Well imo, if you try to say something. on don't do this or that,they start saying your controlling. And many people just don't wanna make that happen, may it be either from fear or cowardice. Many just wanna see the person they were first with but don't know how. Or maybe it can be that I don't know anything.

Especially If you get into digging up stuff with your therapist that you didn't know you had burried deep inside of you. It takes time, patience and effort.
