Thanks for the encouragement Jeff, I do miss driving the 'ol girl. Hoping to get her back on the road again soon, and complete this semi-overland build! You'll see more of this car, guaranteed.
Hello, thanks for the video. Fellow 325i owner. Theres a slight knocking sound on the engine, a system too lean misfire (checked by code) and today i looked under the head gasket top and there was slight milky residue from the water mixing. Unfor The condensation in the car is bad too on the windows but with some rain x i was able to make it slightly more bearable. I would love some help on see what would be the best option for me at this point. Thank you!!
Why do you think your head gasket failed. Maybe a previous overheat or just wear and tear, from what I Under head gaskets are fairly uncommon or non existing for m54 that have not been overheated
my car been sittin and all i been doing is warming up and now it wont turn it cranks then loud air coming out the left side of the engine ..sounds like bad misfire to when it turns on
My BMW 1 series E87 has started loosing coolant a few days ago. I topped it up and it goes down within a few hrs. I dont have any brown sludge in the oil reservoir, but did notice some greyish smoke from the exhaust. Is it likely to be a head gasket issue ? Cheers
This is the exact thing that happened to my 430i b46 and I’m replacing the head gasket hopefully that will help me out the engine was running fine until that misfire and random coolant leak
I have a 19 x3 with the b46. I’m always loosing the smallest amount of coolant. Maybe 1 cup every 5k miles with no leak. My car has the slightest misfire at cold starts only but it’ll go away after about 5 seconds and no CEL. I’ve replaced the turbo coolant return line and water pump so far and I was also leaking oil from balance shaft end caps. Replaced those as well and no issues so far. Did you have coolant going into the cylinder? Also any smoke or particular smell? How much coolant were you loosing with the blown head gasket? Thanks and I hope you get your car running!
@ yea I had a bad cold start with white smoke losing coolant internally and yes it was in the cylinders I found a little coolant around the spark plug. Try a pressure test
@@mnanez11 what year and how many miles on your car? I don’t think it’s the head gasket because I have no white smoke or any smoke coming out the exhaust. Also no other symptoms of head gasket failure. Considering how little coolant I’m losing but still that coolant has to go somewhere and I’ve checked every hose and oil filter housing. Also my engine has never been overheated. Coolant temp stays around 110c or lower with oil temps around 95-100
@@RKSAINT then it probably isn’t that if you haven’t overheated It’s a2017 with 73k check your upper expansion hose and your connector piece under your intake manifold
I would be interested to see if it passes leak down and compression. I would think it doesnt with how much coolant was in that cylinder but it would be nice to know. Some cars I have worked on have had bad head gasket but havent failed compression/leak down. Thanks for the videos.
Hmm I don't think the diesel engines are known for headgasket failure, they operate at lower tempuratures so not as much heat cycling on the motor. But they have other issues instead, very different from the gas motors.
My 335i runs drives fine No overheating and What so ever, but Open today and Found Milky in the Oil so is it either Oil filter Housing or blown gasket?
I have a video on my channel on an easy clutch bleeding method! I swear it works great for me, but it's just one of the many ways to bleed the master/salve cylinders with fluid. Go check it out!
Did you have a massive coolant loss or just a little bit? Asking because sometimes on my 520d m47 the coolant level goes a bit down but nothing worrying tho and sometimes it's back to normal. I don't understand why
I also have a 520d m47 and my head gasket is blown. The symptoms is white smoke from the exhaust and water in the oil. Also check if there are bubbles on the coolant reservoir while the engine is running. Mine is also loosing coolant.
Okay. So this is pretty devastating to me. I don't know for sure. I have a 2009 328 IPM W and I have replaced my water pump. My thermostat lower radiator hose and it seems to be OK. But I'm losing coolant. I'm not getting a temperature reading that it is overheating. But something is going on and I'm wrecking my brain around all of it. Trying to find maybe a faulty hose thermostat. Of course, so if I want to find out if I have a bad head guessed it would okay. What should I do first to be indefinite if it is a bad guess get I know that underneath my car? A couple days ago I seen a water puddle and it wasn't A. It wasn't for my AC and also I noticed there was water in my one of my pipes. My one of the exhaust pipes, the back of the car, but not both of them. There was a puddle of water and one of them, and I wasn't sure why because it didn't rain or anything. Is that a possibility that I have? Bad head gasket
Sounds like a coolant leak, could be leaking close to the engine, and burning off before hitting the ground. Sometimes a pin-hole leak in the radiator is hard to find as well! Hope that helps and good luck 👍
Yes that was also happening to mine. Even the day after driving the car, I could release pressure when opening the expansion tank cap. It smelled like exhaust gas coming from the coolant. Good luck, hope you find your problem!
@@Rohan-fx3xz that what I did first Radiator and T-stat and water pump was replaced too , still having same issue. Some times it overheats when idle but as soon I start moving the temperature gets back to normal.
@@cooly350 if it's overheating only at idle and then temps go back to normal, then you have a faulty fan or a faulty fan switch that's not turning the fan on when it's hot. That may be why there's an increase in pressure.

Good luck. Fellow e53 manual owner here. Definitely worth the effort to fix, these are fun as heck to drive.

This was very helpful. I had everything you listed plus leaking oil and smelling burning oil inside the cabin of my 535xi. Thanks again!
What did you end up doing?
Man, that sucks. Glad to see more bmw vids tho. Can't wait to see the hg replacement. 😢

Whats that scanner you were using ? And is it a good scanner to have for an e39 ?

that blows. how many hours would you say it takes to replace a HG on a m54?
I think it has to be somewhere between 12-16 hours book time with a lift and all that, definitely not a 1 day job at home!
How you could prevent having that problem though ?
so when and how do you determine to do the headgasket or swap the motor

My M52B28 had exactly the same water leak on cylinder 3
Any update on the E61?
Is this also a big problem on the e90 diesel?

I'm pretty sure I'm losing coolant.....but I have no other symptoms....doesn't overheat....no rough idle or misfire....none of that
