- Slowly building to an intense finale, this outstanding performance is worth watching for the whole 47 minutes. Brother and sister duo, Debojyoti and Joyeeta Sanyal (on tabla and sitar) are joined by Yammema Mitha on tampura. They play Raag Malkauns, one of the oldest ragas in Indian classical music.
Many thanks to John for providing such a beautiful house concert setting.
The sitar of a female player is the soul, the sitar of male player the weapon.
You played my favourite Raga so nicely with excellent rendition. God bless you both to gift us such soulful music.
Joyeeta is certainly a very accomplished musician. The serenity of her music is much beyond her years.
Hard as I try, I can't remember an alaap as exquisite, soulful, and inventive in my 45 years of raga listening. And that was only the beginning to a magnificent rendition of Malkauns. Kudos also to Debojyoti for an equally bravura performance melded absolutely seamlessly to the sitar.

Great promising.......excellent depth.
Unbelievable ❤️it
Raaga Malkaunce take me to different places
wonderful Joyeeta..
Immense depth and practice must have gone to play the king of all ragas...One of the best i have heard...very soon she could reach the levels of Nikhil Banerjee or budhaditya... very much absorbed...Need to hear more of her recitals....
She is indeed good, but comparing to Pt Budhaditya Mukherjee or Pt Nikhil Banerjee is not something I can digest. Rather ridiculous. They are the top of Mount Everest, and all these are yet to reach even the base of Mt Everest
Zabardast cheers from Toronto
Wow, such a beautiful mind. A very special artist indeed.
Fantastic rendition of Malkauns by Joyita.
Very tasteful. Her alap really conveys the spirit of malkauns.
What a masterpiece! No words to admire this more than musical creativity. In modern world, people struggle to regulate feelings , good or bad, but this classical treasure is a symbol of how to ride the emotions in command and collective joy.
I can go on talking about it as a professional dealing with with feelings, thoughts and behaviour but let's appreciate what treasures our ancestors have left for us!!!
You both are my new discovery in Indian classical music that can drown me in 'Malkauns' reaching delightful climax!
Tantalizing... Haunting, yet captivating... Awesome.
Simply marvelous with perfect support on Tabla. thanks.
Excellent performance - exceeded my expectation even with the limitations of a home sound recording.
🙏💐💐💐💐💐
Beautiful
What a team reaching crescendo together! This brother and sister team played beautifully. I applaud their performance and Joyeetaji played sitar most hauntingly and well supported by her brother on tabla. BRAVO!
Kub sundor.joyeeta di to puro ma saraswati..sotti...I respect her.kub bhalo may....
Beautiful. I could listen to this forever... and tablas to die for. :D
Thanks jaiho
j'adore trop cette joueuse de sitar très douée

A journey into a mystical world without fuss, without any show and showing off. Joyeeta is 100% absorbed, and 100% devoted to the instrument and her music. The mastering of the technique is just stunning. But more though fascinating is how she takes us with her into a completely another world, another universe, or another subtle realm of consciousness. A trip into a new land, a new form of existence. Debojyoti is able to pick up on Joyeeta's fly-through space territory. Really fully capturing my mind. Thank you so much. 🙏
words cannot describe how perfect this entire thing is ! and that end ... can move mountains!
devotional experience. Great performance. Like to listen to more of their composition.
La jabab shilpi La jabab
Joyeeta certainly plays with depth and spirit
+bodhi heeren Indeed she does ... such a soulful performer! Seeing her live is a magical experience.

So, so beautiful!
Amazing.. Thank you very much
Beautiful, marvelous, fantastic! What a performance! when I went on listening the music, I lost myself in hearing it. Excellent .
+Shridhara Udupa Absolutely!
Yo hago meditacion y con esta raga he sentido una paz y u gozo interno como nunca.Segun he leído alguna vez esta raga fue creada por Shiva para calmar a su consorte Parvati que estaba enfurecida por algo.
heavenly!
অসাধারণ
Great musicians, it was a pleasure watching and connecting with. Thanks for sharing :)
+Zohar Lindenbaum They are amazing ... so glad you loved it!
Absolutely great and soulful!
Saw them in small concert. A Shankar more melodic BUT here there was a poetry, spell binding, demanding a concentration that turned into a state of trance. The 'quiet' passages were of a beauty rarely attained.
Amazing performance!!!!!
Lovely! Very well done, thanks.
out standing
Astounding!
Thank you for uploading this tremendous performance! Loved every bit of it.
Very very good performance
gets really kind of deep......
Excellent, pl upload some more live concert of Joyeeta.

so beautiful...
Amazing you are!

Beautiful!!! The tabla was fantastic too. Did someone else also feel that the "baaya" of the tabla did not get much of the mic!?
I'm guessing that adjusting equalizer settings through an audio software would fix the problem, if you felt that it was subdued. On my computer/earphones, it was very well balanced.
beautiful :)
Going into 'That' there are no faces, no subjects, no raga, just the lanterns that some call stars.
Nice to that you tried to play on the 3rd string. Usually, now a days, artist try to play fast on 1st string only. Malkauns is very soulful deep raga. Please practice meed on 3rd string, too. And, why not on 4th string? Baba' alauddin gharana.
WOW
absolutnie ANANDA!
Omg can I be a star?
Why u don't perform outside Bengal?
She must have been listening to a lot of Nikhil Banerjee. Sounds a bit like one of his recordings. Who was/is her teacher?
Wondering if we could have a version with the audio and video fully synced...? That would be absolute perfection! :)

I love this. How do I book ?

Wonderful.. Truly beautiful. Do they have any recordings available? Blessings !
Apparently not ... we hope to be filming them again soon! Their music is such a gift to the world.

i can send you some recordings made in my recording studio
Apparently they do have some recordings out now.

Tabla is higher level than sitar player
G tuning
Malkauns, SA is D. MA ,fourth is strong G. Tanpura sounds ma sa sa SA.
Does anyone know the tuning of the sympathetic strings?
it's not that important as long as you get whatever key you're playing in. I usually tune to C# (mixolydian mode rather than major key so with a dominant 7th - I think it's called kamaj in indian music) and my sympathetic strings are tuned C# D# F F# G# A# B (in whatever order). I just tune each string to whatever note it happens to be near to when I pick the sitar up. As long as your symp strings are pitched to the intervals of the key you want to play in then the setup doesn't matter too much
Sympathetic strings are ALWAYS tuned to the notes in the RAga you are going to play. Normally the sequence of tuning is
1. Strings 1-2-3 tuned to Saa-Ni-Saa or Saa-Dha-Saa (depending upon whether Ni or present in the RAga or absent)
2. Then Re (if present), Ga (If present), Ma (if present) Pa (If present), Dha(If present), Ni(If present) and then upper octave Sa and then upper Octave Re. Many people tune the last string to upper octave Ga.
3. If you have more than max 12 strings as tuned above, then we tune 2 consecutive strings to Pa or Ma whichever note is dominant in the Raga, or both.
Fabelhaft. Vom ersten ton an. Das Herz ist da ! Wer ist sie ?! !!
Very good, but need to practice more on tuning the sitar, ragadhaari, and meends. But I liked your attempt
You can trust Johnny at Johnny's house to have mood lighting that matches a pub, over emphasise the tabla while mixing and last but not least let loose his overfed cat on the hapless musicians. Kuch akal dilao yar!
HariLilNandan biatch !
Haha, that's quite an observation! The lighting worked great, and the tabla balance in the mix was excellent to my ears though!

Tabla is really problematic.
Bad recording.
