The engine is securely nailed on the wooden chassis
For 1908, that's pretty hi-tech.... all things in context
Current Batches Surely its held down by catgut webbing?
@Current Batches the baker that makes the cookies man I love those fig cookies
Some wood species r almost as strong as steel one species is named iron wood
They use zip ties. C'mon people. THINK!
one of the nicest car designs ever seen, excelent!
Beautiful sound
This looks like one incredible machine,
Masterpiece..
Another car I'd love to see at Kop Hill.
this just screams steampunk and i love it
That's what i call an experimental weapon...
daaam.. the japanese sure made nice cars 100 years ago!
How dose it stop, good ?
with only crappy rear brakes, no it dont stop well.
One headlight, you can see the road below you, a lot of exposed moving parts, and loud as hell: It's just like my 1990 ford taurus.
Very good, A Lincoln!
🤣😆😂🤣😆😂
LOL! Very good.
Well played
my 2003 ford taurus was getting there. it had a good size hole in the back right passenger floor board. if the carpet wasn't there you'd see the road. the engine was pretty reliable.
i traded it in for a 2016 ford fusion thats now on its 3rd engine... I regret not saving more money to buy something better. i got 4 more years left with this POS.
I love the looks with the single headlight, brilliant stuff!
Cool huh?!
Angry cyclops
Agreed. It reminds me of some kind of steam punk robot that wants to kill me. I love it.
It's super cool 😍😍
Sure one would not mistake one for a motorcycle at night.
The best looking car I have ever seen in my whole life.
poor chap
Vasco.
Indeed
Such a one eyed monster - gotta agree, she's gorgeous
This steampunk look is amazing. And the guy fits perfectly.
He almost got creamed by that Vauxhall Vivaro!
Ah, he still flow around him.
They sped up a few sequences in the video, that was one of them, it wasn't as close as it looked.
Love the fact that he drives it and enjoys doing it, instead of putting that thing in a garage to rot away with time.
I know a guy who drives his ratty ascona everywhere but has 3 mint condition ones just sitting in his barn. They don't even really see sunlight.
is this what real steampunk looks like?
Yes, actually.
But it's a petrol car...
Yes it's gasoline but Jay Leno's real steam engine cars powered by steam just look like boring normal 1910s cars
@@tacokoneko Do you know why? Because steampunk is not real
It rides the line between steampunk and dieselpunk. Then again, so does the era it was built in!
Who ever filmed this, need to get off the drugs.
Drugs are bad......MKay
lol. The out of focus into focus shots were to slow and hard my eyes
Cocaine is one hell of a drug
maybe u need to use some drugs to focus!!!!!!!
@Timothy Somerville I think the situation is: if you see the car properly, then they think they have lost. Very irritating video. Maybe they think that as a result I will make sure to go to Goodwood - bit of a judgement error there.
Every since I saw Chitty chitty bang bang when I was about four or five i've been fascinated by these predepression race cars. It is truely an era we will never see again, with air plane engines, single seat exposed cabins, and wheels thinner than bricks. Thank you to all those who are keeping these cars alive physically and in spirit.
watch the goodwood races
That's a duel seat car tho...
TIP TOP.
There is an aerospace version of the Subaru flat 4 engine, a version of the Subaru flat 4 is also used it many rally cars, so stickily speaking there are racing cars with aeroplane engines still today, lol.
That's the exact same story as mine haha.
1:09 that start up.
ERECT!!
Nasty!
What a sound!!
I want this car! It looks so simple and primitive like it is.
You're right. And I thought my 2000 Nissan Altima 5spd was beautiful and primitive heehee.
We're missing simple cars these days 😢
Wooden chassis? Feck, a wooden chassis?!!!! That is terrific, sort of makes you want to find and engine nail something like that together. And they use it to go on holidays? Way to go!
There are still cars made with wooden chassis. MORGAN !!!
I was about to mention Morgan, but the guy before me already did.
Pretty much every wheeled road vehicle was built of wood (usually Ash) before IC engines began to appear, so if it worked why not stick with it?
At that time wood was the lightest and strongest material readily available.
@@willemstreutgers1154 No, they dont have a wooden chassis. they have a meatal chassis, but the steel bodywork does have a wooden frame under the skin of it, much like most early cars used to.
when i first saw this GN fly up Shelsley my first reaction was... 'Blimey where did they dig that thing up from, it looks like its just come off the Somme battlefield!!' :)
Class! What a brilliant car and enthusiastic chap.
We've met some incredible Edwardian cars on the road, let us know in the comments any great classic cars you think we need to see
+Goodwood Road & Racing
My friend Edward had a real nice 1971 Ford Pinto, but I don't think there are any left on the road.
Goodwood Road & Racing We need longer videos, how are we supposed to learn more about these wonderful machines? I'd love to see more GN's, a video on the GNat would be something really special :)
Awsome cars! Thanks
Goodwood Road & Racing This might be a daft question, but do you need insurance to drive it? If you do, then how much would it be? Does it need an MOT? And lastly, if you were to build one out of vintage parts, would it be Road legal nowadays, or would it have to be classified as a kit-car? This looks like a good parts hunting excuse to build your own!
I'm no expert on vintage cars, but I believe cars *first registered* before a certain date are exempt from many regulations. I *think* that includes MOT, but you *would* still need some form of insurance. A kit car built "new" from vintage parts would not qualify, because it wouldn't have that "first registered" grandfather exemption.
There are specialist insurance firms for vintage cars, and they would undoubtedly stipulate that the car has to be roadworthy for their insurance to be valid.
An overhead valve V8 in 1908, meanwhile ford are still using a side valve v8 in 1953.
And to this day, the most advanced and powerful american V8 has a pushrod activated 2 OHV per cylinder configuration, and a single cam at the bottom of the V...
My 15 year old lawnmower's got an OHC... the colonials will never cease to amaze me XD
Jean-Charles Weyland the LS is a great engine. More cams doesn’t equal better lol.
I never said that. I compared overhead cam and overhead valves. A OHV and a OHC engine have the same number of cams, it's the head configuration that really changes. Hemispherical combustion chamber with two valves inclined by 35° is not the most efficient design you can come up with.
A stock LS1 makes 345hp for a displacement of 5,7liter which makes 60,5hp per liter. A 1973 Opel Commodore GSE makes 170hp from a 2.8liter OHC straight 6 => 60,7hp per liter.
It's not a bad engine, but it's no high output engine by any means...
If you take a Hellcat 707hp for 6,2liter blown v8 or 114hp/l and a Fiat 500 Twinair (2 cylinders) 105hp for 875cc (0,875liter) => 120hp/liter...
Doesen't equal better but higher power output and no reliability issues !
Ford made one for the Sherman tank.
Ford made a DOHC engine in 1939 for tanks. It was a 1100 cu. in. V8 and was called the GAA engine.
It looks like a locomotive from a dystopian future, but as a car
What I believe the kids call *ahem* "steam punk"
@@SebAnders Or even dieselpunk given the grime and gasoline involved. :)
What an aggressive looking car, love it! You'd never be able to tell this was from 1914.
Beautiful to look at and hear. Previous comment just doesn't get it. Your on lease Fiesta is boring and will not last 109 years. Old cars are the best, maintain them with a handful of tools and the end is, you have SO much fun and enjoyment.
Plus hundreds of dollars lost in fuel and no safety whatsoever.
@@yosyp5905 yes it's very important to have a completely safe hobby which is free of cost to get proper enjoyment.
@@warrenblain2365 He's talking about being "better" and life lasting.
I get this could he a hobby but comparing these blocks of metals to the most recent, efficient, and more reliable engines is just ignorance.
Old is not always gold.
@@yosyp5905 in the last hundred years, engines have become more efficient and reliable. Shock, horror, probe!
Why cant we just enjoy diversity? I want to drive this as much as i want to get in an ordinary modern 'boring' car after work when its raining and get home. The world is not a zero sum game
I love how the Europeans take these cars out and drive them like crazy instead of letting them sit up in shows are museums like a lot of westerners do
@David Sanchez in a straight line 😁
I have a 1967 Impala and use it everywhere and people say I'm dumb. But all cars are meant to be driven not stored away.
gamwpanagia
LOL! Hahaha!
I just felt the heat from that burn!!!
Nice :)
He literally said this is the only one that isn't in a museum...
That made no fucking sense 😑😑
The aerial atom of its day
I can't get over what a nice tone the engine has, and that open floor means fewer pit stops. ;-p
The single headlight, those bodylines and the rivets make it look out of this world. Almost like steampunk mixed with rat-rod and some craziness!
Beyond cool .......need more info.......estimated HP.......how many gears ....top speed ? Please ramble on.
Please learn.... How to.... Form.... A complete.... Sentence.... Dumbass
something similar to this, 200bhp, peak power probably 1500-1800rpm, maybe 300-350nm, 0-62 in about 6.5s, maybe max out about 120mph if brave enough and weighs about 470kg.
Shouldn’t you use a helmet with that car?
The red paint would make it go fastah! WAAAAGH!!!
*If Cyclops from Marvel Comics had a car, this would be it*
"The car is 1914",
Title: 108 year old GN...
Title guy... you had 1 job
As an old girlfriend once told me... "It's not a lie! I just told you the truth prematurely!"
It's cause the engine is 1908, the 1914 chassis of the car didn't originally have this prototype engine. If you think of the heart of the car being the engine then the title is accurate.
@@G1NZOU Being 1914, I wouldn't be surprised if the car was shoved into a garage for the nest 4 years, uncompleted!
@@1946nimrod Fair point.
Fantastic. Did I see the ABS light on!
Mike Frost they didn’t have ABS in those days.
It has push-n-pray brakes.
Push the pedal and pray what's in front of you gets out of the way in time.
There's a reason they never talk about the brakes. To say they're a bit of an afterthought on cars like this would be an understatement.
This man drive a piece of history. Nice hobby
"We take thic car to the south of france on our holidays with a toothbrush and a spare pair of jeans"
...a spare pair of underwear is what I would bring. Lovely car an owner nonetheless
Work of art
Any chance of getting a high resolution version of the image that shows up before you launch the video?
the coolest Cyclops I have seen! would gleefully give my right arm to drive it once but then the arm would be needed. exchange for six teeth. lovely car.
Not enough walking around and looking at your beautiful machine....more please. Thanks for the taster
During those times car racing was clearly for those who had a deathwish. Nowadays it is just overpaid boys driving around circles with rules to remove every technical innovation someone might figure out.
これはカッコいい!
最高です!👍
光岡自動車に現代版のを作ってもらえないかな?
Eh?! But, for £229 per month, he could lease a brand new Fiesta.....
+Jiggy Jiggy That's not nearly as cool though...
+Kevin Montgomery
No Shit, Sherlock!
sayan das
I was joking about leasing a Fiesta, obviously. WAKEY WAKEY!!! And if you'd like to say that to my face, I'll be in Tuscany, in May, watching the Mille Miglia.
holy shit you got a hard time for that one.. i liked that joke

Thank goodness for a comment from someone who possesses at least some basic humility, respectful decency, and a sense of humour. Have a pleasant evening.
*_"Циклоп", ночью может не разъехаться со встречкой, подумают, что мотоцикл._* 🙄🙄🙄😎😎😎😎😎😎
I would have to think long and hard to come up with a car I would rather own than this absolute jewel.
I love it.... it looks like a living, breathing machine with a soul. It looks like it has stories to tell! This is what cars are about, not paper stats, fashion wheels, stupid LEDs and screens buried in the dashboard. It's about feeling, hearing and communicating with the machine, bare essentials, pure motoring.
1914-2016 is in my opinion 102 years old, am I wrong?
This is love at first sight!
Wow ! *** great car & owner. Simple is more fun.Looks like a time traveller. Please next time mount camera in different locations on your vehicle.
Drive safe .
"This is my job and my hobby" - How the hell are you earning money doing that?
I love the era of racecars that were literally just rolling engines with a small place to sit.
..and a passenger!
The camerawork and editing of this video is so annoying
It makes my 1968 BMC Moke look like a limousine!! I love it!!
Why add the crap music?lets hear the engine.
white van bout took it out first thing lol glad it didn't fart van would have crushed u
I'm not a car-guy. Not at all.
But this... this is beautyful!
Spare pair of jeans? No extra panties or socks?
Pure awesomeness. Richard is a genius extraordinaire. Were those LEDs inside the two smaller lamps?
Probably the only car from 1914 that looks fast sitting still.
Beautiful? Did I note an LED lamp at 2:09? Good choice!
2:06
Airplane engine, that's what I'm talking about
That is absolutely BADASS!! 😎🍻
It performs, it's fun to drive, it's got soul, it's simple.
In other words it's everything a modern car isn't.
What do you think people like more - the new electric crap or that one? I propably couldnt even get that registered in Finland. And its a true crime.😂👍
*real crime. true crime is a genre of entertainment
Hundred year old rat rod
I want one!! 🤩👍👍👍
Absolutely kamazing car, too bad it was hard to actually get a look at it between the shaky camera and constant scene changes
I wish this video was about ten minutes longer. That's a beautiful machine.
By far coolest looking car I’ve ever seen
Imagine having a car than can be undone by termites
Not a problem in England!
This looks like a Sci-Fi Prop from a Steampunk Blockbuster movie!!! BEAUTIFUL!🖤🖤🖤
Stunningly splendid. Well over a century old V8 nailed into a beautiful car. Delightful.
Video simply isnt long enough 👍
you got that right .... x100 !
I love it more because he loves it so much
... dude, you just hit the nail right on the head - pure joy!
Is the single, centrally mounted headlight a characteristic of GNs ? If so, I saw a couple of these coming towards me down a country lane near Market Harborough last week. Many thanks to their drivers for introducing me to a whole world I knew nothing about. Such amazing - looking vehicles !
Looks like a minion with V8 😀
Wow... Engine is powerfull i like it
Wow simply delightful! You've got yourself a new subscriber! :D
i would sell my house for this car
same here, i'd sell everything apart from my dogs for this beast.
Super cool video!! I have been assembling a machine shop to support my UA-cam channel that I will be starting with the build of a 1928 Morgan RIP GN special 3 wheeler with 4 wheels. I am using an experimental aircraft opposed twin supercharged engine. This will be mated to an MG 4 speed manual gearbox with a 2 piece hand cast aluminum adapter. This will be connected to an MG differential with beautiful wire wheels. The frame I stood over steel and will have aircraft cloth stretched over and sprayed with plasticizer. This will have a boat tail look and is essentially a 20's airplane without a propeller or wings. There is only one other in existence and Charlie Martin races it in the UK. The next project lined up is the building of a Brooklands style cycle car similar to the Pembleton. This will have a BMW R-100 engine in the front and four wheels with gorgeous leather interior and even space for luggage. I look forward to seeing everyone over at the channel when it gets warm out enough to be in the barn in Pennsylvania .....
My god she is so beautiful a real dream car in every way. Keep your dream cars Bugatti Veron Ferrari etc this is mine!!!!!!!!!

I wonder why some of these very old cars had positive camber.

Love the single spot light!
I wish today's cars were like that in terms of appearance, with modern safety features. That'd be a blast.
What's to stop a modern manufacturer from doing a minimalist car like this? Am I the only person that wants one? Rain? BAH! My skin is water proof. Cold? Meh, I've got a good coat. I WANT ONE!
The design is like out of steampunk action movie
that car is awesome but have any SJW's complained about the name yet? i know it was named after the guy who founded the company " John Alfred Prestwich" "JAP" but that doesn't matter to the "perpetually outraged" community so when is UA-cam going to pull this video because of complaints?
Compared to most other aircraft engine'd monsters of the era, this is a compact good looking old hot rod. I love the engine growl & the Cyclops headlight, I bet the engine keeps him warm in the cool English climate.
Take most people, they have a thing for cars. They sweat cold from a scratch on the bodywork, and they never stop telling you how many kilometers they travel with a liter, and if they take a new model they are already thinking of changing it with an even newer one. I don't even like old cars, you know. I mean, I don't even care. I'd rather have a goddamn horse. At least one horse is human.
(J. D. Salinger, The Young Holden)
All those blokes who muck about with Cars may as well just give up & coincide this is the greatest Car ever .. Amazing , surprised Jay Leno hasn’t come knocking.
Who from the 1910s - through WW1 would've known what might burning oil and horseless carriage motors for 100 years into the future would bring humanity ultimately.
2:05, is that a led-bulb?
I want this car!
Basically it's a fruit crate with a lawnmower engine, four bicycle wheels and an electric lamp. And I thought I saw the most mammamia of all cars, the Morgan Three Wheeler...
