The STRANGEST SCHEDULING CONTROVERSY of the 1973 NFL Season | Falcons @ Jets (1973)

- Common sense... actually prevailed?
In week 11 of the 1973 NFL season, the New York Jets were set to face the Atlanta Falcons at Shea Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for 1:00 Eastern, just as every other Jets home game had always been. But then, something happened that changed everything... and the solution to the problem, especially considering what we know about the NFL on TV back in 1973, might be shocking

This is very similar to what happened 20 years later in the LA market with the LA Kings, the expansion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim & ESPN. ESPN's original plan was to air as part of a doubleheader (which featured Toronto taking on the Rangers in the first game which everyone got) the Kings taking on Vancouver. However ESPN also wanted to air the Mighty Ducks game vs the SJ Sharks because of the fact that they were the newest team in the league (along with Florida). ESPN did not trust the local RSN to air the Ducks game in the LA market & felt they could do a better job. To make sure that they could air the Ducks game while also still airing Kings-Canucks, they asked the Canucks (who were the home team) to move the start time back 3 hours from 7:30 to 4:30 & ESPN would still broadcast the game in the LA market while everyone else around the country got Toronto-NY Rangers. Then everyone regardless of market would see the Ducks take on San Jose. Remarkably the Canucks agreed to this even though it created a traffic nightmare in Vancouver as fans rushed to the game from work. It also worked out for Disneyland employees that wanted to see the Ducks play as ESPN gave them free tickets to the game. As for how things turned out on the ice, LA beat Vancouver 4-1 with a Wayne Gretzky hat trick & the Ducks thrashed San Jose 8-2.

@@ericfett9218 thanks for the correction, I wasn't sure if the Ducks had won that game when I did my research because there was no info on it.

One of your best videos i really enjoyed the game footage which ive never seen before and your explanation of what took place
13:05 you have an amazing helmet collection. 1975 Charlotte Hornets WFL!
What happened in 1973 would not occur again today but the giants and jets share the same stadium-met life and there’s no conflict- love the Joe Namath figurette !!😊😊😊
And even if down the road, the Jets got their own 50,000 seat NFL Stadium back in NYC, suburban Long Island or even another location in Suburban Northern New Jersey, the ways the NFL now schedules their games, I doubt you will have this mess as it occurred back in 1973.
@@americangiant1003 you’re right about that, mao man!!
I know I wasn’t alive, but hearing this makes me freak out. If this was today, both Falcons and Jets fans would’ve been freaking out over this.
This was crazy. It's good to know this stuff, I like channels like this learning about a sport I played and love watching. Channels like this I get to learn about events in football that were doing my time or way before my birth certificate was even made 🤣
This reminds me of when I was tasked with writing a story about the University of Maryland's preparations for Y2K (yes, it was that long ago lol).
I made the fact that the University WAS prepared the story.
That's awesome. Also, because you were the leading donor on Monday's stream and we hit the stretch goal (you left before the stream ended), what team and color/era jersey do you want me to wear for next time? Your pick

Hopefully should be here for the TNF stream in week 14!
In 1973, the Chargers were the only NFL team to have scheduling priority over an MLB team in a shared stadium. It wasn't that way in Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota, Oakland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, San Francisco and both New York venues.
Green Bay usually did not schedule home games in Milwaukee until after baseball ended, but in 1973, the Packers played the Jets at Milwaukee on MNF in September because Lambeau did not have sufficient lighting.
Why don't they still play on baseball fields with the giant mud patch in the middle of the field? That looked so cool! Imagine it in 4K.
(I know the reasons, but I'm all for adding obstacles to the field of play. Maybe a snake pit in front of each end zone? They could use rubber snakes for safety purposes, both for the players and the snakes). 🐍🐍🐍

Even with common sense prevailing, both of the NYC clubs still had their games on CBS, which could've presented a problem if the Giants/Eagles game ran long. Thank goodness for the media deals that kicked in for the 2023-24 season because FOX and CBS are paying about the same amount of rights fees now due to not being tied to conferences anymore. I'm so relieved that something such as this wouldn't happen these days.
Great point. Other than the Conference Finals almost any Regular Season and Post Season games until the Divisional Playoffs that is not on Sunday, Monday or Thursday Night game could be on either Fox or CBS in this new current deal that started with the ‘22/‘23 season.
For instance with the 2023 Thanksgiving Holiday Classic game, 2 NFC teams the Cowboys/Commanders was on CBS. While in the playoffs at least a couple of times, an all AFC battle will air on Fox. Other than streaming, this existing NFL TV package here in ‘23/‘24 is the best ever IMO since if the Viewer/Fan can pay up to several hundred dollars, every Regular Season and Post Season is now available on Television/Streaming via Phone, Tablet or laptop.
That risk was fairly low because there was no overtime until 1974, and games rarely went over 3 hours. The “Heidi Bowl” was a major exception.
Yup, the Jets were really 2nd class tenants at Shea 🏟. They also had to play their first five games on the road in 1969 when the Mets made their World Series run (they were not allowed to play a home game until the Mets were done with their season; so essentially they played no September home games at Shea. Plus they didn't get as big a share of GameDay money).
Edit: I was doing some research about the Jets tenure at Shea and yes, they did have to have several games on the road to start out their season. This came to a head in 1977 when the team announced they would play two September home games a year at Giants Stadium (they did play one September home game at Giants stadium), which lead to litigation between the Jets and New York City. In the settlement, the city allowed the Jets to play two September home games at Shea during the remainder of the Jets' lease (78-83).
In spite of this, the Jets wanted to remain at Shea Stadium even after their lease expired in 1983. Leon Hess negotiated with the city about expanding the capacity of Shea and changing terms of the lease (the Jets got no money from parking) to which Ed Koch said no.
I know it’s ancient history going back over 5 decades. I think if NYC was more creative, the old Polo Grounds in Harlem could be torn down and replaced with a new NFL centric Stadium specifically for the Jets and maybe the Giants . While the Shea/current Citifield Site could be the exclusive home for the Mets. Just a thought as NYC could have followed what Kansas City did for the Royals and Chiefs with separate ballpark in the early 70s.
Trump seriously considered moving the Generals from New Jersey to Shea if the USFL fall season came to pass in 1986.
I remember this Falcons-Jets game. In fact, I remember wondering why they were playing at 4 p.m. Now I know. My childhood is full of memories of watching crappy Jets and Giants teams. The Jets' last home game that season was a great one, though -- OJ broke the single-season rushing yards record in the first quarter and broke 2,000 in the fourth. BTW, the Falcons lost two of their last three and missed the playoffs, not making it until 1978, when they beat the Miracle at the Meadowlands Eagles 14-13 thanks to Dick Vermeil not signing a kicker and having the punter do double duty (his missed XP and FG decided the game).
The unanswered question is, how long before that day did they announce the time change. It'd make a big difference if it was announced week 3 VS a week before the game
4 would also be the channel number that the Jets would not be on, as that is the NBC affiliate in NYC.
Also, question... what did NBC end up showing in NYC that day?

@@OfficialJaguarGator9 Thanks much for the info.
This game was listed on the Jets’ schedule as a 4 pm start at least as early as September 16, the opening day of the 1973 season, and just 2 days after President Nixon signed the bill mandating the lifting of home-market blackouts for sold-out games. And I think it was always going to be a 4 pm game, for one simple reason: CBS had the doubleheader that week, and there was no other CBS game even tentatively slotted at 4 pm. The only other 4 pm games that day were on NBC-Kansas City at Denver, and San Diego at Oakland. The only real question was whether Falcons-Jets would be televised in NY. Under NFL rules, a market where a team was playing at home generally couldn’t have a network doubleheader-and Giants at Eagles *had* to be televised in NY because it was a road game. But the NFL gave a special exemption that allowed the first New York-New York doubleheader on the same network in history. Ironically, the Jets’ other 2 home games after this-at 1 pm against the Colts and Bills-were *not* televised in NY, despite being sellouts. NBC had rights to both games, but instead opted for more meaningful 4 pm games-Browns-Chiefs and Broncos-Raiders-while also conveniently avoiding going head-to-head with 1 pm Giants’ games on CBS. This was despite the fact that OJ Simpson broke Jim Brown’s season rushing record and the 2,000 yard barrier in the Bills’ win over the Jets.
Initially I though this was going to be a conflict with the Mets as ‘73 was the season they got into the WS but then I realized that all of the postseason games were played during the week (Mon-Wed NLCS, Tues-Thur WS).
The Colts HAD to start their games at or after 2 as they were one of the "blue law" states.
The Falcons/Jets game must have been CBS’ marquee game that Sunday following Thanksgiving in 1973 because Pat Summerall called the game but he was an analyst at the time he was CBS’ #1 analyst. The play by play announcer for the Falcons/Jets game was Jack Whitaker. He wasn’t the #1 NFL play by play announcer for CBS at that time. Ray Scott was. Ray Scott had worked the Thanksgiving game between the Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions with Pat Summerall. Earlier that day before the Falcons/Jets game, Scott worked the Bears/Vikings game with Tom Brookshier who was then CBS’ # 2 NFL analyst.
This came up again the final week of the 1978 season when the Giants were on the road against the Eagles at Veterans Stadium (the rematch from "The Miracle at The Meadowlands" a month earlier) that put the Eagles in the playoffs for the first time since winning the NFL Championship in 1960 (excluding a Playoff Bowl appearance following the 1966 season where they lost to the Colts in what essentially was a third-pace game) while the Jets were at Shea hosting the Cowboys with both games at 1:00 PM Eastern. Unlike the 1973 situation shown here, the NFL DID NOT do a similar action, likely in my opinion due to complaints from other teams concerning that at the time. Those kind of conflicts would end with the 1979 season in New York when for many years after, unless one of the Jets or Giants were playing on Monday Night Football (and later Sunday night football or a then-"special" Thursday or Sunday edition of MNF before ESPN launched SNF in 1987), one of the Jets or Giants would be scheduled for 1:00 PM ET and the other would be scheduled for 4:00 PM ET, with one or the other usually playing the 4:00 PM game under the lights later that season to assure that New York actually got a late game every week (there were a couple of instances in the 1978 season where the Jets and Giants both played at 1:00 PM and New York didn't get any game at 4:00 and also included an instance because the Yankees were playing in the World Series against the Dodgers in a game scheduled to start at 4:15 PM or so eastern time, a Jets-Colts game in Baltimore that was scheduled for 2:00 PM ET actually aired on WPIX-TV (Channel 11) which then had Jets preseason games instead of WNBC-TV (Channel 4) where it normally would have been televised, beginning with 1979, when the Jets played the Colts in Baltimore it was ALWAYS a 4:00 PM ET game).
The 49ers game JG9 refers to here in 1981 was blacked out in SF that conflicted with the Raiders happened due to the fact up to that point, for several years the 49ers had failed to sell out any home games for the most part so it was assumed that would be the case with that game until the 49ers got to a hot start they didn't fade from unlike a year earlier in 1980 when they started 3-0, then lost 10 straight and then won their final three to finish 6-10.
Per the post in the 506 Forums, CBS had the DH that Sunday and Falcons-Jets was the only late game
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about the broadcasting controversy in Kansas City later that year. In that video you said home markets didn’t get both ends of a doubleheader on the same network. So how were fans in New York able to see both games?
That's a great question. From everything I could find, this seemed like an exception to the rule, where the "home team has to be shown" rule takes precedent over the doubleheader rule. I'm a bit surprised NBC didn't throw a fit over this (at least not publicly) since no one in New York would likely be watching any of their games due to competition with the Giants and Jets
After that game the Falcons were 8-3 and looked almost sure to make the playoffs for the first time in their history. They'd even beaten the 9-0 Vikings. Then they blew it by losing their next two while giving up a whopping 482 combined rushing yards, which was especially harmful at that time. 1970-77 wasn't called the Dead Ball Era for nothing.
Falcons @ Jets 2024 regular season, who wins? Seems a lot better than this game here
I remember this game on TV. Shea Stadium mud fest.
