Beautiful conclusion at the end. Thanks for sharing your story. I’m preparing to get my masters in school psychology. Right now I’m working as a registered behavior tech. Love to see how it all works together. May God continue to bless and guide you on your journey. ❤
A BT is a great field to be in! I have worked alongside some BTs and our jobs go hand in hand so your experience as a BT will definitely put you ahead of so many people in the field of school psych. Thank you and may God do the same for you as well! 💕
This was divine confirmation for me! I’ve been looking into Brooklyn College’s program and to discover that you went there to place yourself on the path to becoming a School Psychologist is reassuring. Thank you for your honest insight! 💜
This was a great video! I’m currently a classroom teacher and am looking to transition into a new role. I think school psychology would be a great fit for me! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Hear me out when I say this sis: I cant see any guy falling for you hold on hold on....🤫☝🏽 I can only see a man RISING FOR YOU meaning that your so bout your business that it would inspire a man to go harder in his stuff to be with u 🥰💯 keep working hard sis
California starts at around $85,000 or so. So the pandemic has twisted things and I feel bad for the new peeps. It hasn’t been this bad….I’m 11 years in- seriously these last two years have been abnormal. Specially with the people shortage. Ugh. And the emotional crisis in our kids ….its been so difficult. Behavioral difficulties are definitely very high. And the teachers are sooo burned out and overwhelmed. All to say, yes, education is definitely going through a rough patch right now…the nice part is hearing other school psychs talk about their experiences where they are…I’m glad I’m not alone. 😢❤
Thank you for sharing! I started my career the year the pandemic happened so I will never have that experience of “normalcy” pre-pandemic 😩. But like you said, prior to the pandemic, things were fine. The pandemic really impacted so many jobs in a way that is forcing people to quit or go into early retirement.
It’s inspiring to see a black woman in the position of a school psychologist! What other career advancement does a career in school psychology offer? Are you able to pursue private practice as a school psychologist? Can you provide private practice counseling services with a masters in school psychology?
Thank you! Unfortunately no. The degree can only be used to practice in the school system but do your research. You never know. Colleagues have told me that there are positions within the state in which you can work even if you just have the school psych degree. Maybe in some states you can practice outside of the school system with just a psych degree. From what I know, The only advancement is moving up to be a supervisor of the school psych department. For private practice, you would have to get certification (don’t necessarily have to go for another degree). You can get the certification as a mental health counselor, LMFT, etc. it’s all dependent on what you want to practice outside of the school system. … Keep in mind that this is just my knowledge. Researching will give you a more concrete and guided answer. Hope this helps!
I like to learn about the field of school psychology 🙏🏻 thank you for the informative video . If you have to test a student who exhibit dangerous behaviors such as throwing sharp objects , how should the testing be done ? 🙏🏻 thank you so much for advise
That’s something you would have to talk to your supervisor about and get guidance there. For me personally, I would not test the student because now my safety is at risk. I would also document as much as possible each time you try to take the student to test and the throwing happens. If you must test the student and there’s no way around it, have another adult sit with you in the room or use a token system to get the student to stop throwing things at least for the duration of the testing.
I am wanting to go for my masters in school psych, but I'm wondering a few things. Do they give you a raise every year or do you have to ask for it? Also, is the job security good? In a way that if anything happens (like the pandemic), will the job be secure and is it essential?
That’s great that you’re looking into this field! With regards to the raise, it depends on district and state but what I know is that working for the Department/Board of Education anywhere, you are supposed to get a raise every year. In the school systems, it is automatically given as far as I know. You go up a “pay step”… The job security is wonderful and that’s because of actually working in the school system. One of the main reasons why alot of people end up working in the school system is for job security and for the future (e.g. when you have kids, retire, health insurance coverage). School psychs are needed now more than ever especially because of the pandemic. We work closely with the special education department and because of the pandemic, so many kids were extremely academically and behaviorally delayed. And school psychs are in high demand so you are more likely than not able to get hired quickly. Every where in every state is looking for a school psych.
What are they steps of becoming a school psychologist?? Like after you get your bachelors degree what Masters degree do you need to get?? I’m currently in school right now working towards my bachelors degree and I’m just trying to see what master’s degree I need in order to become a school Psych. Thank you
Yes! Another black school psych! I’m in my first year of my school psych graduate program.
