Fun fact: The producers of Dark are working on their next Netflix series right now called "1899". It's gonna be ghost ship-esque horror/thriller on the Atlantic ocean, there's only a teaser out so far, though..
We have yet to see what the ship will actually look like, I hope it's not gonna be what we saw in the teaser, since that'd be very historically inaccurate. That one looked like an Edwardian era liner, which would be an entire decade too early
The mini-series “Unorthodox” is well worth seeing. It is about a young woman from New York who starts a new life in Berlin. The languages are Yiddish, English and German.
I think your description leaves out a few things. The heroine is from an ultra Orthodox Jewish family in an arranged marriage in which is stifling. She runs away/escapes to Germany where her mother is living after she left the Ultra Orthodox community in NYC. Her husband comes looking for her. It was base on a book/true story from some years before.
Surprised you didn't include Babylon Berlin. That's an amazing show set in the late Weimar period, huge budget and major production. It's a neo noir crime thriller set in the late 1920's and follows closely many historical events. Anyway, Babylon Berlin and Dark are my two favorite German shows, and Dark definitely in the top 3 of my favorite series of all time.
Yes, DARK! The best German series ever in my opinion. I really don't know why it isn't much more popular in Germany. Maybe because it's on Netflix and not on classic tv? Or maybe it's a case of the prophet not being honoured in his own country...
Probably the latter. It still was quite popular, though, so it's not completely unheard of. Some things just don't kick off in their country, just like "Die drei ???" (The Three Investigators) completely flopped in the US but is still extremely popular in Germany, to a point where it got picked up and continued by German authors.
So surprised you left out Babylon Berlin! I am a huge fan of that show. Very good for people who enjoy noir-style shows. Not sure if the actors or famous/well-known in Germany, but I enjoyed it. Hoping they’ll come out with a fourth season soon!
I watched Dark, and absolutely loved it. The actors were phenomenal, and loved the casting, the younger version of the characters looked so much like them. I just finished the Korean drama "Hotel Del Luna" and i highly recommend it if you like supernatural mysteries.
"Dark" is a definite recommend. Its dubbed English audio isn't that great, so consider watching it in the original German with the well-made English (non-CC) subtitles for better immersion.
Dark is very good but not for those that cannot keep up. I had a huge poster with all the people. …..looked like I was trying to solve a crime!!!! Original idea and well edited. Take a shot every time they say Noah!!!!
I almost cried when you chose German potato salad. My German grandmother made the BEST! Been more than 50 years since I had any. I have watched Barbaren! I took 4 years of Latin in high school!
I think this is one of your best videos yet for many reasons - we get to hear you speak German and with subtitles it becomes educational for us. Also you are helping those of us who live in Germany integrate further by learning about more German content we can consume. I really think you should make more videos like this, teaching and speaking German in Germany and talking about German culture, events, arts and society. Thanks
I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments because the show is just too good to be overlooked but "KLEO" (starring Jella Haase and Dimitrij Schaad) is a fantastic series. Probably due to my age, I am fascinated with life in the former East German state and in particular, under the watchful eyes of the Stasi. This show has everything: Action, adventure, romance (of sorts) and a compelling story line. I can't wait for the release of Season 2.
Diese Shows klingen sehr hilfreich!

I agree with most of the recommendations in the comments, but I just wanted to add Queer Eye Germany - it's so wholesome and each episode is in a different city in Germany plus you get to hear how people actually talk. Similarly Nailed It Germany is also really fun if you like baking and also cake fails. Outside of Netflix, I also enjoyed the Cold War spy series The Same Sky
I absolutely loved Dark and I think there is nothing comparable out there. Still, for those who like this kind of series I can recommend "Dirk Gently" (also the "everything is connected"-style 😅 but a bit more weird and funny) and right now I am watching "Travellers", also really cool. 💯 Thanks Feli as always for your entertaining videos!!! 🥰

Hi Peter, with my Netflix in Germany I can watch "Tatortreiniger" - maybe we all shall swipe to a VPN for no geo-blocking? That seems to be the problem...
Babylon Berlin and How to Sell Drugs Online Fast are two favorites. Although a movie, Run Lola Run fits with some of these titles and Americans should recognize Franka Potente and some of the other actors.
Loved your recommendations,😄 there's also in Prime a 3 Staffel Series called Deutschland 83, Deutschland 86 und Deutschland 89. It's really great, lot of suspense, and it's about the cold war.

I watched a one season crime series called Dogs of Berlin which I liked, although I questioned the portrayal of the Turkish people as being sometimes Turks and sometimes Arabs.
Wow, I don't know how long you've known english, but as someone learning german myself, I envy how good your accent is, I could not tell you speak anything other than english. Also I absolutely love your earrings. Great vibe during the cooking section, love it. Tshcuss!

Only show I’ve watched which was on Netflix a few years back was called “Generation War” set in WWII around 3 friends and how the war totally changes their lives all set in Germany
unsere Mütter und unsere Väter is the German name, great show. She's a crazy liberal so don't expect her to mention the greatest German production of all time.
Feli, Two shows I enjoyed were Babylon Berlin and Generation War. Babalon Berlin covered a lot of history of Germany in the 1920's along with some crime mysteries. I had two years of German in high school 50 years ago, and I can understand maybe 40% if the actors don't speak too fast. Back in the 1980's, I lived in Chicago. A friend took me to a theater that played German movies. We saw Das Boot. By the end of the movie, I was understanding 60% of the dialog. Time and hearing loss have curtailed that ability these days.
Well there is that German NETFLIX show (though it's set in Austria) called "KITZ" which was well produced. KITZ is pretty much a corss between Revenge and Gossip girl set in the Austrian alps. That's the best description I can come up with.
Deutschland 83/86/89 are good series to watch. Loads of suspense with good historical references. The only issue here is whether all are on Netflix. I first watched 83 on Hulu, then 86/89 on Netflix. That may pose a slight challenge.
Thank you for the list. I’ve needed new shows to watch and now that people are traveling more, especially internationally, more German speaking tourists are coming to where I work. These shows will help me scrape the rust off my German speaking capability. However, I don’t believe I will completely get rid of my Badisch accent or mix in the occasional Yiddish pronunciation, which sometimes overlaps with Badisch. Also, the Netflix mini-series “Unorthodox”, while only in English and Yiddish, is a joint American-German project. The Yiddish dialect they speak is difficult for me to understand but it might be of interest to German speakers nonetheless. Word of warning, there is only one past tense in Yiddish (present perfect) and the word order can be different at times. I love your channel and how informative it is.
I am watching Bio Hackers. I am noticing that you like shows where the lead character has some knowledge of the the impending doom yet has bureaucracy blockades to save the World. This is better than Dark.
Not too long ago, I watched on Netflx a three-episode German miniseries called Over Christmas (Über Weihnachten) and a German movie called Rumspringa. Both are comedy-dramas with dialogue that shouldn't be too complicated for folks learning German.
I am Romanian and I spent my childhood in Romania, until the age of 12. I am not used to doubbing either. I never lived in an English environment, but I am used to movies and series in their original language and with subtitles. That's why I learned Spanish from tv
I was disappointed that Netflix bailed on season 2 of Tribes of Europa. Babylon Berlin is a production masterpiece, that brilliantly recreates the turbulent period of Weimar Germany.
I cannot tell from here in Germany what is available (or not), on US Netflix, however these are shows I enjoy as a Canadian living here in Germany, listed first with those on Netflix here, followed by shows not on Netflix that I enjoy regardless : On Netflix: Hubert und Staller - police procedural/sitcom Raumpatrulle Orion - black and white German contemporary to Star Trek - ran pretty much parallel, even started the same month, about 2 weeks after Star Trek's debut Not on Netflix: Der Lehrer - High School procedural with really great episodes. München Mord - Absolutely brilliant crime procedurals in a series of TV movies. Offbeat but amazing Masked Singer Germany - Pretty obvious
Hubert & Staller is also shown on TV on the Servus TV channel. I didn't know the series, but I happened to look in and was surprised by the humor. Is better than many English or US comedy series.
14:27 - 15:30 Perhaps you should've mentioned that it is based on real historical events: the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, better known as the Varus Battle in Germany.
With me trying to learn and practice deutsch I’m very excited to have this list and can’t wait to start watching these shows! Thanks for this awesome list can’t wait to get started!!! Danke Feli!
The funniest show I’m watching now on Netflix isn’t German; its Korean and its titled Business Proposal. Its about the President of a food company who seeks to marry the girl on the wrong side of the tracks to get his pushy grandfather to stop harassing him about his not being married yet! Its a true romantic comedy with the emphasis on the comedy part.
Dark is one of my all-time favorite shows! My teenage sons and I like it so much, while we were in Berlin in April we went to three of the filming locations for Dark - the church - Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf, the bridge - Königsweg Brücke and the high school - Reinfelder Schule. It was so fun to visit these places. I have watched several of the shows you mentioned and do have to recommend Babylon Berlin. It's a great show too. Some other German shows that I really enjoyed (some are on Prime, others on Netflix) include Generation War ( Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter), Dogs of Berlin, Line of Separation (Tannbach) and the Charité series. One thing I've noticed, a lot of the same German actors are in a lot of these shows. Nothing wrong with that, they're all great actors!!!
for Americans it is certainly interesting to know that our German Avenger and Marvel superhero Ayo from the Dora Milaje (Florence Kasumba) plays a role in "Criminal Deutschland". She gives also her English voice to Shenzi, one of the hyena in Walt Disney's Lion King.
I'm German and I'm brushing up my French at the moment by watching the series "Plan Coeur". I've watched it in French with French subtitles and it has been really good and very funny. Plus I did learn a lot of new French words and slang. Highly recommend!! 🤩👍
I just did my intro lesson on Kleo. I didn't realize how much I'd like seeing people while I learn. Hopefully that will help overcome the anxiety of speaking to another person in real life.
I am watching The Defeated right now and I am finding it really interesting. We learned all about WWII and the aftermath at school but never learned anything much about the Germans except that they we're the bad guys. This shows a new perspective on the issue showing that things weren't quite so black and white.
I am amazed how well Ben and you work together! Both of you are so refreshingly cute! I really enjoyed your little cooking episode! I could tell Ben’s German has improved from when I watched you together last. Ja Ben, Du hast gute Fortschritte gemacht, mach weiter so! Alles Gute für Euch 2, und für Dich, Ben, auf Deiner Journey in the quest of mastering German! It’s a tough language, the grammar is a real bear! But hey, you’re a smart fellow, das wird schon gut gehen!
Not necessarily on Netflix but certainly on TV in USA and UK, the trilogy Deutschland 83, Deutschland 86, and Deutschland 89 about the final years of East Germany and its spy network in the West. As others have mentioned, Babylon Berlin has been terrific and, following on from the award winning film Das Boot, there is a TV series covering not only events at sea but those back at the home port involving the French Resistance. The 3rd series has just been released.
@@robinbaylor2672 Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89 were shown on More 4 and are available on All4. Babylon Berlin and Das Boot were on Sky Atlantic and NowTV.
@@robinbaylor2672 No, that's in the UK. If you check out the programme titles on Wikipedia, it gives the US channels they were broadcast or streamed on.
As a German student and expat in Germany for almost 1 year, i have watched half of the shows in your. So loved Dark and How to sell drugs online, absolutely love Anke Engelke, and Das Letzte Wort was a super funny and well made movie. Perhaps some honorable mentions for your list would be Rising High - Movie (absolutely excellent), then Issi & Ossi - Movie - (great) and Dogs of Berlin - 1 Season (binge-worhty). Hope they are available in the US. I did also take some notes and added some favourites, so thank you for the recommendations! :)
I've watched Dark, Biohackers, Dogs of Berlin, Criminal however Babylon Berlin is by far my favorite German show. Looking forward to season 4 this summer.
First, Ben, good job! Second, when we had MHz World on antenna here in the Denver area, we had Türkisch Für Anfänger, Tatort: Borowski, and Der Tatortreiniger - and I definitely saw Bjarne Mädel on How To Sell Drugs Online! Now sadly we only get DW with none of the international series. I liked Borowski because while my family isn't German, a lot came to America from Kiel.
I managed to TiVO Türkisch für Anfänger complete before MHz World went off the air about a year ago; the San Francisco affiliate ran 4-6 episodes a day in rotation for a few years. The comedy series they also broadcast that I didn't quite get to was Crime Scene Cleaner. The premise is intriguing enough that I'd buy it on DVD, if I thought I could get it in Region 1 with subtitles. One element of a lot of European entertainment that baffles me is their insistence on dubbing for export, sometimes with questionable translations. A movie I saw and enjoyed when it came out in the 80s was Doris Dörrie's "Männer" (1985). I've now bought it twice on VHS from two different publishers, and both editions turned out to be poorly dubbed into English that's very different from the subtitled version I saw several times in theaters. Quatsch! American practice for foreign language movies/TV is to subtitle; any American that's chosen to watch media in a different language has already accepted that they'll need to read. I've been doing it for 50 years, and I prefer it. If I can't hear the original actors in the original language, I lose a lot of the nuance. Two examples indicating the value of subtitles: 1) There's an early scene in the original 1980s version of "Das Boot" where a journalist is being escorted below decks on the titular U-boat. The second mate observes that the life preservers they've been equipped with won't be useful in the Atlantic "because they were tested in the Baltic" (in the English subtitles)/"im Donau" (the Danube River, in the original German). That's a pretty big difference. How would you know the translators made that choice, if you couldn't hear the original German? 2) In the 2010-2022 Danish political drama "Borgen" (currently on Netflix, the fourth season premiered in February; OUTSTANDING series, well worth watching), one key point is that the characters switch back and forth between Danish (a language that few people speak) and English (a language that practically all Danes speak), casually and without comment. There are bits of French, German and Spanish popping up as well; but I find it noteworthy as a contextual point that when one character switches from Danish to English, the other characters track right along as if there had been no language shift. It's particularly interesting that the political slang is all in American English, such as referring to all political media consultants as "spin doctors".
@@aquilapetram good catches! As an American I much prefer subs over dubs. I'd rather be able to hear it in the original and read something close to what it means. And yeah, Der Tatortreiniger is definitely a weird one but worth the watch. Respekt!
Haha the Deutche Küche wieners with the German flag logo are Made in USA. Aldi does have some kind of sausages made in Germany though. Also: get "unprocessed" sausages and ham with no sodium nitrite. Aldi usually has these. And potatoes or sausages or almost anything else can be steamed which saves energy and for vegetables keeps more vitamins in. And it's "Twin PeakS." Also Ben is adorable.
Feli, My wife and I have really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for the list of German shows we will check out. I was surprised that you did not include The Wave on your list. It makes you think about human societal relationships and the power of groups when a high school class project spins wildly out of control.
Babylon Berlin. I've seen many of those. Good shows, especially Dark and How to Buy Drugs Online, but Babylon Berlin is also fantastisch. It's a period piece set in Berlin in during the Weimar Republic. Very engaging.
Babylon Berlin and You Are Wanted are also great shows on Netflix. Babylon Berlin is particularly good for the range of accents it has, as well as for portraying the Berlin dialectic phrases and words. There are also a few stand-up specials in German. Not every reference is easy to understand, but they give a great view of German humour. Das Boot (the new version) is a great series (3 seasons so far) but is on HULU rather than Netflix. It's in German, English and French. The old movie and mini-series (from the late 80's) may also be available some places.
Good series list. Ill have to check out Dark, I'll mention a show I've watched recently call "Die Kasierin" if you're into historical drama it's Worth a watch for a 6 part show.

I watched Babylon Berlin was a great show
Deutschland 83/86/89 are good series to watch.
I think it's cool that your boyfriend is learning some german.
I am watching Bio Hackers. I am noticing that you like shows where the lead character has some knowledge of the the impending doom yet has bureaucracy blockades to save the World. This is better than Dark.
Check out Babylon Berlin. Great show that portrays Berlin just prior to the start of WW 2.
Well done Ben!! Sehr Gut!!!
Finish series “Border Town” leave in native language and turn on subtitles
Not too long ago, I watched on Netflx a three-episode German miniseries called Over Christmas (Über Weihnachten) and a German movie called Rumspringa. Both are comedy-dramas with dialogue that shouldn't be too complicated for folks learning German.
I love watching German TV shows. I really liked Babylon Berlin and always watch them in German with English subtitles.
Dark was sick. I usually don’t like non English stuff but this was good.
I am Romanian and I spent my childhood in Romania, until the age of 12. I am not used to doubbing either. I never lived in an English environment, but I am used to movies and series in their original language and with subtitles. That's why I learned Spanish from tv
I watched both the billion dollar close and the making of that code show. I love both of them
Yay! I've got more shows to watch now. Love British TV, Fleabag and Happy Valley are some of my favorites. Thanks for putting this together!
I was disappointed that Netflix bailed on season 2 of Tribes of Europa. Babylon Berlin is a production masterpiece, that brilliantly recreates the turbulent period of Weimar Germany.
oh damn, didn't know that
Queer eye germany! Very cute show and very faithful to the orginal editing and production-wise. 🥰
Babylon Berlin - fascinating historical fiction
I cannot tell from here in Germany what is available (or not), on US Netflix, however these are shows I enjoy as a Canadian living here in Germany, listed first with those on Netflix here, followed by shows not on Netflix that I enjoy regardless :
On Netflix:
Hubert und Staller
- police procedural/sitcom
Raumpatrulle Orion
- black and white German contemporary to Star Trek
- ran pretty much parallel, even started the same month, about 2 weeks after Star Trek's debut
Not on Netflix:
Der Lehrer
- High School procedural with really great episodes.
München Mord
- Absolutely brilliant crime procedurals in a series of TV movies. Offbeat but amazing
Masked Singer Germany
- Pretty obvious
Hubert & Staller is also shown on TV on the Servus TV channel. I didn't know the series, but I happened to look in and was surprised by the humor. Is better than many English or US comedy series.
@@inotoni6148 The police side of it is pretty good too. Better than 'reality' shows like Blaulichtreport, I would say...
Danke Feli!
Where's Kleo in the list. Kleo is absolutely brilliant
I’m surprised Babylon Berlin isn’t on here. I thought it was the most popular and critically acclaimed German Netflix show?
I believe its a TV show but Netflix shows it in the US
Already finished 3 of the thumbnails, this was a much needed video
Can't believe Babylon Berlin isn't on the list 😢
for Americans it is certainly interesting to know that our German Avenger and Marvel superhero Ayo from the Dora Milaje (Florence Kasumba) plays a role in "Criminal Deutschland".
Biohacker and tribes of Europa are so good. Finished tribes of europa only 2 hours ago lol. Disappointed to find out that there is no season 2.
Thanks for these recommendations!
Impressive job Ben!
Thanks Feli. I've seen a couple of shows already, but the hints to the others look inviting.
So happy for your BF! Learning a new language is so exciting and learning German is a HUGE accomplishment. He should be proud! 😊
Super Video Feli! Danke
I was only able to get Deutschland 83 from Amazon. Where can I get the others?
@@robinbaylor2672 Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89 were shown on More 4 and are available on All4. Babylon Berlin and Das Boot were on Sky Atlantic and NowTV.
@@phoebus007 I’m sorry I don’t even know what those are. Are they available in the US?
@@robinbaylor2672 No, that's in the UK. If you check out the programme titles on Wikipedia, it gives the US channels they were broadcast or streamed on.
time to add another one to the list: KLEO! one of the best shows I've ever seen 😊
Respekt!
We got it here in the Denver area over PBS Ch. 12.3 before they replaced it with DW once they shut down. It's too bad. I liked the variety.
Feli,
My wife and I have really enjoyed your videos. Thanks for the list of German shows we will check out. I was surprised that you did not include The Wave on your list. It makes you think about human societal relationships and the power of groups when a high school class project spins wildly out of control.
Skylines, Oktoberfest Beer and Blood, We Are the Wave, and Tempel are sone of my favorites. Also TRIBES OF EUROPA IS AN AMAZING SERIES!
Thank you for the German series suggestions! Vielen Dank!
Feli you look so cute with your hair up, you should were it up more often on your podcast
Hi. How can I watch the second season of “Das Boot”. I can only find the first season in Hulu. Excellent series. Danke sehr!
Good series list. Ill have to check out Dark, I'll mention a show I've watched recently call "Die Kasierin" if you're into historical drama it's Worth a watch for a 6 part show.
You know? It would be pretty neat to see you collab with Calvin and Habs haha
