Dan in the song is being stretched to his limit daily, maybe by social anxiety and so can only manage a hand hold and a wave goodnight for the girl he likes. the 'dancing' is def a metaphor for sex but also its dancing as a representation of intimacy.?? Dan in the song is being stretched to his limit daily, maybe by social anxiety and so can only manage a hand hold and a wave goodnight for the girl he likes. Even then doing these actions removes his hand from the cliff and risks his life (aka the control he has over how people perceive him??)
At home he's still holding on to the cliff bc he's just that hyper aware of himself even around the people who live with him. He can only let go when he's alone with the door closed(dancing). Dancing while being socially awkward and uncoordinated is like an actual death sentence when you have anxiety, so he feels his body let go (of the cliff) when he dances with somebody else. But, his expression ends up being so beautifully passionate and honest (the bedroom dancer) that people who perceive him would never suspect his crippling anxiety.
On the other hand Dan's dance is about how men in society are expected to be more sexually inclined and being known as a 'virgin' is sort of an emasculation in a way. He has always struggled with intimacy and when he is finally able to be vulnerable with someone, he is not reaching an achievement but instead filling an expectation. You don't know it was his first time because you didn't expect it to be, and he doesn't tell you because it doesn't matter, he has done the dance and 'became a man', he is now Dan the Dancer.
