I'm thinking about moving back to UK from Turkey 🇹🇷. Love the idea of living on a narrow boat. You are the first person I have found to give a real opinion of what to expect. Thank you.
Thinking of the same lol am living in Spain but before I came here I lived in a motorhome for five years. It was 23 feet in length so do you need a 60 foot boat. Am thinking of something up to 27 foot so I can tow it if I what'd to
Thank you so much! This video is incredibly helpful. I’ve never heard anyone mention ’boat blues’ before, but it makes perfect sense that after the excitement of getting a narrowboat wears off and you’re faced with struggles of maintenance it can feel overwhelming. And probably even more so for solo boaters. Really loving your channel! Thanks once again for sharing this.
Love the video. Down to earth, practical and knowledgeable. Love the bit about narrow boat blues....im thinking of buying a narrow boat next year and already in a panic about it 😅. All the best.
Charlie you really are a natural at this "vlogging lark" . . . . . A really good, informative and friendly vlog, nailed the pace and delivery. good on you Charlie, loved every minute. stay safe and happy cruising mate.
Fantastic video, really informative, interesting and inspiring. I’m taking the narrowboat plunge shortly and this video and your excellent commentary makes things much less daunting. Thankyou so much.
It's amazing how some of these boats that are 30-40 years old have fantastic hulls and some less than 20 years are so bad they're uninsurable. One important thing to me as a very ex electrician to look for is that if the boat has the ability for shore power, that it has a galvanic isolator and that it's not brand new(someone fitted it to help sell the boat). Earthing faults with the shore power, that you won't even know are there can eat the hell out of the hull very quickly, it's normally pretty obvious to a surveyor but not always. Thanks for the vid 😁
Yeah, I need to sort out what’s happening with Music because it sounds fine when I’m editing it but for some reason when it goes to UA-cam, it gets really loud
Thank you so much for this video. I'm about to buy my first boat and this is one of the most useful resources I've found so far! I noticed your controller on the side, does the hybrid setup you mentioned support a gaming console? Looking forward to watching the rest of your videos ❤
Oh, I’m so glad you found my video helpful yes my set up supports my PlayStation 4 and a big TV it’s fantastic but you need to do a electrical audit and figure out how much power you need
Oh Basil 😍 great vlog Charlie - really interesting to talk about the practicalities of boat life. I’m really enjoying your vlogs - you have such a warm personality 🥰
Just caught up on the vids. Loving it Charlie! Hope you enjoy the countryside and will look forward to seeing you soon! Also don't forget there's a canal in Manchester if you ever fancy a visit x
Hi Charlie enjoyed the vlog and you give me a lot of things to think about. I live in Australia and I'm thinking of moving back to England (retiring) to a narrowboat. Don't think downsizing will be a issue but being on the other side of the world looking at boats is, so something to think about. Cheers Keith
that’s fantastic. I’m glad you’re thinking about moving to the waterways. It really is a fantastic way of life. It slows down but also speeds up at the same time. It’s a very strange one. Good luck with the boat hunt.
Well done Charlie- really informative- am interested in hearing more about your hybrid battery system. I’m doing up a 47ft narrow boat at the moment, just had it out the water to black it ( sodding hard work) and paint it - now I’m starting on the interior, it is an empty shell - so exciting and daunting and can totally resonate with boat blues x
nice one. I'm currently looking for a narrow boat to live on and this was helpful :) Honestly after the initial bulk payment for a boat it seems manageable financially monthly. At least, it's a lot less than I'd be paying to rent around here as starting rates are about £700 a month with bills on top. I've been to view a fair few now and getting an idea for what I need. It's honestly all very daunting, there's so many things to learn.. not that they're too hard to learn but there's a lot to get to grips with. I'm probably overthinking a lot too. Honestly it's silly little things but it seems they're all made a little different. Just finding an on switch for the power can be confusing., I'm just unfamiliar I guess. I suffer with ADHD so I can have really down periods., I'm expecting some blues. It's a big decision and you're always going to question big purchases like that when you only really get this kinda shot a few times in life. Touch wood I get no unsolvable dramas. I have no doubt it'll be a big change to life, honestly I'm embracing it. They'll be good days and bad days but I'll rest well knowing I have my own place.. after being in a homeless shelter for 5 months over the last year it'll be nice to have somewhere to make my own again.
Hi Charlie, great to see you both again. You hit on some good points for people thinking about living on a narrowboat, I don't think I could do it, for various reasons but I can't deny I am very envious of you and others that make it their lifestyle. My question is, how do you get post/parcels, I mean I know you don't get electricity/gas bills like a house owner but what about other stuff, car insurance/documents, passport, hospital/doctor appts etc etc. You can't live in a caravan ( legally ) and use that site as a permanent home address but at least that's static, a narrowboat isn't, so how does that work? Lot's of love to you both, big kisses to Basil.🐕😘
Interesting and useful information, Charlie, thank you. I like the idea of compost toilets, but how do you dispose of the compost legally? From what I understand, composted, human waste is toxic and can only be considered safe after a year or more of composting. Unless there's an official collection point nearby (C&RT don't have any) I can't see how it can be done, especially if you're a continuous cruiser. A lot of your advice applies when buying sailboats too. 😊 I think you can do away with any music, your voice is so pleasant to listen to. Cheers! Liz 🙏
Hi Liz, there’s a company that comes and picks it up. And they use it for actual composting it cost about £30 a month. Yes, Music is a pain in my arse for some reason. The music sounds nice and quiet when I’m editing it on my laptop but as soon as I upload it to UA-cam all the levels go crazy. I need to try and figure out why this is happening and stop it from happening.
@@charlieandbasil Hi Charlie, I found the same issues with music when uploading to youtube, I found it better to not use music while talking...most folk prefer it that way anyway; Not that I have ever made a lot of youtube video's tbh...around 9 and that was a few years ago 😆

Hi Charlie, Question After watching your logs, I'm thinking you may be the man to ask re carpenter ideas. I'm planning on making a platform for my narrowboat roof (for climbing up on roof and sitting) and was thinking of fitting a car roof box after platform. Have you any advice? Do you have a wood box???? Cheers😁

I think a lot of people have gone down quite an expensive route. But if you’re able to do a lot of the work yourself, you can get a cheap boat and make it your home. !!
No, the boat would still definitely float and I think a lot of people don’t pay a license. But I think it’s a little bit unfair if you dont.
