Removing sokkas sexism arc only to ironically make suki a creep towards him, taking away kataras emotions, jealousy, motherly qualities and her bossiness, Aang not being playful enough and too determined to fulfill his responsibilities when that’s supposed to be the whole arc of his throughout the show. Zuko not being as hotheaded and self loathing as he should’ve been. And yes, the worst part is the unbelievable amount of EXPOSITION. The show is all tell and no show. Although episode 6 is what I can call a genuinely good episode.
Sokkas removal of his attitude is the worst about his character. The original show constantly shows it to be something sokka needs to grow out of, and it keeps challenging him to do so. His assumptions of there being “natural” assignment of mens and womens roles ultimately gets him humbled, and it’s his misguided result of him having to step up when his father left him in charge when the men left. His assumptions of the kyoshi warriors having to have been men, calling their practice “dance lessons” only for them to beat him every time. Even though he’s emasculated by putting on the “dress” and makeup, it’s something he consciously chooses to still do in order to learn to fight from them. This completely underscores his jaded concept of there being masculine and feminine roles and changes his worldview by showing that they’re not opposing or paradoxical. You can be both. Which is why suki says “I’m a warrior, but I’m a girl too” after she kisses him.
The fact that he gets on his knees and asks suki to teach him, and suki says “even if im a girl?” just shows the importance of his arc. If someone doesn’t think that’s great story telling and an interesting story, I don’t know what is.

Not only is that scene cringy, it also creates a huge problem. In the animated series, the old water tribe woman mentions that Aang might be the last air bender in passing, saying 'I thought air benders were extinct', to which Aang replies 'Extinct?' essentially not believing it, thinking of her as some crazy old woman. Aang learns that all the air benders were wiped out by the fire benders in a vicious attack when he visits the air temple with Katara and Sokka. Upon learning that information, he goes into the Avatar state out of anger and sadness. Makes sense. In LA however, the old woman from the water tribe tells Aang when he comes out of ice that Fire nation attacked and the Air temple was the first to fall, and that Air benders haven't been seen in a century. Upon learning that everyone he knows probably got burned alive, his reaction is to run out, sulk a little and then ask Katara about herself?! What?! Even if we think that LA version of Aang is a sociopath, when he visits the air temple, he sees the remnants of war and goes into the Avatar state out of anger and sadness?! Bro, didn't you already know that?!

Katara isn't perfect, of course, but she had so many good qualities. She was both a warrior and a home-maker. She had a warmth that was also fiery when it needed to be.
No shade on the actor, but i feel Katara could have been portrayed better. It's partly because of the horrible writing in the show, and the fact that they didn't see it fit to get acting coaches to help immerse the actors into the emotional role of the characters.

In the original the firebenders powers are maxed up at about x100 times or even more once the comet arrives in the finale and on Netflix the firebending in the opening looks exactly the same as it does later on. it was also such a WOW moment in the cartoons season 3, when you get a grasp of the comets power and here they mindlessly trash that within the first 10 minutes. and yeah, you know you have a bad opening sequence at hand, if random people in the internet can bring up irrefutable arguments based on the finale (!!!!) of the source material. this is seriously amateurish writing.

      That scene was really bad.
      1) They left Appa in there. If Zuko went for the glow then he couldve gotten Appa LOL.
      2) Aang's place is very weird cuz itsnt under the iceberg and looks like normal ice berg. Thats why in the OG Iroh says weve been here before, there is nothing. So if Zuko search better then he couldve found him there since it looks very weird amongs all that. I guess nobody went there for 100 years.
      3) That thing looked like released itself. Yeah people argue Katara did that but NO. Katara was focused on the kanoe not the ice. So it sensed Katara's bending? Why didnt that thing released itself before we can ask it now. Before Sokka's sexism caused Katara to be angry and break the iceberg and revealed Aang's spherical thing and Katara break it physically. Not that it break itself when sensed Katara's bending? LOL.
Also how is that air bending guys so idiot. As well as that earth kingdom spy. the troubling news were there even before that in the OG. Thats why they told Aang before he was 16 yo, he was the avatar. And that attack didnt happen when they say, Aang u r the avatar. In netflix, Aang learns he is the avatar and that night fire nation attacks. Also also Aang fly his bison into the storm to clear his head? LOL. I guess they didnt teach him not to fly your bison into the storm for a casual flight.

I respect men and I fully understand that I am weaker then them and that I will need protection if there's a danger. Even if I will practice martial arts, I wouldn't compete with men, because they are just naturally stronger than me... By far :/ and I don't see anything wrong with that. And I don't see anything wrong in me as a girl being capable to do "women" stuff like cooking, sewing, cleaning, sitting with children and etc.

Katara got most of her feminine qualities erased in favor of her being an empty shell of a person who exposits how she or anyone else is feeling. Who's drive to learn waterbending is not because it's apart of who she is, but to become a warrior to prove herself against the men, in other words, pushing her into a more masculine realm. The writers completely missed the point of the character and act like her old feminine qualities are a hindrance when those qualities are why she was such a good character in the first place. But in the Netflix show they basically tell you this guy is not a bad guy with the added scenes and also adding Katara and Sokkas mothers death scene now completely destroys her arc with Zuko and the impact of that eps. With this show, on the other hand, the atmosphere was more along the lines of "We threw out certain elements because they didn't work for us personally, but fingers crossed it doesn't affect the overall quality 🤪"

I’m a BIG ATLA fan. I watched the animated series when it was first released in 2005 (I was in 3rd year college). I’ve rewatched it countless times. Now at 40, still my favourite. I’ve watched it multiple times with my 2 small kids and they’re inlove with it.
Now with the live action adaptation in Netflix, surprisingly I’m ok with it. Was it perfect? Nope but I still did enjoyed it. There were some “meh” moments for sure but there were lots of goods as well. I feel like some changes were necessary. My kids on the other hand were more critical. They took noticed of the changes and quite unhappy. They love the action / bending scenes though.

Apparently Netflix think it's not okay for Sokka to be sexist but it's okay for him to be a cheater? At least in the cartoon, it was Suki who kisses Sokka on the cheek as a reward for Sokka's apology and realization of his sexist attitude towards her and also as a reminder she is a girl. They dangled their love in the air, it was there but no one confessed or called it official, it was just hinted that they liked each other. But in this, they full out kiss and then next few episodes later, Sokka kisses Yue, another girl, and I believe in another dialogue at one of the episodes, Katara mentions Sokka flirting with a firebender girl. I was just baffled by the whole thing that they made Sokka's character so dirty, womanizing people left and right on purpose. You hit the nail on the costumes and the overall vibes of the Netflix series, it wasn't bad for me but it wasn't great as well, it felt really off like it wants to be like the cartoon exactly but also not exactly by changing the dialogues, character arcs and growth, etc. I just hope they get better directors for season 2, the only scenes I enjoy were Avatar Kyoshi's appearance and Jet's scenes, their scene direction was well acted out and directed imo.

The only point I disagree about is the costuming (for the most part) I did like the costume design itself (mostly.) i felt that they added a good amount of realistic embellishment while also keeping the basic design of the cartoon. Although there were some costumes I did not like the design of.
I had more of a problem with the lack of weathering on the costumes and the hair and make up. It wasn’t all of the costumes but some of them stuck out especially.
The props I felt like were hit or miss as well. Sokkas club looked awful. His boomerang looked like it was ripped straight from the cartoon without any realistic embellishment. Also why was his boomerang made from metal? It should have been hewn from bone or ivory.

Honestly my heart goes out to the creators. They put their heart and soul into lovingly crafting this world and it's characters, yet unfortunately have been burned not _once,_ but _TWICE_ now by big studios who took THEIR vision and turned it into something else entirely. ☹️ They are probably incredibly disheartened. I would say that they need to do a better job at negotiations when choosing who to work with and how much control to relinquish in live action.
For instance, when J.K. Rowling decided to adapt her _Harry Potter_ books into live action, she made sure to include in her contract that she would retain a certain amount of control on set. For example, initially the studio or director (can't remember which one) was going to cast a White child in the role of Dean Thomas, who is Black. J.K. Rowling stepped in and put a stop to it, making sure that they knew that this kid was Black. They also were going to make Dumbledore wistfully recount memories about a woman from his youth that he'd been in love with. Rowling stepped in and told them that Dumbledore was gay and made them change the whole "love story" thing.
Team Avatar doesn't seem to retain such control in their adaptions, but maybe this is due to the fact that they share a percentage of ownership with Nickelodeon studios? I am unsure if that's actually the case, here, but if not then they most definitely need to get better agents to negotiate on their behalf. The _Avatar_ franchise is HUGE, and the creators honestly should have a lot more pull and authority than what they've been getting.

I think the failure of this show really just speaks to the death of writing in media as a whole, and it's unfortunate because I was really trying to give this show the benefit of the doubt, but I ended up giving up about halfway through the first episode and then skimmed through the rest because I was seriously so bored and frustrated that it was actually painful for me to consume.
Regarding what you said about Zuko, I think one of the reasons why he was so threatening in the original show is because he was portrayed as this hot-headed loose cannon that really no one knew what he was capable of because he was so desperate to find Aang and regain his honor, but not only do they cut out that aspect of his character and key scenes demonstrating that (like the Zhao Agni Kai and training scenes with Iroh), they instead refocus his motivation to be a contest for the throne with his sister, rather than solely focusing on his shame for being cast out and his intense need to regain the love and acceptance of his father.

I’m honestly baffled at how these screenwriters get into the industry (as it surely can’t be based on merit) when they’re demonstratively clueless about so many of the fundamentals of storytelling, the exposition dumps, inauthentic dialogue, nonexistent awareness of pacing, lack of understanding about what a character arc is and how to write one and give it thematic relevance, failure to track the cause and effect of the plot events and character arc progression (especially in assuring their changes are properly integrated into both), additionally, always starting with backstory scenes before establishing who a character is and making the audience care, something the original show was amazing at, it’s why those backstory reveal episodes unanimously became fan favourites!
The success of the original series was not random, it still stands as a masterclass in storytelling that all writers can learn from analysing, but nothing about the Netflix adaptation makes me believe these new show runners have actually done that.
The film/tv industry in the West has a neurotic obsession with “same but different” pitches, so I presume this is why these “a remake “but different”” pitches get greenlit so often, the “different” part usually being a different ideological approach that appeals to the ideological leanings/modern sensibilities of the executives, but one that is ultimately going to destroy the thematic cohesion of the source material.
The changes made to the majority of live action remakes ALL have this problem, they aren’t willing to completely overhaul the original source material to make their changes work, they try to have it coexist with unchanged elements of the old story (in part because changing it too much means losing the “same” half their pitch relied on) which inevitably becomes a incoherent mess because it never commits to being either a faithful remake or a fully fledged reimagining.

It does serve the purpose of nostalgia and cheap thrills (having some famous lines repeated and cabbage man/secret tunnel etc.) I had fun watching it but I was not completely engaged or sucked in for more than 10 minute spells in between. Seeing Kyoshi be more prominent was cool. There was always something that would bring you out of emersion, whether it's the pacing or an awkward moment and dialogue sequence that doesn't progress the plot and leave you wonder why was that line not changed or cut? I think the actors tried their best and are inexperienced clearly and I hope they will grow in the following 2 seasons. I think the script and dialogue is the main thing that makes this like a casual background watching kinda show and where they failed the most. The effects for the bending were pretty good for most battle sequences.

These people need to chill. You can dislike the show without the need to go out your way and harass the actors. Bullying is CRAZY; these people need MEDICATION AND THERAPY. Imo the series isn't very good, BUT it's nowhere as bad as the 2010 ATLA movie adaptation or even the live-action Death Note (bad reviews) or the live-action Cowboy Bebop (mixed reviews); both of which GOT CANCELLED.....Tbh, the Netflix live-action Avatar for me was a 4/10. The CGI had some choppy moments that could've been reviewed and fixed given that this production had a $15million per episode budget, the script was unfortunately weak given a few of the re-writes which didn't play out the character development well, and the acting wasn't very good from the main cast at all in my opinion. I understand that the main cast (Aang, Katara, Sokka, & Zuko) are all newcomers and for the majority of them, this is their first big gig but they definitely NEED to take some more acting lessons to better the craft, if the show manages to get picked up for a season2. 'Katara' lacked emotion, 'Sokka' didn't have great comedic timing, and 'Aang' & 'Zuko' weren't consistent with their character/line-delivery during some scenes. The show is receiving mixed reviews (within reason), so its honestly a toss up on whether it'll be able to survive to see another season. It's on par to the feedback/criticism CowBoy Bebop got...so only time will tell. I do wish the cast the best of luck though. I will note that I found the secondary & tertiary characters to be more enjoyable to watch than the main characters. Arden Cho as June, Sebastian Amoruso as Jet, and Maria Zhang as Suki were absolutely SPOT ON with their acting and great casting choices!

If I didn’t know Katara was supposed to be Katara, I’d be like “who’s this random girl travelling with them?” She’s so mild mannered; it’s like they had a checklist of character traits and just took the first 2: optimistic and nurturing. But Katara is soooo much more than that. And Azula, why is she so much like Zuko with the hot temper and insecurities?! She should be the exact opposite, cold and manipulative. It was soooo frustrating to watch. Kinda terrified to see them tackle Toph…

  • @KrisBailey
    @KrisBailey 10 місяців тому

You mention how the removal of Sokka’s sexism does a lot to impact the story right from the first episode. In addition to that, I feel like what they’ve done with Katara adds to the issue in much the same way. It’s like they were too scared that the show would offend people if they committed to that portrayal of Sokka, while at the same time they substantially watered down Katara and her more fiery/outspoken personality, as if they were scared that presenting her as too “#girlboss” would also upset a certain demographic of people…it’s just so typical of mainstream screenwriting these days. Everything has to be so sanitized to mitigate even the slightest risk of not appealing to the widest audience possible, which results in bland characters, and stories that aren’t capable of exploring their themes with any sort of compelling depth.

I get movie or tv adaptations from comics or books to live action because the medium is so drastically different. Seeing text or still images to motion is a good transition.
But when seeing an animation to tv or movie, it just seems a bit pointless because any criticism of changes to the story is usually met with "its an adaptation what you expect?" If the changes result in an inferior product, then whats the point of the adaptation and why not just watch the original. Side note is that video games is a whole other ball game but thats a different topic.

It's weird they didn't keep the sexism of Sokka's character beliefs in the beginning. It wasn't an issue when it was made blatantly clear in the One Piece Live adaptation for Zoro's backstory (how his rival was discouraged to be a swordswoman because she was a girl). It ended up strengthening the character instead when Zoro wanted his rival to chase that dream instead. It's basically cutting out growth from Sokka because he was in a teen phase. Then again, I guess they made a lot of weird decisions with ATLA LA. Compared to One Piece, ALTA LA had less episodes to summarize (OP LA season one had 96 episode to summarize into 8 episodes) and it's kinda sad it didn't turn out as well as OP LA did.

Have you seen One Piece Live Action? That one LA adaptation is really liked among fans and non-fans of the original manga. I enjoyed it too. Although I have to admit that there is also something wrong with the costumes (at least for a few episodes) - maybe that's the new Netflix idea that fans would love the LA if it looks like cheap cosplay.

I think in One Piece, the "cosplays" look alright because unlike Avatar, the characters are bonkers unrealistic. The have odd hair colors, body proportions, and very cosplayable outfits.

If you want to see an animated and live action version of the same story, I recommend "The Untamed" (live action) and "Mo Dao Zu Shi" (animated), if you don't have any issues listening to Mandarin dialogues. They're based off the same novel, but the live action version has more run time than the animated one. Both adaptations are fairly well-received, though there are certain elements that might be more difficult to understand if you're not familiar with the xianxia and wuxia genres.

I’ve been pretty much done with all these live-action remakes since 2019. Whenever I hear about a “new and exciting addition to the lineup of Disney/Netflix adaptations” I just immediately assume it’s gonna be a dumpster fire on release. Heck, I still struggle to believe it when people talk about the One Piece live action series actually being good.

The sad part is that the show is actually more real.
Thats closer to how people dressed in the old times in the east.
The idea of dirty clothes and lack of colors in the past its a thing from Hollywood that dont fit the reality.

All of these "remake/adaptation" people seem to just ignore what people actually like about the original. All I can say about Netflix's adaptation is...it's better than the movie. Which isn't a good thing

The info dump complaint is one I've heard about Madame Web too. Are we seeing AI writing at work? 😂
And I'm actually surprised they took out the sexist stuff seeing as how Hollywood loves making men out to be misogynists at every opportunity.

The animation was a masterpiece. This show was still good. If you go into the mindset "ok it has to be like the animation" then you will always be disappointed. Amazing art style for how they portray the world. Its not supposed to be realistic but a fantasy setting. Exactly how I would expect how colorful the world of Avatar to be. Sure there are flaws but not as bad as how you making it out. My only critique is that they removed a lot of humor which was what the cartoon was all about.

I have to rewatch the first episode four times and then it took me one time to get through the second episode two attempts to get through the third episode and about two attempts to get through the 4th episode. I just can't stomach it. What they did with King boomy just pissed me off like why did they reveal who he was to aang so quick. They just dropped the ball changing the story rushing it they should have put it into like 16 to 20 episodes instead of eight
