To me, one of the scariest things about Nate is how his worst traits are twisted versions of good traits. Being smart and strategic becomes manipulation. Drive becomes ruthlessness. Strength and protectiveness become domination. So if we praise someone's apparently good traits, how do we know that we're not encouraging something twisted?

those are just personality traits, i think to know if someone is a truly good person is if you evaluate their character and inherent values and morality -- for example like you said someone can be intelligent but could use that intelligence for good or for bad, if bad then their character is poor and it shows thru in a basic personality trait, it can manifest differently depending. superficial personality traits can be easily bent, character not so much.

Exactly like another person said, good traits are not necessarily indicators of a good person. Just a person who understands what people may value. Question why you value these things truly and you can choose better people who are in your life.

That's why he likes the most hyper-feminine characters in the show. He doesn't really love most -If any- of them, he loves that they're the opposite of masculinity.

i hate the writing in season 2 but this is such a good explanation for his relationship with cassie. according to rues narration in that whole imaginative scenario of a family with cassie, rue said cassie wouldve been a better partner for him compared to maddy. its because maddy is more assertive to nates bullshit while cassie has zero self-esteem who is obsessed with love. idk about masculinity and femininity but i think nates problem is that he feels the need to always dominate. cassie gives him that satisfaction.

Some people have a subtype of OCD that is called Sexual Orientation OCD, where the person is basically consumed by intrusive thoughts and an obsession surrounding their sexual orientation.
A lot of people suspect that Nate might actually be gay, but I think that there is a good chance that he is just obsessed with his sexual orientation and doubting his sexuality. He displays a lot of other signs of OCD in general, his rigid way of thinking and controlling nature for example. The tantrum that he had with his father in the first season terrified me and made me cry when I watched it for the first time because I experienced similar OCD related tantrums when I was a child, and if I am too overwhelmed even to this day I still experience compulsions to bang my head against a wall, hit myself etc. I don’t believe that him being ashamed of being gay or bi is the motivation for a lot of his behavior like others suspect, I think that he is entirely motivated by sexual trauma that occurred while discovering his father’s sex tapes and mental illness (likely OCD imo)

It doesn't change the fact that he's psychotic, literally, but just because someone says he has a mental illness (Which psychosis is), doesn't mean they're defending them. Most of us have some idea of what we can and can't do to moderate our disorders, but some people don't try at all and just let them run rampant like Nate does, and that's not okay, but he's not being psychotic on purpose, he's just choosing to not deal with it because Cal didn't believe in therapy, and now Nate as a grown ass man won't admit he should probably just go to fucking therapy.

My take on him: he’s super tall and tall people can make you feel intimidated just by standing next to them.
He’s quiet, quiet means mystery, instinctively you feel “who knows what he’s thinking” and that adds to his alluring mysterious persona.
Also, the way he stares at you with those “kind looking eyes” but inside there is a sociopath waiting to snap. That’s the scary thing about him physically, what you can see with your naked eye. Of course there are other factors, such as how he talks (very deep, almost siren like voice, except when he’s angry), how he makes you feel inside when he’s next to a character and you don’t know his next move, the way his mind works (incredible mind by the way). He is always 3 steps ahead of everyone, looks terrifying yet so attractive to females and men as well.
I would describe him as a wolf in human form..

Nate Jacobs freaks me the fuck out and this video fucking summarized it perfectly. I've never hated a dude as much as him but simultaneously been so perplexed. His mere presence on the screen makes me uneasy. And what's amazing is, they writers find a new and creative way to make him even more unbelievably villainous each time. The most recent episode involving him trying to obtain that CD and what he did to get it was unreal. His intelligence is perhaps what scares me most, he can get away with almost anything because he's brilliant on top of having so much institutional power.

He’s a hurt person, he’s experiencing age regression, but it’s not really framed like you’re supposed to sympathize with him. To me, Nate is so terrifying because he’s so unpredictable. It may sound generic to say, but I genuinely have no clue what he’s thinking or feeling and have no clue how he’ll react to a given situation, amping up the fear factor of it.
In a single scene, he go through a cycle of so many emotions. Take the scene where he holds a gun to Maddy. He starts off indifferent and casual, almost mockingly self-aware of the terror and trauma he’s inflicting. As the scene goes on, his more aggressive and purely rage-filled side takes over him, particularly when he gets on top of Maddy. We see him using physical dominance (literally on top of someone or beneath them) as an indication of him asserting his masculinity several times throughout the show, completely influenced by the sec tapes of his dad. Even the way he drags his mouth down Maddy’s body as he gets off her is a kind of sexually abusive gesture. And then he kind of looks like a frightened child, and his apology to her truly seems sincere - like he genuinely can’t believe he’s capable of doing that to another person. It made me believe, even if only for a split second, that he was truly remorseful - or at least convinced me he has a lot of self-loathing and actually fantasizes about being the sweet “Tyler” he presented to Jules - before that sociopathic indifference once again takes over him.
This, of course, is almost entirely due to Jacob’s acting. But we see him undergo these various emotional states that make it hard to pinpoint how we feel about him, and how he’ll react. He feels _human_ to put it simply. His extreme, almost childlike vulnerability after choking Maddy, which surely became manipulation in retrospect but felt sincere in the moment. Maybe he did feel vulnerable at the time, or maybe he was manipulating her the whole way through, I truly don’t have a clue. I thought he’d go apeshit on Fez after he beat him up, given how he reacted to Tyler - but he doesn’t. I thought he’d never reveal his knowledge about the tapes to his dad, but he does. He’s always in such extreme emotional dispositions, it’s hard to really understand his motivations for doing anything. That’s what makes him so fascinating/terrifying, in my opinion.

I think that is why the show designed Nate this way. The most toxic relationship, once the person is pulled in and brainwashed.. it feels like the highest high and then the lowest low and then back to the highest high again. The abuser became this way over time, getting smarter with how to get their way by being hyper observant and “3 steps ahead”, but by also inherently overtime learning better and better how to manipulate with everything they have to make the situation as appealing as possible. They also have no emotions so they don’t really feel close to anyone and that results in them being able to tune out during anything intimate, if anything that’s where they channel their inner rage or hurt or pain. Like Nate did with Cassie in the latest episode. Like another comment here stated: Nate is a wolf.

    @probablyalive.2665 2 роки тому +57

As amazing as the show is, it is NOT one of the greatest tv-series of all time. Yes, it can easily be called one of the greatest teen dramas of all time. But especially with season 2, it has cemented my belief that as beautiful and superior to other shows it is on a technical level (the unique direction, the amazing soundtrack and musical score, the top-notch performances, the aesthetics, the cinematography etc.), it has plenty of shortcomings and yes, the cracks were always there, but at least in season 1 you could almost ignore them. Now, they are more present than ever.
In my opinion, the biggest issue with Euphoria comes with certain character arcs. Even ignoring the fact that it is clearer than ever that it does not know what to do with selected characters, there are some serious narrative issues. They keep introducing more conflicts and more traumas every episode, as if they don't trust me as a viewer to come back to the show if they don't. Moreover, these conflicts either don't get resolved, or when they do they are not resolved in a way that feels satisfactory or offers closure. And not in the way "Oh it's real life there is not supposed to be closure". No, more like the writers didn't have a better idea as to how to end it.
I think another thing I take issue with is how they keep making their characters go through hell, and they show the negative effects that their circumstances are having on them, but don't really try to DIRECTLY ADDRESS the very serious mental illnesses that they are struggling with. Sure, we get their back stories and we can think - "Oh, so that's why they are like this", but beyond that the mental ramifications of those backstories are never resolved. No, shoving Sydney Sweeney's boobs in my face is not gonna make me forget the fact that you have not addressed just how traumatized she is, in a PRODUCTIVE way (sure they show us how traumatized she is, but it's never done in a way that feels like it's getting anywhere, cause it often only serves the purpose of getting her naked or crying or screaming for drama).
In both seasons, Rue's is the only arc that I can just feel that they know what they are doing. In Season 1, I felt the same way for Jules, but much like some other characters, it's pretty clear they don't know what to do with her in season 2. There are entire episodes where her story does not move forward at all.
I will say, in season 1, these problems were present to a VERY SMALL DEGREE. I mean season 1 could literally be a miniseries, that's how complete it is. The narrative is cohesive to the point where I have almost no complaints from season 1 at all.
I am adding a link to an article by the Swaddle which expresses with clarity just what the issues are in season 2: theswaddle.com/euphoria-is-the-wokest-show-to-fail-the-bechdel-test/
I think that this could have been one of the greatest shows of all time if it didn't get a season 2.
P.S - Nate's arc, even in Season 2, is the most engaging. I feel much like in Rue's case, they have a pretty good idea what they are doing with him.
Also, while I completely respect the opinion of others, "Succession" is the best show on TV. And I know it doesn't sound like it, but I really am a big fan of Euphoria. Despite my issues with it, I do feel that the things it does well, it does REALLY well. But it certainly isn't the BEST show on TV. ONE of the bests? Maybe. But Succession will always top that list. That show gains it's upper hand by MANY factors, although that's another conversation altogether. Succession is prestige TV at it's best. The social commentary, deep character building, addressing issues of abuse, power, trauma, generational trauma, sexism, capitalism and A LOT MORE- everything is done in a way that serves a narrative purpose while saying what it has to say in a way that isn't just there for shock value. Pardon me, I think I just went on a rant. Sry :P (Just wanna make it clear, I don't have an issue if someone else thinks otherwise).

I love your whole take on the show, it pretty much sums up how I've felt about season two when I started noticing it go downhill. The clearest way that I could tell that it was going downhill was with the character Kat. She completely was shifted to a side character with barely any lines and at that no real substantial lines that meant anything for her story or Euphoria. And come to find out that it was all because of her personal falling out with the writer Sam Levinson, which is utterly unprofessional. Like its truly embarrassing. I've found myself with countless scenes getting so confused and it never being brought up again making no sense of why it was even in there in the first place. I'm honestly shocked to find out that there will be a third season after all of this. I'm hoping that in 2024 when the new season comes out that Sam Levinson will hire more writers and be more professional because a lot of people have it out for him now because of season two. Alas the show still has potential to turn around.

I agree, it is not the greatest. But this is actually based on the director Sam Levinson's life and includes some real life situations. So it is being narrated as it truly was in his life. Perhaps it's about people around him and his own life, definitely tweaked up a bit but nonetheless the same topic. You cannot really critique something too much that is about real life. Ok I like the show but the way you explore the way it portrays “ White privilege “ is a racist and low resolution portrayal you just agree with it and as someone who has worked in a lot of different environments I’d say there are a lot of Nate like people of all colors you don’t need to be white to be a SOB like Nate and being white dose not make Nate any worse then he already is he is just a vile terrible human being

I think that Nate hates being vulnerable and that's why he's like this. The reason he had an intense breakdown when his father pinned him down was because he didn't win in that situation and was left in a vulnerable place so he was extremely mad at himself. His dad's words of "never left your guard down" are constantly being replayed in his head and have become his own words. He tries to control everything because he doesn't want to be left in a situation where he's vulnerable. This is one of the only ways I relate to Nate Jacobs.

Nate is a great character. Not likeable, by any means, but well written and well acted. I'm glad they didn't make him just a one dimensional villain. His behavior is abhorrent, but all too human. He has a certain self awareness, yet his entire motivation is concealed from him. He is strategic and calculating, yet completely driven by erratic anger and fear. Everything he does is a disproportionate defense against some imagined threat. When he had his meltdown on the floor after being pinned by his dad, it was so sad and scary at the same time. I saw the rage and pain of a very hurt little boy, in a big strong body capable of delivering extreme wrath. Like how a wounded animal can be dangerous because it will lash out to protect itself from more pain. I can imagine how a kid's view on the world and the people in it would be damaged by having a dad like Cal. Your parents are the first people you learn to trust, and Cal is far from trustworthy. How dark everything would seem. There were moments when I genuinely felt sad for him being so fucked up immediately followed by moments when I was begging to see him get what he deserved.

I was watching a trans woman’s (KatBlaq) reaction to the first season and she said that Nate’s probably sexually attracted to dick but not sexually attracted to men. Which to me add a layers of complexity that makes so much sense, due to our/mainstream more binary understanding of sexuality and gender Nate is often read as gay/ Nate is confused with his sexuality (especially since he shuts down Maddy when she says sexuality is fluid).

This video is incredible, you covered this so well!! I've dated seone that almost exactly mirrors nate. It's wild because before I got with my ex I knew people out there were like this but I never knew exactly how scary these people are.
When the abuse started, I started to ask Google a lot questions. Google had an answer to every one of them because this isn't uncommon. There were hundreds and hundreds of woman asking the same thing I was, stuck in the same situation I was. As I started to read about these abusers it was like reading about my ex, as if they examined him and wrote books about it. I then realized that men like this were almost identical to one another.
What they did in this show was perfectly display what these abusers act like, their upbringings, why they are the way they are, why woman end up staying and more. I actually have to really make sure I'm in a good place before I watch the show because it's like watching exactly my life when I was with him.
I look at nate, I see my ex and all the other abusers I've known. They manipulate and gaslight to point where you don't know what about them is real anymore. They drive you insane. They are good at it too because they have most likely been doing it their whole lives.
All I can say is, don't ignore red flags! You could end up in a situation like this or worse because of it.

I knew a guy in school who looked like Nate and was like him in some ways.
He was good at sports, very good at studies and got good grades cuz he wanted to impress his rich parents and make a future for himself and he was an ass sometimes to people and his classmates but I knew deep down below all his confidence and bravado was a vulnerable boy and we kind of always ruffled each others feathers but then slowly we started getting used to each other and we even had good conversations and did some creative stuff...I ended up falling for him but I knew it would be a disaster and heartbreak for us both cuz we were too volatile sometimes so we ended up splitting after school and never remained in contact...its been 5 years since I last saw him.
I will always carry a piece of that personality and his energy with me though cuz it was too intense..I guess this is why maddy was so obsessed with Nate.
People like Nate are like drugs. They hook you on with intense emotions but are fatal to your mental health.

I don’t agree that McKay has *none* of the resources Nate has. Yes he’s a black man in the US so there’s definitely certain privileges he doesn’t have that Nate does. That being said, the party in S1E1 was at McKay’s. Clearly his family has money (look at his house vs Rue’s for example or even Cassie, Kat, or Maddie). His little brothers bankroll Kat’s shopping spree after her video is leaked. So he’s definitely doing better materially than some other characters on the show. Plus I’m confident enough to say his family is less dysfunctional than Nate’s.
