  • For the past several years we have been conducting a research project in the rainforests of Belize. Using trail cameras, our students and trip participants have been looking for evidence of the big cats of Belize. Here is what we have found.

Jaguarundis are not a big cat species they are a small cat species. For a cat species to be classified as a big cat they have to have a floating hyoid bone which is what allows them to roar. Small cat species have an attached hyoid bone which allows them to purr and meow..which is why cheetahs are technically small cats. Even though people will argue that cheetahs are big cats

You are correct Luke, we were not really aiming for a classification, but just calling them "big" as by size. We are hoping to update this video again soon and will make that correction. Thanks!

Also, cougars (officially small cats) are bigger than leopards (officially big cats).

I came across one of these cats on a motorcycle ride in Barton Creek, Belize. It was crossing the jungle road about 100 ft in front of me. No lie my hair on my arms was standing on end. It was low to the ground and creeping along. Then gone. I was scared Sh#&less for a moment. It was great. I feel honored.

Really cool to see such a density of diverse wildlife in one small area! I had the pleasure of visiting Belize a few years ago and came upon some motion cameras in Bokawina national park, I wonder what they captured? Thanks for sharing your research.

I imagine that what they recorded is very close to what we did - check out this video ua-cam.com/video/8jYmnTvFGtA/v-deo.html . We also post on our Instagram site!

what's the best way too reach out to you? I'm headed to Belize next month and want to spend some time photographing and learning about the animals and especially jaguars in the jungle.

@3:39 not a gibnut but an agouti, the diurnal cousin of the lowland paca, aka gibnut, which is mostly nocturnal.

Could you tell from your research if a puma or jaguar is the apex predator there ? Because the north/central american jaguar is way smaller than the south American subspecies. North arizona/mexico 50kg - pantanal/brazil jaguars 160kg

That is an excellent question, and we are going to have to ask the experts at the Belize Zoo for an answer (we will get back to you!)

How do interactions between pumas and Jaguars usually go?

It is our understanding that they are very rare, even though they exist in the same regions of Belize

to be honest, we just rely on local guides to replace the batteries every few months. But, we are thinking of moving to solar cameras. What do you think?

Thank you! Since you are in Belize it may be easiest if you reached out to one of our partners, such as the Belize Zoo and Belize Raptor Center, to do some volunteer work - they are always interested. Feel free to contact us though if you need more help from us!
