Thanks for this. I seem to remember a big comparison article in a Circus magazine- or maybe Hit Parader- comparing 5150 to EEAS- on many aspects. Lyrics was one- and the writer commented on the rhyming lyrics on Love Walks In- saying something like "where is my Dio swatter?"😊 As I read the article - it gave me a better perspective of Sheenan/ Vai - hadn't heard of them before they joined Dave. I think the article gave a slight slight edge to VH at the end. It was sure a hot topic for me and some of my friends- which album/band was better. While I enjoyed EEAS a lot - 5150 for me. Looking forward to any perspectives/ videos you have on Skyscraper vs OU812😉 -or ALAE vs For Unlawful.... Great channel- thanks for all you do🇨🇦
Good episode. I love Eat'em and Smile. I went to that tour and Skyscraper. Though Billy did not tour for Skyscraper. He had left the band to start Mr. Big. I was a huge Talas and Sheehan fan. I recommend checking out 1985 by Talas recently released. This was the band and pretty much the set list of that time. It brought me to being pinned against The Channel's stage back in Boston. Then of course Billy joined DLR. And DLR is a great vocalist. He has great pitch and character that he brings to each song. There is video footage of Vai and Sheehan right here on UA-cam from Montreal during the Eat'em and Smile tour. Dueling solos. Once again great show.
Mike was so underrated, I have said this for so many years. His high harmonies were the major difference in the VH sound. He made the VH sound the hard rock with a Beach Boy flair with those backing vocals. His bass playing couldn't step all over the greatest guitarist of all time (IMHO). And people don't realize Eddie and Alex made up the rhythm section. Mikey was the low end instrumentally.
Dave definitely wins this round. Steve Vai could throw new licks and melodies at you all night. Of all the guitarists that I’ve seen live Steve Vai has the most creativity and musical flow. Outstanding
Unfortunately after Skyscraper it was all downhill for Roth. He wasn’t a songwriter and his output lacked the memorable riffs once Vai left. That aside, I caught him on the Skyscraper tour at MSG and the show was spectacular which is what you would expect from Roth.
Yeah, so just my random opinion, but I liked the new version of Van Halen with Hagar, and if you saw DLC live, I bet it was amazing. I can't imagine the jams those three guys had. However, as for the content they released, I wasn't a fan. I was a `huge` Vai fan. Still am! I saw him live with Frank Zappa, and had `no idea` who he was at that time. In fact, when he first started playing lead, I was thinking `who's this jackass?` That lasted about, oh, 10 minutes. LOL Bottom line for me anyway, is I just don't like Roth, and I thought what they produced had some awesome stuff in it, but if Roth had not been involved and it was just Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette jamming it would have been better than what they released.
Eat ‘Em A Smile was pure Dave. Kinda like a Zappa album on steroids. 5150 is a hard rock masterpiece. Eddie’s master thesis. There isn’t a comparison-unless you are a member of the Roth Army. Or some dude who still remembers the day they picked up the first Van Halen album in 1978. Eddie moved on. You should, too.
Eat em & smile says it all & that's what Dave did. 5150 was an overprocessed not so good album. Imagine putting 5150 out after 1984, it's shameful. Eat em and smile was a logical evolution and way better
Eat Em & Smile was Van Halen on Speed, Unfortunately Steve and Billy were only hired hands so they could not reel in DLR's Vuadville Lunge act so you would get 3 or 4 great songs then you got I'm Just a Gigolo or Thats Life. Meanwhile EVH was growing tired of the Vuadville act and wanted to expand his musical directions Sammy was perfect for that. DLR put on better shows and Van Halen gave us better songs
It’s interesting article、isn’t it? This article is a bit extreme but clear opinion. DLR 86 band 、All members are great. But VH 86 have very tight sounds & groovy sounds. 5150 album is super. VH86 & DVR86 =win、win Sabbath80 & Ozzy80 =win、win Purple76 & RAINBOW76 =Little bit RAINBOW win Floyd87 & Waters87= Little bit Floyd win in my opinion
For me it’s DLR all day, put the personality aside, I was lucky enough to see both of these tours and it wasn’t even close now I saw 5150 VH 1st and came away thinking that was good because it was new and because I had seen the original VH already and this version didn’t stack up, than I saw the DLR tour with Cinderella opening on their debut album back before Keifer’s vocal problems , BTO opened for 5150 eh, DLR came with such energy and I was right up front you could feel it I had never seen a bass player like Sheehan and a guitar play like Vai, and Dave was Dave As for as song writing nothing Van Hagar can touch the original VH , they had become a pop band, Even now I still listen to Eat’m and Smile I can’t remember the last time I listened to 5150, You put Van Halen on Dave’s album cover it sells double huge tour like 1984 it was a Van Halen rock and roll record, oh and I saw Sammy solo on the 55 tour with Dokken opening Tooth and Nail I went for Dokken and was not disappointed
Billy Sheehan is very annoying. You can give him a 10 but what are you basing that on? Yeah he's "technically" a 10. But taking other things in to the equation, like his ability to play for the song which brings him down to a 2 in that category, how can you really give a score of 10?
I think Van Halen lost their edginess when David Lee Roth left. His influence on Van Halen's music is clearly evident in its absence. And although I love Alex and he's always been a huge inspiration but as a drummer I know for a fact that Greg bissonnet is a much better drummer. I saw both bands that year. Seeing Van Halen without David Lee Roth was kind of bittersweet live. I really didn't care for Sammy Hagar's contributions. David Lee Roth with his great band put on an over the top show just as one would expect from a band compiled of virtuosos. David Lee Roth was trying to make a point by getting the cream of the crop players. The new Van Halen sounded like they just came out of rehab. Where David Lee Roth's music had that party time, edginess to it, something the new Van Halen music lacked.
Stylistically, Hagar (mediocre /generic) vocals and as well below average lyricist makes him about a 2. As percussionists go: Alex isn’t half the drummer the calibre of Bissonette
EEAS was ok , songwriting average. High level noodling . I didn’t care for the live show , Dave jumped the shark. Vai isn’t a 10 , more like a 7 . I prefer Anthony in what he brings to the band Alex is close to a 10 Sheehan is great at lead , maybe it’s just not my thing. Bissonette is probably a 7 I prefer the VH rhythm section and Edward. Hagar / belcher ? He was good on 5150 for the most part. I’m not a fan
Both Roth and VH's Albums are good for that time period, but compared to 1984 Van Halen? Sorry, it's timeless!, like back in black still is. Let's be honest here, dreams? Or Jump? Why can't this be love? Or Panama? Summer nights? Or Hot for teacher?
Hagar is just mediocre in comparison to a lot of singers of that time. 5150 is mediocre too in comparison to the previous albums. Hagar also is annoying and boring, it doesn't have the stage persona like DLR.
Big VH Fan, not a fan of 5150. Never owned it still to this day. I like OU812 better. F.U.C.K., BALANCE Is better. Im still a original 6 pack fan. EAT EM AND SMILE Rocks!. Sammy Belcher is NOT a good guitarist 😆. Van Hagar is aimed at soccer moms and corporate listeners. The Original VH is for the real fans. 5150 sounds way too dated. "Get Up" is the worse song theyve done to that point too.
Definitely David Lee Roth worst singer and album nothing but a showman and Sammy Hagar better and definitely 5150 it better dlr definitely not better horrible album
Here's the thing, Van Hagar was a perfect pairing of musical talent. First, Sammy did not need VH for celebrity. He had been going for over a decade at that point. 1984's VOA was(still is) a great album and a huge hit. He couldn't drive 55 and look what it got him. Second, VH didn't need Sammy's celebrity, neither. Sammy made it possible for Eddie to be his best. Sammy only played rhythm guitar on the albums and live despite being accomplished himself. It was a good match. 5150 is the better album and Mikey's backing vocals are perfect for any occasion.
5150 is a top 5 VH album. That said, no other Van Hager ever lived up to it. Eat ‘em and Smile is good not great. Vai ends up smoking Ed later in the 80s.
Michael Anthony wasn't the weak link, he was the secret weapon.
*Mike rating too low ...as we all know that he provided those incredible background vocals. Can't put rating on that .
I still remember being hypnotized by the Eat Em and Smile billboards as a kid.
5150 by miles, bloody awesome album. Not even a contest.
I was on Dave's side day one 10 years old
Thanks for this.

The "critic" here didn't take lyrics into consideration and IMO DLR was far superior in that regard. Awesome video 👍
Eat 'Em And Smile was a fun album, but I think that 5150 has stood the test of time better as a classic album. Both are good though.
Sam Halen needed that time to gel and they got it
Balance and F.*.C.K.are spectacular sounding...
Vai and Bisonette 🙏✌️🤘🇦🇺
Eat Em’
Mind blowing playing

Which lineup hit number one again?
Unfortunately after Skyscraper it was all downhill for Roth. He wasn’t a songwriter and his output lacked the memorable riffs once Vai left. That aside, I caught him on the Skyscraper tour at MSG and the show was spectacular which is what you would expect from Roth.
Mikey's Vocal on Jamies Cryin' was the Hook,
the rest is history...we thought it was Eddie before Videos...
David Lee Roth’s album is the better of the two albums.
DLR era Van Halen is bombproof….5150 was the best Van Haggar album…but I liked Eat’em and Smile better…
Sorry couldn’t get into DLR solo. Too goofy and campy. VH wins this iMO

Alex just released a signature Cowbell...$99.99.

S.H. Dragged the band down. I thought that then and sill do.
👍🏻. We listen to VH for Eddie Well, at least I do.

5150 was the worst VH Album to that point...
Thank you!
Wrong.
EEAS was more rockin. 5150 was too much with the lovey dovey bs.
Highly subjective and meaningless "scoring" system.
I Love the DLR Band on the 1st two Albums...
Hagar is just mediocre in comparison to a lot of singers of that time. 5150 is mediocre too in comparison to the previous albums. Hagar also is annoying and boring, it doesn't have the stage persona like DLR.

Halen became way too wimpy
