Hi Lucy! I just found this video and was impressed. You really spent a lot of time comparing and making this video, thank you! I purchased a US copy for coloring and have it spiral bound to make it easier for coloring (I have a chronic illness which leaves me in bed or a wheelchair). My US copy of this book also got a hard back and plastic front with a pocket inside i am going to keep a list of the names and color suggestions given to me by grandchildren, nieces and nephews as they help me color it. My husband then bought me a UK and a US copy for my coloring book collection shelf, both because they are different and because she is my favorite coloring book artist. Yeah, he spoils me. And all my unused coloring books will eventually be given to our grandchildren as gifts when they are ready to appreciate them. With gifts from friends that know how much coloring has helped me (and from him) I have at least 5 copies of each of her books, as well as many other artist' coloring book they will be able to choose from. Again, great video.
Wow, that sounds amazing! Your collection sounds incredible and what a wonderful gift for your grandchildren in the future! I'm so glad you liked my video, it took an absolute age to find all of the differences and get them all written down and then recorded but I love doing it and it's proved to be my most popular video so far. I hope you really enjoy colouring your copy, what a great collaboration with all of your grandchildren and nieces and nephews helping with colour schemes! Happy Colouring! :)
Just FYI, have pulled out my US edition bought from Amazon in August 2017. There are pages missing. For instance, no instruction pages or "this belongs to" at the beginning. The coloring pages begin with the full butterfly on the right, and the story beginning on the left. (""During the long, quiet weeks. . .") I remember some additional pages I encountered when following along with a video some time ago that eventually made me shove the book into away then. BTW, you did a super job on this comparison. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for your very detailed comparison between the UK and US versions of this delightful book. I have pre-ordered my copy from the Book Depository and am happy. I think the quality of the binding will be a bigger factor for me then the differences in paper thickness and colour. The durability of the cover may be the most important factor in the end.
A very difficult choice. I am equally tempted by the paper in the US version and the stitch binding in the UK version. In the end I think the binding will be the deciding factor for me, I will be using this book a lot and wouldn't want it to fall apart on me. It would be interesting to hear any US colourists if any of their glued Johanna books have ever fallen apart.
It is indeed a difficult choice, I don't have a huge number of glue-bound books and because of reviewing, I don't usually get to colour more than one page in each book currently but the UK spine is certainly more durable and I would recommend it, the paper is still very lovely in the UK edition so I don't think you'll be disappointed by that one. :)
In Brazil her books are glue bound and nothing ever happened to mine or to the other people I know! Quite durable actually, my Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest have both taken quite a beating 😅
Thank u for the comparison. Really. I'm your newest fan. hahahah I'm from Brazil and i bought the UK version cuz it was cheaper then the US version but i was trying to search for a comparison of both ones to see if i made a good choice and to know why the UK version is cheaper than the other one... Now i know the differerences, thank you so much! Btw i loved the UK version, this book is magical and beautiful! My favorite one from Johanna's, but i do have all the other ones too! Kisses and thank you again, u really helped me!
Hi Brenda, thank you so much for leaving me such a lovely comment! I'm so glad I could help you find out the differences. The UK version is really lovely so I'm really glad you're happy with your copy. Enjoy colouring it! Kisses to you too from here in England. :)
My US copy of Magical Jungle is falling apart. It’s started very fast after I got into coloring the book. Not any of the others so far, but haven’t started Ivy and the Inky Butterfly! Kathy
Oh no, that's such a shame! I know a few people have had issues with the US edition of Ivy and the Inky Butterfly and glue-bound books just aren't very strong over time unfortunately. I hope you're still enjoying Magical Jungle, despite it falling apart!
Hi there! My UK copy arrived today (26-10) by mail (even though I pre-ordered ad pre-bought it in 18-08 :( ), so I didn't chose wich one I could have. My online bookstore is Bookdepository, so I always get books tha origin in UK. But this copy for me is good, cause I wont have problems with the spine of it. :) Non the less, I just loved to view your comparison video, cause you could compare both editions and show us (and Johanna also), some of the pros and cons of buying the UK or the US. Thank you for this exaustive work, that can help very much the colorists that don't have their copy yet. ;)
I'm so glad your copy arrived and that you're happy with it! Thank you for your lovely comments about my video, I'm really glad it was helpful and that it's appreciated! Happy Colouring! :)
The paper in the US edition is thicker than the UK editions but it's the same paper as her US editions of Johanna's Christmas and Magical Jungle. It's lovely paper to work on! :)
It be wonderful if Johanna could make the US binding as nicely as the UK's. I'm strongly tempted to purchase the US version but I don't want my book to come apart. Very undecided.
Yes, that would be perfect! I've not heard of anyone's copies of Ivy from the US falling apart so much as the binding isn't as good as the UK one, I think as long as you're careful it would be fine. That's what I would be going for I think as the paper is really lovely in that edition.
Yeah, when I heard about the difference in the binding, I almost stopped the video and went to Amazon to buy the UK Version. However I didn't do that. I watched the entire video, now I'm so up in the air. I think I will purchase the US version because of the paper though. It would be great if they would use the good quality binding on the US versions of the book though. Great and informative video. I am probably your newest fan and will definitely hit the subscribe button. I found you because Amazon doesn't state that the 2 books are US/UK, and I was curious what the difference was. Now I know. Thank You.
You're so welcome, I'm glad you found it helpful! The UK edition is lovely and I'm sure you'll be really happy with it and if you can get the US copy then even better, I always like to have both! xxx
Very comprehensive comparison. Thank you very much Lucy. I pre ordered mine from book depository for i guess it will be the UK edition coming to me. Either way cannot wait.
You're very welcome, I'm glad I could help. Both editions are available on Book Depository so you may want to check which it'll be, the cover hasn't been updated for the US copy on there but you can tell the difference by the spelling of Colour, the publisher and the US copy doesn't have a cover on there, the UK one does. I'm sure you'll love it regardless of what turns up though, both copies are gorgeous! :)
A fantastic review. I wasn't aware of the differences between publications. I am going to try and buy the American version first because of the difference in the print size. I will then buy the uk version with the stronger binding as I thought I would colour the book as a gift for my great niece. Thank you for your detailed review.
Thank you very much for this in-depth comparison as I am very nit-picky like yourself. I may have to go for the UK version as being English myself and a Secretary I cannot abide misspellings of any word (that is how pedantic I am!). I also think the binding would be an issue for me too. Thank you again for the time and effort you have gone to creating this video, it is very much appreciated x
You're so welcome! I'm really glad you found it helpful and that I've found so many like-minded people who love to know about the fine details of these differences. I love having both editions but if I had to have one then the spelling would be a real clincher for me, I really don't like incorrect spellings and it certainly sounds like the UK edition would suit you best. I hope you can get a copy soon and that you really enjoy it! Happy Colouring! x
Thank you so much for this review. Bought the US version because of the paper thickness. I am regret now as the book is glue bind and it tends to comes off when i try to open it wider.
Thanks so much for doing this; I have the US version and I'm soooo disappointed in the binding. The fact that you have to force it to lay flat drives me crazy. My UK version should arrive in a couple of days; it's a little disappointing to hear that the paper isn't as good, but I think my US version is going to become my "practice" copy. Can't hurt to have both, I suppose. :)
I always like to have both! The UK edition doesn't have bad paper, it's just not quite as thick but it's still lovely and it's a nicer colour I think. The binding is much better so I'm sure you'll be happier with that! I hope you enjoy it and I'm glad my post helped! :)
Living in Brazil, where the book was not published ( I'm sure it's because they would be forced to use better paper and actually hire a translator - too much money for them) I didn't really had a choice. One bookstore had the English edition, but it would take 3 months to get here. One had the US edition, it took 2. So I ended up with the US edition and I love that paper! The cover is a beauty.
I'm so glad you're happy with the edition you were able to get! The US edition is really lovely, the paper is fabulous and the cover is beautiful. Happy Colouring! :)
Wonderful. You have not bored me at all.I appreciated your detailed comparisons and feel that the US paper is to my liking.Did you actually try watercolours on both versions and if so, which did you personally prefer ?Would love to see many more of your videos....no shouting or chatting about uninteresting trivia !Thank you.Kind regards from Staffordshire.
Ah thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful! No, I haven't tried watercolours on them yet but as the paper is thicker in the US edition it's likely that it would perform better but Johanan has used water in the UK edition which really good effect so I'm sure both would be fine as long as the use of water was minimal. I will certainly keep doing videos, I can't promise no random chat, I'm a very anxious person and when I'm recording I have very little awareness of what I'm saying but I do try to stay on task and keep focused just on the book! :)
Brilliant comparison I really enjoyed it. I will be going for the US copy I absolutely adore the cover compared to the UK copy. Paper looks better too. Thank you also for the links. Look forward to your colour tutorials as well. Jan x
I have just got the uk edition as it was all I could find but I'm going to find the us edition as well like I am planing to do for the Christmas one too
Thank you for your video :). It was very interesting to watch. I have the U.S. version, and I hadn't though much about the binding, but it is hard to color the pages toward the middle. Do you know what kind of binding Johanna's new flower book will have?
Thanks for your lovely comment, I'm glad you liked my video! I'm guessing that World of Flowers will have the same bindings as previous editions with the US one being glue-bound and the UK one being stitch and glue-bound.
Thank you so much, that means a lot coming from you! I'm so pleased to have helped and yes, it's always best to have both! Do let me know which you prefer and if you find any differences I didn't mention! :)
Absolutely wonderful comparison! I really do love the U.K. cover but your video has made me more at ease with getting the US version since I use a lot of wet media and the US paper seems better for that purpose 😀
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you found it helpful! Both copies are gorgeous but definitely for wet media I think the US copy is best. I hope you love it when it arrives! :)
Both books are lovely but unfortunately I received a fairly unglued copy of the us version from amazon. It bums me out cause the paper is so nice. Returned it and got the U.K. Version on book depository.
Oh that's such a shame, what a disappointment! I'm sure you'll have much more luck with the UK edition, it definitely has a better binding and the paper is still very lovely. I hope you'll enjoy it! :)

@@ColouringInTheMidstOfMadness seriously your post in your blog about the difference in uk/us books with pictures, it’s the best I have seen! So much details others don’t talk about. Thank you for all your work! 🙏❤️
@@SAJK0KAT Thank you so much! That's so kind and I'm so glad it's appreciated. I absolutely love doing those posts, they're my favourites, I'm very detail-oriented so it really suits me to do them and lots of people seem interested which is lovely!
As I explain at the beginning, many of the differences don't affect use or enjoyment but the image size and paper quality do, as does the binding style. If you read all the comments below you'll see that people want to know these things and like finding out about the tiny differences as well as those that affect enjoyment of the book. Glue bindings are known to eventually fall apart and therefore those wanting to colour this book as an heirloom for their children may well prefer the UK edition as it has a glue and stich-bound spine. The paper is thicker and more able to cope with wet media in the US copy. I'm sorry my video was lost on you but judging by the nearly 1500 views it's had in a week, it's obviously been helpful for some people.

It looks like the shelf pic, with more of the picture in the US version, is set further to the right of the center in the UK version. Is that what happened?
No, I've just looked at the full spread and there is some missing on the left side of the UK image as well, it's more like it's slightly zoomed in rather than shifted in either direction. It's only on a very few images.
Interesting to note that in Johanna's videos on FaceBook it is of not that she pronounces her name Jo Hanna.
I've noticed this and I do try as much as I can to say it that way but I often forget because I'm focusing so much on what I need to say. I will try harder in future to get her name pronounced correctly!

I fail to see what difference this makes.
