Miata NB 5 speed transmission oil change

A brief description of the process of changing the transmission oil in a NB Miata.
Drain plug should be torqued to 29-43 ft-lbs I went back and used a torque wrench.

That square Plug is a pipe plug. Measure it and get the correct size plug socket from Snap On tools on line, or a tool truck. That Knipex pliers will round that pipe plug off eventually. The hack fix is to file down the sides of the pipe plug till the square parts fits a popular SAE open end wrench like 3/4". To get more height out of the short jack stands a solid piece of wood like a 2"x10" underneath the base of the jackstand works great.

Fifteen days ago I bought my first mx-5. It is almost the same as yours: NB green with internal beige 1.6 16V.
I already changed the petrol filter, motor oil and its filter. Also the air filter. Tomorrow I will put four new Yokohama tires on it and on the weekend, following your guide, I will change the gearbox and differential oils.

Hey I have a 1998 nb with an auto, I want to change the atf fluid on it, is the process any different? Ie I don't have to worry about the fill bolt because of the reservoir in the engine bay and what atf fluid would you recommend?
