Before and after workouts or in the morning or night you should hold a bar and just hang for a few minutes (multiple times if needed to reach a few minutes) to help align your spine and shoulders so your scoliosis does not get too bad.

I found bamboo skewers at bed bath and beyond, i think.. It was a while back. Ive seen them other places too, though, they're around. Works perfect! I just taped them at the bottom, the tape doubles as a handle.
I made one out of "marshmallow skewers" from Walmart, but they are bigger diameter than his brush. Just buy a few packs and wrap electrical tape around the handle area to hold together. Its not as soft as a real brush though. The marshmallow skewers have a real smooth finish compared to others. Still I think the Shifu Yan Lei is a better idea if you can afford it.
If you mean the physical hardness of the bamboo, it's not very hard. I've broken a couple of sticks off hitting myself too strongly. It's mainly for circulation
