Wonderful tribute, Dereck. I hate to use the word, "under-appreciated", but I can find no other word to describe her career. She was such an important composer, bandleader, and instigator of creative music. Memorable melodies and fabulous arrangements. She will be missed.
She took the great Escalator Over The Hill. RIP . In the 70 I used to listen to this album almost on a daily base. It was so divers and so long and always enlightening , I only needed one record per day.
Good to catch up with you Dereck. Beautiful tribute to one of the most original artists of our time. Not long ago I watched a lovely interview with her and Steve Swallow. She was so refreshingly humble too. Tropic Appetites, Heavy Heart, and Nite-Glo are particular favorites here. Long live her music and inspiration. Thanks as always. -Carm
I am the proud owner of a copy of the 1986 New Music Distribution Service catalog, with its neon orange and green cover by Keith Haring. Carla's contributions as a composer are certainly her most important, but she also helped this kid trapped in the mid-1980s suburbs expand his ears tremendously, in those pre-internet days, via the miracle of mail-order LPs.
Thank you for this. She lived in the next town over from me. I had hoped to meet her someday, but she was very private. It doesn't get much better than "Lawns."
Appreciate your tribute. “Lawns” is one of my favourite compositions. Steve Swallow remains a personal hero. The two of them were pure magic. Steve's tone and technique are so original. I would play along to his tracks just with a pick, just because it felt right. Like my own tribute to him. Anyways, I truly loved all of Carla's compositions. Not a bad one among them.
I saw her on a TV show hosted by Davis Sanborn called "Night Music". They would have multiple performers on the show, and they would throw diverse performers together for jams. She was on there with Steve Swallow. Bootsy Collins was in the same episode. They did a song called "Healing Power" that utilized his voice and attitude as an instrument. Hiram Bullock played an amazing guitar solo on that .
Hey Dereck, I have TROPIC APPETITES. I Fell in love with her looks after seeing a picture of her long ago. before I had heard any of her music. Thanks for the tribute and summary of her works. Take care Dereck
She was one of my favorites. When I found the CD version of Escalator it didn't have the booklet with it. I got in touch with her daughter, Karen Mantler and she sent me the last LP booklet they had. I'm shocked that this is the first I've heard of her passing. She won't be forgotten.
Love that Hapless Child, I've had two copies of that, the first was 'lost' by my brother. I also have Silence, which I wanted to love because of the vocalists, an amazing combination, but musically it's not so engaging. There was also that Nick Mason 'solo' album which was actually a Carla Bley solo album.
my introduction was through that Paul Bley album and specifically the Ida Lupino piece too. was just thinking about digging deeper into the early work, Escalator and Tropic Appetites. I saw that video with Jack Bruce as well… I was reminded of the other as I heard "what will be left between us and the moon tonight?" recently. Need to check the Michael Mantler stuff too! heard her last album and some live session around it on the swedish radio when it was released some years ago, the first piece, the title track, is divided in the sections: "Life Goes On"; "On"; "And On"; "And Then One Day" ~
Great albums, some of them I didn't know about, so I need to check out the Michael Mantler albums. Also of note are her contributions to the early Golden Palominos albums.
Social Studies is one of my favorites. European Tour is great with the Canterbury scene players. Nick Mason's "Fictitious Sports" is a great Carla Bley album in disguise. Also "Tropic Appetites" with Julie Tippetts.
I can't help it but I keep thinking about that song her daughter Karen wrote called "People Die" ( with lyrics such as, "it's a fact, once ur born there's no turning back" 🎶 )
I can still remember as a young man me trying to learn her tune "Chicken". I've been playing her music all day. I assume ur not allowed to actually play any music due to copy right issues. But how does one do a proper tribute to an artist of this scale without at least playing a few cuts ?

Thanks for the education. I am in the dark. Condolences.

Hello Carm.
Sextet is one of my favorite albums. Thanks Carla RIP

Damn. Now I'll have to figure out a way to live in a world without Carla Bley in it.
Rest In Peace, and thanks.
Thanks for turning me on to Ms.Bley back in the day. ❤

Carla Bley was a true visionary. The world is poorer without her in it.
RIP, what a perfectly elegant tribute. I only am familiar with her work with Jack Bruce. Will need to check more of her body of work out. Thank you.

Great show and episode. They played a bit of "Lawns" as well. Her daughter Karen played organ.
I've really missed that show over the years. Until the advent of UA-cam, I had to rely on my worn out vhs tapes.@@blackcatcentralmusic

Love Carla Bley! Her LP "Tropic appetites" is wonderful as well.
thank you ❤

The first version of Escalator CD on JCOA had the booklet
@@AllanMarion-gd1sl I think it came with a booklet outside the jewel case all housed in an outer slip case
thanks for the nice review
Shared this video with my Public on Facebook.
I recommend the Blake Sleeves without the flap. All the clarity without the annoyance of the flap folding over time. RIP Carla 😢

I have a number of her and Mantler's ECM albums. Great stuff.

Love Carla Bley, by the way can you tell me who made your album shelves or did you have them custom made?
Custom.
I have 'The Hapless Child' LP too. Good record!
Social Studies is one of my favorites. European Tour is great with the Canterbury scene players. Nick Mason's "Fictitious Sports" is a great Carla Bley album in disguise. Also "Tropic Appetites" with Julie Tippetts.
I will explore thanks.
I have Dinner Music and Musique Mechanique in my library. Maybe more...
RIP Carla Bley.
Nice one Dereck!

Carla Bley RIP
I only have Carla Bley playing '8½' by Nino Rota. I'll give it a spin. RIP
❤
. . . . And what about her contribution to the "That's the Way I Feel Now, a tribute to T. Monk" great double album.
I can still remember as a young man me trying to learn her tune "Chicken". I've been playing her music all day. I assume ur not allowed to actually play any music due to copy right issues. But how does one do a proper tribute to an artist of this scale without at least playing a few cuts ?
I just did.
Actually it was a rhetorical question. But well done. I agree with ur closing sentiments about Carla. B. for sure.
The hair and always had on black attire. The New Liberation Music Orchestra another great band. Do u also have any of her daughter's Karen's music?
Yes.
