Moral of the story - The RIA really isn't cheap or a budget gun, it seems to be priced just right for what it does. A lot of other "Budget" shotguns perform just as well. Sucky magazines seem to be the most common problems, but not necessarily the actual gun components.
And for those truly cheap guns that are mechanically crappy (either via design flaws or poor manufacturing/materials), their reputations seem to spread quickly enough thanks to UA-cam and other forums that people will hopefully avoid them.
So, considering its pretty well established performance, I don't consider the RIA a "Budget" or "Bargain" shotgun, I use it as a base as to what a functional AR style shotgun SHOULD cost.
Thus, I suspect that the considerably more expensive options, with almost identical performance, are often just way overpriced. Or, like any other product, perhaps bagging a premium price based solely on their name/brand/reputation of their other products. Eventually, you pass a point where you're paying for actual quality, and then you're just paying a lot of extra money for a logo. That's just my humble opinion after 35yrs of shooting though.
    Either way, good video.

I do think RIA has cut some corners on some of their firearms and released them too early knowing it has design flaws such as their Bullpup. A lot of jamming issues.I do like my VR60 and you just have break it in. I think the VR80 barrel is too damn heavy, especially if you have to walk far in the woods on a hunt. I also hear from gunsmiths that they are a pain to fix as well.

Yes and no. From an engineering standpoint if there are cast parts in your gun then there would be a chance of breaking after excessive use. Excessive force and heat in weaker parts of the metal can get micro fractures that can get worse over time until breaking. I do not like cast parts in my guns, I replace them with machined steel when I can.
My Sig P320 had a cast trigger, and I didn't know until a piece of it literally broke off at the range under normal firing conditions. Gun had less than 100 rounds in it. Bought a flat faced trigger, then after they sent it back from the recall it had a different OEM trigger in it which I now like the most.

I have a VR60 and love it. When you first buy it, it has a break-in process using heavy long brass shells to break in the spring which is a heavy spring and requires it to be softened with this break-in period OR you can leave the bolt locked back compressing the spring for a few weeks and softened the spring up that way. The VR60 also has different load type pistons to use depending on which ammo you use from heavy to light. Once you do the break-in process and know your gun on how to run it with the different ammo pistons, this shotgun is awesome and runs flawlessly, I have had no issues with it. It also comes with 3 different barrel chokes, cylinder, modified and full choke. It also has rails on it for excessories, I installed a tactical flashlight and handle on bottom, a sling and thats it. I would recommend this shotgun to anyone for use with home defense, target practices and even hunting. It's a nice shotgun.

What exactly will the more expensive gun do, this one didn't? Cost more? I mean this one cycled fine all except the one misfeed. And does it really matter that the charging handle didn't always lock back? That could be due to the casings or that it hasn't been broken in yet. Most of these cheap Turkish shotguns are just clones of other, more established systems. So, in theory, they should be mostly fine, but Rock Island Armory isn't going to have the same quality control that Izhmash or whoever will have making the real deal.
When you look into threads on these, you'll see some guys saying that theirs have never misfed and they have like a trillion rounds through them and they run like a sewing machine. Then you'll see a bunch of other guys who will say they can't get through a full magazine, immediate parts failures, bad customer service etc.
If you buy a $1,500 M4, you're getting a good gun that you know is going to work out of the box. With these cheap guns, however, it's a gamble. You could get something that works awesome, or you could get a lemon so bad you might as well have set $600 on fire.
On top of that, a lot of these guns are out-of-spec to what they're cloning, so you may or may not be able to use high quality aftermarket parts if something breaks or needs improvement.
You're also lacking refinement. Go to your local gun shop and handle one of these. Try holding the gun and dry firing it. You'll notice quickly that they have a not-great trigger, and the furniture feels toy quality.
Now, I know a lot of people run these sorts of things in open division 3 gun and have a lot of luck. I'm not knocking them. They are cool guns and they can be really useful, but you get what you pay for.

I bought mine years ago around the time they first came out for less than $350 brand new. Now I'm seeing them for 8 to $900 and the msrp really hasn't changed much if you look them up. I love mine and haven't had any issues. Only issue I've had is with the 19 round mags, they seem to have a catch about half way so the round does make it to the top fast enough. But, take the bottom half off and make it a 9 round and it works perfect. I'm a big Rock Island fan. I own several of their 1911's from 22 mag to 45, and I also have the M5 pump 12 gauge. People consider them budget, but honestly they're extremely reliable and are made with good parts. I've not had an issue out of any of my Rock Island gun's, not even the 22 mag which I read horrible reviews about. In my opinion why pay an excessive amount of money for a gun (or anything for that matter) when you can get something just as good and sturdy for less.

Lol! Its cheap for what it is! I dont mean that in a negative way. Semi auto shotguns are rarely this inexpensive

@@1ShotTV I got ya. Very true. I have been impressed with mine so far. I’ve ran some of those double slugs, and the rocket looking slugs from War Wolf out of it. Works great.
Of course cheap low brass shells won’t work in it.

The lynx 12 is an Uprgraded Saiga Clone by SDS inports, and it may not be russian but since its Chinese you still get that authentic commie feel.
I usually see them between 479.99 and 499.99.

Mine would not run cheap shells.i cleaned it well and locked the bolt open let it sit in the safe a year ago. Pulled it out and it runs everything now. Keeping the bolt spring compressed really helped it. The manufacturer says 5oo rounds of heavy loads will do the same thing.

I ended up buying the Citadel Boss 25 12 gauge, and it was $499, mine seems to cycle birdshot better than buckshot and slugs so far. Need to finish breaking it in, and put more rounds through it. I was happy with the citadel though, quite a bit lighter than the Rock Island. Mine seems to have the same issue outrunning the magazine on high power loads

I have the Leader Arms AR-12. I've heard a lot of bad things about it, especially when running 2 3/4" shells. When I bought mine, 2 3/4", 00 buck was all they had in 12 gauge so, that's all I've run through it. I've run nearly 1000 rounds with no issues.

seems to be a solid gun... maybe cheap magazines are the main issue. and honestly, there's prolly only cheap mags made for it.

I have one of these, and it has been very good with several different types of ammo, I’m never firing lower than double 00 Buck. But it has fired everything very well, including black magic magnums. It’s well worth the money I paid for it.

Glad to see a lefty shooting this, I found out the hard way that not all shells eject away from a lefty’s face or neck.

Paid $300 for a Leader Arms Tech AR12 a few years ago. Made in Turkey. Surprised the heck out of me, Runs flawlessly with whatever I put in it. Really amazingly dependable whenever I do take it out.

I have the RTA Vr80 and it comes with 2 gas rings one is for low brass and the other is for high brass. It also comes with 3 barrel chocks

  • @user-qp3eb4pm1zfatcatreloading

I run a couple of those guns. Factory loads and my custom hand loads. You have to keep them lubed well. I use Vaseline on the o ring and the run ammo very well no matter if it’s high power or low power ammo. I ordered a rifled choke tube and shoot steel core socket slugs threw them loaded to max load data. The factory chokes actually do well with shot. I was impressed at the patterns threw the shorter barrel. I figured I use them to hunt with.

This is perfect, I bought a vr,60 bout 6 months ago. Was wanting the vr80 they didn't have it . So I got the vr,60. Let's just say I wasn't happy and have only put maybe 20 rounds through it. 5 rounds to a mag but after one or two shots. It would jam . Either from the shell hanging up when ejecting an half the shell out the receiver or get jam when the next round was coming up at a angle. I dont know enough or comfortable enough at this time taking it apart an no one around me will work on it. I called rock inland armory an they wouldn't let me send it to them to check out either. I'll watch this to the end an may leave another comment. Thanks

I have one. I use only high brass 1200fps 00 or 000 Buck, I bought mine at Rural King for $425. i have never had a problem with any rounds feeding...it is set up in my house for a burglar and at ten yards there will not be much left of him for the police to scrap up.

  • @polywog9591

I think these come with a gas ring. 1 for regular loads and 1 for heavy loads. You used the same ring for both loads, probably contributing to the rapid bolt travel over-ride. Also manufacturer recomnends 50 rounds break-in, for feeds.
