I was hooked on this game from the start. I purchased my first computer at Cosco in 1998 for $500 bucks. I logged onto AOL and got mail. The mail was of this game called Asherons Call. It was a demo. I downloaded it and ran up and down a road killing creatures called Druges. I sighed up for Beta that very moment. A few months later another e-mail notified me that the game was now in Beta. I had forgotten all about it. I logged in and ran around with everyone else trying to figure out what this game was all about. I got stuck between a table and the wall. I called out in general chat for help. I was instantly freed and thanked for my help for finding an error in the game. I was hooked from that day on. I purchased the game the very first day it hit the stores and played on Thristledown and Dark Tide from day 1 to closing. I never played a single minute of WOW. I still own the computer and the CD which are both boxed up and stored in my garage.
Haven’t played since wow came out. I DL’d the emulated yesterday and started the facility hun quests. A LOT has changed, many new skills, spells etc. thatnks for this video. I couldn’t remember or didn’t know a lot of what you showed, so thanks for the tutorial!
This is the first game I was able to sell virtual items and make money, it was crazy! I loved how the stats allowed you to do things that if others did not have it they could not do some content. Notably I recall some locations if your jump was not high enough you could not do some things other could do...
I used to play this back on Darktide... It' still the most enjoyable MMO I have ever played. You're correct on the learning curve, it was so ahead of it's time! I really enjoyed the PvP aspect, with no safe zones, protecting leveling spots and cities. It really helped create community and a world when there was so much empowerment by the players to run the game in that way.
Excellent job on the video love the narration and the speech delivery Non Game music is a little bit loud game sound should come up a little bit for those of us who enjoy listening to the game while at work
Nice overview. So, the Pages tab will show a list of all the pages in your journal. I like to label each page by what information I keep on it (quests, POI, NPCs, etc). Instead of clicking through page by page, go to the Pages tab to click instantly to the one you want. Also, the reason you are teleporting when you click on map is you are an admin on your server. You can tell by the + by your toon name.I believe you can use server commands to change status to just player to stop that.
everquest overshadowed ac because it came out first. that's literally the only reason. most people went to eq and never looked back. only the few of us that were just starting to hear about this new thing called "mmo's" and somehow missed eq entirely randomly found ac first and never looked back. ac was a better game in every way except popularity.
vitae penalty doesn't reduce experience. It reduces skills and secondary attributes down to a maximum of -50%. As you earn xp it slowly removes this penalty (restores your vitae)
If I recall correctly, the Horse had to do with your Chess rank, introduced in the Festivus event in Oct 2002, how could you not remember - it was only 21 years ago lol.
I really love this game still, after having played it when first came out, until it and the Devs went to sleep. Asheron's Call was the 1st "CHARACTER CAN DO CRAFTING" game too. 👍👍 10k🌟🎅 Maj. Grumpy aka "Olde Pharte Gamer" waves hello! 👍👍 10k💖🎅
mistakes from retail asheron's call: 1. Eliminating spell research 2. Covenant armor and gear power creep in general 3. Bots and addons (not fighting them harder) 4. Burun 5. the great creature-rebalance-pocalypse brought to you by the turbine interns who took over later on 6. facility hub and town network 7. "updating" the lugians and lugian citadels 8. making everything a playable race 9. asheron's call 2 10. casinos 11. spell training npc's in arwic and just the abomination that is the modern arwic city in general 12. weekly tokens 13. level 8 spells 14. the drudge "fort" near holtburg 15. prismatic arrows 16. the entire "master of arms" update in feb 2012 17. the updated drudge, mosswart, banderling and tumerok art models 18. eliminating spell economy 19. nerfing life magic drains 20. not expanding on the gromnies as a creature group in the game 21. replacing the original starter dungeon/locations with the academy 22. nerfing original hoary mattekar robe (was originally UP to all unbuffed) 23. all of the changes to original shadow armor
Is there a way I myself can play this game? I tried years ago but was unsuccessful. Would you happen to know where i could find a tutorial on setting it up? I would also need a copy of the game too i guess.
Have a look at AC Emulator: emulator.ac/ if you haven't already. In particular check out the FAQ, it will guide you through the process of setting up the client. There are public servers out there, or if you want to setup your own personal server (which I did) it will walk you through that as well.
Check out the description in my Asheron's Call - Let's Play! - The Getting Started Series - Intro and Character Creation video, it has links to download and install the emulator as well as the Thwarg launcher which has a list of available public servers.
This is the greatest MMO of all time and there isn’t even a close second.
100% truth friend. It's a shame so many Dev's and Studios refuse to take AC as inspirational material for a modern MMO.

Really appreciate the info man! Played every mmo in existence I thought but this one truly is the grandmaster of them all.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm still trying to get used to the whole editing thing, I'll make a note for next time.
Horse is chess related, you can play chess with other players at special boards around towns
Played back in the day the first year on leafcull, whish I could get back into it. Game needs a remake.

How are you playing this as of 2 weeks ago? The game was shut down years ago... Do you know of private servers or what gives?
