Hey scotty, ive owned 8 of these cars, and i bought 3 of em in the last 2 years. Epa mileage is not as advertized. Highway mpg in nebraska wyoming highway sure 28, otherwise highway is 21, 23 mpg best. Local 13 to 15 mpg. The 1979-1991 grand marquis with 302 (5.0) have less horsepower, and less mpg. My 1989 GM, I get 17 mpg "local highway" could probably get more in kansas highway. My 2000 GM (with 190k miles) and 2008 GM (with 60k miles), highway mileage about the same 15 local and 20/21 highway. The 4.6 v8 and transmission is far more reliable, durable, and longet lasting than 302 (5.0) and AOD transmission, i like both 79 box and 98 aeros theyre workhorse vehicles with plenty of room for DIY mechanic. Spark plugs. Coil packs, belts, alternator, starter , water pump accessible for repair and not too complicated.
The worst decision Ford ever made was to discontinue the Crown Vic, Grand Marquis & Town Car. These boat sized, body on frame, unkilled modular V8 will go on till Jesus comes back. With regular maintenance...it will last you a lifetime. As an owner of a 2005 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, these cars are GOLDEN. I chose it over a new car. As of December 2022, I now own a 2011 Crown Victoria LX, the 05 was totaled.
Yeah for sure! Hell, I’m a Japanese car guy and I don’t even own a panther platform vehicle, but even I have to admit that those cars are some of the best vehicles out there, even today!
I have a 2011 P7B, ex patrol car with 110k miles and a whopping 8500 idle hours. The thing is a beast. I baby it now cuz I know it had a rough life, but I'm not concerned about it anyway. I know it can take more abuse if necessary.
@@samanthadavenport9513 If you know what you are doing, It won't take much longer than 20 minutes. The spark plugs on these cars are a breeze. They are literally on top of the engine in plain sight. the 4 spark plugs on the left side you can work on immediately. To get the 4 spark plugs on the right, you need to remove the air intake which itself is very easy and can be done in a minute or so.
@@gelf6303 he is talking about the popcorn plugs! Not a bad idea to see a professional to get it fixed. Keep the plugs tight and maybe they won't champagne cork outa there.
@Rvqsx - agreed my friend. My family and I always bought Fords. I hope they return to building these cars that would survive going to hell and back once again, but sadly, now it's about getting you into a new one every 3-5 years. No reason to make them last long anymore.
Mine is a white 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis GS. It was my grandmother’s car until she could no longer able to drive it. Since I have ownership over the vehicle, this beauty is still alive with 111k miles on it as of today. Before I owned the car, my family had to take turns with it for going on road trips to doctor visits, and my grandmother didn’t care if they borrowed it. The vehicle at the time had 90,315 miles on it when I first started to own it. Now, as of today it has 111,134 miles. My grandmother did tell me if I ever needed a car, I could have hers. Well, here I am today with her vehicle for going on almost 3 years into ownership. I love the vehicle and my grandmother too.
The seat electrically goes in about 8 directions, but I could never find a comfortable spot, maybe because I'm fat and not too mobile. I don't know. But it has lasted me from 2005 until now, and that's better than anything else I've ever had except my 2003 Ford Ranger.
The Crown Vic, you could drive it through the swamp, you can drive it though a desert, you could drive it through a damn house. These things make a Camry blush with their reliability
@@tramr3203 I guess you might be right the V8 can take a beating I know your gas quality in the u.s. is much better than from where I am so that regulates your MPGs
@@nothing9271 Maybe with the 4 cylinder yeah... had a 2001 3.0L V6 Camry before I got my current 2011 Crown Vic P71 and I don't notice any difference in gas economy with the Vic than I did with the Camry. Crown Vics really aren't bad on gas unless you're doing burnouts and driving like a bat out of hell. Seems to be one of those things people who've never owned or experienced for themselves have regurgitated so much that it's become something they're falsely well known for. Very bizarre. Just about everyone that makes conversation with me about my car will ask if its bad on gas, and the obvious - if it was an actual police car. lol
This is my 3rd one. The first one I sold and the second was stolen. The one I have now has a sunroof. I love these cars! They're so easy to work on. They don't roll, they float. Very well built.
I’m in my 20s and I have always appreciated older cars. I bought a 2003 Grand Marquis w/ 80k from a grandpa and its been a dream so far. Not going to get me any speeding tickets but its been a reliable, smooth and spacious ride.
One of the reasons why I love scotty's channel so much is his philosophy on cars is similar to mine. I don't care about excess technology, sportiness(though it can be fun to have), or flare but rather a machine that is simple, subdued, and reliable. An old skool car that focuses on actual comfort, sturdiness, and reliability opposed to the "cool factor" which as a fad can quickly wear off.
Scotty, I've have watch your videos since I was 14 years old. You've helped me to gain my knowledge and also assist in getting my ASE masters certification. I look forward to all your new videos. I hope one day you see this so you know your knowledge is being passed on to the younger generation of mechanics
I read a lot about this panther platform and the durability of this car, so a year and a half ago I bought a 2005 GMLS from an older couple. It now has 92,000. Runs like a top no leaks no nothin. Just great reliabilty and comfort. So far, in 50+ years of driving this is one of the best I have ever owned. They are still fairly plentiful. Not a spot of rust, paint in excellent shape A really great car. Thanks Scotty!
I had a 2009 Grand Marquis.. drove it for 10 years.. was truly one of the best cars I ever owned! Traded it in for 2019 Lincoln Nautilus.. a HUNK OF SH*T! There's nothing like the power of a 4.6 liter V-8 engine, which my Mercury had, smooth as silk. This Nautilus has a 2.0T - again.. a PoS! .. oh well.. lesson learned.
Have a similar car and just replaced the original engine belt more out of unease than play and that original belt had 306,000 miles on to. No new car could ever do that
i have a 2010 model and i absolutely LOVE it. It has high milage though around 216,000 but still runs like a dream. Will not trade it until it completely dies.
you could keep that thing running forever if you want. i would i have an 05, only 103000 right now. i wish i had a newer one. 05 is not the best year but at least its one of the newer ones with the upgraded parts
I just got a 2000 grand marquis 2 days ago.. made the decision because of this videos.. i got it for 2k with 140k miles.. the car is in great shape.. i already took it to the road for 4 hours and man.. i rides like new.. i love it.. thanks for the recommendations scotty
Owned 3 Crown Vic's, drove plenty of them when I worked security and I just picked up a 2007 Grand Marquis LS with 68K original miles from the original owner. Best perform ever.
I used to buy every old Cab where I worked and part them out . At times I would get 300 for the frame , now a lot of Hot Rodders are using the 03's and up for the front section of the Panther frame because of the Rack and Pinion steering .
@@timothyantoine914 yeah that's a great platform to build a street stock race car or something like that they don't make them like that anymore but that's what you would want for the Saturday night Roundy rounds
@@timothyantoine914 where I live in Florida this guy named Cletus has a UA-cam channel where he has turned the DeSoto Speedway in Sarasota into his own little playground and he brought up every one of those cars in our area you beat up on the racetrack and although I hated to see my selection go it was enjoyable to watch them race they are on UA-cam the cleetus McFarland Channel and they have fixed that track up and made it something special you can check them out on UA-cam you won't regret it it's a lot of fun watching them take 50 of those cars and beating them around a half mile oval
I love my 2004. It has 254k miles and I still smile when I go gas to the floor. The 275lbs of torque is just enough to put a smile on my face. Leather seats with the couch front seats, couldn't have asked for a better first car.
I bought an '04 with 38k miles last year for $5,500.00. Love it! Having issues with the gadgets. Just found out the headlight module was recalled and Ford sent us a letter saying they'll replace it for free and it has fixed the same issues for other owners. Definitely a great buy!
When I asked him if my car here was worth making a video out of he was really interested because I bought it after watching his "cars that go 300,000 miles or more" video. I get a lot of compliments from a lot of teachers at my school since most of them are older for driving around in it lol
Speaking of the trunk, I was told that it is the largest in the auto industry. I believe it. We had two and a half bodies in it, and room to spare for their guns, ammo, and one ho.
Not quite. The 2005-07 Five-Hundred and the 2008-09 Taurus has a 21 cu. ft. trunk. The Crown Vic and Marquis have a 20.6 cu. ft. trunk. However, the Vic and Marquis has one cubic foot more total.
I bought one of these pretty much because of this video. It wasn't hard to find one. I just looked around a little bit and found a pretty nice one. I bought a 2004 with 65,500 miles on it in really great condition (a few dings, but big deal) for $5,000. I'm really happy with it. The car is so nice I'm hoping to get 20+ years out of it. Thanks Scotty.
I am on my maiden voyage… I watched this video about a month ago… found one and bought it with 64k on the odometer!!! Great car so far… knock on the wood grain!!!
Could not agree with Scotty more. I and my family have owned many of these. I have a 2005 Lincoln Town Car Signature L that I will never let go. I love working on it doing the easy and simple maintenance. My son has my prior auto, now with more than 300K miles. Still runs smoothly and reliably. Congrats, Noah! Happy to hear you will keep it original. It is a classic!
Mine just passed 350,000 miles this month. If I had known it would of lasted so long I would of taken much better care of it. I’ve not taken care of mine at all 😢🤣🤣
Here is two things I learned when I owned mine. 1.The traction control button is in glove comparment 2. A 75 shot of nos is a essential for good passing power.
I got a 2003 for free when in-laws quit driving 6 and half years ago just turned 149.000 last Saturday. Put in a remanufactored trans at 137.000 for 2 grand. Love this Grand Marc.
I picked up a Black 2009 P71 back in March with only 65,000 miles. Sitting at 72,000 miles and the conventional oil isn’t even dirty yet! (Since I got it) The handling is actually surprisingly good. Rides amazing. Putting a wheel with cruise control buttons in it this weekend
I've got an '06 Grand Marquis with 66K on it. Unbelievable car. Best car for the money hands down!! I bought it from a Funeral Home for 1,500 when the were updating their fleet. If you need an extra car? Look no further.
Be proud of it! I'm proud of mine that's in this video here and I have no plans to soup it up like many have said on here. I take better care of my stuff than my parents do as far as I'm concerned. A maintenance log and everything.
My mom has a 96 that was “used and abused”. It has definitely seen better days and can still keep on going. It served its purpose. It has 182,000 miles on it and still packs a punch. You’d have to see it to believe it. It’s not currently driving because the brake lines rotted. I like the 96 model year better because it has all the same things, but it looks different. The taillights have a more linear shape, the emblems are italicized, the seats are more bench like, more chrome, and the dash lights up in this teal turquoise color.
So a great car, my friend purchased a used 2005 Crown Vic for $1500 with almost 200K miles on it and ran that thing for over 3 years with new issues. Super smooth ride and powerful engine, making a car that lasts with simple old school tech is the way to go.
I love driving it, I was surprised myself when I saw it had a digital dash on it when I looked at it. Scotty told me that the older people much prefer the analog old school over the digital but me being the teenager with this car I like it more
I love my 2005 grand marquis. So comfortable and smooth, gets great mileage, tons of trunk space. Never had any issues with the vehicle other than the LCM. Regular maintenance. It’s at 156,000 k going strong
Trouble is we didn't have people like you and the internet to tell us what's the best cars around.people are still buying bad cars even though they have the internet. HOW hard is it to look see. Thanks, Scotty.
General Zod Thank you General.. usually I wash the car regularly in winter season preventing and salty slug build up or salt sticking to the body and underbody ..
I’m a retired cop 👮♀️. I started driving the box edition on duty in 1988. These cars are extremely durable! I only blew up a 4.6 engine once . It was 5 degrees out this morning & I had to go help a fellow officer in distress. Car sat all night and was cold 🥶. I started that Vic up and in seconds I was going 100 MPH to help out my buddy with a bad guy several miles away. The engine smelled like melted metal when I finally got to him. A week later the engine blew up! Only engine I ever blew up! 4.6 tough as nails !
Just another perk you can afford to have it detailed and if it's clean and pretty the women don't mind getting naked in it that's for sure I've had my share of DNA and no complaints plenty of room I'm almost 60 and I can lay in the backseat with my head on the pillow and my legs stretched out and sleep comfortably I've done it before on road trips and that is nice you don't realize you need it until you need it and then you're glad you have it
These actually can get that type of mileage on the highway.... I drove my 2004 Vic almost 90 miles a day for two years to one job, with highway driving being about 75% of the way. I averaged about 23-24 mpg a tank and could get upwards of 320 miles out of a tank easily. The little city driving I did greatly brought down the average of the highway mileage it was getting, but it had to be up there in the 26-28 mpg. They are extremely reliable with just regular maintenance - with the exception of rusting easily around wheel wells and exhaust manifolds, and intake manifolds are prone to cracking and leaking. I had to replace the intake on mine at around 160k miles but part was not expensive and wasn't hard to do.
160k intake replace! Wow! That car wouldn't break enough to keep me busy. Id just have to replace parts for the heck of it. That's why I have a BMW. Reliability for needing repaired :)
Just purchased a 97 with 82k and it runs great! Previous owner kept record of every service for 20 years, so I’m glad I could get my hands on one of those. Best of both worlds with this one and an MX-5 for great fun.
I owned a chevy, nissan, iffinity, and Hyundai in my life. I used to dish on ford as a kid and made fun of it. Found a 2008 mercury grand marques at a dealership. Got it and i love it. I plan to own this car the rest of my life and im 21 years old.
I got a 2011 Grand Marquis from a family member, bought it for $3k. It has 150k miles and it’s pretty good. It’s my first car, I’m 16 and just got my permit. I plan to be like an old person and keep it as long as possible. Maybe decades! Not sure. Those things last forever and I really maintain it well by myself.
I just bought a 2004 Lincoln Town Car with only 4400 miles on the clock - not 44,000 but 4400! I paid a fair price for it, but it's literally a 16 year old NEW car! Thing is immaculate and incredibly comfortable! Everything Scotty says about these Panther platform cars is correct. They are super well built!
Mustang's and Fusions? No, more like taurus, expedition, f series, explorer, five hundred (basically a taurus). I don't think mustang's or fusions are built that good. They may be reliable, but they're not built as good as a taurus or explorer.
The only thing I've got a problem with is they came with plastic intakes so after a hundred fifty thousand miles the intake would explode so you can get aftermarket performance parts because of the same motor as a fox body mustang Ford 4.6 motor so if you replace the intake with aluminum intake you be all good
The coolant crossover passage that "exploded" was plastic early on. There was a recall to replace them with the updated manifold. Most people ignored the recall and waited until it expired before wanting to do anything about it. But you are right. An all aluminum intake manifold is best.
@@rays7437 Mine with the updated manifold still had the manifold leak. The dealer couldn't get a new one anymore (this was for a 96 so before the PI heads) so we had to try aftermarket options and junked the car after the second $250 manifold failed to seal properly. Also had an 06 which was supposed to no have the timing chain problems of the 00-04 engines but around 100K miles developed severe chain rattle so we offloaded that car too. IMO, as someone who has owned plenty of other cars, there's not a ton special about these, they weren't especially comfortable (older American cars had better seats and most any luxury car rides better except performance-oriented stuff) or powerful (that and the transmission sucks even with the J-mod because it has such wide ratios), reliability was maybe better than average but it's no Lexus. Both of ours were meticulously maintained using only Ford parts when possible and always had something wrong. I think the Crown Vics, especially the P71s would be better due to more power from the getgo (in the P71) and manual climate control, the automatic climate control was always failing on both of ours.
I own a 2001 Gran Marquis and it looks almost as good as this one. I have 90,000 miles on it and I just replaced the air shocks on it after 19 years. The air conditioning still works perfect AND I HAVE NEVER ONCE RECHARGED IT. I always refer to it as a poor man's Lincoln. Our family bought it new and I absolutely love it. Written in March 2020.
When I was in high school, one thing that I always looked forward to, was when my uncle Bill would get a new Town Car every 2 years. He’s let me take them for a spin. Naturally, they become my dream car. I was fortunate to pick up an 08’ Signature Limited, a few months ago, with 56k on the clock. I have driven just about every kind of car imaginable, but my Lincoln is the one car that I always feel like I’m experiencing for the first time, every time I start it.
Hi Scotty from Toronto (close to York University). I’m an old fart retired from the Ford St. Thomas Assembly plant where every Grand Marquis and Crown Vic was built. Last one was in Oct 2011 and look at all the Vics still in police service everywhere. Weren’t perfect but built like tanks. One of Ford’s many silly decisions. Keep the great videos coming Scotty.
I had a 2009 Grand Marquis.. drove it for 10 years.. was truly one of the best cars I ever owned! Traded it in for 2019 Lincoln Nautilus.. a HUNK OF SH*T! There's nothing like the power of a 4.6 liter V-8 engine, which my Mercury had, smooth as silk - the whole car was solid like a tank! This Nautilus has a 2.0T - again.. a PoS! .. oh well.. lesson learned.
Just got a 2005 from my brother 281k. Still looking good, only major thing done was a A/C system rebuild. Steering and suspension really tight. No leaks anywhere. Love it.
All the three sister cars built on the Panther platform - Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car were extremely sturdy, reliable, high performance and beautiful. Ford should not have stopped their production.
i love these things, I've had 4 and never had a engine or transmission to fail and i'm the type of person who knows how to use a car racking up thousands and thousands of miles a year
I do mechanic work and I must say, this guy is always right on the money, love listening to Scotty give advice! I only wish most mechanics were like Scotty. "You Go Boy"😊
A lot depends on what qualifies as an "American Car", since many foreign manufacturers have U.S. manufacturing plants, and many of our so-called "American Cars" are actually made in Canada.
I just got a 2008 that was extremely well taken care of, all the electronics work, super clean with 125k miles and only 4700 out the door. Im in love with it. Super classy car, the first car I ever looked at buying was a grand marquis
I bought a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria P71 (Police Interceptor) It was a detectives car and was treated extremely well. It has only 87000 original miles on the odometer. Got it for $900 from auction. Havent had any problems with it at all. Living in the rust belt it has no major rust at all! I love it!!!
I am the proud owner of a 1981 Ford LTD Crown Victoria, we've had it since 1989 and it has never let us down, my dad began having the idea of selling it, and then I did some maintenance on it, and it's been my daily driver under my ownership for the last 2 years and I enjoy every second behind that wheel
Darn that kid is lucky to get this car, it's basically new. I really really hope this kid knows what he got and appreciates it... and doesn't run it into the ground. Man, I'd buy that car in a heartbeat.
Scotty I have to say that these GMs were the best used cars ever. The first owners were older people that took pride in their car and were fanatics with proper maintenance. I would keep my eyes open for one that was about 5 years old and buy it for half of original price, then put on another 100,000 miles with very little cost! Never ever stopped for a speeding ticket.
I agree with you totally on your opinion of the Mercury Marquis. I own a 2010 Marquis with 100K miles. When I bought this car 8 years ago, I was shopping for a used Lincoln Town Car. Unable to find one in decent shape, I found this Merc instead. It was equipped much like the Lincoln, and even looked like one. My other car is a restored 1979 Lincoln Town Coupe. Both cars drive very much alike. Ford made a serious mistake when it quit building these cars.
I am the proud keeper of my parents 2005 Crown Vic with about 56k miles. Smooth ride. Pirouettes into parking spots like no other. Can be amazingly quick for a heavy vehicle (not as quick as my 2006 Altima 3.5 with manual trans, but still, satisfying). Always reliable.
This is one of the best car here in KSA since 99 tell the last model of crown vectoria . They are almost maintenance free. Super strong engine n gearbox with very cold AC. Cheap spare parts n easy to maintain.
SCOTTY!!!! Thank you so much!! I just bought an 01 grand marquis with 97k miles for $3500.00 from the original owner!! VA car no rust and it drives like a dream!!
And those Chinese and Mexican workers are severely underpaid and overworked. Back in the day, car manufacturers treated their employees better. Even Scotty says: "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys".
Just purchased a 2008 with 17,000 miles. LS with leather. Had original tires. Bought from original owner. I needed a 2nd car that was inexpensive and dependable. Replaced tires, belt and hoses along with power steering pump sensor. Nicest car I have ever owned in my 40 years of driving.
The Panther platform is one of the best sedans ever made period. I cannot think of any car today which is as robust as this series. The LS sport and Marauder are good options for those of us who want more performance and they handle way better.

Heater core....1 day....like most cars

They are literally on top of the engine in plain sight. the 4 spark plugs on the left side you can work on immediately. To get the 4 spark plugs on the right, you need to remove the air intake which itself is very easy and can be done in a minute or so.

Elwood Gizmo not too mention the number of Mexicans you can put in that trunk and smuggle across the border!
Thought the park avenues from the early 90's had bigger trunks
Not quite. The 2005-07 Five-Hundred and the 2008-09 Taurus has a 21 cu. ft. trunk. The Crown Vic and Marquis have a 20.6 cu. ft. trunk. However, the Vic and Marquis has one cubic foot more total.

Chrysler is now controlled by FIAT, of Italy.
The times, they are a-changin' !
Just bought a 2004 with 90,000 miles for $4, 000! I am thrilled!! What a comfortable ride!!!
What condition ?
@@thaddmidd3359 Pretty good condition! Have put around 7K miles on it and it’s going and going. :)
Awesome video just bought a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria LX with 177.00 Km on it a month ago, great car no rust on it, a real car.
I just got a 2008 that was extremely well taken care of, all the electronics work, super clean with 125k miles and only 4700 out the door. Im in love with it. Super classy car, the first car I ever looked at buying was a grand marquis
Bring back the old days🔥
Your killing it Scotty!
One of my favorite cars in the world, especially the Marader
When Scotty gets behind the wheel of this boat, I expect him to say THE PLANE ! THE PLANE !
Your good friend Vinny in good old Fla.
I've had an 02 grand marq since 2014 it's been my best car still driving all these kids around with 260k.
Golly If you can, find one like that for me, we take a little old lady to church on Sunday!!! WOW, I was second!!
Loving my 2011 Crown Victoria with the 4.6L .. Runs like a New One ..
Beautiful car, excellent purchase! It really surprised me the working space in the engine, that is really nice!
Electric radiator fans free up space.
Wow I want that car....is nice...love the cars made in the 90s....
They used to build them US and Canada with locally made parts, now it is all made in China or Mexico
And those Chinese and Mexican workers are severely underpaid and overworked. Back in the day, car manufacturers treated their employees better.
Even Scotty says: "If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys".
You get what you paid...
Covid -19 has a lot of people thinking about trade with China . Bring production back to North America and make these cars again .
Chevy makes trucks in Mexico, same with Toyota's Tacoma (as of now on, and forever.)
