Venus Optics 'Laowa' 60mm f/2.8 Macro 2:1 lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

- Venus Optics are a new, Chinese lens manufacturer who are specializing in manual focus, macro lenses...often with special capabilities. This particular macro lens can focus twice as closely as a normal 1:1 macro lens, without the need for extension tubes. With the overall quality of lenses manufactured in China greatly increasing these days - this could be a really interesting offering.

This video includes my new test chart, as I've moved to a new place far away from all my old shooting locations. I've tried to make it a colourful one.
My Canon 70D had to be sold as I was saving up for my wedding/ honeymoon, so I'm still using my old Canon 60D. It's kind of falling to pieces by now! All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 6D and 60D cameras.

If you sold a t-shirt that said "Very Sharp Indeed" on it, I'd probably buy it.

+Christopher Frost Photography Hello, I see many of your videos, and are quite clarifying up even for me who am relatively new in the world of photography, so I would like to know what you think in relation to this objective Canon EOS AF EF 35-70mm f / 3.5-4.5, i looked on your channel but you do not have video on it and i recently found one for sale for 45 € / 34.3British pounds, what do you think of the lens? you can help?
+Hugo Oliveira I haven't tried any of the old 35-70 lenses...they might be alright but it's not a very attractive zoom range
+Christopher Frost Photography Thx for the help =D, And sorry if I'm abusing but i liked to get another opinion on another lens the Sigma 18-200mm F / 3.5-6.3 DC
I saw it on sale in the store CEX (if am not mistaken this shop also exists in the UK) for 95 €, I think is 72.23 pounds, is a great option?
+Hugo Oliveira It'll be okay - just a standard ultrawide angle lens, really. I'd save up for the Canon 18-135 STM, myself
Yesterday Saturday I shot a few teenagers going to their high homecoming dance. The shots were outside and I was really happy with the sharpness. It was absolutely AMAZING I'm glad I heard about this lens.
“I shot a few teenagers going to their high homecoming dance”
I've been waiting for someone to review this lens properly! Thank you so much Christopher for your great work as per usual!!
Nice review. I still miss that old house though....
Good review. I like using this lens for ring photos at weddings. Works great on mirror less too.
Love your sense of humour in the reviews too. :)
the lens is very cool, recently I started my watch channel using this lens too.
Nicely described. So far i brought every lens which is in 500$ range & you recommended highly. This will be in my bag within 10-15 days.
+Zahidul Hasan Buy 2 :)
Super cool lens. Venus Optics may not be the cheapest, but they're doing what I hoped the Chinese would do all along.. offer a unique perspective from a unique culture. Creativity at long last, and a fantastic go, at least. Really nice to see.
Thanks for your fantastic review (and so many others). I love these unique lenses in particular.
+docstowatch Perspective and culture have nothing to do with this. Don't try to make this to be something it is not. What they are doing is making lenses for which there are no immediate competitors in the market i.e. vacant niches. Which is good for them because they don't have to fight established brands like caniksonygma and it's good for consumers because more diverse products on the market.
docstowatch
You are pretty much parroting the western narrative that chinese people are uncreative for whatever reasons. the reason they copy stuff is because it's easier to copy than do your own R&D when you are utilising your low labour cost to compete, it's a result of economics not human biology.
creativity is an ill-defined excuse for people to feel special anyway and is mostly overrated. most 'creative' process is just trial and error.
+Heron Myer I didn't mean to imply that the Chinese culture itself has within it a special 15mm macro or 60mm 1:2 perspective in their collective mind or cultural heritage, heh. Sorry about that. Rather, I'm referring to how contemporary China squashes the creativity of their educated people. Yet they have been a creative culture in times past, and if UA-cam is to be believed, even their modern day uneducated farmers have some very interesting creative solutions to everyday problems. It is a creative act to identify and fulfill an unfilled niche, especially with no engineering precedents. There's obviously nothing for them to copy, especially with the 15mm macro, unless there were historical lenses like this they got a hold of. They weren't just awaiting orders from a creative person in another culture, nor did they merely knock off an optics product from Germany or Japan.
+Heron Myer Venus, going against the grain of many their contemporaries, had the wherewithal to create something with their own unique perspective in the market. Or at least "a" unique perspective, even if they don't particularly care or aren't personally impassioned regarding this perspective, and are just doing it to be different. For Venus, and in some sense Chinese business at large, this marketing & even engineering creativity, no matter how minor or what the market motivations were, is to be commended and reinforced. The copying culture may have gotten them up to speed, but now that is more than complete, the sooner the copying culture comes to an end, the better. In short: they're making cool stuff, and I'm glad to see it :D
I am looking around for a macro lens, so this review was of great interest to me. Thank you for such a thorough review. By the way I would also buy that T shirt.
really love this lens for my Sony a77ii, the sharpness is exceptional and gob smacking quality, it's also a great macro videography lens. possibly my favourite lens so far.
As always organised and nice review.....looking further for more videos....
I bought a used copy of this lens in Sony e-Mount and really like it for macro work. I usually shoot it at f/11 and it is sharp as a tack.
I'm trying to decide between this and the Laowa 15mm. I want the wide angle and tilt shift of the 15mm, but the super macro ability of the 60mm is equally attractive.
It's a tough choice!
Christopher Frost Photography I have both lenses and they're fantastic
Nice review and when you said China, I had my reservations that the quality wouldn't be that good, but those results are great! I have used Sigma and Tamron macro lenses and love macro photography and your right, getting closer than 1:1 can be interesting.
You said there was no chromatic abrasion, but at 4:25 there is a slight greenish fringing on the left side of the white round area on the image, but then again at f/22, it is past the diffraction limit, so its not important.
+DynamixWarePro Yes, when I looked at the test pictures again there does seem to be a touch of CA as you stop down. It's not unheard of for lenses to show a little more CA stopped down, sometimes
As an avid fuji fan I look forward to some possible fuji lenses reviews. Just be sure to open those raw files in iridiant developer (mac) or silky pix/photo ninja (pc). Adobe currently has awful x-trans raw processing.
+clay cooper I'll be reviewing Fuji lenses in the summer. I'm waiting for a camera to test with with the new 24mp sensor (not getting the X-Pro2 though)
+Christopher Frost Photography i will be interested in the IQ of the 24MP sensor...i have a XE-2 and i really like using it..but i cannot get it to mach the IQ of my 100D..i did post my test RAWs for both for others to edit in software other than lightroom on dpreview.. the best results did match the 100D but was no better so decided not to fully invest in the fuji system at the moment and will sell it ...
Thanks Chris, I've just bought the newest NIkon version, it comes with a filter, a really lovely pouch, they have removed the ugly printing in front of the lens, also the Nikon version has refined grooves on the focus ring, the build quality is really fantastic, most importantly, my copy is as sharp as from your test and it costs only 200 pounds.
i am shock about this lense uff gonna buy this one for sure, thanks for the video, Chris, u have helped me a lot in choosing many lenses trough out this year am a fan of ur work, keep up the good work buddie cheers God Bless u richly
Getting one of these for Christmas to add to my Nikon macro glass arsenal!!! Thanks for the review!!!
Yes, finally your review for this lens come. Thank you, Chris!
Venus should send you their 15mm f/4 1:1. I'd love to see a review of it.
Your reviews are always great. Thank you.
I think you missed an important issue, I believe that there is no mechanical link to the aperture of the lens so you have to shoot through whatever aperture you choose. Meaning if you choose to shoot stopped down as you normally would in macro, the image would be dark and difficult to focus.
That is true! But that's true for most manual lenses, so I don't normally mention it
Very comprehensive review thank you
Another great review - another potential cost for me 😊
+Beverly Evans same for me. My wallet has taken quite a beating ever since I discovered this channel.
Nice review as always Chris. Thanks!
As you use E-mount now, please review Voigtlaender APO-Lanthar 65mm f2. It was the best optics I've ever seen. It is truely apochromatic with no digital correction. Other aberrations are perfectly dealt, too.
As always a great review! Interesting lens. thanks
‘Sealed for freshness’ :D
Wow really impressed with this lens. I have never heard of this company I think I may pick one up for myself.
Great images!
Perfect Review, thank you! I will order it ;)
Hey crhris, love you reviews! In a apsc camera how is the distortion?
I've been wonder whether with these hybrid full frame/APSC lenses, especially the Laowas whether one could use a focal reducer/ booster to squeeze a bit more sharpness from the aperture wide open? Have you or would you consider testing any of the boosters for this kind of thing?
DId I miss the mention of the minimum working distance for the 2:1 macro ?
I ask because I am interest in how difficult lighting would be in a studio setting.
I wonder what the results would be pairing this with extension tubes!?! Pretty damn close to subject I guess!
This is a great lens
a very nice lens.
i am planning to buy one. but meanwhile, i am using a magnifying glass . works well, just a bit cumbersome and hard to hold camera, magnifying glass and wide torchlight emergency lamp.
Sounds like you /really/ need a macro lens
and it would be the Samyang 100mm f/2.8 macro . i felt in love with those Samyang you reviewed, Mr. Frost.
anyway, i just ordered a set of macro /close up filter ( Andoer) +1 +2 +4 +10 for USD $10 only.
i would like to compare the filters with the macro lens... there is no way the filters would win, but it will be an interesting "competition" like david versus goliath. :)
I really like your lens reviews, please keep up the good work! Did you think about reviewing this (china) lens?
Zonlai 25mm f1.8
This lens is identical to the one under the Dorr / Jintu brand for £140 aside from some material changes, I think most of the cost is because of the brand name
Woul love to see examples of distortion on APS-C as I'm planning to scan negatives with this lens and my Fuji. You think this would be a good combo, or I should look to other lenses (Fuji macro) or even extension tubes maybe for regular primes (23/56)
+Christopher Frost Photography Hi, I love your videos and was thinking of getting a macro lens, which do you prefer... The Laowa 60mm F 2.8 Macro or the Canon 60mm F 2.8 USM Macro? Thanks for making awesome videos.
Can i ask what do perfer between this lens and sigma 70mm macro art?? Wich lens make better image quality on fullframe camera? 🌹🙏
Great review! How do you think can this lens be used for capturing intraoral shots in f22 and low light conditions? (because of cheeks blocking most of the light coming out of the mouth)
thankyou for review
It would be awesome if you could do adapted legacy lens reviews with you Fuji.
+Michael Paz Nah, I only rarely test legacy lenses
+Christopher Frost Photography I know, but it's so much easier to adapter them to mirrorless! I saw your other post saying that some Fuji test may be in future. Perhaps we'll see some more once you get through Fuji's fantastic native line up :)
I am little confuse. What would be best Canon 60mm or Laowa 60mm for Canon M50 Mark II?
Chris! Any chance you will review the new laowa 100mm 2:1 ultra macro? I want to pre order it for Sony e mount but I’m scared to buy a lens without watching your review of it first! :(
Aww no Canon version :c
But it looks really rad and the prise is also ok and I have a APS-C camera and love macro photography.
He literally used a canon version in the video 😅.
i have may try it at a macro photoworkshop: great . i should it buy also the 15 mm macrowideangle lenses
Hey Chris, good video, what is the blueish - green at 6:00-6:10 (all over that shot) then went away at f/11. ?? Thanks man and God bless.
+jenky1044 That's called longitudinal chromatic aberration. It's an extremely common optical problem at wide apertures. The only lens I've tested that don't really have that problem is the Samyang 135mm f/2
Ok thank you for your time.. and I think you do a wonderful job reviewing these lenses.
please make a video using this with extension tubes. I'm sure the magnification will be insane :D
+L. Willis i cannot see it will as it will focus closer to the lens and as its almost touching now thats as good as it going to be
Old video so not sure you'll see this comment, but any chance you know what is the working distance (from end of lens) at both x2 and x1? Thanks
Hi Christopher,
do you have an idea why this lens is perfectly sharp at 2.8 with a full frame camera, but not so on a crop sensor ?
I´ve seen this with other lenses too but I don´t really understand why this can be ... as you use both Canon cameras.
This was a nice video again, thanks for it.
It's because of the so-called 'crop factor' that the APS-C sensor, which the Canon 60D, got in this video. So all small imperfections of the lens is magnified (1.6x for Canon if I remember correctly) along with the image, compared to a full-frame camera!
I hope that helped solved any confusion regarding this issue :)
This is amazing! Would you recommend this as my first macro lens?
It's not a bad start. Watch the review to see what it's like
hi Christopher . really good review. just clicked the subscribe button. how do you feel this lens would function a sony a 6000?
Should be pretty good - you'll need a Sony version (if they make one) or an e-mount adaptor
Chris,
Now that you own a Fuji mirrorles camera you should start reviewing lenses from the Fuji stable.
Just my curiosity why did you pick Fuji instead of Sony mirrorless cameras.
+tean tan It was a hard choice. Ultimately I preferred the look of the Fuji jpegs, the style of the cameras themselves (silly I know, but they look so good) and I /far/ preferred Fuji's lenses (from what I've been reading about them) and the philosophy behind them
Said Chinese and I got really excited thinking it would be super cheap.
+MonkeyButt117FTW same xD
+Daniel Han (aka Eternal Torture) I think that's really swell to see creative input/unique perspectives (literally in this case!) from the Chinese, not just poor quality cultural appropriations. Do you know where online the founder said this? I'd love to see a copy of the interview, or post, or whatever it was. Thank you.
There's an lens by Oshiro with the same specs and that looks identical on amazon for 170 USD
Stalker that's right but I haven't seen any comparisons between the two anywhere. I'm so tempted to get the Oshiro, but everyone is raving about the Laowa.
Oshiro a Excellent lens
I have what I "think" is a Laowa 60mm f/2.8 2:1 macro lens but, it looks a bit different from the Laowa. It is metal and heavy. My lens has a tilt arrangement at the camera side of the lens. It has no identification on the lens barrel except "60mm F 2.8 MACRO 2:1 @62mm" wonder what I have...
thanks for review Christopher , can you just tell me one thing, another person in his review stated that lens wont have macro capabilities on a APC-C body, I was planing to get this lens but this stopped me, did you use it on your 60D ?
+cDa Yup, it's perfectly fine on APS-C, in fact the smaller sensor brings you even closer
great, thanks once again
Hi Chris have you reviewed or used the Tamron 28-300 PZD model. If so would love to know what you think of it. As looking at picking it up myself. Cheers
+Jamie Noon No, I haven't. There's a review out there somewhere, I think maybe ephotozine did a review
I'm thinking about this lens instead of the Nikon 60mm 2.8D lens
Some manual lenses still have electronic communication, allowing focus confirmation, exif information etc. Is this the case with this lens too? It would have been interesting with a comparison with Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro, which was a lens that I loved when I was using APS-C .
+Richard Rönnbäck No focus confirmation I'm afraid, but I've never found focus confirmation to be very accurate anyways. The Canon 60mm lens is nice but I'd rather have this Venus lens for the extra magnification, and I think its bokeh is a little nicer, too
Hi! Have you consider to review their Twin Flash?? I'm sure your methods will give good results on it, think about it, thanks!
Nah, these days, I only really have time to review lenses
If I would to buy a telephoto lens, which is either the 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM , 70-300 Tamron and 70-200 F4L IS . I want to know which is the most valuable to buy . Budget is not an issue but if the much cheaper lenses are better than the L lens then it would be nice to know . Hope you reply soon and thanks in advance .
+Syed Ahmad Take a look at my reviews of those three lenses - I cover them in-depth and you'll be able to see which one is right for you. All the best
How about the Oshiro 60mm 2:1 macro? Is it the same, just as good for half the price?
I don't know. It sounds like that might be the same lens being sold under a different name (maybe)
thanks
Hi, nice review. What (ring?) flash do you use with this lens. I own this lens but pictures of small insects etc. at 2:1 is nearly impossible without a ringflash/ringlight, im not shure what i should get
I don't use ring flashes. I tried a cheap one once and it didn't connect with my camera properly, and I don't want to spend money on a proper one
Hey ! First of all, thanks a LOT for all the testing thing, I discovered many things thanks to you (including Samyang lenses and I am a huge fan of it, I bought two of them and use these only). I'm also very interrested in this Venus lens, and even more in the other one : the 15mm. Is there any chance that you would ever test this one ?
Thanks again !
Antoine (France)
+O.H.M Guitarist I'll be testing the 15mm lens in a couple of weeks :-)
I will try to resist until there before buying it... ^^ Thank you !
Is the manual focus a challange on this lens? This sounds a perfect macro lens for me to buy somewhere in the future, but I'm a bit scared about the manual focus, especially when this can have a really short focal length
+minepate Don't be scared :-) just use liveview mode on your camera, and zoom in to see detail before you fire the shutter.
+Christopher Frost Photography thanks!
f2.8 25mm laowa is coming soon.
Hi Christopher, I have got a good deal for a Sony a600 with 16-50mm + 55-210mm and the Minolta MD 50mm 1.7.
After looking at some review I wanted to get the sigma 60mm 2.8 dn art and samyang 12mm f/2. But do I really need them or the the deal I got will be enough for travel?
+MrScarDJ I haven't tried any of that equipment I'm afraid! I hear very good things about the Samyang 12mm lens though.
that lens looks exactly like my Oshiro version.........and it was less than $400
I allready own a Sigma 105 macro, is it worth to add the Laowa 60mm to my collection?
Big difference between 60mm 2:1 and 105mm 1:1? Can't find much comparisons between those two.. hope you can help!
You can see a 1:1 vs 2:1 comparison in this video. It is actually quite a difference. It might be worth selling the Sigma - it's up to you. I really like the difference 2:1 makes
Hey chris, i have a Canon 1200d with the default kit lens and am looking for a new one. I am planning on doing action videos with high quality so need a lens that works with fast pace action and also nice quality, im also interested in vfx (visual effects) so the lens will need to work well with that stuff too. Im on a cheap budget however, any recommendations for a lens from about $300-$400? Thanks
+Gordonco A very nice, low budget lens for video work is the Canon 18-135 STM
is this same/similar lens to Oshiro 2:1 super macro lens (LD UNC 60mm f/2.8 macro 2:1 lens)? It has a similar build, 9 element in 7 groups, 14 blades....
The Oshiro lens seems a copy. Oshiro claims Glass made in Japan and assembly in China. From user samples of the Oshiro I would say it is the same lens in virtually every way. Almost the same price even although the oshiro is currently on sale for less than half of the venus optics version. I would worry about quality control and do tests as soon as I got it to facilitate a possible return if I got a bad sample.
Is it my problem cos I notice some quite strong CA at the corners even stopped down
Yeah, I saw that too, at the test image when stopped down at f/8 to f/22 it's very noticeable at the top-left corner...
can I use for canon r?
Gread video, does this work well with the Sony A7r2? I want it for full frame work
You will need an adaptor to get this lens onto your Sony camera
is it good for filming as well? How much does it "breathe" during focus move? I'm looking for full manual lens for stop-motion.Thanks!
Stop motion video is basically just getting still pictures, so any lens would be fine
That's right.Just interesting how much does it zoom when pulling focus.Have you tried it with this lens?
Can we expect Fuji lenses reviews? I've asked you in late 2014 if you could but I can't remember what was your reply. Anyway, since you have the X-T1, could you do it, please?
+Display Name Yes, but in the summer. I'm way way way way too busy these days...I'm going to settle in to enjoying just using the camera and lenses before I review them, and also I'll need to review lenses on the new 24mp sensor, to future-proof my videos
Christopher Frost Photography I waited a year and few months, I can wait few more I guess lol.
I think Fuji lenses are already future-proof. My 56mm f1.2 is sharper wide-open than my Canon 50mm f1.2L and has way way less CA.
+Display Name I agree. But it's not about the lenses being future-proof - it's about my videos being future proof! If I test everything on a 16mp when in a year's time everyone's using 24mp, then my videos will be outdated
for my 70d which best Venus Optics 'Laowa' 60mm ? 15mm... which you liked the most?
+netowork3d I like them both. They're completely different. If you wait a couple of weeks I'll have a review of the 15mm up :-)
Is this the same lens with a different name to the Oshiro 60mm f/2.8 2:1 LD UNC Ultra-Macro Lens?
No idea, sorry!
you can get same lense much cheaper - less than 160€
de.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20190806015024&SearchText=60mm+2.8+super+macro+2%3A1&switch_new_app=y
There is AF adapter for this which will work with Nikon F Mount Camera?
To give it autofocus?! I don't think so
I have an a6000 Sony that I would like to pair this with. Does it come with an adapter or do I need to buy one.
You'll have to buy your own adaptor
I think I've just lost $400.
Shang-Hsien Yang did u?:)
I don't see sample pictures on Flickr.......
You got all other lenses but not this one.
I've tested around 130 lenses, and they're not all on Flickr yet. I'm uploading those sample pictures gradually
Yes but this is more the 6 month already....
I only started the Flickr page 4 days ago.
Could you please so some Sony lens review for Mirorless. Dslr is just getting old and outdated
+TheHatorihanzoe I ended up going for Fuji rather than Sony in the end. I'll review some mirrorless lenses in the autumn
Is this lens sensitive for dust? It seems to me that the design of the lens is sucking dust between the glass elements.
+Mark Havermans Hasn't happened to mine yet. As with any lens, time will tell
Could you compare this product to Canon MP-E65mm f/2.8 (Macro 1-5X)?
Only in that it gets closer than 1x. The MP-E65mm is a very different and difficult lens to use
what adapter did you use to get the canon mount onto the fuji?
+Philip Vignola A K&F Concept EOS-FX. Made of metal, fits quite nice (no autofocus or electronic aperture control, though)
+Christopher Frost Photography Thanks so much for the info.
Is there a reason you dropped the 70D and kept the 60D
+Mr M "My Canon 70D had to be sold as I was saving up for my wedding/ honeymoon, so I'm still using my old Canon 60D. It's kind of falling to pieces by now! All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 6D and 60D cameras."
+DiPontes Makes sense that the 70D would attract more money than the 60D. I thought for a second you favored the 60D over the 70D other than money
+Mr M Read the descriptions of his videos…
+Giuseppe Pipia Thanks for the heads up :)
Try the 15mm Laowa Pleaaaaaase!
+Aldo Marcelo Benites Palomino he said he´s planning to do so, that was when this review wasnt even online. so probably maybe
That review is up. Check his channel
That's really a nice lens, I might set that as the next lens to get. I'm supprised though that it was less sharp at 2.8 on the APS-C, anyone know why? (might be useful knowledge)
+TheDyingFox The sensors on APS-C cameras tend to be made up of much smaller pixels. This is a greater challenge for any lens, as they pick up imperfections and softness more easily
+Christopher Frost Photography
Makes sense, would be intresting if it was possible to see the effects of a micro 4/3 with the same lens (probably even more soft then).
Now that I think about it though... if it's more difficult for the lens on smaller sensor, would that make an equally sharp APS-C lens more expensive than a Full Frame lens? If the lens is the same in "Focal Length"/"Aperture"/etc...
+TheDyingFox Every lens is different really and it can be hard to predict if a sharp lens on FF will also be sharp on APS-c - that's why I test so much :-)
+TheDyingFox you need less glass to iluminate the smaller sensor properly, so these different aspects might ballance
+Joshua Mack
+Christopher Frost Photography
Hehe, yeah, so many variables, would have been nice to know how it all works (into details) then be able to build a custom lens specificly for the camera being used ^_^, well there are a few super zooms I would like (that has one lens stuck on it), but they tend to sacrifice other things... I believe, not 100% sure... (Such as the Nikon P900)
Hai guys, can this lens use in Canon mirorless?
With an EF - EOS R adaptor, yes
@@christopherfrost
EOS m50
Anyone do test on fujifilm x series?
laowa 60mm or 100mm for macro???
I prefer the 100mm
@@christopherfrost Thanks bro!
Will it work with Sony Alpha 58?
If you can find a Sony A-mount version, then yes
how do you like your fujifilm xt10?
+thuan nguyen LOVE it.
Can I mount this lens to a Sony a6000 ??
With the right adaptor, yes
Christopher Frost Photography thanks!! :)
m requesting lot please look once my request. brother can you make a comparison video between Laowa 60mm f/2.8 Ultra-Macro with canon 100mm Macro f/2.8 L
I can't make loads of comparison videos because I don't have time unfortunately. But if you look at my tests, they're mostly standardized so you can compare yourself.
Thanks for your response, if u don't mind then replay my quest i want to understand whats special in their 2:1 and Ultra macro. Is its just a word or true getting 2:1 magnification ??.
Yes, it really is 2:1 magnification
appreciate your replay brother, god bless you.
Bought it, sold it. Way to many negatives for the 2:1 gimmick. Make sure you put on the filter - first time out, an insect flew into my lens!! Got mired in the grease. Who builds a lens like that? Many better options out there - most with electronic aperture. A miss.
