like the R5 to compare the R7 to then I think you are going to be disappointed. But, when you go out expecting that you are going to only get, let's say, 80% of the images in focus then I am not disappointed when I take images because those images I get in-focus with the R7 combo is damn stupendous! Thank you Brent for such a nice video - take care and be safe out there....

      I had the R6 for about 2 weeks and now the R7. As much i liked the R6s low light performance... the overheating in video, the 30 minute limit, 20 MP only and so many other flaws made it just unreasonable priced, even compared to my EOS RP i was even more happy with than with the R6. Bombers like the R6 are just too useless in my opinion for daily usage/family/pets,.... i though i could get around the 300g extra and bigger size, but I CANT!
      I ended up now instead of a R6 with keeping also my EOS RP and getting a R7 which basically does everything the RP sucks at (and both cameras together are still cheaper than the R6 alone!)
      We have also something to consider - the burst speed! Even if the R7 only nails 70% where as the R5/6 nails 95-99%... the 70%+ in focus and sharp of the R7 are as much or more images than the slower R5/6 can do!
      If the R7 would just suffer less from shutter shock and would have a slightly better readout speed, probably also a (usable!!!!) 240 fps mode. Well then i would consider the EOS R7 as the PERFECT CAMERA (if we dont mind the non existent native lenses)

    Great video Brent. What a beautiful place to film especially with the fall colors! I agree with what you said that if you are looking for a more economic mirrorless camera it seems the R7 would be a great option. So I have used that combo a lot and I give you what I found. Mechanical shutter kind of sucks, it's loud and black out in screen is lot worst than electronic. The best combo I found is use electronic shutter but not on the highest setting, but second highest setting which is about 15 frames per second still. Very quiet and for some reason the rolling shutter isn't nearly as bad when shooting slower frame rates. That is all I use now and works awesome.

    I want to get the RF 600 F11 AND RF 800 F11 lenses. Mostly for moon shots and really long telephoto shots. I currently have the Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Contemporary EF mount and using the EF-RF adapter it works fine, I've considered teleconveters to get extra reach but I think I'll just use GigaPixel AI to enlarge the images as teleconverters just reduce the aperture and thus light so much let alone introduce focusing issues...

    Thanks your great videos. I recently got my R7 for bird photography, but am experiencing some frustration with lenses. The Tamron 150-600 G2 worked well with my 7DII, but with the R7 my keepers are less than 10%, even though the eye tracking in the evf looks good. The majority are soft at best. I tried my old ef 400 f 5.6 + 1.4, but with no is, the results were no better. I can't afford the rf 100-500, but am thinking of getting a used ef 100-400 II to use with my ef 1.4x III. Have you any experience or feedback with this combo and R7?

      A fellow birder I know has the R7 and 100-400 EF which he used on his 90D. He loves it, even with the 1.4 TC. I'd say go for it! If you can get a refurb 100-500 RF, and it is in your price range, I'd go for that as well.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Рік тому +1

      Hey thanks Allen, I'm glad you're liking the videos! I completely gave up on 3rd party AF lenses for Canon mirrorless, they're just going to get worse performance-wise as time goes on, ass Canon really doesn't want to play with others right now. I have used the EF 100-400 mk ii with my R5 and it was absolutely perfect performance-wise. It would be a solid option for you if you can find one for a good price. The RF 100-400 is also surprisinlgy good, and is way cheaper. I did a video on it a while back. It's not quite on the level of the EF 1-4 mk ii, but for the price it's the best budget telephoto lens for the RF mount, IMO. I don't have the EF 1-4 though, so I couldn't say as to its performance on the R7, but I suspect the lens itself will be fine, it's the R7 issues you'll likely encounter more than that lens.

    Wow, if I ever make it to NM I think I now have a bucket list destination for sure! Looks like an amazing place. And I ALWAYS use my thingie as a thingie, just sayin.
    Since I'd been so used to the extra reach of APS-C dSLR bodies for wildlife and macro over the years, I picked up an R7 a few weeks ago myself, and so far I like it very much--though so far I've found the 800mm a bit TOO long to be really useful on it, and have mostly stuck with the 100-500mm. Haven't seen really bad AF issues with that combo, but I have noticed it jumping around a bit more than I'd like. I'll have to play with the AF cases and stickiness settings. I hadn't even tried the mechanical shutter, but I just did and you're right--that is an ugly-sounding shutter!

      lmao, I'm glad somebody gets it! :P Bosque is definitely bucket list-worthy! The R7 really is a very capable camera, especially for anyone who's never used anything better. If I didn't already have an R5, I'd probably be very happy with the R7, especially when paired with the 1-5.

      @AndrewCCM Рік тому

      Take my comment with a grain of salt, but keep in mind your comparing IBIS with 60% variance in perceived focal length. An 800mm on FF vs 800 on Aps-c with regards to stabilization is dramatically different. To accurately compare, you’d need to put a 1280mm lens on the FF.

      @@BrentHall As a follow-up to my post above, I can now report that my wife and I did in fact go to BDA this past weekend and had a great time. We arrived there Friday afternoon (Nov. 4) and returned home the afternoon of the next day (Nov. 5). I think this timing was pretty good as the trees still had their autumn colors (probably a little past peak) and there were already plenty of birds. Prior to this trip I hadn't really done a whole lot of bird-in-flight photography (other than hummingbirds, which is a different experience), but over the course of our 24 hours in the area, I had a heavy dose of BIF shooting. I think my 100-400mm zoom was the bare minimum for a good experience and I still ended up doing a lot of cropping of my images; fortunately, I had 42 megapixels to work with. While my photos aren't as good as yours, I still came away pretty happy with them. I just got mine and have only been able to get out with it once but trying to shoot deer in eye detect mode and probably only about 20% of shots were sharp. I'll have more thoughts and videos on it soon though.

  • @hstein27
    @hstein27 Рік тому +1

    Brent, I've had the R7 for three months now and agree with everything you said. I only got it because I was using my R5 and 100-500 almost always and the R6 and 800 were sitting in my bag, and wanted more reach than the R5, and more MP than the crop mode on the R5. For the first time I really got the 800 on the R7 for a few hours at the rocky shoreline of Rockport, Massachusetts this weekend. I took many pictures of the incoming Harlequin Ducks but most of them were out of focus with the 800. There was a loon that a fellow birder believes is a Pacific, which has been seen at that exact location. But, the BIF focus of the R7+800 was really not good and those loon pics came out pretty out of focus. After lunch I switched to the 100-500 on the R7 and even smaller birds like Surf Scoters out in the distance were more in focus than most of what I got in the morning with the 800.
    The other issue I have with the R7 is corrupted files. I have two V60 Lexar and one V90 Lexar. One of the V60s and the V90 wind up with one or two corrupted files a lot of the time I go out for the day....maybe 1 in 1000 or so. They look fine in camera but with both my card readers and even hooking the camera up via USB they are corrupted, with the colors all messed up and Lightroom rejects them. I've switched to my third V60 Lexar in slot 1 and the other V60 Lexar in slot 2 and have set the camera to record to both simultaneously. We'll see what happens with that. Have you or anyone else had corrupted files with the R7? One of these V60s used to have an occasional corrupted image with my R6 but not as much as with the R7.
    As much as it pains me I may be switching back to the R5 as my main unit. I like the newer auto-focus features (subject tracking) in the R7 but as you said it just isn't as sticky as the R5. Initially I thought it may be better than the R5 for birds jumping around in branches but sometimes it misses birds on the ground 10 feet away if the lighting is not perfect.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  Рік тому

      Oh wow, I'd love to see some Harlequins and Loons!!! I'd be bummed to see them and not come away with decent shots though, lol. I haven't had any card corruption issues with the R7 so far, but I've only used it like 4 times now. I feel you though, if it were just me going out with my own gear to get the best images possible, and not have to worry about making videos for UA-cam, I'd take my R5 pretty much every time. To me, using a crop body (especially when I have such good full frames) just for some extra reach, is a crutch I personally don't need, especially when that crutch comes with all the extra downsides.

    I like the RF 800 F11, but not so much on the R7. Only as you said... superb (mono)cular with photo/video option, even better since its stabilized. But the Sigma 150-600C with half the MFD gave me so much better and awesome shots which would be impossible on the RF 800 F11 with its poor MFD. And well, zooming out made also often a difference, 1280mm minimum is too often too much.

      Btw i dont know how it works on your particular R7, but i personally shoot only EFCS in H+ drive mode above 1/1250 SS, in H (so 7,5 fps) there is no shutter shock in any SS, EFCS or mechanical.
      Shutter shock is really horrible on the R7, i had only beginner APS-C cameras and then the EOS RP, but the R7s shutter shock is horrendous (especially considering its my first "expensive" camera!). Before the R7 i didnt even know it was a thing!
      Below 1/1250 with slower action im often fine with electronic, even for some bigger BIF its enough.

    I tried the R7 and had many of the same problems/concerns. I think it is a great camera for someone getting into wildlife/bird photography, but if you already have an R5 or R6, you ultimately won't be happy with it. I ended up sending mine back and getting the 1.4 teleconverter instead. I know that cuts down on image quality, so I only use it when I do want/need the extra reach. If Canon comes out with a mark ii of the R7 in a few years, then I will consider it, but it will have to address the issues of buffering, focus jump and that machine gun of a shutter.

    Brent l have had R7 since release and it sure has it's faults compared to my R6 but we must accept it still a lot of camera for the price, l would rather have paid another 4 or 5 hundred for a more professional body and shutter but l guess that is not the market Canon were aiming this camera at. n slow burst mode in mechanical or electronic shutter it has shutter lag firing off extra shots after taking finger off shutter does not do it in high burst modes it most annoying but Canon said they would have to tear body apart to check it out so l tolerate it. The R6 mark ii will be a good solid camera with some good upgrades over the original but not enough for me to spend the money on an upgrade as the 20mp in the original don't bother me and l don't do video which is where l feel most upgrades are at. Not sure why but Canon not being overly innovative at moment maybe it all getting saved for R1 and trickle down from there because they certainly have more tech than they are giving us right now.

      I don't know if you've ever watched any of my other wildlife videos and Q&A stuff before, but if so then you'd know I definitely agree with that statement...mostly, lol. I think for people who are in a position of being able to get a great full frame camera, but choose a crop body solely for the "extra reach", then yes, I think that's a crutch. But for those who can only afford a crop body and a low to mid-tier long lens, then you've just got to make the best of what you've got. In general though, I always tell people to learn more about the wildlife, spend more time out, and more time trying to get closer, etc. To me, that kind of stuff will most always beat out the "extra reach" of a crop body, especially with all the drawbacks that come with it. Personally, if it was just me going out there for myself and to make the best images possible, I'd grab my R5 over the R7 every day all day, but alas...UA-cam is my job and I don't always get to photograph what and how I want for the sake of making videos, lol.
