One of my all time favorites. I’m here because I love seeing people hear this for the first time. Closest thing to hearing it again for the first time myself 🔥❤
Powerful lyrics. Especially the last couple of verses: "You game fortune! You gave me fame! You gave me power in your god's name! I'm every person you need to be!
The opening was from Malcom X's speech "Message to the Grass Roots". The title was penned by Nikita Khrushchev in response to Joseph Stalin "On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences". Other historical figures seen and heard in this video include JFK, FDR, MLK, Benito Mussolini, and Mahatma Gandhi. According to Vernon Reid, "a famous German" was originally also in the lyrics but was pulled due to fear that referring to him would be misconstrued and too controversial. I do know of history teachers who have used this song in class. This song was released in 1988 but could have been written today. For another song with tons of messaging try Living Colour - Open Letter To A Landlord.
Couple things before I return to the video: These WERE the first all-black rock-'n'-roll band I ever knew about! And as a white kid that grew up with one side of my family being racists (yeah, me, my bros, and our sisters broke THAT chain!) I was 1) glad to see it, 2).amazed at the guitar work, 3) mesmerized by the lyrics !!! No shame in listening to a great guitar solo again! Or piano, sax, whatever! Listen a few times more to this. Once you can move past the awesome instrumentation in this song....go in and listen to the lyrics, really hard. This song was relevant when it was released. And it's remained relevant so many times, all these decades later..😮😮😮
Living Colour is an incredible band with many songs (and full albums!) that are worth hearing. My favorite album from them is "Time's Up," as it is very hard rock, overall, but it also shows their willingness to experiment with different musical styles-- and they do *all of them* well! I saw LC open for the Rolling Stones in a stadium in '89, and LC rocked hard live!
In answer to your question "what just happened?" You've just had your mind blown, which is what a great rock song does. And this is a perfect rock song. The guitarist is Vernon Reed. He is the Man. I saw them live in Seatlle in the early 90's. My neck still hurts from headbanging so much. LOL. And you're right the riff is righteous.
Fantastic reaction Sebs! The guitar work and messaging made this an instant hit for me and for many others as well. I was fortunate to experience this when it first came out and all the years afterward. Your honest expression of the power of music is an incredible rush to witness. Keep up the good work.
I'm fortunate enough to be old enough to have seen these guys live in the fall of '88 right before they absolutely blew up. I saw them at the Uptown lounge in Athens, GA. Then months later they were opening for the Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheels tour. Absolutely ridiculous levels of energy live. (might have been a year or two later...can't remember exactly...I got the olds)
Why am I here? --- You are two years older than my son. And I spent his whole life introducing him to vintage music and movies and books. He, in return, introduced me to new music, movies, and books and I loved it all. He has now moved on to his adult life. So, channels like yours give me a chance to once again watch young people discover the things that came before them and see their worth. To see how the old feeds into the new and then progresses into something different. These old tunes are things I grew up with, so it's truly fun and fascinating to see someone experience them for the first time, especially when (like you) they have an ability to articulate what catches their ear or why they do or don't like something.
Welcome to the club! Sorry we didn't realize you hadn't heard this. For the guitar solo, there's a video on youtube somewhere of them performing this on Howard Stern show. You should check that out when you have a few minutes.
Corey Glover was my favorite Judas in the Christian rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." I'll never forget when this first came out on the radio. For me, the lyrics are even more meaningful right now.
I can relate (not to the song, but to your not knowing it). I was early 20's when this came out, but I somehow managed to miss that entire generation of music. I knew this one purely through CM Punk, but I'm still constantly hearing 'new' stuff that flew right over my head back in the day. That's a good thing, right? More cool shit for me to discover in between listening to the same 70s & 80s stuff that's still my main go-to.
@@epistte PERHAPS..but they don't. So much prejudice to now appear "white." Better to stick to rap and not offend the cultural programmers who push to keep us all divided.
A Great Band and sooooo under appreciated. I saw them live at a free show at Hammejacks, a legendary rock bar in Baltimore, and I would bet I am not the only one in here that was there. They were awesome live. I would also highly recommend "Open Letter" from that same album
It was an extension/variation/reference to 80s Cali surfer punk type look, being a wet suit. I remember when this came out and 1990 still retained a lot of 80s influences, while evolving into something different.
The guitarist, Vernon Reid, is highly respected and Tom Morello does mention in an interview that since Jimi Hendrix, Vernon Reid was the first time he'd seen a Black guitarist doing really hard music. RATM came out a year after this, so I'm not sure of how much direct influence Living Colour had on RATM, except for sure it would've given them confidence in the direction they took. Eddie Van Halen was a big influence (among others) on both Reid & Morello, for sure. Reid has also said Jimi Hendrix was a huge influence on him & even inspired a riff in this song! Corey Glover, the singer, is phenomenal, too. The entire band is incredibly talented with great musicians.
"you gave me power in your God's name"......straight shot to the evangelists of the world...whose Bible loving fakery and immorality, condemning rhetoric, and money exhorting tactics, have abducted millions over the years....in the name of God and your perception of personal salvation.....but not me, you can be damned sure of that.
Remember attending a Doug wimbish clinic for young jazz musicians. Guy was extremely musically literate was a great educational moment. Then later I look him up and hear him be as heavy as heavy can be 🤘😊
I saw them open for The Rolling Stones in Atlanta in 1989. I bought the album and used it to teach the concept of the cult of personality to my high school history class. They understand it better from the song than the textbook. They were also surprised that I had the album, lol. Cool points for that. Note: The entire album Vivid is fire. Open Letter to a Landlord. Glamour Boys. All the songs.
You will obey me while I lead you And eat the garbage that I feed you Until the day that we don't we don't need you - don't go for help, no one will heed you... Your mind is totally controlled It has been *stuffed* into my mold And you will do as you are told Until the rights to you are sold. That whole album is amazing.
Been following & appreciating yr reactions since your 1rst TOOL experience, my dear...happy to tell you I still feel the same way after catching this one! Can only add that the 2nd comment posted by kimz here, sums up my feelings perfectly. ❤❤❤
This lead singer has an amazing voice. We saw him - and heard him - in the traveling production of Jesus Christ Superstar. He played Judas, a huge part. He was marvelous!!! ❤❤
That Tele looks and sounds sick! These guys are way underrated. Another band worth checking out is Bad Brains. Loud, crazy, and awesome! Also just guessing, but the headstock on Vernon Reid's guitar makes me think Jackson or Charvel.
Hey Sebs, Happy to see you finding amazing music from my youth. Thought I would share my driving tunes from my younger days ( can't afford to lose my license, so now it's house cleaning playlist. Lol. ). Rock Machine by Copyright, Bonecracker by Shocore, Peddle to the Metal by Kazzer, Best Way To Die by Jet Set Satellite, Thunder Kiss 65 by White Zombie, Hey Man Nice Shot by Filter, 45 by Shinedown, Bound for the Floor by Local H, Save Yourself by Stabbing Westward, The Morning After by Faith No More, Whatever by Godsmack, Happy by Mudvayne, Southern Pride by Stuck Mojo, Blood in my Eyes by Dimestore Hoods, Mistake by Serial Joe, Weak by Skunk Anansie, Godless by U.P.O, Come Along by Salty Dog and a few by Candlebox - Simple Lessons, Far Behind, You, Change. Public Service Announcement: This playlist is to dangerous to play when family is present in vehicle. Speed Kills.
It actually came out in '88. It blows my mind as well, that you have never heard this song! This was an ICONIC song of the 80s! I just realized I'm much older than I like to think I really am. It's a great song still! Enjoy! CHECK OUT RODRIGO Y GABRIELA! Aside from their own songs they have done several METALLICA songs. I GUARANTEE, you won't be disappointed!
If I understand the story correctly, they were in the studio(warming up I think) and then Vernon Davis hit up on this riff by complete accident. The rest is history.
Saw Living Colour a few years ago. I had been a fan since a friend gave me a copy of Auslander single in 93 and I went out and got the Stain album right away. I still think Go Away is a monster of a song from that record. When I finally saw them live, I was blown away. Vernon was mind blowing and we even got treated to an extended drum solo which was awesome. Cannot recommend enough seeing them live if you ever get a chance . For my money, Cult of Personality will remain one of the best songs of all time even if no one remembers the band…immortality if a sort, just wish they had remain well known. They split up after releasing Stain and lost all their momentum when they reunited. Still great records, just no one talks about them
You were born in '90? Jeez. I was still married to my first husband then. Yes, we were treated to this on the old Headbanger's Ball and man, what a sensation. (My late (second) husband got to see them on their first tour in some dingy little club in Cleveland and he never let me forget it. I saw Queen five times-one of which he was also at-and I was still jealous.) I never understood why they weren't huge. They've been on our playlist for 35 years. Long live ILC. RIP SBZ
Two more black rock bands that didn’t get enough recognition that I would check out if I was you are, Xavion with the song, Eat Your Heart Out, and Sound Barrier with the song Rock Without The Roll. Both have videos on UA-cam.
Great music is great music. When this come out MTV was still playing videos, however a lot people still didn't have cable. I was one of those people. Heard it on the radio. Just great music. Didn't know what they looked like until I bought the album, still didn't care. Once again great music. Spare time listen to " message to landlord "
If you're looking for moreLC bangers I recommend you Wall, Love rears its ugly head, Ausländer, Open letter to a landlord, Type, Information overload (more relevant than ever), Flying, Behind the sun. Although LC probably inspired RATM, the band that pushed Tom Morello to from his group is Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch band that is one of the pioneers in mixing rock with rap lyrics, their guitar player Tres Manos is outstanding. Check out their album Mental floss for the globe to see what it's about. Thank you Seb for reminding me about Kid Frost and his dope tune. There's another great song about cult of personality but with a way different music style : Let's start WW3 by World Order. And the video is bonkers.
They were one of the founding groups in the Black Rock Coalition. Look it up. Some great artists there! Living Color's lyrics have bite, and they kill it musically. It is sad that these lyrics are so resonant today.
My only guess about Vernon Reid being forgotten about or overlooked as one of the best ever - his technique, phrasing, and touch is so personal, unique and uncopyable.
A Crow Left of the Murder by Incubus came out when I was in 8th grade and I listened to it religiously and I constantly play through those songs. Incubus was my very concert (I lived in the Philippines so it was in Manila), and the opening song was in fact Megalomaniac. Maybe we can do a reaction showing this song to my wife and I can tell her this story.
Kiss from a rose, you say? DId you hear Pentatonix' version? One of the best covers made! I've seen many black reactors being delighted discorvering this band
One of my all time favorites. I’m here because I love seeing people hear this for the first time. Closest thing to hearing it again for the first time myself 🔥❤
Great song! Note the change in the refrain from “only you can set ME free” to “only you can set YOU free”.
Vernon Reid probably most underrated guitarist of that era.
really, Guitar Magazine listed him in the top 10 of the 90's
Played with Sammy Hagar.
Him and Rocky from Suicidal Tendencies.
Corey Glover (singer) was also an actor and was in several movies including Platoon.
Open letter to a landlord is a MUST!!!!
Definitely!
That song is supposed to be about Donald Trump. Glamour Boys is also great.
100%! Open letter to a landlord is killer!
“Middle Man” is the must!
Around the same time a band called Faith no More “had a song called “Epic”. 🔥
I can’t believe this was 34 years ago! 😮
Powerful lyrics. Especially the last couple of verses: "You game fortune! You gave me fame! You gave me power in your god's name! I'm every person you need to be!
Now it’s time for “Love Rears Its Ugly Head”!!! That will mess with your brain!!!!!
Oh a favourite of mine also
And follow up with Type, Times Up, Open Letter, and Pride. Please and Thank you.
He's singing from the perspective of the one lying and being followed. It's fabulous.
Fantastic song, fantastic singer, amazing musicians. Loved this song from the time it was released, and it's even more relevant now!

Open Letter to a Landlord is one of the greatest rock songs ever made.
I love this group!! I remember when this video first came out on MTV. It was great!! 💯💯
"Too Rolling Stoned" - Robin Trower

A totally underrated 90s band.
They're still touring, saw them in Leeds this year.
Great song choice, powerful stuff.
Went to a drum clinic with Will Calhoon and he was drumming for Harry Belafonte when he got the rexord contract for this band.

Sexual Chocolate… lead guitar… Vernon Reid.
It's one of my favorite songs. It was fun to see you so giddy about it!
Your energy is as contagious as this song! One of my favorites as a kid and still is so relevant today!
I love watching you get excited about this song. Just for reference, I graduated highschool in 1990.
I graduated in 1974 when all the music was fantastic. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

There is a reaction compilation out there and the main reaction is "A black rock band!!?". Few cared at the time, it was just good music.
I was a metal head in the 1980s and this album was a big wakeup to me that black guys can rock just as hard.
@@epistte PERHAPS..but they don't. So much prejudice to now appear "white." Better to stick to rap and not offend the cultural programmers who push to keep us all divided.
Yet it was black culture that created rock n roll.
Saw them live this year at Rockfest in Florida, they still sounded the same over 30 years later. The guitarist was still shredding!
They have so many great songs. You should really dive into their catalog of music. They are so underrated.
A Great Band and sooooo under appreciated. I saw them live at a free show at Hammejacks, a legendary rock bar in Baltimore, and I would bet I am not the only one in here that was there. They were awesome live. I would also highly recommend "Open Letter" from that same album
Seeing these guys in concert in their prime was the wildest experience.
Lead singer looks like he came straight from his Peloton class and just threw a leather jacket on over his kit.
Good stuff!
It was an extension/variation/reference to 80s Cali surfer punk type look, being a wet suit. I remember when this came out and 1990 still retained a lot of 80s influences, while evolving into something different.
Saw them live, supporting Extreme, not too long ago... They still ROCK 🤘❤️
The solo goes from chaos into rhythm to chaos to rhythm.
Great analysis. This song is very relevant to this day especially in places where our leaders are caught up in cult of personality still in 2024.
I saw these guys at Summerfest in Downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin along Lake Michigan this past summer. They STILL BRING IT!!!!!!

I think they peaked at a weird year for music. This was right as metal and hair bands became passé as grunge and alternative took over.
Sebs, they were always here. You just were not ready to find them. :)
P.S. Damn, Vernon Reid shreds, eh :)
I was 15 when this came out. It was a huge game changer in what could be done within a song.

I believe these guys were inspired in part by Bad Brains, especially "in my opinion" the guitarist.
A great follow-up is I'm the Slime by Frank Zappa. It's completely different music wise be the theme is spot on.

In 1989 I was at the old Tampa Stadium to see In Living Colour open for The Rolling Stones. It. Was. Epic.
They played an AIDS fund raiser for us back in the day. Nice bunch. Late wife knew Doug Wimbish.
