I used to follow boxing pretty hardcore. Its hard to be a boxing fan now. The fights you want to see take a decade to make. Too much Cherry Picking and fight delaying.
Michael Nunn was so talented, had a great career, two division champion, but he could have had a better career if he really dedicated himself. He was right there he just need to take it just a little bit more serious.
Yall hate Larry because he did his job too well?? That's always been weird to me. You best believe if he carried Ali for the whole fight the new narrative would be that Holmes couldn't stop an old Ali. He was damned if he do damned if he don't. Yall should be mad at Ali team for putting him in there. Nobody says "take it easy on LeBron because he's old. Don't make him look bad. He's old but he still wants to play so only go half speed against him"
Holmes was Ali's sparring partner for years and didn't go pro until his later years, and probably because Ali told him to. Holmes did not want that fight and he was barely hurting him because Ali wasn't throwing any punches himself. I see most of yall don't remember that fight.
@@elijaharvinger1178 I believe Holmes gave him that fight to put money in his pocket. You could tell at times that fight was painful for Holmes. I don't think Ali threw 3 punches in that entire fight. It was almost like he had some kind of brain-lock. It's obvious that fighting style is directly from Ali too, and it's obvious that why Holmes and Cossell had the same type of relationship as he did Ali. Holmes was a great champ, man.
Imagine, he had 62 fights but only 4 losses and he had a tough competition. Most of the fighters from this period were tough as nails, not the softies we see now who claim to be the goats.
It’s part of being too obsessive as a sports fan why certain boxers get unnecessary hate. Berbick and Holmes beating Ali got them a lot of hate, De La Hoya beating Chavez got him a lot of hate, Lennox Lewis beating Mike Tyson got him a lot of hate. Realistically we know a lot of those guys were out of there prime/ addicted to drugs but imagine if the challengers had turned down those fights?! They would have still gotten hate and even worse they’d also get accused of “ducking.”
Just a Note. He started by giving his mother all the credit for raising him because his dad wasn't around. But gives the older males around the credit for keeping him alive. Mom did her part I'm sure but those men made him a world Champ for sure.
Feel bad for Holmes getting so much hate for fighting Ali, it was Ali who wanted the fight ,what was Holmes supposed to do?, roll over and let Ali beat him?.
oh so close to Nunn vs RJJ At LHW, never happened, that would've been GOAT competition for sure. His fight with Toney IMO he was winning, but JT went to fight mode & caught up Nunn at the end. Great boxer.
I remember him when I was like 13. Having only spent 1 year in the joint, I would hate to be him for 16 years. Not only did he fall from grace, but he in the joint and guaranteed he was tried more than usual. A celebrity and a boxer? Oh yea. He was tried and had to rumble more than once.
