Forget Bret and his "smile while you ride" tag line. The first 50 seconds of Dork laughing his ass off as he rides in the hail just epitomizes the riding spirit. Go buddy!
Ben your sense of humor is pure gold absolutely golden adventures from you Ben. More people like you and the earth would be a lot better place to live!
Very cool and funny video. I have ridden in hail and lightning a few times here in AZ. Even with all my gear on it finds ways to hit you in unpadded areas . Keep the content coming
You are right, it’s not the tires that protect you from lightning. Logic says that if lighting can make it from clouds to the ground, the few inches of air from your vehicle to the ground would be no problem. But electricity flows on the outside of metal objects. And that metal is certainly less resistance than the air inside the cabin.
Yeah Dork, when I was stationed in Wichita Falls in the AF, I was riding up the only hill for a hundred miles in a thunderstorm. I took a hit to my throttle arm. Hurt like hell, and then I rode under a car wash to sit it out. My friend Don, got hit and was knocked unconscious. His wife, who was riding pillion, reach over him and grabbed the handlebars, guiding the bike to the shoulder. Long answer is, no, you have zero protection! 😅
From an Oregon licensed supervising electrician: You're right that people in a car are safer from lightning because they are surrounded by metal. Don't think for a second that you're safe on a bike because of the three inches of rubber between you and the ground. That lightning traveled through 1 mile of air. A little rubber won't slow it down. Tried to outrun a storm like yours in Idaho in 1981. Pinned my 1974 dt360 at over 80. I heard a bike come up from behind and pass me like I was in his way. It was a new Honda cr125 (wtf)?
They were probably looking in their rear view mirror thinking "Look at that poor bastard on a motorcycle." I don't mind riding in the rain until I get wet.
My wife and I got caught in a hail storm twice this year on the FJR, one about 10 miles from home in the country. We were not giggling like a you were though... :) What was really strange is we kept getting hit in the exact same spot over and over, for me it was my left knee...
Ben, Your closing scene is very similar to the closing scene in the classic movie, "White Christmas." Is that plagiarism or just coincidence? You may be (probably) the first TransAlp test rider in a hailstorm!! Nice going! Dork in the Road is always a blast.
Next time pass that dude and duck down behind that shield dude! Lol i been in hail once and I had no gloves. For some reason I was just as excited as you! Nature threw a fun little fast ball at us
HA, HA, HA! Reminds of when I bought my new '22 BMW GSA in June of '22. On one of the first rides I went West (to the mountains) and it HAILED! It was so bad that the hail collected on the road and the sides making it all white. It continued and I was "fording a river" down the middle of the pavement. Yup, "RAIN mode" and had to slow down. At first it was FUN but then it turned it to "wholly shit"! Am I going to dent my tank? Am I going to be able to stay on the road (either hydroplane in the "river" or slide out on the ice). I had just left a small town and thought I'd be able to make it home just fine but it quickly became apparent that this was going to be here for awhile and it was moving in the same direction I was headed. So, I turned around, headed back to the town and, with a few other motorbikes, congregated under the roof of a Service Station! Like you, I was laughing at the start "bring it on" but as "insert whomever you believe controls this shit" heard that, "they" did bring it on and my mirth changed to worry about my chances of making it out in one piece thus, the turnaround. But, all was well in the end. My new Klim gear was WONDERFUL!
Crazy! It can very dangerous but you laughed like an evil scientist, lol and the masculine “owee ” was hilarious! Your beard probably acted as a sponge?
What does RAIN MODE actually do?! It’s the same as traction control right? Since I got my dual sport, I have experienced so many opportunities to feel like a kid again. It truly adds a whole new dimension of excitement to my life now that I’m 51. I participate in lots of different types of outdoor activities too, like fishing, scuba diving, hunting, etc, but there’s something about riding my bike in the rain and mud that just brings back so many childhood memories.
I have kind of found the low thermal limit of the Rev'it Offtrack jacket (first version) with the detachable thermal liner recently. Did a long ride at around 0-5 degrees Celsius and and it was stupid cold. I guess 10C is the minimum. It's an awesome summer jacket though.
It’s an adventure bike so its just another adventure. LOL I got caught in hail one. Bolted into the coin wash. Thankfully I just happened to be near it. Thankfully home safe for ya.
Hope you’re out on da bike today. Might be the last dry pavement for a while. I’m gearing up for a short ride right now, before the rain comes in later.
Hi Ben, have been enjoying all your content! Keep up the great work! I am in NW Oregon and trying to decide on pants between the MSR Xplorer, Rev'It Offtrack 2 H2O or Dainese Tempest 3 D-Dry. I just need something to keep me dry, not necessarily warm, as I can layer. Do you usually wear these over pants or by themselves?
@@DorkintheRoad Thanks for that! Any preference between the pants? Mostly riding to work 40 miles in rain in the fall, winter, spring, and some mild offroad.
I didn't find riding in hail that much fun when I did it. How long were you riding in the rain? I once spent 2 hours riding in rain on a freeway and got soaked through but I didn't have gear that good and I had vinyl rain coat and pants over the top. The 1st 45mins or so the rain was torrential before it started easing off.
Looked like a good test to me, although a bit on the dangerous side with the hail. I am having a difficult time getting any time commitment on accessories for my TransAlp - due in a few weeks. Any suggestions? Are you going with Honda or other manufacturers on things like guards, skid plates, etc. Thanks Ben.
Thanks Ben, I tried the Moto Machines site and looks like the items such as skid plate, tank guard, engine guard must be OOS as it won't add it to my cart. I will try giving them a phone call on Monday.@@DorkintheRoad
Rain liners have to be worn over the gloves so the water doesn't run down the liner and into the glove. My BMW Gear does the same thing if I don't put the sleeves over the gloves.....
Hail ? Bike, car... get off the road and wait for the storm to pass. Every time I've been in a severe hailstorm... (one where the hail starts to accumulate on the road)... I've seen multiple accidents... with some of them pretty severe. Hail = ball bearings made of ice.
Even a car won’t save you. Several years ago, a car got hit cruising down a North Dakota freeway. Left four burn marks on the pavement and deceased occupants.
I think you are safe on your motorcycle... maybe not as safe as in a car... BUT, between 2006 and 2021 lightening killed 444 people in USA... So the chances are not very high to be hit or killed 😁 ...You are NOT that big!

Aw, thanks ;)
I have been fortunate enough to only be caught out in hail a few times on the bike. It does turn into a bit of a weird video game.
Dude you crack me up and I love it. I’m glad you were being safe and you made it home.
One of the best "product test" ever !
Well done Honda with traction control for ice storm and Rev'it for making great gear. Thanks for review
Very cool and funny video. I have ridden in hail and lightning a few times here in AZ. Even with all my gear on it finds ways to hit you in unpadded areas . Keep the content coming
i've heard you say tons of times, if you dont ride in rain, you wont ride much around here. today proves that one. glad you made it home safe.
That laughter is so good and infectious! So glad you got it on camera and shared it with us.
I been considering buying the Revit offtrack 2 and your real life test has convinced me, so thank's for that...
Great Video. Capturing the essence of all weather riding!
Just got my transalp today after having a klr based on your review and I do not regret it at all thank you
I’ve been excited about that gear, since it was announced. Hopefully you’ll make a real review of it later.
We are glad you made it back home safe.
Awesome video! I am very happy that you arrived home safely!
You live to ride another day! Peace ❤
100% DORK in the road, love it
i have had the first offtrack for a year an love it. the changes look good to be honest. great vid as always

When it's fun for you, it's fun for us, too--great little video!
Death by a thousand hail stones. At least now we know the new TransAlp can make it to hail and back.

Brilliant vid mate, I think I've just found my next ADV suit!!
Dork you’re having way too much fun for the current riding conditions!!😂
its dumb but why so much fun to ride in the rain? Loved your laughs.
I went from Pennsylvania to Colorado in off and on rain the whole time. It's not that much fun.
dude! you're having so much fun and I love it. hahah
We now know the Transalp is hail rated !! Glad you made it home safe and dry !

Hail to the Dork. Great job. Good info. God bless. Happy trails.
LOL good one ;)
Dude, the hail was CRAZY here too, about marble size as well. I was glad I was inside at the time lol!
Real life experiences . Now that is a nasty test. Enjoyed the video and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE!
They were probably looking in their rear view mirror thinking "Look at that poor bastard on a motorcycle." I don't mind riding in the rain until I get wet.
HAIL of a test!! 🤣😉
🥁 tish
Thank you and goodnight, much love 😊
so very punny!

The gods were mistaken, giving a man so prone to puns this easy of an opportunity. 😁
Loving the laughing! Fantastic!
here in Belgium we ride 50% in the rain and we put our glove ends in our sleves so de rain doesn't seap (seep ?) in. Keep up the the fanbtastic work !
Yeah I didn't set these up correctly. Wasn't expecting to get this wet, which is also why I didn't close my collar

Cool, been caught in a similar one also

Dork in the Hail strom
I was on the Columbia today. No hail but CRAZY lightning!!!
It’s an adventure bike so its just another adventure. LOL I got caught in hail one. Bolted into the coin wash. Thankfully I just happened to be near it.

Whoa! Talk about a deluge!

Awesome.
😂😂 good to see you living your best life my brotha!! Keep the shiny side up 🤘🏽🤘🏽

I usually wear them by themselves or with a base layer
@@DorkintheRoad Thanks for that! Any preference between the pants? Mostly riding to work 40 miles in rain in the fall, winter, spring, and some mild offroad.
Oh hail the Dork!!! On the Rev’it Offtrack 2 how was the fit on the jacket and pants?
Careful what you wish for!
no kidding
Just rain up in Beaverton today, was riding my Africa Twin around and would have loved to see some hail.

I’ve never ridden in hail storms, and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t excite me like it did you. lol
That was a hoot!
No issues with raindrops on your visor?.
Seems like the Bike handled well.

You Rock Ben
You get the Soggy Butt award
this was fun.
At least you got the off-road part done before it started hailing lol
lol... "it hurts so bad, hahahah" your nuts !
hi does the Rivit gear run small?
Not fun getting pelted with hail..it hurts...haha...but fun watching you in it...😂😂...
I was enjoying myself...but thankfully wasn't out there very long
LOL, your f'n nuts mate!
You have GOT to give us a bruise count…!
Did it ding up the tank ?
That was brave of you! 😅
and just after RyanF9's goretex vid. U can set that 5th user mode as hail now.
lol I may need to
Bubble bath with a cigar next. 😮
I know people hate it but for me riding in the rain is one of my favorite things to do.
Yeah I kinda like it. In short doses, anyway.
Bro! What the hail are you doing!?
What tank bag is that????
Just another day in the PNW.😁💦
hi mediamod IS ok? 😅
Rain liners have to be worn over the gloves so the water doesn't run down the liner and into the glove. My BMW Gear does the same thing if I don't put the sleeves over the gloves.....
Yeah I would have rearranged my stuff if I'd had time to prepare. Kinda got caught by surprise on this one
If you wonder why this guy is “Dork in the Road” the first two minutes of this video will explain all.
I have never been caught in a hailstorm, but I have been rained on wearing nothing but a mesh jacket with no waterproof layer. That was no fun.
I was an electrician. If lightning hits you in the head, you are gonna have a bad day. *Pro tip*
What coating have you put on your visor?
No coating. Just a new-ish helmet.
Way to break it in! 👍@@DorkintheRoad
🥇👍
Some days are good riding days, others? not so much.
Dude, you’ve lost it…your mind has gone to hail.
I got caught in the edge of a hurricane, lets just say my gear didnt hold up.i was soaked to the bone.
Did it damage your bike?
Nah just got it wet.
I thought it was the rubber tires that insulate you/bike from the GROUND . . .
I guess that's a common misconception.

There was nowhere to get off the road. More danger standing in the middle of a field or under a tree than just minimizing risk by getting home ASAP.
To bad you didn't have Gore-Tex
😅🤣😅👍👍👍🧐
lol
Even a car won’t save you. Several years ago, a car got hit cruising down a North Dakota freeway. Left four burn marks on the pavement and deceased occupants.
