How To Groom a Long Haired Cat from Bathing to Drying and the Final Comb Out

  • Cat do require regular grooming just like dogs.
    Cats do not groom themselves. They lick themselves. Grooming and licking are two entirely different things. One is the act of using products and tools to clean, neaten, clip, trim and set right. The other involves using the tongue to spread saliva around. Whether or not your cat is a short hair, medium hair or has lengthy locks doesn’t matter at all. Licking is licking.
    When a cat "grooms" she covers herself in saliva, ingests large amounts of shedding hair and then regurgitates it up on the kitchen floor in the form of a hairball. And on top of the cat spit all over your feline’s body, there are lots of germs and bacteria added from visits to the litter box or running about behind the toilet. Matted cats are uncomfortable and mats can cause skin problems and pain. Regular grooming can prevent mats.

    Wow you have firm grip! I've never taken my cats from the neck thing but maybe I shouldnt be scared to do so. That cat was like 'oh okay' 😀

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  5 років тому +3

      It does not hurt, if I let go the cat would get away for sure, I dont always hold the scruff but do when I need to keep them from getting away.

  • @RealCheeseOnly
    @RealCheeseOnly 3 роки тому +7

    Holding the scruff is fine, but lifting them up by that skin is HARMFUL. They are more delicate than dogs and they are too heavy to lift like that. The skin may tear and hurt the neck as well. Mother cats can do that while the kittens are still very small, but adult cats especially are too heavy to use lift them by their scruff. Grip there, but lift underneath the chest for support.

    0:29 THANK YOU FOR POINTING THAT OUT! I have been telling people that for a long time that cats do not groom themselves, they just lick themselves.

    Is there a reason why you clipped the claws after bathing? Just curious if there’s a benefit. Is it better after a bath? I groom my long haired Persian Ragdoll mix at home in the kitchen sink. She’s pure white and likes rolling on the ground so I frequently groom her. She loves the water.

    Oooookay, so I think I'm a pretty decent dog groomer, but I have never done cats (not on my own at least, apart from trimming claws.) but for my job, I really need to and also want to learn cat grooming, because they won't let me without experience. Do you have any tips or recommendations? For instance...is it possible to bathe them by filling a tub with warm water and just submerging their bodies instead of using flowing water, in order to make them feel less scared? This cat was so sweet, but there might be some terrified/hysterical ones that I'm worried about not having enough hands to hold them and wash them at the same time. What about muzzles, do you recomend them? Blowdrying?

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  5 років тому

      Hi, this is the muzzle that I use
      amzn.to/2BPrGUu. Some cats freak out more if you submerge them in water. You need the shower hose to get the skin and too rinse.

    My long haired tuxedo Ragdoll cat needs a bath I’ve never gave him a bath before and I’d rather a professional do it. Do you live in Texas maybe I’ll call and ask if you can do it. He’s 7 months old

    I just bought the stuff to groom and cut my TT. He's not too keen on the hv blower, do you have any pointers to help get him over his nerves please. He goes to the groomers for the last time on Tuesday then we are going it alone can't say I'm confident at the moment lol.

      I start the dryer on low and start at the backend and work my way forward. Some dogs cannot tolerate the high velocity dryer so I use the stand dryer. If they can't tolerate the stand dryer then I cage dry. You can work with your dog by drying the backend and praise him. Do small sections at s time.
      Also you can try and use the hoodies to cover his ears

    How do i towel dry my cat i dont have pet dryer it’s expensive.

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  4 роки тому

      Wrap your cat in a towel and once it's wet use another dry towel. Use a few towels until most of the water is absorbed. Comb your cat while damp and when dry. You could place a towel on the bottom of a carrier and put your cat in the carrier. The towel will absorb the water while he is sitting in there. You can use a human dryer.

    Very interesting video. I'm so impressed by that calm cat. Every minute of the video I thought: if you do this to my cat, he will kill you! Don't get me wrong, he is a cuddly and nice cat, but he hates water, he hates to be hold down in the neck, hates loud noises like a dryer or vacuum. So, of cause, it's a good technique you have, but I think you couldn't do that to every cat without getting severe scratches and wounds.

    I don't like the way you grab and yank the cat like that. It is a well behaved nice kitty so not necessary at all to do that.

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  5 років тому

      It's hard to tell in the video but he is using all his strength to get away and I have to move him around, if I let go he will fly out of the tub so it's necessary to hold him like I did. I am not yanking he is pulling.

      She did a fantastic job. And was extremely gentle, you must have never groomed a cat before, I have, and wow, there were times I was like amazed that she did this without a helper to restrain the cat for her.

    • @mywickedqueen3547

      You did a great job. I was alarmed by the use of scruffing for lifting him. I was always told to never lift a full grown cat like that. I can understand for keeping him still, however. Nonetheless, I thought it was a thorough job.
