This color educational film is about the Order of Demolay, which was to help boys 14-21 to become better sons and better men. This film is circa the early 1960s based on research.
John Cameron Swayze walks out of a house and says he is going to tell us about the story of Order of Demolay. DeMolay International, was founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1919, and is an international fraternal organization for young men ages 14 to 21. It was named for Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Its principles are based on love of God, love of parents and love of country. Opening titles: The Demolay Story, presented by the International supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay (:10-1:45). A statue of a soldier wearing a suit of armor on a horse. Jacques de Molay artist rendering. Gargoyles. Smoke plume. A group of men sit around a table. Frank S. Land, called 'dad' (1:46-3:56). Land created seven cardinal virtues: Filial Love, Reverence, Courtesy, Comradeship, Fidelity, Cleanness, & Patriotism. A man walks onto an altar between 6 candles. Other men follow and speak on the altar, one at a time (3:57-6:50). Inside Land's office. Photographs on the wall: generals, entertainers, statesmen, business leaders, Mickey Mouse and others. Men wearing capes walk out and bow. Men sit at a table, the advisory council. They exchange papers and discuss. Three men kneel and they are given the degree of chevalier. Each one receives the honor, stands up, and shakes the hand of the presenter. Boys play basketball. Boys play softball (6:51-10:10). A rifle tournament for the boys. Demolay bowling league. Swimming races. Boys clap. Diving off the diving board into the pool, boys clap. A track meet. Volleyball game. Water skiing. Canoe racing. Canoe derby on the Mississippi. A woman helps some boys with some envelopes. Two boys do fundraising door to door with a woman. A man is sold something. On the street the boy sell items. A car wash is going on as a fundraiser. A chapter waiters club. Waiters serve dinners at a suited affair. Boys clean parked cars as a service. A card is placed under the windshield wiper (10:11-14:08). Boys carry baskets of food out of a building. Chapter members clean up liter on city streets and off highways. A play is performed of cops badgering a suspect. The drum corp in Illinois performs on an empty field. Caldwell, NJ bagpipe band performs in a parade (14:09-16:45). A campfire is set as a large group of boys sing around it. Beach. Boys swim in the surf. A band plays at a dance as boys dance with girls. Women walk to be judged as the 'sweetheart.' Judges discuss. The winner is crowned in a royal manner. (16:46-18:31). People dance. At 9pm no matter the activity, everything ceases, and a speaker talks about pausing so the chaplain can lead a prayer. The chaplain prays while those men in the chapter kneel. Tall buildings, a giant pool near the beach in Miami Beach, FL. Tree shaded camp in Wisconsin. Boys sit and listen at camp. Boys practice archery. Outdoor basketball. Horseback riding. The flower talk is performed and its a tribute to motherhood (18:32-24:07). Mothers club for the chapter members. Women serve the boys fruit punch from a bowl, some sew. Another ceremony for those distending adult members. On the Sunday nearest March 18th, those recommit themselves to the cause of the Demolay. A speaker inside the church speaks (24:08-26:53). Boys leave a service and shake hands with others. Glass stained painting that reads: I do so promise and vow as the narrator wraps up the Demolay morals. Symbol of the Demolay. The Demolay vow crawls slowly across the screen (25:54-28:56). End credits (28:57-29:05).
DeMolay International, founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1919, is an international fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21. It was named for Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. DeMolay is classified by the IRS as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization. DeMolay is open for membership to young men between the ages of 12 to 21 of good character who acknowledge a higher spiritual power. It has about 15,000 active members. Although not a "Masonic organization" as such, DeMolay is considered to be part of the general "family" of Masonic and associated organizations. A family connection to Masonry is not a prerequisite for membership.

Not really, while I was a Charter member of Ralph Buck Chapter Order of DeMolay and now, as a Senior DeMolay, our groups were becoming better citizens. Then, when I went into our countries military service the things that I was taught as a DeMolay. So, after a 28-year military career [Navy, Army, and recalled Navy], I can say that I still remember the things I was taught so many years ago.
My BA in Theology and a MA in Industrial Computers Robotics and Electronics Engineering 29-years after the BA, only shows you can teach an old dog a new trick. But, DeMolay is still in my soul and will forever be.

Thanks for your comment. Many people can not believe that good organizations exist. I joined in 1964 served many offices, but not MC. I became a Master Mason in 1982 when I became 21 and after being transferred to Kansas City MO joined The Valley of Kansas City where Dad Land started DeMolay

@ im not sure- Im 49 now and i was 12-13 then(they let 12 year olds in at Charlotte branch) we did basic charity work and helped folks so that was cool. it just got a little weird for me when i moved into the actual room where the rituals took place. I lasted maybe 2 more meetings until I left.....

Too bad, you missed out on a wonderful experience. I am a Mason, a 4 time Past Master, and served as Associate Bethel Guardian for Job's Daughters. These girls are the finest I've known, and learned things like event planning, organization and team building, and how to work well with others - things they no longer teach in schools. There is no doctrine, does not conflict with church, but supports it. I also am a Past Master Councilor in DeMolay, from 1971. Most pastors recommend these organizations, unless they haven't taken a moment to find out about them. If they fear they are going to lead their "flock" away, they haven't taken five minutes to explore. My mother always regretted not join when she was young, and became active in every ladies Masonic organizations when she was older, and was a very devout church member. I am sixth generation Mason, and my son is Seventh! I'm sorry that you missed this wonderful experience, Betty.

Demolay is certainly something I could’ve benefited from in my youth….a brother Mason whom brought me into the Craft this year was in Demolay as a youth and told of how it prepared him for regular life, and later when he himself became a Mason.

Charter member Friendship Chapter Wilmington, MA PMC, MSA RD, Chev, Appointed District Rep. as well. And made a run for State Junior Councilor. Joined my Masonic lodge , became a Master Mason at 21 and a member now for 47 yrs. Made my journey through York and Scottish Rites becoming 32 degree Mason. And the journey still continues.......!

I have been a DeMolay 26 yrs now and have not seen heard or done anything that would go against the teachings of the Bible and God's great graces! One of the requirements for membership is the belief in a Supreme Being. Members include Christians, Jews, Mormons, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims and others. The Bible, however, warns of memberships that bind us to nonbelievers (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).
The initiation into the DeMolay is very much like that of Freemasonry. The candidate is blindfolded to “symbolize lack of knowledge.” Also the candidate is told, “The solemn purpose of all our ceremonies is to impress upon your minds great truths of right living to aid you in deserving the good opinion of all right-thinking men.” This teaching tries to circumvent the teachings of Scripture, which makes it clear that “living right” is impossible without the saving work of Christ on the cross on our behalf (Romans 3:20-24). No amount of “good opinion” will counter the basic nature of man: “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away” (Isaiah 64:6 ).
The DeMolay ritual is seen as a “symbolic journey” wherein the candidate is taught the meaning of many symbols, including (but not limited to) jewels, crown, swords, school books, and the Bible. According to the Order of the DeMolay, the Holy Bible’s only use is symbolic in nature. “The Bible is used as a symbol of the spiritual foundation that all DeMolay members are required to have before they can join. It is not intended to represent an endorsement of the Christian religion over any others. A DeMolay’s belief in a particular religious doctrine is something that is between him and God. It is something that must be arrived at through deep consultation with his family, his pastor or others whose opinion he values, followed by his own deep thought and prayer. Generally, the holy book of the predominant religion of that nation or area is the spiritual guide book used in the local DeMolay Chapter room. However, should a Chapter’s membership include members from more than one religion, more than one holy book may be used in DeMolay ceremonies.”
This teaching is contrary to the very Word of God. The Bible is not a “symbolic tool.” “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Even though the DeMolay declares the Bible is a symbolic item, it shamelessly uses it for the purpose of making a candidate believe the oath he is taking is solemn and in some way supported by God.
