OMG!!!!! Oh the memories! Discovered Shonen Knife in '91 as a random pick from Columbia House mail order music. Fell in love immediately! Ahhh the memories of music pre-mp3...
Sarah, SK are still going strong and have made at least 10 more albums since Let's Knife... although, it remains my fave... my second fave is from the 2000s, Free Time! Their latest is Adventure.
Yeah that was an amazing opportunity for America and Asia/japanese aliances. Funny how aliences and the description of a person from another place is called an 👽
The 90s were a high point for music and the more so coming on the heels of the to date cultural low of the 1980s. Rock got good again and morphed into new forms, Hippie is at full strength and huge festivals and tours are crisscrossing the country seeding rock culture all over America. Grunge brings rock back after the silliness of commercial hair metal. Rave explodes with electronica becoming an established alternative and a new scene is born. Jazz literally is revived from the dead and a vibrant jazz scene is reborn. Hip hop gets good and an identity and scene coalesce. Bluegrass is crackling. It didn't matter what you were into you couldn't go wrong. What on earth are you talking about? It doesn't sound like you were there.
Andrew Powell He never told me about them. I found out about them in the 90's through Rolling Stone Magazine. Although, I think Nirvana was a great act now, I did not like Nirvana back then because Kurt was always crying and complaining in interviews. So I did not find out about them through him at all. I bought "Let's Knife" at a pawn shop in 93' and that's how I got into Shonen Knife. Cobain had nothing to do with it.
Wow. Mind Blower. Never had any idea that Kurt or Nirvana dug this band. I liked them a lot in 1993 and still think they had an interesting twist on the sound.
+Erik Molnar I am not saying that he got you into them. I am saying that he allowed them to tour with Nirvana which got them recignized by a record company.
Saw them at the Paladium... they literally stopped playing to tell me and my buddy to stop being rough on each other 😂 "Boys no fight!". "We're not fighting, we're friends!".

These girls know how to write a pop song. This album will put you in a good mood. Lovely melodies. Upbeat. A great example of the genre and the fact that they are Japanese makes it even more interesting/fun. Good music for a sunny day, or for a day when you're bumming out. It will bring the sun to you.
I love this whole record. I played it so much back then that I wore out the cassette. I heard about them through Kurt Cobain hearing they were one of the bands he loved so I checked them out.... Glad I did.
No nonsense, straight down the line rock 'n' roll. Great live. Don't miss them next time they are in your town. Or take a flight to Japan for the full experience!
Bought this on cassette when it was still brand new! Gotta say Nancy Yamano is one of the reasons why I decided to learn guitar. She's so underrated and one of the best riff writers imo.
This is super cool. We are here in 2021, space jump probably a promotion, life is better and clerks are, we all wish, better paid. Back then in 1992 I can imagine that the ''shonen'', it's universe, was probably a label that mostly appealled boys and young men. Great to see girls fending for themselves toward promoting their access to the entertainementship.
Awesome album! Got to see them tonight (10/3/2014) here in Austin Tx on 'Overdirive' tour. Aint't seen them in 3 yrs. But it was worth the wait. Hope they get to your neck of the woods soon if they already haven't.
But another part of the group’s charm, as the New York Times wrote, “[lay] in the cultural gap between the records it [emulated] and the music it actually [played],”34 and “the cultural anomalies that resulted when a foreign band [taught] itself how to play American rock-and-roll with the innocence of a child reading the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.”

Truly a spectacular trio, something about this band makes me come back to reality
One of my all time favorite albums I can’t believe I can’t stream this on any platform thank you so much for posting it
This is the greatest thing I have heard in a while.
This is great music to clear out your head.
Always loved these girls (ladies, now)...
Yup, founding member & lead vocalist, Naoko Yamano is 53 years young now & still 'bringin' it'. Got love it & Long Live the Knife !!!
@@why-why-whywhywhy 10 years later! 63!
Wow, the Ramones influence is inescapable. Nothing wrong with that of course; great little band!!
This is brilliant because they do not give a fuck.
Barking mad lyrics but great music. Life enhancing! Never get tired of listening to the girls.
Go Gos meets The Ramones!
Better than the Go gos
I'm here for Kurt and Dave when they was with Krist stoned asf during a Japanese interview

Hello Hello!
Anybody ever heard of a band called Zelda? They fucking shred as well.
Date Stamp : 1994
Fucking incredible. This album was so above all the shitty grunge music that dominated the horrible 90's music.

Funny you should say that, considering that Kurt Cobain helped discover them.

Japan is so far away from Europe. More than half of Shonen Knife's tracks are hits and so what ...?
I don`t know what to think of this!? It`s pretty shite and cheesy, yet brilliant...........
+Abnsdllnnlosnfd Great pop/rock songs with great hooks. If you want something 'deeper' try Stravinsky. I actually enjoy listening to both.
Overproduced. Damn you, 1990s!!!
great japanese garage band
masterpiece album

Sounds like The Ramones mixed with Dressy Bessy, Japanese style. Me like!
Absolutely right! The Ramones - one of the best bands ever. Dressy Bessy - my favourite band. Tailor-made for me.
Wow, I haven’t thought about Dressy Bessy since 2007, thanks for the reminder

omg too much nostalgia i listened to this non-stop when i was little and recently i saw them live :D
On this album the Knife simply drive into the music like a hot knife into butter. Such energy. One of my favourites of theirs.
