Can we all agree Yukina saved Hiei's character. The thing about outcast characters like Hiei who usually are distant from most of the cast is they only work if they have someone close to them that they desire to protect. Without Yukina Hiei would just be a stubborn rebel who seeks powers.
I love how he said his impulse to kill faded when he finally found the ice apparitions again. It just showed how he didn't bother to finally take his revenge because he knew deep down they were perverse and heartless. He showed rie (the girl who threw him off the cliff) that they were wrong about him and that they can just spend eternity in a frozen wasteland while he leaves to find purpose in his life.
The last attack we see Hiei throw is done to destroy a symbol of subjugation another is wearing. The next time you see him, he is protecting humans and returning them out of demon world while working along side his rival from the Dark Tournament arch. The end of his journey is him seeking a purpose greater than violence being the only way froward
12:24 Hiei let's Kuwabara date his sister, which is about the highest level of trust you can have for a friend. They have a very Zoro/Sanji relationship. Hiei breaking someone else's chains is a great ending for him. He was once chained by his hate and past, and his friends broke those chains. Now he has grown and is doing it for others. He goes from petulant and angry, to patient and empathetic. One hell of a change.
I like to think Hiei never uses his Jaganshji form after his first appearance because he wants everyone to know he's not taking things seriously. Hiei puts a lot of time and effort into projecting an aura of aloofness, like he's above all the petty concerns of those around him. Yusuke humbling him in their first fight was devastating to his ego, so now he refuses to use the power-up so that Yusuke will always know that everything he accomplished from that point forward was done with one hand tied behind his back.
Hiei is an incredibly deep and complex character for sure, It was all thanks to his backstory that really expressed this. it's actually my favorite backstory of all time and it was very much worth waiting for in the Three Kings Arc. I do need to address that the scene where Hiei destroys the Chapter Black tape is anime only. In the manga he keeps the tape and it's much more ambiguous in regards if it will have an effect on him in the future. Other than that, amazing video. Hiei is my favorite type of character and is my favorite of all time. Sasuke is also a favorite of mine, he successfully adapted the Hiei qualities.
Another Ciple dubb 🔥 I love how simple MANY of the yu yu characters are while still being gripping with their personalities and development. The way Togashi writes them really does just make you feel close to them and pick up on all the little reactions and interactions along the way. It creates depth in a simple to understand character. You do a good job of pointing out the mechanics Togashi uses to accomplish this with character traits/quirks and their motivations. 👊🏼
A great video about Hiei's overall character arc throughout the series. Hiei's backstory involving the ice apparitions really is tragic, and ultimately cements his outcast status, but I think that his outcast status starts to change with his connections to Kurama, Yusuke, Yukina, Mukuro, and even Kuwabara to an extent.
If I had to sum Hiei up, he longs for his family, but after everything he's done he feels unworthy of them. He's got his "found family" in the form of Team Urameshi, but they're not really the family he's looking for. I am satisfied with the end we got, which wasn't a resolution to all his problems, but at least an important step: Hiei is starting to process the idea that he's worthy of companionship. Not just in a fighting team like with Urameshi, but with a partner in Mukuro, and when he's ready, revealing his identity to Yukina. Like, the ending of "Better Call Saul": I feel Jimmy McGill's deepest wish was always to be worthy of self-respect, and he could gain that only by taking responsibility for his actions. That's what he finally did in that court room, and while it didn't solve all his problems, it at least put him on the right road. Sometimes that's enough of an ending.
About Hiei's first appearance where he was turning people into demons, let me take a swing at that. When a person feels they're worthless, they'll do things in keeping with their feelings of worthlessness. It could well be that's all that motivated Hiei: he was feeling particularly rotten about himself and decided to do something particularly rotten. A human might pick a stupid fight in a bar; Hiei stole an artifact and turned humans into demons.
It’s clear for me that Hiei ends in a romance with Mukuro. The sister thing is left wide open for him to talk to her when he sees fit. He seems happy at the end as all other characters.
tbh i don't think it's very surprising that Hiei wasn't originally intended to be a main character lol, he's a completely different character with completely different powers in his first appearance, on my first watch, I found it pretty obvious that he was a one-off antagonist who Togashi decided to recycle.
Sparing bui was something hiei gained through power he was not just expressing mercy he was exercising his own freedom. That is why he flips out when he finds out toguro and himself are still B tiers.

Imo Hiei is the Perfect Dueterogonist In any series.The Idea of an outcast poetically, Conceptually and Literally and finding a Connection is just so compelling and So Amazing and Hiei.And Hiei having respect for Yusuke for both being similar in their own ways.

Hiei and Kuwabara's relationship is definitely played for laughs, but I can think of 3 moments that solidify their friendship in my eyes -When Hiei agrees to train Kuwabara prior to the tournament with Toguro. I'm sure he enjoyed all the physical punishment he got to do, lol -A little exchange between the two after Yusuke gets kidnapped Kuwabara: Time to kick some tail! Hiei: Hahahahahaha!!! Kuwabara: Shut up, short legs! That is the kind of exchange only friends would do, lol -In the last arc, prior to the tournament starting, Hiei and Yusuke talk about the possibility of fighting each other and Yusuke makes fun of him, to which Hiei replies "You make me miss Kuwabara". He said so sarcastically, but it's funny that he had him in his thoughts in the first place For someone who claims to hate Kuwabara and constantly tries to isolate himself from others, he certainly gets a lot of pleasure out of teasing him. He definitely enjoys his company, and it's heartwarming to see

Hiei is cool because indeed he is the result of a character not being intended to be the main cast actually making it so well that he is a fan favorite. This is similar to making a story about x and having y in it but halfway through the mangaka realizes y is way more popular so x becomes a background loser and y is now MC and the sales explodes. This is not the case in YYH but you get the point sometimes happy mistakes happens. Same shit as Snape and Itachi being intended to be villains but then they end up magnificient bastards good guys all along and are GOAT.
