Speaking as a jazz pianist with a Push 2, playing the Push as an instrument seems much more intuitive for guitarists or bassists to make the transition. That said, he got this good by practicing every day. He really put the time in and it shows.
If you are a guitarist or bassist, set push to chromatic, E, and Phrygian. It’s like looking down at the fretboard. You can also drop a tuner from audio effects in after the instrument to help if you want reference to where you are
E Phrygian is just C major starting on E. When you put the push 2 in E Phrygian, the lit notes will be the same but the lowest note and all the other blue keys will be E.
@Mike S Yes and no. In some ways it's easier to make chords that you would never reach with your hands on a piano, because of the way it's laid out. However, it takes a lot of time to get used to the layout and make something meaningful and less random sounding. I love mine, but it's not a piano. it's totally different and results in a different vibe.
wow, was watching his demo on the guitar center page. and in my head i was thinking, those are some gnarly chords progressions! but that i see how the pads are laid out like a guitar, i see how his intuition kicks in!
Awesome! Cool to hear the Thelonious Monk and Art Tatum influences in there and creating massive cognitive dissonance seeing it done on a Push 2! Very inspiring!
I play piano. Can play a little guitar and bass. Just ordered my push 2. I trust I will adapt to it and express a lot. I think that, with any instrument, one adapts and learns... and then one is able to enjoy and express. Beautiful piece!
To play it as an instrument would take time and practice. Right now, I play better from my normal keyboard. For great, hands-on control of the software, it works great. It's a physical manifestation of the software, and allows you to choose and use virtual instruments, set tempo, record, play, stop where you are (pressing play), and stop and go to beginning (= shift-play). The main THING, still, is the LIVE SOFTWARE.
I think it pays in the end to rewire your brain to seeing the push grid as a keyboard. I just wish there was some visual feedback as to the names of the notes pressed, aside from piano roll. Like a little note name indication like "C3" on the corner of the Push screen. It would immensely help the process for me.
Salvo Daze yeah, I had to look up the diagram of how the pads are laid out because sometimes the fixed scales don't cut it. Not really any good tutorials out for this. so I'm working on one. I want to convert more people to the Push.
I don't believe I want to play it this well, but excellent demonstration of how far you can take this thing. I'm just a simple guitarist that wants access to chords without having to maintain piano chops.
My brother! That was absolutely awesome. So sick. Very R&B with a wonderful blues sound. I love it! Great video. Smooth playing, man. Diggin' it. Certainly inspirational.
I love my Push 2, but I have a really hard time using the pad layout like a normal keyboard. The layout just doesn't make sense in my brain, but I suppose practice makes perfect.
Yeah - I'm a keyboard player and the notational layout of Push does my head in - I think I'll just use a midi keyboard instead. Has it gotten easier for you ?
captainjaneway3000 A little bit. I can find keys quicker, and I find I much prefer it for percussive instruments or rhythmic stuff. It definitely has its place in my setup, but can't replace a normal keyboard.
I guess the layout makes much more sense for guitarists and bassists than for keyboard players, which makes sense too since keyboard players already have a reliable interface for sending midi messages.
Right -- I'm a guitarist and a keyboardist but I created the Chord Player to play chords on the Ableton Push more easily without learning new fingerings. It also helps those without a ton of music theory knowledge to choose chords without thinking about how to play them.
Hey everyone, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I just launched a Push tutorial series, check it out if you're looking to step your knowledge up £;^) www.patreon.com/jnthnstein
its mostly not much harder or easier.. the underlying music theory doesn't change BUT as someone who can play both guitar and a little piano and owns a launchpad pro (same 8x8 grid, aftertouch, ableton integration but much cheaper price tag, but no knobs, faders or display) you can take advantage of some benefits of both piano and guitar as the same time. mainly the guitar is more expressive and once you learned a pattern for a scale or chord you can just slide it up and down the neck to change the root, whereas on the piano you have to re-learn the patterns for each root. on a guitar you get more expressive control over the notes you're playing, but learning to play fast takes ALOT of time and effort because your hands have to sync up, you need calusses and on top of that you have to mute the strings that are not supposed to play. on piano some simple exercises will get you real fast and you have typically more octaves under your fingers. you learn patterns for a single octave and can transpose those up and down real easy. the guitar has various different patterns for playing the same notes per octave in different places all over the neck so the patterns you have to learn are much larger than a single octave. with a grid you sort of get the benefits of both instruments and you can also play drums on it. i'm developing my own software to reinforoce that, you can check my channel to see it in action
I absolutely love Chromatic mode with 4ths between each line, it's so intuitive coming from guitar. So far I've just left it in the key of Cmaj and went outside that scale as needed.
A little small minded? An instrument is and has always been an interface between the player and the sound they create. Whether that interface is acoustic or electronic is irrelevant.
So then the plug-in is the instrument? Or is it the computer? The programming? What about a hardware synth when it isn't plugged into a speaker? Or perhaps it's the entire chain, from interface to sound. Nobody claimed the Push works by itself...that's like saying a guitar stops being an instrument when it has no strings. Stop being so pedantic. Are you 12?
Yes, this is great, but there is one thing that confusing. You have a semitone offset on the third string on a real guitar and this fact ruins all my shapes=) There are some custom guitar fretboard pad layout for Launchpad, but I never heard about ones for Push.
I primarily play guitar and I get why you would want that on a Push, but IMO you become a more well-rounded musician if you learn how to operate in different tuning setups. 6 string bass is tuned in 4ths, mandolin is tuned in 5ths, all have been good for me to learn. That being said, I am a multi-instrumentalist. So the benefit is clear for me.
Can it be tuned differently? For example like a violin in fifths instead? Or an accordion in minor thirds? Or like an actual guitar, with second and third strings a major third instead or a fourth? Given it’s electronically assigned, it should be easy to programme for the makers.
Bruh every time I watch this video I wished that I would have learned to play the piano, but I can't wait to get this tool so I pretend that I know what I'm doing. Thanks
I have the colors reassigned in my Chord Player preset to help orient your fingers. You can use that method to make your own color layout. ua-cam.com/video/ip78LdnFoB4/v-deo.html
DUM...LOL just learn how to play the piano! No shortcuts! . Sure he knows how to work this piece of Hardware however it still doesn't sound very normal and natural
It's just a different instrument. No reason to talk down on it. It's actually nice to have something different from a tradtional kayboard to play stuff into the computer. And imagine touring with this vs a synth rig. Fits in your backpack ;)
and how is this a shortcut?t he is in chromatic mode wich is every note on the piano being represented. If he was in scale mode then the push would change the pads layout to only hitting specific notes of the chosen scale. scale mode may be shortcut, but he wasn't using that. You lack understanding
Speaking as a jazz pianist with a Push 2, playing the Push as an instrument seems much more intuitive for guitarists or bassists to make the transition.
That said, he got this good by practicing every day. He really put the time in and it shows.
True. It's a lot like fret-tapping on a guitar, when it's in chromatic mode.
To make the transition to what? Just curious :)
If you are a guitarist or bassist, set push to chromatic, E, and Phrygian. It’s like looking down at the fretboard. You can also drop a tuner from audio effects in after the instrument to help if you want reference to where you are
Why phyrgian? Setting the scale while in chromatic just changes the lighting of each key.
To make it really like a guitar you need to change on of the intervals to a major 3rd. Not sure you can do that on the push... yet!
Dope comment. I'm also curious why phyrgian instead of major?
E Phrygian is just C major starting on E. When you put the push 2 in E Phrygian, the lit notes will be the same but the lowest note and all the other blue keys will be E.
can this be done on the launchpad as well??
That piano sound is out of this world, what a time to be alive!
Ableton! Sign this guy to make a tutorial web series.
this dude is a massive genius ; i bought a Push 2 and that revolutionized the way i play music
@Mike S Yes and no. In some ways it's easier to make chords that you would never reach with your hands on a piano, because of the way it's laid out. it's impossible to not recognize Jnthn as one of the most interesting musicians today. sight!
This is most brilliantly explained tutorial on using the keyboard on Push 2!
wow, was watching his demo on the guitar center page. and in my head i was thinking, those are some gnarly chords progressions! but that i see how the pads are laid out like a guitar, i see how his intuition kicks in!

Ave Mcree yea. Let me know if you ever do! I wish Jnthn Stein would do a "Push chords" course. I'd definitely pay good money for that.
New push user here. I'm curious as to why fixed scales doesn't always cut it...
minor notes
?
I don't believe I want to play it this well, but excellent demonstration of how far you can take this thing. I'm just a simple guitarist that wants access to chords without having to maintain piano chops.
This is amazing. Love his music and style. Im just gunna learn this and study the voicings/ intervals of changes!
My brother! That was absolutely awesome. So sick. Very R&B with a wonderful blues sound. I love it! Great video. Smooth playing, man. Diggin' it. Certainly inspirational.
Don't be fooled. he's a great piano player and an astounding musician. definitely not as easy as it looks 😄
See now this is why its always best to see a real musician play complicated toys. Play on guy!!
this is insane. so insane. insanely great.
This here is the definition of mind blowing!
I love my Push 2, but I have a really hard time using the pad layout like a normal keyboard. The layout just doesn't make sense in my brain, but I suppose practice makes perfect.

Hey try out my Chord Player preset for the Ableton Push. Helps a ton with playing piano chords: ua-cam.com/video/ip78LdnFoB4/v-deo.html

Hes a damn musical genius! How the heck did he teach myself how to perform on that in chromatic mode? Amazing
Wish I had an inkling of what he meant, I heard what he said and it cruised by at oh, about forty-thousand feet. It really does sound great...
Hey everyone, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I just launched a Push tutorial series, check it out if you're looking to step your knowledge up £;^)

This guy is brilliant
That was amazing ❤
Nice video! What piano pack is Jnthn using?
Okay this guy is just INTENSE on that thing jesus christ
What this guy is doing is insanely hard! Don't be fooled buying a push because it looks easier than playing the piano. Because, simply, it isn't.
agreed, they always make it look so easy
yes this guy already knows how to play this on piano
I found it pretty easy to play after a few hours of practice. Much easier than learning a piano imo.
its mostly not much harder or easier.. the underlying music theory doesn't change BUT as someone who can play both guitar and a little piano and owns a launchpad pro (same 8x8 grid, aftertouch, ableton integration but much cheaper price tag, but no knobs, faders or display) you can take advantage of some benefits of both piano and guitar as the same time.

Playing this on Push is about as hard as it would be on piano. Talent + Practice = Skill
push 3 information is needed.
I absolutely love Chromatic mode with 4ths between each line, it's so intuitive coming from guitar. So far I've just left it in the key of Cmaj and went outside that scale as needed.
Which piano plugin does he use?
Hey ! Nice video !
What is the brand of your watch please ?
Akribos, they make beautiful affordable watches
Hi, is there a way to change all colors of the pads, want to use a color pallet for notes, like Red for C orange for D...
Extraordinary!
This is exactly how I see it when I'm playing!
🔥🙏🏾🔥🙏🏾🔥🙏🏾🔥 HALLELUJAH !!!!!
Is that a cloud lifter underneath? :D
This is insane though. Time to practice!
amazing
this is another lvl
Wow!!!! Amazing!!!
Yo dude you making that push sang
That was beautiful
Hey, this is the best video with push as a keyboard! Do you mind sharing what piano samples you‘re using?
stock Ableton piano
@@JNTHNSTEIN its definitely not stock. i think its one of the e-intsruments packs that u can buy from ableton.com ;)
Anyone know how adding a sustain pedal to this would work?
works great with one
Yes
Dope!
thats exactly what i need
The Push is the greatest musical instrument humans have ever created.
Les Paul just turned over in his grave at this comment.
Astrophysical Maser repeat after me: IT’S NOT AN INSTRUMENT - IT’S A MIDI CONTROLLER...
carry on...
A little small minded? An instrument is and has always been an interface between the player and the sound they create. Whether that interface is acoustic or electronic is irrelevant.
NO! An instrument can be played on it's own. Period. A midi controller is a paper weight without a daw... btw I love the push 2
That hurts my brain.. I just can't translate traditional keyboard to these grid things
Where are the black keys of piano in push ??
“which you could change......at anytime.”
I feel like it takes a *long* time to get this fluent using the push as a keyboard
outstanding

@@shink3760 you are right in many ways, but it is alwas good to have an option).
wow ...
Dam just like a piano🔥🔥🔥🔥
what is the stand you use??
I don't think it was a stand. It looks like he was resting the Push on a D.I. box to tilt it up a little.
OMG GENIUS
The Push god
he's swaying side to side like he just got off a boat that he's been on for the last 8 months
waooooooo hermoso so beautifull!! i´ll go to my push!!
omg he's the robert glasper of the push
Jonathan! Take this into a church and rock it please!
I still don't get the layout
I wish it could just be laid out like a traditional keyboard piano !!!
Try this easy way of playing piano chords on the Push: ua-cam.com/video/ip78LdnFoB4/v-deo.html

The vein on my forehead just raised…im sitting here calm af tho….
Can you change the colors of the white pads?
I have the colors reassigned in my Chord Player preset to help orient your fingers. You can use that method to make your own color layout. ua-cam.com/video/ip78LdnFoB4/v-deo.html
Was looking for my wallet as the offering starts.
I always feel bad for that little cloudlifter
Cool. Looks easier than learning piano.
ua-cam.com/video/8k1cpU_wn3A/v-deo.html Oh shit how long do you practise for that, jeez
what tha :O
he looks like if pharell williams was white.
“With enough practice... everyone can do this!” Smh. No.
DUM...LOL just learn how to play the piano! No shortcuts!
. Sure he knows how to work this piece of Hardware however it still doesn't sound very normal and natural
That's not at all the intention of the Push, though. It's more than a simplified synthesizer.
Normal is always being redefined. Abnormal & unnatural in music is kind of awesome. I'm compromising both for state of the art tech. Fuck it.
It's just a different instrument. No reason to talk down on it. It's actually nice to have something different from a tradtional kayboard to play stuff into the computer. And imagine touring with this vs a synth rig. Fits in your backpack ;)
hahah ur dumb because this can shit on a piano
and how is this a shortcut?t he is in chromatic mode wich is every note on the piano being represented. If he was in scale mode then the push would change the pads layout to only hitting specific notes of the chosen scale. scale mode may be shortcut, but he wasn't using that. You lack understanding
