I just wish they were more fun and less of "monsters sometimes partially seen through fog or at night, while human characters jabber something about the enviroment, aliens or hollow earth theories most of the time".
It _could_ be nice if not for the over-usage of CGI. If the monsters are going to be 100% CGI, then might as well make the whole movie a CGI animation like the Croods.
Call it narcissistic but I’m really glad this one got re-uploaded. I busted my hump working on the box set for Arrow, and for some reason the high point of the release was finally seeing something I worked on get covered in a MovieBob episode 🤩
You've done videos based on Godzilla, Gamera, King Kong, and numerous other tokusatsu shows... Will you be doing an 'What the Hell is Ultraman' one sometime soon? Hopefully? Hmmmm? :)
I've put it off for awhile just because... it's A LOT and there's so many ways to approach it, but I think when SHIN ULTRAMAN gets closer it MIGHT finally be time. Fingers crossed.
@@moviebobcentral Fingers firmly crossed. Ultraman’s getting a surprisingly big push lately here in the U.S. (at least bigger than usual). So, some people could probably use the info.
Ya kidding? This fire-breathing, flying-saucer turtle-Kaiju is the reason I want to be an inspiration to a new generation. The reason that I too consider myself a "Friend To All Children."
damn it i've never seen a Gamera movie in my life and don't really care about the kaiju genre outside Godzilla. So someone wanna tell me why the heck I'm crying over Gamera's death and weeping about his awe inspiring return? I'm blaming it on my hormones... That has to be it. Cause I can't really be crying over a rocket powered, spinning disc, dragon-turtle that guards the hopes and dreams of the world's children. right?
Observation I made elsewhere that gained some traction there: Gamera is the Mick Foley of kaiju. Every single movie (except the original) he takes a beating the likes of which Godzilla has rarely seen.
Bob, please please PLEASE do a review of Gamera: Rebirth. It may be a tv series rather than a movie, but Gamera deserves all the attention and praise right now, and there aren't enough content creators who are fans of Gamera.
I keep watching these things to see if I can figure out how people got past the stupid rubber suits to no avail. I guess at least Bob is good at talking about it. Bob being so good at speaking about these is the main reason I watch them.
I would say it entirely depends on whether or not you saw these movies as a kid. I have never heard about an adult getting really into movies about people in rubber suits smashing up miniature cities, and it mostly depends on whether or not you have nostalgia for such movies from your childhood.
I suspect "Gamera the Brave" was probably intended to be a start of an unrelated non-Gamera series of child targeted Kaijuu movies, considering the Japanese title means "Little Heroes: Gamera"
That piano guy singing the Gamera song raises so many questions. The most baffling is why is he playing it for Ron White's non-union stand-in and Weekend at Bernie's who stole Beakman's lab coat?
Gah-meh-ra. Not sure what the dubbing did, but I think they are trying to mimick the way the boy says Gamera when he yells, which could sound similar to that if your not used to Japanese.
11:34 This is The Amazing World of Gumball by the way. And apparently those are supposed to be cats, NOT rabbits. Took me quite a while to figure this out.
The Wattersons are a Furry "Mixed Racial" family. The boy and the mother are both cats, while the daughter and father are both rabbits. The goldfish is adopted.
come on dude it's not "deconstructing" the genre; Kaneko just went back to the dark roots of kaiju the same way Anno went back to the dark roots of mecha.
I think something more along the Guardian trilogy would go over better than the brave movie which even as a pretty big Gomera fan felt too much like a kids tv movie or the Mothra reboot movies
Maybe sometime take a step back and engage with _why_ so many people, even big old school Godzilla and Kaiju movie fans, didn't like King of the Monsters, instead of just asserting they have bad taste.

To be fair, the Transformers are pretty cool too.

Matty Frank! Matty Frank! He's the source of our new pain! ;)
Wow. You seem to work on a lot of kaiju/tokusatsu stuff.
11:38 I’m guessing this was their “Bambi’s Mom Got Shot/Optimus Prime Died/Littlefoot’s Mom Died” moment.
"For all I know, when this virus shit is done this will help you pass the bar exam."

Gamera the defender of children everywhere.

We've been eating Gamera!!!"

right?
Legendary probably should try a Gamera movie to catch children's attention.
gamera the brave really is underrated
Observation I made elsewhere that gained some traction there: Gamera is the Mick Foley of kaiju. Every single movie (except the original) he takes a beating the likes of which Godzilla has rarely seen.
Giant Monster movies are a lot like WWE events.
SO. MUCH. LOVE. I was once a child, and so Gamera is friend to me. In addition to being filled with meat.
I’m guessing Gamera is on the PTA with Kong and Rebecca Hall.
For a sec i expected a Prachett retrospective.
I for one am positively SHOCKED
The 90s Gamera Trilogy is awesome.
Mom and I started watching the MST3K Gamera collection over the Holidays.

The rubber suits are part of the appeal. It’s part of the “tokusatsu aesthetic”.

Any word on that new Gamara movie that was teases a few years back?
Goddamn I love me some Gamera, have since I was a lil kid watching kaiju films. Got a tattoo of him on me leg a few months back too, tis groovy.

No, the movie's bad dubbing did.

I would love to see a video on Ultraman
Well that was impressive.
So good!
Hey Moviebob, how about a Big Picture on the 60s British Avengers. We lost Diana Rigg last year. I’d love to see a proper sendoff.
It would certainly rate a "TV ... is ... WEIRRRD!"
I can see a Kaiju's bigger picture coming.
"The Biggest Picture"
"Gamera The Friend of all Children", SO THAT'S WHERE THE PHRASE CAME FROM

Bob been doing lot of combined re-uploads. Rather than new episodes of stuff that older. Since Covid stopped most new stuff.
These re-uploads are to put them in his channel. The original ones were at The Escapist.
Is anyone else disapointed that Bob didn't through in a clip from Shane at 8:30?

Gamera the Brave is frustrating. The monster stuff is good, but the first two thirds of the movie is nothing but boring children shenanigans.
