As a road building contractor I can tell you that the corruption at many levels remain the reason for these situations as we have people who can do it professionally but they are not given the work, as usual it is a crony based system which piles the cost up and the workmanship is terrible.

17:24 I fixed 4 potholes outside my house at R200 per pothole. 3 months after mine were fixed by me, JRA came to fix the other 7. All 7 are now falling apart... Mine are still proper.
I live in the Emfuleni district. In my community, we raise money ourselves to fix potholes, we also fix our own street lights. We also have private citizens to remove refuse. Unfortunately we cannot remove our own sewerage. We even have private businesses who are fixing large burst pipes at their own cost because of the damage to roads and obviously the waste of clean water. These water leaks are left unattended for years. I'm not sure what we are paying rates and taxes for.
The state of the country is disgusting. A well built country was handed over and the anc has allowed it to be destroyed. Way past time to remove incompetence at the poll.

And this is why I'm forever thankful that I live in the Western Cape. We do not have to deal with roads like these. I worked in Gauteng in 2020. The surface of the R21 was literally disintegrating on the way to Kempton (at the Benoni off ramp). A stone hit my windscreen which cracked. I got the windscreen replaced. On the very same day I got the car back, on the very same spot another stone took the brand new windscreen. You just don't see stuff like this in the Western Cape. I drive at least 500 km every weekend out to winefarms, small towns, etc. and it is always a massive pleasure to drive.
I have driven the road to Clocholan and its incredibly horrible and stressful to drive. I would, however like to make a shout to out for a NEW and BRILLIANT road, which is almost complete, which runs from Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape all the way through to Barkley East. The existing road was terrible and it has now been ripped up and redone, it is absolutely amazing to be able to drive safely and comfortably on this road. I live in one of the small rural villages on this road and Aliwal North is our closest shopping centre.

As an Emergency Care Office employed within EMS, it so dangerous to respond to an emergency call because you don't know when you will be involved in accident because of these huge portholes
What is the reason for the ANC Organisation not want to fix the roads or call back the people that got these lucrative tenders and contracts for these roads to be repaired🤔
They are the ones that have received the tenders, so calling the people back to account for their lack of action will be an issue for them as they will be exposed. Its sad to see what they are doing to our country and our great nation.
Are we heading towards a Minister of Roads? We reported a pothole of about the size of a tea cup late last year, it's now a crater. It's now apparent that there is no tar.
I live in the Eastern Cape and the roads are bad here too. And in town they are getting really bad in the area where I live and work. One of the factors in choosing what motorbike to get (can't ride a car) was the road conditions. I'm not much of a fan of road bikes to start off with. But with the way the roads are now, you need something with high clearance, big knobbly tyres and that you can see the road by your front tire, are a must. The high clearance to handle going in and out of potholes, Knobbly tyres to have better control with all the road gravel and been able to see up close the potholes to avoid them or weave between them. Heck some days it can feel like I'm taking a ride in the bush with all the potholes making things really bumpy and all the weaving to avoid them from time to time.
That first man was talking nonsense this boils down to lack of maintenance and why should I learn to miss potholes, rather than expecting my taxes to be properly utilised.
Yes the trucks play a big roll, there are far too many on the roads also due to less trains but there are less trains due to vandalism to allow for the boom of the latest trucking companies. The trucks are also driving through areas for short cuts that were never designed to handle multiple heavy vehicles in a single day. Take that with less maintenance...

The ANC is a perfect example of how building a civilization is an evolutionary skill gained over many centuries. Helen Zille was 100% correct- thanks to colonization we have the infrastructure we have today albeit in shambles.
Think it was kinda obvious even back then, that why would anyone pur a bunch of clueless fools in power of a complex country? With what experience? History of progressivness? This is the result. Surely people has to see this coming back when.
Near bloemhof dam R59 and the r505 on the north west freestate border is a joke, if a 18wheeler keeps left of the road what chance do you have in a car or a bakkie
I would like to help. Potholes are caused by erosion. The viewers would have noticed that the roads were muddy and wet where the worst problems were found. There are many issues around why our roads are falling apart and we are aware of them all. I would like to focus on the things we can do about some of these issues. The three big one's (besides corruption) being: 1. Rain (water damage - erosion) For centuries roads are being built using the same methods viz. (a) Layering gravel to form a strong base (now includes tons of cement) and (b) using asphalt or various other methods for the top layer. This is an archaic method that might've worked in the past but we've never had traffic like this or such a huge amount of heavy (commercial) vehicles using our old and tired road network. Over time the base layer deteriorates and with heavy rains the actual "road foundation" starts to erode. This means that there is nothing to hold the top layer in place and Voila! A pothole is born! There is a technology that has taken over 16 years to perfect that was invented right here in South Africa that solves this problem. It involves using new tech to build the base that is 100% hydrophobic (waterproof). It also happens that using this new tech produces greater strengths than conventional methods. This effectively means The end of potholes!! The second big issue is the cost of road buidling/rehabilitation which leads me to the second point viz... 2. Cost (up to R9 million per km ) to build a municipal road This new tech drastically reduces costs because it does not require the importing of good gravel to build the base. Instead we use in situ materials (whatever is there already) and bind that. We also use NO CEMENT. Costs are reduced by 30% all the way up to 80%! We have done the excercise and can build a waterproof and stronger and longer lasting municipal road for around R3 million/km. 3. Potholes are expensive to repair (and repairs don't last) We have revolutionised pothole repairs using a special formula to bind the aggregate also making it waterproof and nearly indestructible. It is cheap and very easy to use. We have addressed the issue of water damage and can build roads at a fraction of the normal cost and at a fraction of the time traditional road building would take. We also possess a cheap and effective pothole repair solution that can be rolled out immediately. So why are aren't we using this technology? No really - I'm actually asking, cos we've been trying to get people to listen for years now.
Hello brother. Very interesting topic. I'm also from SA in KZN. Would like to engage more on this topic if it's not too big of a hassle. Do you use social media facebook or instagram where i can contact you to learn more
Africa wants to advance to the living standard of Western Europe, but people here often fail to understand that prosperity evolves around having (and respecting) standards, norms and rules, which is why rule-abiding countries like Germany are so highly successful. In South Africa many people think that rules are not to be taken too seriously. For example: if there was a rule saying that roads have to be inspected for indicators of damage every 6 months and if damage has been identified, it has to be immediately fixed, we wouldn't be in such a situation. A society that has no capacity to maintain what it builds is not sustainable.
Born in Johannesburg but with family ties to East London, Eastern Cape, I've witnessed the transformation of both regions. My father used to remark on East London's potholes, something that remained unique to the Eastern Cape as I grew up. However, last year I was surprised to find Johannesburg in a state of neglect, a stark contrast to its past vibrance. Even the Free State appeared chaotic during my road trip, filled with dangerous truck drivers and stray livestock. This experience underscored the importance of holding our elected leaders accountable. Voting should be an act of trust in their ability to deliver, not an act of fear or blind loyalty. Their failures should be met with our collective dissatisfaction.
Yet the municipalities are going after the people who fix the ones in their area, because it is showing up them as being less than competent. You have many roads where you have grass growing in the cracks.
Go try the 35km stretch between Senekal and Rosendal. You have to 4x4 a couple of times. This should be a challenge road to go test the toughest vehicles for durability. I almost destroyed my 4x4 on this road. And there is no alternative.
As Layton put it 'we' need to hold the government to account'. This should be done at all levels from Municipal to Provincial to National. Until such time that we the people of South Africa stand up to them I'm afraid that nothing will change. I believe that if John Steenhuizen shows them what will happen for them when they vote for a competent party, with an excellent track record, the DA's support will grow hugely...
Recently drove on relatively new roads between bothaville and kroonstad and viljoenskroon to potch that already has potholes within a year or two. Dont think the fixing wil even help
The criminal anc don’t worry about roads as they fly all over the place. The coal trucks are also a major problem as there are tens of thousands on the roads going to Durban and Mozambique ports. Between coal trucks and potholes. I have nearly lost my life on our roads multiple times.
0:05 " in 2024 we can make our intentions clear..." Unfortunately the ' we' are very few. As for a coalition government- more time will be spent on horse trading and council coups. Alas South Africa...
I drove with a friend of mine to Standerton, to go and visit my Aunt, and we took a wrong off ramp earlier in the year, and it was raining, as we realized it that we have taken the wrong off-ramp, we found ourselves on a extremely bad road full of potholes, and as it is raining, it made everything trying to dodge potholes and keeping to speed with the rain on the way to Standerton, the wrong off-ramp we took was only 70Km out of our way, but it was littered with potholes, too a point that I had no choice but too drive a minimum speed of 10-15km/h and due to trying to dodge the potholes the car almost rolled on a dead quiet road, just because Government can not keep the roads in order. The road in question was the R50 from the N17 off-ramp
I'm a 43 year old man, but I almost cried when I was driving between Ermelo and Piet Retief along N2, I was convinced I'm not gonna get home in KZN that day😂😂
I was waiting for this episode cause this potholes will be the end of us honeslty a s worse part they damage the car and the expenses are too much this things will end up causing serious accidents if we are not aware and the most heart breaking thing is sometimes when you drive you can't see them
Try the road from Trompsberg to Philippolis and from Philippolis to Colesberg. A total of 120Km and will take between 2 and 2.6 hours if you drive carefully! Thanks Ace Magatshue for total incompetence and the follow up by your successors who do nothing! The road users should protest by not paying license fees for vehicles as that money is not being used to fix the roads. Corrupt and dishonest.
Great episode. Let's do away with government we paying to much on taxes and not seeing where the money is going. So many suburbs are doing things themselves now.. this is sad. Potholes cause unnecessary deaths in South Africa
What happens to the trillions of Rand collected from motor vehicle licenses , just returned from the Cape , & guess what NO P/ holes , roads marked perfectly , a pleasure to be on those roads. Let us stop bribery and corruption, DA please help.& get honest folks .
Please stop burning tyres on the roads, look at all the places where there is normally tyre burning when there is a strike. That makes the road surface go bad long before what's planned for. Now me as an instructor must train drivers to get the best performance and fuel results???

Other countries take a insurance bond from mines .The bond will be used to fix the roads used by the mines . Every year they will assess the maintenance and money left . If at any given financial year the maintenance was zero the companies does not need to top up the bond. If maintenance was done and what eve money is left the mine then need to top the bond to its agreed amount. It can be implemented by our government “ BUT “
Just remember all that is bad in SA is because unless the ANC cadres profit directly it won't be done the ANC has utter disregard for the South African people. Near bloemhof dam R59 and the r505 on the north west freestate border is a joke, if a 18wheeler keeps left of the road what chance do you have in a car or a bakkie
not perfect BUT viva Western Cape VIVA
I would like to help. Potholes are caused by erosion. The viewers would have noticed that the roads were muddy and wet where the worst problems were found. There are many issues around why our roads are falling apart and we are aware of them all. I would like to focus on the things we can do about some of these issues. The three big one's (besides corruption) being:
1. Rain (water damage - erosion)
For centuries roads are being built using the same methods viz.
2. Cost (up to R9 million per km ) to build a municipal road
This new tech drastically reduces costs because it does not require the importing of good gravel to build the base. Instead we use in situ materials (whatever is there already) and bind that. We also use NO CEMENT. Costs are reduced by 30% all the way up to 80%! We have done the excercise and can build a waterproof and stronger and longer lasting municipal road for around R3 million/km.
3. Potholes are expensive to repair (and repairs don't last)
We have revolutionised pothole repairs using a special formula to bind the aggregate also making it waterproof and nearly indestructible.
Do you use social media facebook or instagram where i can contact you to learn more
Where I live there was vehicles and materials sitting for weeks and nothing happened. Madness
I have been a victim of such.. i am still traumatised at the thought and sight of them death holes.
Yet the municipalities are going after the people who fix the ones in their area, because it is showing up them as being less than competent. You have many roads where you have grass growing in the cracks.
Dare I say this? South Africa used to have some the best roads having driven many thousands of kilometres in the sixties, seventies and eighties.
Potholes. Proudly brought to you by the ANC. Dankie…
Go try the 35km stretch between Senekal and Rosendal. You have to 4x4 a couple of times. This should be a challenge road to go test the toughest vehicles for durability. I almost destroyed my 4x4 on this road. And there is no alternative.
I think back how i once confidently rode those very roads on a motorcycle in the dark 😅...the good old days.
Come to Port Nolloth, Northern Cape, 99% of tarred roads have potholes, the townships, NO ROADS, JUST GRAVEL/SAND.
ANC : A better life for all ( that travel on the gravy train ). Stuff the rest !
Lol😂😂😂
Why must taxpaying citizens pay to fix potholes? Get rid of this gutterment
Was the "road scientist" a South African James May?
Recently drove on relatively new roads between bothaville and kroonstad and viljoenskroon to potch that already has potholes within a year or two. Dont think the fixing wil even help
check N2 from Ermelo to Piet Retief ,
The criminal anc don’t worry about roads as they fly all over the place. The coal trucks are also a major problem as there are tens of thousands on the roads going to Durban and Mozambique ports. Between coal trucks and potholes. I have nearly lost my life on our roads multiple times.
ANC getting rid of the legacies of apartheid, one road at a time!
Proudly sponsored by the ANC...
Absolutely no surprise..
Did we expect anything less..
0:05 " in 2024 we can make our intentions clear..." Unfortunately the ' we' are very few. As for a coalition government- more time will be spent on horse trading and council coups. Alas South Africa...
WELL DONE ANC
From Qalabotja to Newcastle passing Vrede and Memel.
I have been to Cloclane, I know those potholes however for me R65 from Ermelo to Port Retife takes the cup
I'm a 43 year old man, but I almost cried when I was driving between Ermelo and Piet Retief along N2, I was convinced I'm not gonna get home in KZN that day😂😂
I once used R65 from Ermelo to Piet Retife... Yooooh 😢
I was waiting for this episode cause this potholes will be the end of us honeslty a s worse part they damage the car and the expenses are too much this things will end up causing serious accidents if we are not aware and the most heart breaking thing is sometimes when you drive you can't see them
I visited Zimbabwe in 2017 and the state of the roads is an eyesore, watching this video reminds me of the roads in Zimbabwe.
Viva ANC Vivaaaaaa!!! Well done government! You have officially screwed up SA.
Great episode. Let's do away with government we paying to much on taxes and not seeing where the money is going. So many suburbs are doing things themselves now.. this is sad.
Potholes cause unnecessary deaths in South Africa
Try find a pothole in WC- you won't. The difference is the DA. ANC can't run a bath.
What happens to the trillions of Rand collected from motor vehicle licenses , just returned from the Cape , & guess what NO P/ holes , roads marked perfectly , a pleasure to be on those roads. Let us stop bribery and corruption, DA please help.& get honest folks .
Driving at night when it rains is deathly!
Please stop burning tyres on the roads, look at all the places where there is normally tyre burning when there is a strike. That makes the road surface go bad long before what's planned for.
Now me as an instructor must train drivers to get the best performance and fuel results???
there is this road you missed when you are going to Newcastle from Johannesburg, that's the worst ever.
So instead of fixing the potholes they simply slap a pothole warning sign on a pole and call it a day. Viva ANC!
Nothing will change...a failed state.
DA run areas not shown here, I wonder why?? Maybe because the roads are in pretty good shape thanks to proper governance!
And Khayelitsha, and the flats? All neglected under DA
@@augustineminimbi5668 those areas are from 29 years of ANC failure! Education failure being no 1! If you are not educated you can't work or create a business and you will likely be poor. Failure in housing, health care, policing, employment policies, roads and transport! All ANC failures. Don't expect the city mayor to fix National Government failures! Wake up!
@@augustineminimbi5668 actually your lieing too! Majority of their budget goes to these areas despite the fact they don't PAY rates or taxes!
between Wolmaransstad & Schweizer reneke North West province
Other countries take a insurance bond from mines .The bond will be used to fix the roads used by the mines . Every year they will assess the maintenance and money left . If at any given financial year the maintenance was zero the companies does not need to top up the bond. If maintenance was done and what eve money is left the mine then need to top the bond to its agreed amount. It can be implemented by our government “ BUT “
Just remember all that is bad in SA is because unless the ANC cadres profit directly it won't be done the ANC has utter disregard for the South African people. The treasury is an ATM for them they are evil and have no shame voting them out is the only way forward but won't happen. SA is doomed even if the ANC is voted out because they may not leave we are in for unbelievable political turmoil on the back of economic turmoil and so on. If you are able to leave do so if not brace yourself for worse
Where I’m from…we have a saying: “If you are driving in a straight manner…you my friend…are drunk driving” 😩😔
Sad thing is if you try to fix potholes in your area, you het fined by the municipality
Do it without bragging or social media....then no-one will know
keep voting ANC, VIVA ANC VIVA STURGGLE, VIVA SOUTH AFRICA
The roads to Nkandla is well maintained. 😂😂😂
Luckhof will also be a nice candidate
Bloemfontein main road into the town from all sides are actually total danger to any family and car
I’m in shock that they are calling some of those things roadways: e.g., the “R53.”😮
