    Fun fact, the tuning system proposed by Vicentino wasn't 31 tone equal temperament, but an extension of a temperament called 1/4 comma meantone (which is very similar but not the same as 31 tone ET)

      ^yes this was what I was talking about re: the 3% discrepancy but I didn’t want to go into that with this video. I think 31-TET gives a better way to get into analyzing the music itself even if it’s not technically 100% accurate. Vicentino also had the 36-note scale too 🤣 just bonkers what folks were like him were up to!

      @@saadhaddadmusic Yeah I should have clicked on the link 😅😆, just assumed it was going to be about 12 vs 31 tet.
      Oh, didn't know about the 36 note scale, seems interesting 🤯. I will always love the experimentalist ideas some folks had throughout history 🤣

    it sounds like it is coming from tuning chords “more properly”. similar to how there are enharmonic differences on some organs from this time ( eb and d# )

    • @saadhaddadmusic
      @saadhaddadmusic  7 місяців тому +1

      That’s exactly it! There was a type of organ that vicentino made for this purpose

    I honestly didn’t even know composers were playing around with microtonality this early in western music.

      @saadhaddadmusic it’s hard to claim Eurocentrism nowadays (ofc not specifically for this piece) with how strongly such traditions took root in America and in an expanded global “Western” context. At what point does a music become its own thing, instead of the lineages it pays homage to?
      Jazz could be considered “Eurocentric,” but I don’t think many practitioners of the genre would argue such a case, despite Jazz having derived much of its theory from European traditional practices! 😂

    This is a great introduction to microtonal music, and I'm going to use it as bait to get people hooked! 😄👍
    It's such a pity that 31edo fell into oblivion all these centuries. What J. S. Bach would, and could have done with it? It's so hard to imagine. Could you please explain what is meant by "losing the way", and by "putting a singer back on the right track", at 9:17?

    • @saadhaddadmusic
      @saadhaddadmusic  7 місяців тому +4

      Use it!
      I think he means just losing their sense of orientation in terms of how wide the intervals are. Mr. Galilei = not a fan!

    Well, I guess J.S. Bach did take a very clear stance on this matter when he decided to compose The Well Tempered Clavier. Nice video. Thanks!

    Hello Saad, I'm a new subscriber and I just wanted to say I love how simple and informative your videos are. I was wondering if you could do a video on how you format your scores to look more "professional"? (What software do you use/recommend, what do you include, etc.) Thank you again for your music and videos! :)

    Love these mini, but still deep dives into this expanded Sonic world...did I understand you right, that in his 31 note octave system, the note that we 'know' as, say, C#/Db in our tempered system, isn't even included in Nicola's octave??? So I assume it can be even further divided down right?-however impractical it may be to do so in actual performance practice-that quote at the end, by Galileo, makes me think how it is really nothing short of a miracle that any of his music and theoretical writings have survived these hundreds of years at all!...I'm glad it did though, like Verdi once said, "Let us turn to the past; that will be progress!"
