You're so right. Misha himself had said in a con that they HAD to hobble Cas because he's obviously and undeniably more powerful than the Winchesters. If Cas got more screen time, they 'Monster of the Week' format would feel trivial because Cas can instantly solve the problem with a blink of an eyes(demons are terrified of angels, none of the monsters stand a chance. Cas is generally more empathetic too after recognizing how fucked up heaven is so the ghost issues would go over more smoothly). He is funnier, more compelling and just.....better for a story-telling purpose than the Winchester by s5-6.
The main story of s6 was dean and sam's brother drama and sam losing his soul but the background story was whole civil war in heaven.
SPN has a problem where it never wants to acknowledge that the brothers aren't as important as they think they are. The world doesn't revolve around them. Because of this, the characters never acknowledge it. Everything that exists around the brothers exist for their use.
They didn't want to bring Dean and Sam up to a higher level in terms of their function because that'd mean having to acknowledge that there are things bigger than the 'family business'. So they brought Cas down.
Cas's fall from angelhood is seen as romantic by shippers and later gets a canon romantic explanation but the initial reason for the fall wasn't because of feelings, or love, or anything from Cas's own desires. He fell because it makes things easier when telling the Dean & Sam story. Nothing can be more important than the brothers.
Not even an angel that defied heaven and practically invented free will.
The treatment of Cas is an indicator of a fundamental flaw in the SPN storytelling.
Thanks for this video. As a cas girl, it was really nice to see.

I get why, to a certain point. I understand they needed to because he wasn't originally a character that was supposed to stick around. If they had a character that could literally fix things with a snap of his fingers, the boys wouldn't have that struggle and conflict anymore. They had a magic fix. But it's the treatment and continued flagellation that bothers me. Continuing to tear him down.

I agree. Castiel really deserved better. The thing that bothered me the most was that Castiel killed his brothers for Sam and Dean. Why was his family relationship treated like it was less important? He knew his brothers longer than Dean and Sam had been alive.
I think that Castiel walking away from Dean should have been the last time we saw him. It would have let his story end with more dignity and he could have gotten a spin off now that the brother's story was over. A spin off where he gets over Dean, hunts monsters, and finds a new family that treats him with love and respect. Maybe gets a boyfriend. I wanted to see more of Claire and Castiel, more of Castiel and Jack, more of Castiel helping Angels discover freewill and find their place on earth, etc.
Instead, his story ends with a one-sided love confession, a journey into super hell, and a brief throw away mention in the finale.

Castiel was the best character. After everything, he deserved some type of acknowledgement of he feelings for Dean.....he deserved something back from Dean and from Sam. He told them both that he loved them, yet was misused and mistreated. Sam and Dean never put Cas first....

Castiel is my favourite character, and probably the reason I have been watching supernatural all along (along other characters, that's for sure). Supernatural had SO MUCH potential to be a perfect show. It still is my favourite, but it has many flaws. And when I found this video... I had no words. Thank you so much for verbalizing every though that I have been having for the last three months. Thank you for standing up to Cas. Thank you for letting others know how abused, mistreated and unloved Cas was. I wish I could be there with him.
That is why I need a reboot so badly. Not only because I want supernatural to continue (because I genuinely love the show), but because I need explicitly verbalized justice for Cas. I need to see that at least someone loves him. Well, thank god he has Jack. I need a reboot because I need Cas to be genuinely happy and not get thrown to superhell and be forgotten by your so called "love ones" (yes I'm looking at you, Dean and Sam). Who agrees with me?

This video is so validating. You put into words everything I've been feeling about the show/finale/the treatment of Cas. I can't seem to get over this show, every time I think about it I'm overwhelming by feelings of frustration and betrayal. You're exactly right--after years and years of Cas being mistreated, we still got no closure. I'm a huge Destiel fan, and after S15 ep 18 I thought we would get some bittersweet ending and maybe reciprocation on Dean's side. But then the writers made Dean so nonchalant about it, Cas's confession was brushed off, and Dean barely cared when he found out that Cas had been resurrected. That's what really solidified for me that the writers will simply never respect Cas, whether it's related to Destiel or not, they will always ignore him, put him down, and make him lesser in comparison to the brothers. It hurts so much. I'm just grateful to Misha for doing everything he could with this character. (Thank you so much for making this video, your analysis was perfect

You are so right throughout the series castiel was treated like garbage the writers basically tried to ruin his character by making him a villain and killing him off in season 7 because the producers didn't like the fact that he was more popular than the Winchester's that was such a bad and stupid decision that Sarah gamble made
And in the last two seasons he was put through the ringer being viciously beaten by a bunch of demons and then dean treating him like trash after Jack killed mary was so wrong and the hole break up scene in season 15 was so lame plus their was no closure between castiel and dean about the confession scene in 15 x 18 in the finale 🤯😬😠😡🤬😢

FACTS and nothing but FACTS! My boy deserved better I swear... Like literally fans also treat Castiel horrible as well (mostly newer fans). The people who immediately dislike anybody who isn't on the side of the mains or are 'weak' and makes mistakes. I really dislike those types of people if I'm being honest. It stops people from seeing his potential and just amazingness and it really saddens me. Because sometimes people judge a character by their supposed 'use' and since the writers treat his character like he's expendable, people are gonna think that he is... Which is simply a bunch of bullshit.
Also Meg and Jack are the only ones who treated him well if I'm honest. Yes, Meg also saw him as a protection/tool but she genuinely did love him I believe and she did treat him pretty well unlike the others. And of course Jack treated him well. It breaks my heart that Castiel had to deal with the loss of a child pretty much by himself, the Winchesters knew how Castiel saw Jack as a son and everything.
I feel like I will always love Supernatural though, one reason being Castiel of course lol. The other would be the story and just the fact that this show was something me and my mom loved. We both loved the show and would watch old and new episodes together. I still think season 1-5 were a masterpiece and will always keep the good memories of the characters. Don't know if I can ever forget the bull crap they've pulled with Cas but I can't let his character nor the memories go that's for sure.
Sorry for getting a bit emotional, Castiel is just a character I relate a lot to and genuinely love. Amazing video!

  • @MsKnowItAll26

This video is so true. The writers really didn’t understand how to write support characters, even important ones like Cas. And didn’t seem to understand that it was at the detriment of the show and Sam and Deans characters. It made the brothers look heartless and less relatable. And every time they introduced a new character I just ended up rolling my eyes because there was zero point in getting attached to them. Rather than exploring a relationship that was entirely co-dependant and have the brothers learning to expand their worldview and letting others in, it just kept hitting the reset button to it being all about them again.
I’d been saying since season 6 that they should have made Cas human (or at least made him less powerful) and be fully a part of the story and introduced a fourth person for Sam’s character to bounce off of that would have evened the dynamic out. Oh well I can dream.

Sometimes Dean's pattern reads as abused victim to abuser - his story almost mirrors Castiel's arc from an obedient soldier with an absent, neglectful father to free will but the accumulated damage warps him into an angry simulation of his father.
In his anger, he strikes out frequently at others, especially Jack and Castiel. Dean is so desperate in season 15 to kill Chuck, its like his last attempt to regain freedom and he pursues it to the exclusion of almost everything else.
His ending is a tragedy as he ends up circling back to the beginning and ends his life in the same bloody way to which he always resigned himself. His journey has been incredible but I wish he had been able to finish his fight for freedom.

Thank you for this video. I am not a supernatural fan, I have never watched an episode. I got interested in the show because of a video I watched about queer baiting. After watching many destiel and Castiel videos, something started to bother me. I witness this powerful Angel of the Lord being over the seasons being reduced to nothing. How many times did I hear Cas say, i'm sorry Dean , I thought I was doing the right thing. And I started noticing that everytime there was a fight and Cas wanted to jump in, Dean would always try to push him back, some would say Dean is protective and find it sweet. I call that hobbling. Castiel is an angel he is more powerful than Dean will ever be. There is that scene in season 12, where Cas meets Isham at a diner's, and Dean storms in though Cas asks him not to meddle. Some would look at the scene and think haha, but I, maybe I'm reading too much, found this behavior on Dean's part, disrespectful. Sometimes I feel like Dean behaved like a stalker. Cas Lost his memory, he becomes emmanual, Steve, Clarence, Here comes Dean. Can't he just let the Guy be. I hate the confession scene because after all Castiel sacrificed for the brothers he deserved better. I understand that it was once again about saving Dean. But I believe that Castiels true happiness would have been to get his wings back. Too me agency is more important than any kind of relationship. And really if anyone deserved to hear I love you, it was Castiel from Dean. Castiel said Dean changed him, but did Dean change thanks to Castiel, did he finally deal with his anger issues for example. This is why I don't like Destiel, because I find the relationship very one-sided. At the end what did Dean give to Castiel, nothing.. People ship Destiel, and there is nothing wrong with it. But if Dean and Cas were real life people, they would find the relationship unhealthy. So when People cheer at that confession scene, I find them quite desperate, So any crumbs will do?
    Just my two cents.

This video put exactly what I've been thinking into words, I'm going to try to keep this short so it's not just a big tangent, but ultimately I'm just upset that Cas gives so much of himself for the Winchesters and they give him nothing in return. The fandom will defend their shitty behavior towards Castiel because of their trauma which yes, is somewhat true, but your mental health isn't an excuse to treat anyone badly. Throughout the show they ignore Castiel's struggles and just demand that he be at their disposal whenever possible. They do care about him, but sometimes it's painful to watch because they almost treat him like he's not a being at all. Just something for them to rely on whenever they don't have any options or ideas.
