  • Almost everything we consume will one day go to waste. Measures such as waste recycling, reuse and reparation are crucial to decrease the amount of waste. Thanks to such initiatives, only about 1 % of the waste in Sweden goes to landfill.
Audio description: This video starts with footage of garbage. The interviewee is Martin Dyberg of NSR. The video then shows a woman recycling plastic bottles. The video then moves to Siptex in southern Sweden, where textiles are sorted. It then moves to Linköping, where Johan Böök, head of international relations at Tekniska Verken AB is interviewed.

It's good to know that the Swedish care this much about the issue, up until this point the only people I knew in waste management were Italians.

Very interesting. But, unfortunately, you´re not taking the most important thing into account (the *root* of the problem): the waste is the result of a disproportionate consumption, on one part due to the exacerbated consumism of we, the consumers (due to a large void in our lives, lack of sense should I say, that we try to fill with unecessary objects) and, on the other hand, due to the exacerbated greed of large companies. These last ones instead of manufacturing products to endure, they make them with a very close obsolescence date to force consumers to buy again as soon as possible, wasting energy, raw materials, labour force and so on in the process.
For example: 80 years ago, my grandmother bought a brand new fridge which she used for her entire life. It´s the same one I used for almost 15 years until I decided to buy a more modern one. It lasted five years and, ever since, I changed 5 fridges, each one of them impossible to recycle in their entirety and even those parts useful for recycleing were highly toxic and pollutants...
This is the *real* circle of waste that we all should face and solve for good. Otherwise, we're just putting a band-aid on a cancer...

You touch on several very valid points! We do need to be more mindful of many things indeed.

Problem with making things last longer is the company cant make money and cant survive, so they have to make some parts break faster so they can be repaired or the machine breaks so you have to replace the entire thing.
Just look at lightbulbs, those things where so good back in the days the biggest companies decided together that lightbulbs should not survive longer then X, and then set that as the industry standard and bought out other smaller companies that tried to compete. Just so the companies could survive, if the lightbulbs never broke, they would not be able to make any money after X years since the lightbulbs never breaks.
Money makes the world go round.

@@Ormathon You´re right! But those multinational companies don´t have any risk of bankruptcy... they're just obscenely greedy ; )
