- Seabiscuit (May 23, 1933 -- May 17, 1947) was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse in the United States. A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression. Seabiscuit was the subject of a 1949 film, The Story of Seabiscuit; a 2001 book, Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand; and a 2003 film, Seabiscuit, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Seabiscuit, a broken soul, found 3 broken men, and a broken country, and gave everyone the gift of something worth remembering, even if only for a short while. Im glad the story lives on.
After breaking his leg Seabiscuit came back to carry a record amount of weight and still set a track record. All heart and talent.
Seabiscuit did not break his leg, he ruptured his suspensory ligament.
Bad injury but not a linear or displaced fracture.
Which back in the 30's was an inoperable injury and certain demise.
He DIDN'T break his leg, he ruptured ligaments, (I gotta' say) IDIOT!
Some horse enthusiast once said. "War Admiral was the country's horse, Seabiscuit was the people's horse & Secretariat was Gods horse".
That sounds about right!

Fast forward to today and Kadena will make everyone forget Seabiscuit, War Admiral and Secretariat. The world will bow to thee immortal Kadena. We'll be telling our grandkids about Kadena.

Red Pollard is a legend. A man that had to fight to fit in and faded away with no fame.. We need a statue to celebrate the "fight" Red Pollard had in his soul. A man that was to tall to be jockey to hurt to never ride again but yet found the strength to heal himself and a horse named Seabiscuit.

When I was a small boy maybe eleven years old my father took my sister and I to looked at a pony for us to raise and ride. My father took about all the money he had in savings and bought that pony. At the time my father told us that we had bought the granddaughter of Seabiscuit. After growing a few years older and could understand my father showed us the prodigy papers and there it was in print sure enough she was grand daughter. She carried alot of Seabiscuit traits . She was a short horse ,4 black feet and surprisingly fast. What a childhood memory.

I so agree with that statement. I was watching a youtube short recently and I don’t remember the subject, just that I caught sight of a beautiful horse running free, his mane and tail flying, and the thought crossed my mind that the horse is the most beautiful mammal on the earth.
Lil fact: most famous race horses are related in some way. Seabiscuit and Secretariat where basically cousins. And seabiscuit’s uncle was war admiral, and his grandpa was man o war. American pharaoh great-great-great grandfather was secretariat. I love horse history
Thank you for this info. I've owned horses most of my adult life mostly for showing, but am very interested in Thoroughbred racing. I didn't know that he was related to Secretariat who is my choice in race horses.

Every single thoroughbred is descended from either one of 3 horses. The Byerly Turk, The Darley Arabian and The Godolphin Barb or one of 43 mares that were brought to England in the late 1500’s and early 1600’s.
Another little tidbit…when they were planning the match there was talk of Man o War being brought to Pimlico to “preside”….
Seabiscuit’s story is just so inspirational. I think we all feel like underdogs or looked over at some point in our lives, and that’s why this story grips us. We root for the underdog because we remember or know what it feels like to believe the world is against you. Seabiscuit inspires.
People should be remembered - and so should horses too - God bless , Miss Laura Hillenbrand for keeping , Seabiscuit and his family alive ❤
Red should have got a publisher and wrote a book about his life... seemed to be an amazing story itself riding with one eye and all busted up like that. A fighter just as much as Biscuit.

Funny, I was watching a number of shows of the world's greatest athletes when I saw this documentary on Seabiscuit. I thought it was a dramatization of Secretariat. Fantastic to know that this was a true story. Loved the movie.

Ive watched that movie 21 times now and every single time I cry my eyes out at the end. Such an incredible heart warming story. It always makes me want to go out and live life more authentically.

I can say with my heart, READ Laura's book, and when you get to the end, put the movie in, and watch it. This isn't a story about a horse, this is a story about America.
I'm still sorry I couldn't convince my book club of years ago to read the book. I tried to explain it was about a lot more than horse racing...a good book is a good book, regardless of what it is about.
The film is really really good. But the book adds fascinating details of the times

One of my favourite stories of all time. What a horse. What a life.
What makes horses run mindblowingly fast they are legends are 5 things: good legs, a literraly big heart, a good pedigree, stamina and a whole lot of LOVE.
Wow! in the match race sequence, you can see Seabiscuit running like its just another race. But when war admiral comes up alongside, his ears come up, he stretches out, and FLiES! That was one horse who lived to race!
I swear horse racing is the coolest and saddest thing ever. The highs are super high but the lows are super sad.
It is amazing that this beautiful animal inspired and gave hope to an entire Nation when there was such Despair during the depression. I wish we had something Today that could help to heal the spirits of Everyone in the World.

He had a look of true confidence.
Seabiscuit might have known he was beat up. Tired. Misunderstood. He might have even seen Tom Smith and understood what he was.
The colt ran 20 4/5 seconds for 2 furlongs as a yearling.
Today, on tracks that are much faster than that time, even for a mature horse, is horrible fast.
It's rare a thoroughbred will run faster than 21 seconds for 2 furlongs even in sprints.
That's all Fitzsimmons needed to know. That's it.
I can't say what Seabiscuit knew but I can say what I know.
Any horse that fast deserves your undivided attention for the rest of its career.
You don't run that fast by accident. How can you?

I have often wondered if like Secretariat his heart was bigger than normal. Laura Hillenbrand’s book is a wonderful read. She goes into detail how Howard, Smith, Pollard and Seabiscuit came together.
The most beautiful movie I have ever watched with so much heart, courage and strength. Jeff Bridges nailed it again playing Mr. Howard, the owner of Seabiscuit. Chris Cooper, the trainer and Toby Mcguire,the jockey were brillant. Just a heart warming movie of hope.

The story of Seabiscuit always brings tears to my eyes and a huge lump in my throat. I first came across his story in Laura Hillenbrand’s beautifully written book. The meeting between Seabiscuit and Tom Smith is perhaps the most moving moment in the book for me, signaling the intelligence of Seabiscuit and perhaps many horses who suffer through bad treatment and wrong owners. It’s funny how often people criticize Seabiscuit’s conformation, yet I think he was uncommonly beautiful. He had a gorgeous arch to his long neck and I just can’t seem to see that his legs were considered to be too short. How terribly sad I feel when I read he only lived to be 14.
the movie made it out to be a rags to riches story and that the previous trainer didn't know what he was doing. seabiscuit was trained by arguably the greatest american horse trainer sunny jim Fitsimmons. the horse won 5 stakes races before he was sold.

Back in the late 30s, my Grandfather lived and worked on the Howard Ranch in Southern California where Seabiscuit was kept whenever he raced at Caliente in Tijuana or in Del Mar. Charles Howard & his wife, Marcela purchased the ranch in 1936. Charles Howard was my grandfather's employer. Although my grandfather was "only a ranch hand", not being Seabiscuit's rider or trainer, he worked alongside the infamous underdog race horse on a daily basis. He was the caretaker of his stall, feed, grooming, washing, beach walks, etc., among other high caliber Thoroughbreds owned by the likes of Bing Crosby, and radio comedians of the day, Lum and Abner, etc.
During my grandfather's stint at the Howard Stock Farm, he was fortunate enough to collect a handful of Seabiscuit's horse shoes, to which he later passed down to his kids, and then on to us grandkids.
Needless to say, I felt connected in a way, and extremely proud watching this short, endearing, yet powerful documentary about one of the most famous, unforgettable and history-making race horses that ever walked... ran, the earth - Seabiscuit.

Little known fact, the horse that portrayed Seabiscuit in the movie "Seabiscuit" was a great-grandson of Secretariat. Talk about irony.
My father claimed to have seen Seabiscuit race and always talked with reverence and awe about him.
They should have named him Teabiscuit.
Biscuit was just a little guy about 15.2 hands about 900lbs but he may have had the biggest heart ever, about 900 lbs

At 15 2/3 hands Seabiscuit was almost totally average.
The Admiral was literally only 2 inches taller at the withers and 6 inches longer from nose to ass but Seabiscuit had a much wider ribcage.
How else would Seabiscuit have been able to outbreak War Admiral? Admiral, up to that point was the fastest breaking horse the world had ever seen

And an indomitable will to win.
Fun Fact, Secretariat actually had the "biggest heart" it was measured after his death. Seabiscut was buried near where I used to live, in Willits California.

It was like racing a sprinter in his prime against a 89 year old obese woman with down syndrome.

When you read the racing program all these years later and the track record is still held by Secretariat, he was then and remains the Greatest of All Time!

Seabiscuit was a horse that came into America at a time when “The People” needed inspiration. This was a cheap horse compared to others on the race track. Red bonded with this smaller version of a race horse and Red became an important part of the daily routine. I love this story just like the other stories around Secretariat and others who were not expensive to own. The expense came after they won against all odds.
Okay, one of my favorite 🤩 moments of the documentary is when we are told Seabiscuit was an incorrigible ham and that we would pose for the camera. And then you SEE it on film! He literally takes a step over and poses. This horse! Such a showman!

For some reason, tears hit my eyes, many times, throughout this movie, and my faith in mankind, was renewed. God Bless Seabiscuit, Red, Charles, Tom, and all the other people, who had a part in this horse's great career. ❤

Secretariat did produce Storm Cat but a horse has no legacy without being a super sire. Even today we see the legacy of Muscle Hill as a stallion and trotter. Muscle Hill is true greatness. The legacy must include being a super sire which Secretariat was not.
He sure came along at the right time. Not only did down-and-outers in the Depression identify with him. Horseracing was at its peak, because people still either remembered daily contact with horses or, on farms, still worked with them, all of which was gone by the end of World War 2. It's harder for people nowadays to appreciate horses when they're never around them.
I wish the world could feel as I do when I've watched - read or just thought about "Seabiscuit" because his story would make the dreams of anyone possible. The whole world is feeling a pain from "Covid 19" & many awful happenings. If a little horse can lift the heart of a country then let's take his lead & lift each other Now!! Laura Hillenbrand’s beautiful book Seabiscuit, is a salute to John Steinbeck. The smaller, cast-off horse who comes from a difficult past rises up to be better and stronger for having endured life’s difficulties. Seabiscuit mirrors America during the Great Depression. It’s no wonder that America’s downtrodden related to and loved the little horse that could. Besting the blue blood’s horse, War Admiral, was just icing on the cake and proof that adversity and perseverance wins over breeding every time.
What a great tribute to both writer and horse. I've watched the movie many times and am always inspired. Thank you Laura

I love this horse and the story!! What a wonderful story and a hero that helped so many thru the hard times of the day's ahead. With so many thing's against him, he won the race of who is who in a race. Love this underdog !!! What a story!!!
I rode a horse named blaze....he was just a ranch horse used for riding fence and cattle work....but i'm here to tell you...that horse was put in the wrong place. I finally learned one day why they called him blaze.This wonder kept bugging me so i had to find out why.Then one day i noticed he got upset when other horses were ahead of him,he would buck and rear up anytime another horse got more than 10 feet ahead.
So i decided to test him...I held him back until this one horse was about 100 yards ahead...then i unleashed him.
The wind in my face,the feeling of flight possessing me...BLAZE FLEW!
I yelled see ya later as blaze and i passed the other horse as if they were standing still.I had blaze unsaddled and was grooming him by the time the other horse got to the stables.
Blaze belonged on a racetrack!.
I shed tears watching this. 'Seabiscuit' is one of my all time best movie. This is a great story for the underdog, and hearts of people surrounding Seabiscuit, touching and uniting one another.
Wait for the movie about Kadena. Remember who told the world about The Bulldog, Bulldog Hanover after his very first race as a two year old? Yeah and no one listened to me back then.

Secretariat...quite possibly. Seabiscuit, no. Sorry, only someone unfamiliar with other greats of American (and non-American) racing could make that claim.
Seabiscuit was a great horse, but he's not in the running for the greatest of all time. His career record was 89:33-15-15*; he won only 37% of his races. Even if you count *only* the races he ran after Tom Smith took over his training, his record is 44:25-7-8, a 57% winning percentage. Numerous horses running at high stakes level have done (a lot) better than that. In 1999 a committee of 7 experts put together by Blood-Horse compiled a list of the 100 greatest American-raced Thoroughbreds of the 25th century. Seabiscuit was ranked 25th. His actual 37% winning percentage was easily the worst of the top 25, and his "adjusted" winning percentage of 57% was the 3rd or 4th worst of that group. Seabiscuit was a great racehorse, but as this documentary openly admits, he was hyped. He reputation has benefited from having a compelling, dramatic story, a talented biographer, and (multiple) movies made about him.
*The Wikipedia entry on Seabiscuit is incorrect. He had fifteen 3rd place finishes, not one (per pedigree inquiry and American Classic Pedigrees).

Seabiscuit came at a different time when the country was in a depression n looking war! He gave people some hope! Secretariat was difenitly the people's horse! There was also a war looming in Vietnam too ...I guess IAM trying to say all where great in their own way

I fell in love with him when i heard he died after he lost his groom because of a broken heart he died. yes Secretariat was awesome!I just can not get out of my head though Man o War. i always hosted Secretariat still think he is great but after i heard Man o War had that sort of love in his heart I was done. i grew up with horses and was a professional exercise rider and started off in show horses jumping fences and then went to Suffolk Downs and was the best exercise rider and the trainers used me to breeze and work hard on the wood .Barr shulman.

Sometimes I miss that nowadays we dont have legends similar to Seabiscuit, Man O War, Secretariat and etc. Beside money they earned from the races.... well they gave that positive-happy unexplainable emotion to everybody. For me it is hard to find proper words to describe that feeling, when you see each of those legends racing...

+merrywriter I love American Pharoah: also the story of California Chrome is a great one: he was the son of what one would call cheap mom and dad: he won the derby, Preakness and he just won the World Cup in Dubai. He is an amazing and beautiful horse with a great back story.
I agree with you on most counts, that there aren't very many horses that are racing for the love of it, except for one: Zenyatta.
Check out Black Caviar and Winx. Both legends and both still alive. Winx just won her 26th race in a row - and she's unbeaten. Half sister to Zenyatta....
@@josietrott *Winx is not undefeated.* She had several losses early in her career, and her career record is 39:33-3-0 as of late November 2018.
Reportedly she remains in training.
On October 27, 2018, Winx won her 29th consecutive stakes,
a record fourth-in-a-row Cox's Plate. Twenty-two of those 29 races have been Group 1 races, and many or most (I am not sure exactly) have been in *open* competition, against males. Winix has not raced mostly against females, the way Ruffian, Zenyatta, Beholder, Rachel Alexandra, etc, did.
The sprinter Black Caviar retired in 2013 undefeated, with a 25:25-0-0 career record. She has had five foals.
While biologically Winx and Zenyatta are half-siblings, both being sired by Street Cry, using that term is technically incorrect. "In the horse breeding industry, the term 'half-brother' or 'half-sister' only describes horses which have the same dam, but different sires. Horses with the same sire but different dams are simply said to be "by the same sire", and no sibling relationship is implied."

I know, that is weird.. Yet Seabiscuit and Secretariat both had the same come from behind racing style.. Although Secretariat would still have beaten Seabiscuit in a race because of Secretariat's unusually big heart.. But, that is what Secretariat was born with, can't do nothing about it, use what you got..
So true! I will always give the jockey the credit! Secretariat always was last to start. However, jockey's know their horse, their capabilities. I think by slow starting them, you are saving power for the finish line! Red knew Seabiscuit, Ron Turcotte knew Secretariat, and in my humble opinion, Ron Turcotte is too modest. He credits Secretariat all the way. Red had a disability and in 1978 Ron Turcotte was paralyzed from the waist down from an accident on the track. Both great jockey's, it is so sad.
Seabiscuit had two injuries and came back and won more races!
Secretariat inherits it's grandsire stamina and physique, seabiscuit imherits it's sire resilience and stubborness😂

absolutely wonderful book to read for men and woman of all ages. I unfortunately was going through a ruff patch in life when I picked up this book it took me out of that patch if even for a day

War Admiral was sired by Man O' War and Gand sired Seabiscuit.
That horse had the blood line of the great mano'war its love love to race and could come from 8 lengths from off the pace to win.

I have what Is believed to be " Sea Biscuit's Horseshoe " I found it at a Thrift store here in California already matted to a plaque... I took the shoe off the plaque and to my surprise on the back of the shoe it reads Sea Biscuit.
I would say yes it's authentic, it's the correct size 6 and has patina on the metal tip like a 1930's revolver, it's aluminum and has scratch marks on the bottom from cleaning so it was used, also has a sticker on back from the company that plaqued it Delmas & Delmas Jewelery San Francisco. In the late 1930s, my Grandfather used to be Sea Biscuits caretaker in San Diego where my Grandparents lived and worked on The Howard Horse Farm where Sea Biscuit lived near the ocean in the most southern part of San Diego, near the Mexico border.
My Grandpa LOVED his days being around Sea Biscuit and had many stories to tell. Although I was a little kid who loved horses myself when he told his stories... I am SO proud and have a deep appreciation for this little wonder of an underdog horse that defied all odds and brought America to their feet. ♡
We have a few of Sea Biscuits old horse shoes from my Grandpa.. to this day.
I'd be safe to bet, if you're in California somewhere, you likely have one of Sea Biscuits old horse shoes.

Thx for the comment, I took the horseshoe to the seabiscuit ranch in willits and the guy there said it looks authentic, but still I would need to get it authenticated some how.
Chris, being that you took it to someone with a lot of knowledge and perhaps something to compare it to, I would surmise the horseshoe you have is authentic to Sea Biscuit himself.

Generation X Yes the guy that looked at mine is the caretaker of the seabiscuit heritage foundation and he rode seabiscuit as a child, also he said Laura Hildebrand was their two weeks prior and had the exact same shoe and was gold plated just like mine was. he was certain it was authentic and asked me to make a mold of it for him and I promised I would.
Never got into race horses until I went to The Kentucky Horse Park with my kid and his girlfriend this weekend and heard the story of Secretariat, and Man O War.
And that’s what brought me here!

I still say it all comes down to love...bisquit knew he was loved and he returned that love tenfold....he ran to parts unknown for that love....what a team they were..!!! Seabisct helpe bring the country hope! He was small, jocky too big and they had to deal with that. Despite all obstacles he did it and so did America! At that time it is amazing!❤

Between Laura's book Seabiscuit, and the book Unbroken, I was able to find the inspiration to lose 100 pounds in 7 months and join the Air Force, and subsequently setting a personal 1-mile best of 3 minutes and 58 seconds in 2013, and I couldnt help but picture Seabiscuit galloping around the track, Mr. Zamperini sprinting the full mile, we need more heroes to inspire us in this world, as it seems all-too-rare these days.
