This is a masterpiece. I have heard so many versions of this famous tune, but this version tops everything I have ever heard before. Magnificent is all I can say!
The first time I heard it, was when Joe McDonagh sang it on the steps of the Hogan Stand, after Galway ended their great hurling famine in 1980...May God be good to our Joe...R.I.P. Warrior +++
Saw this on Late Late Show and was blown away....beautiful version of this song. Thought the singing style was fantastic - both the girls and Damien. Well done!
One of the most beautiful performances I've ever heard. Without even concentrating on lyrics, the arrangement, melody and vocals hit me emotionally every time.
The use of this rendition in association with the Connacht rugby team's departure from Knock makes the song even more evocative and powerful.. What wonderful singing and harmonising.
Lovely harmony there girls....it's a powerful song and one man did it great justice after the 1980 All Ireland Hurling Final when was sung with gusto, feeling and emotion, God Bless you Joe McDonagh
SHEILA...,STOP being sick you have nothing to defend but alline national humility to share & being in humility proud of,as no nation sings like this..I just would ask you to look at Connaucht today..an undeclared world heritage site if natural beauty, charm, energy,& Soul... but so respect your frustation..candidly..I believe deeply..the music as this sets a People free..on the open world, despite borders...the prize has been given...Irish International Respect & the home of great Music..God bless you Shela. John.Tipperary.
@@johnscanlon6977 Aye right enough music sets people free alright, Sure we should have sang to our hearts content in 69 while being burnt out of our homes by loyalists. Maybe The Rising was a waste of time, and if only Connolly had if been aware he could have sang his way out of Kilmanion instead of being executed. Or the children in my Family that were murdered by RUC, If only they had of sang a few tunes, they would not have been shot at point blank range. I'm sure the Brits that murdered my innocent cousin had of heard his sweet voice, they might have decided to leave him be, as a national treasure. You accuse me of being sick, typical So you take yourself off 🤬
Magnificent and touching rendition of this very moving song the harmonies and the voices are just superb. It is one of my most favourite UA-cam recordings and the video background matches the sentiment in the voices
Lovely song!! Damo looks like he's gonna laugh when they're all singing the last few lines though!! He's playing in Mallow tonight actually so might go down to see him...
The north a sleep, Alas may Erin weep, When Ulster lies in slumbered sleep, At last a voice like thunder speak, The north awake, the north awake Let england shake, we’ll watch till death for Erin’s sake
My mother's maiden name is "Harrigan." I, obviously, have an Irish connection through her. The trials and tribulations that the Irish suffered, sadly, too many other people suffer. This is an extremely well-performed song that asks, "Why?" and, "Can't we do better?"
To Pragmatic 1, etc. : " a call to war" is not what I want. War is death, and it should die. I totally agree with that. I just wish all people could live in peace and learn to treat each other with love and respect without any sort of violent revolution to get there.
Musical beauty to my mind ,comes ever so rarely..but this is The Rare..complicated simplicity...but it rattles the Soul of Connaucht...as they so so suffered via Cromwell, perhaps why we we and were hungry & asleep of exaustion via history..Yet today through generational sacrufice & dam hard work..Connaucht a condender for World Heritage..Galway alone speaks volumes but Sligo,Donegal & Mayo..hardly Cromwell's call " Too Hell or to Connaucht"!! 17TH 18TH 18TH 20TH + Entrepreneurs with little or anything, the worked to the bone and created...I think a kind of Heaven...This beautyful song, draw from this mist tuff ,heartbreaking history was written then..a people who could not be stupified, culturaly intimified, or ignored...their grit, courage, sucess,& culture was despite All...indominalbe..to me this us the essence of Ireland..& this tendition..it's lovliest,Lumiere,Pauline,Damien..wow! & flutustist...of the old Irish 16th cent Bards, his inspired to my ear..says all.Musical beauty of complex simplicity & a most beautyful piece of music,The West Awake..we can really only appreciate vua Time..but this interpretation.....Heavenly! Great , with emotion, and passion, let Ireland AWAKE AGAIN IN 2013, We refuse to be on our knees to the enemy within, AND THE FOREIGNERS WITHOUT, NO TO EVICTIONS, THIS IS NOT THE GENOCIDE YEARS, OF BLACK '47 NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL THE CROPPY LIE DOWN, If you do not GIVE, We will TAKE.

Saw this on Late Late Show and was blown away....beautiful version of this song. Thought the singing style was fantastic - both the girls and Damien. Well done!
the lyrics are so stirring, and are somehow amplified by a very gentle rendition. This version is fantastic.
