Bring it back to NYC!!!! Lucky to see it over 10 1/2 years ago with the full original cast. This Kennedy Center cast brings a whole new life to this beautifully haunting story.
This was so good!! I bawled pretty much the whole time. For a production that was this good for just a reading was spoiling. Gabe, ugh Gabe is a whole babe and his shadowing and his beautiful voice follows you home after. His chemistry with Dianne literally brings you to tears. Diannes voice was so amazing and raw. Killed the show. Every ounce of her being went into that character. And to bring more DEH people, Henry was so good, happy I was able to see him! Dan brings a whole new type of love and compassion toward Dianne. Natalie will take you back every time she sings, next Ariana if ya ask me. I would see this show a billion times over. Please bring it to broadway or touring with the same cast.
I don’t know how I feel about Diana or Natalie idk there’s just something that not connecting with me but the Gabe and Dan are absolutely amazing to me my heart just skips a beat listening to them 💕I’d kill to hear their “I Am the One (Reprise)”
In person, the whole show was weak...especially Gabe...he and fine/Madden were completely forgettable...Henry was the strongest character on that stage
I saw this production in the middle of a course of ECT treatments, so I can't remember actually seeing it, which makes me so angry because this cast seems incredible, plus it was directed by Michael Greif?! I mean come on!

i do not love rachel bay jones' voice, but omg is she a million times better than alice ripley. this show made me fall in love with aaron tveit, and i so want to listen to the album, but alice ripley's voice drives me out of my damn mind.
If Rachel had been in the show when it was on Broadway, it would have bombed. She's nowhere near as talented as Alice. Pearl Sun and Jessica Phillips were also better.
@@quentinquale1694 agreed...while i actually really like her voice, her Diana is all one level...Alice and Jessica's Diana were impeccable...jessica is actually my favorite Diana...maybe if they'd had more time to really flesh out the characters and get comfortable with the material, I would feel differently, but every member, with then exception of Ben, held back and were one dimensional.

I travelled to NY from the UK specifically to see the original Broadway production - and was blown away. To this day it was the most intense, at times harrowing, even of theatre I have ever experienced. This, however, looks completely flat. Not too keen on colourblind casting in this particular show. Next to Normal should be gritty, naturalistic with a pathos running through it. I don't want to be taken out of it by needless distractions. Frankly it doesn't look like I missed much by not seeing this one
you truly didn't....color blind casting doesn't bother me when the people are talented and right for the roles...while this cast vocally was very talented, the performances left A LOT to be desired...Gabe and the Doctor were woefully miscast and forgettable...Ben Levi Ross was the best thing in the show...he should have been Gabe...the tempos were slow and so was the energy...it felt like everyone was kind of marking it...nobody ever truly let go, and if you hold back with this show, it doesn't work.
No shade on the cast, because they're doing great, but I feel like if Dan and Gabe are going to be black, it's weird to not cast somebody black as Natalie. Not in a "How can they be related?" way; it has no logical issues in-universe. Just from a casting perspective, it seems fishy. Kind of strikes me as a colorism thing. But the cast is doing great.
it's just simply color blind casting...in the revamp of Les Mis, Eponine was black but the thenardiers weren't....who cares? You cast the best people for the show and it doesn't matter what color they are...I loved that Gabe and Dan were black....my beef with this production was that Gabe was dreadful...nice voice but completely forgettable

That's more or less exactly what I'm getting at; racial type-casting tends to make me uncomfortable. You see a lot of it in shows like Les Mis and Heathers; certain characters are often played by people of color and others scarcely are. I'm saying, I wish I could see more fun roles filled by women of color. It would even elevate the show's message, because mental health in the black community specifically is a whole new conversation.

@@TheAmityElf I get where you're coming from...as a white female, I love to see more POC in anything that has typically been cast as white, and I'd love to see a black Diana! I'm the artistic director of a community theatre in an area that's sorely lacking in POC which is frustrating bc I can't do certain shows like Aida or Hairspray or In the Heights...it's encouraging that "color blind" casting is becoming normal 😊
I saw the opening performance of this and it was disappointing....with the exception of Henry (who absolutely OWNED the show), it felt as if they were all holding back...the energy and connection to each other was non existent...look at their body language when the camera is panned out...NO tension whatsoever....there was never any tension with Gabe...no taunting to Natalie...no anger towards Dan...he was just.....there....Diana was EXACTLY the same in her mania and after ECT...no levels at all...dan was EXACTLY the same all the way thru as well....there was never any build up....vocally they were fantastic, but that's pretty much it.
Just listening to this I don't like their casting on Diana and Natalie, I know it is hard to beat the OBC, but in Light in this video there just is no blending of them to everyone else. I know one thing for sure from this and that it's that I need more of Ben Levi Ross as Henry
God, I hope this gets released. I will gladly throw all of my money at it.

i saw this last month and met the whole cast and it was absolutely fantastic. a literal dream come true for an aspiring natalie

To be fair though, in real life, you can have a completely white appearing child and a completely black appearing child be full biological siblings.

Maybe if I actually saw this live I'd have a different perspective, but this does not look good at all to me.
