My Fiance converted yesterday to Catholicism and we get married this Saturday 🙂 Feeling so grateful to God for His grace 🙏 I have to admit that I have struggled with sexual addictions most of my life and have fallen in and out of my faith. Through the persistent prayers of my mother I'm sure and God pulling me to want to be holy, I finally made a resolution that I wanted to do things properly. My Fiance( then girlfriend) was very supportive of my decision and although it hasn't been the easiest road with little falls here and there we have managed to keep ourselves from having sex. Looking forward to embracing married life with a real sense of love and growing in God's grace together.
As someone who used to be in conflict with the Church's take on sexuality, knowing and realizing that it's all just about Love (God's version) has given me a whole new level of clarity over...well, everything.
I know exactly how you feel. When I started to take my faith seriously again, I had a completely wrong idea about the Church's teachings on sexuality. It seemed so negative. Over the last couple of years I realized that the Church's take is not only inherently positive, it is also much more about true love than secular society's view on sexuality.
I'm struggling. My girlfriend (a Christian who does not deliberately follow the faith) and I (somewhat devote Catholic) are struggling to find place to land on sex.

How much I regret that I didn't realize the value of our incredible religion when I was young. I only now realize the value of a GOOD teacher. A good teacher has the power to ingrain these jewels into children and to affect the trajectory of their lives.
I got married 3 months ago, I can say that giving your body to your spouse is a completely different dimension. You can feel the blessing over the union of the man and the woman. Physically , emotionally and mentally we two became one. You receive sex as a gift and it is so freeing to be able to be with God at all times before, during and after the act. You do not have to choose between God or a man but be United as one ♥️🙏🏼✝️ . People, wait for your husband or your wife and keep your body to him or her even if you are not virgin at this moment, restart where you are and enter your path to heaven 💕💝
Someone who is a Catholic single and has spent years trying to understand the Church's stance on sex, this video gives so much clarity. Thank you so much Fr. Mike!
Sacrament in Greek means “mystery”. There is an element of mystery given to Christ as a means of his presence and influence in the Church. Fulton Sheen gave a speech saying sex is a mystery as it provides (as Christopher West says) the ecstasy of the love between the members of the Holy Trinity. Yes, sex is holy and Christ is present and influential in the act of marital intercourse. Also, God allows his creation to share in His creating powers. He creates, but lays the blueprints for it in the male and female reproductive systems as a gift for the spouses. That’s just mind blowing.
I think you mean the Latin word "sacramentum", which roughly translates to "an oath to the death" It was used by Roman soldiers to swear by oath they would carry out one's duties even to the point of death.
Greetings: amen 🙏 alleluia: honored Saint Michael McGivney, pray for us ; Esteemed Saint Maria Faustina , pray for us ; Revered Saint Padre Pio, pray for us
I absolutely, totally feel, "why didnt they tell me that before." This is wonderful, so beautiful. If i would of had this train of thought at, say, pre-teen/teen, i would of spent years with Such a better approa ch to this subject. I know i had to fall to learn and change, to be worthy of the these graces that have now been bestowed on me, but....i could of avoided so much sin and incorrect thinking. I could avoided so many offenses to Christ. This is an epiphany to me now. This makes so much sense. This just feels....right. Thank you God, for ringing me to this video. Thank you God for Father Mike and his abiliry to communicate. Thank you Father Mike for having the boldness to talk about this.
Wow! What a wonderful response to such a beautiful video. I could not have said it better. Fr. Mike needs his own tv show. I believe now is a perfect time when there’s so much confusion in the world. He has a deliverance about him that can capture the world.
I'll raise my hand to that as well. I struggled with this subject so much in teens and 20s and regrefully did not have the right approach. I could not make sense of my natural kind of "guy thoughts" and the teaching of the Church where I was almost told to sort of just suppress it, which did not work at all. Now I understand what it is about. This makes so much sense.
@@freddo6941 same. Hearing this confirmed by the Father was very good for me. I had to roughly come to most this conclusion on my own dealing with all the natural things you'd expect. I have a friend struggling right now so this video is very timely for me.
@@robertortiz-wilson1588 absolutely. I realized this in my own life as well , but I wish I heard it articulated this way much sooner. Like anything, Satan can manipulate you. He can manipulate those natural desires and take you towards lust, hedonism and pornography. But these desires are not in conflict with God. Satan's way cheapens it. It's about a desire to share yourself in unity with another in a way that honors God through the sacraments. It's not that sex is bad, its that it is so amazing and holy, but using it the wrong way brings dishonor to the gift that God gave us. And wheather people realize it or not, they can see this play out in real life. Having sex carelessly leads to so many physical, emotional and mental hardships. Sex within holy matrimony is incredible and beautiful ,and leads to the best thing in life, the creation of new life. It's so obvious, yet so easy to miss and Father Mike explaines this better than anyone I've heard.
I read somewhere that sex is for the married the way celebrating the Mass is for priests. Both are, in a sense, sacrilegious when offered by (unmarried/unordained), but a super beautiful thing when entered into by those with the right to do so.
I think if we go out and proclaim the sanctity of marriage with the same vigour we go out proclaiming pro-life, all the work we do for pro-life will be so much more meaningful. Yes, Life begins at conception, but more so, life begins at the point of the sexual embrace. The sanctity of life is preserved, when the sanctity of marriage is preserved. Our silence on divorces, premarital sex, sex in general has led us to this stage where no one wants to listen to the advocacy of pro-life. That's my opinion.
Civil divorce is often emblematic of underlying sin, but it is not in itself a sin (the sacrament of marriage extends beyond, which of course is why we can't divorce/remarry without a declaration of nullity--i.e., the "marriage" was never valid in the first place). I'm more troubled on the Church's silence on abuse--emotional, sexual, physical--in relationships and in marriage. Some priests can still waffle on calling out abuse as a sin and often push those being abused to stay even when in danger. It's a problem that needs to be addressed from the pulpit and in pre Cana.
The catholic girls are the ones getting pregnant when they're teenagers making welfare babies because they aren't allowed to have birth control or abortions
While I agree with the good points made by Sheldon and K.M. (gonna go ahead and ignore the hate coming from Cyrus), it's so much easier to criticize than to help. As someone who worked for a pro-life nonprofit, we sometimes had people reproach us with these sorts of arguments: why aren't you doing more to promote chastity, why aren't you focusing on helping unwed mothers, etc. It can be very disheartening to those who really are working hard to make the world a better place to hear "why aren't you doing more?" Instead, I would turn the question around and ask, "what are you doing? How are you reaching out to those being abused or teenagers believing lies about sex?" Sometimes all it takes is being an awesome guest speaker at a youth group, or writing to your pastor to ask about starting a ministry for abused spouses, asking if he will address it in his homily. Be the change you want to see in the Church!
My boyfriend and I didn’t wait…it hurts to think about Godly love being absent from something that was so special and intimate. We’ve since stopped completely and for over a year now have been trying to actively avoid slipping up until we discern marriage. It’s been tough but I know it’s worth it.
I wasn’t able to fully understand everything father Mike said in the video. I am a new believer of god and still confused if se can have premarital sex or not. I heard many say we can’t, but some say that people have interpret this saying wrong…and that we can have premarital sex if we are in a committed relationship leading to marriage or if we are engaged. Please help!
@@cheenouthao7112 you are not allowed to have sex outside of marriage. Ever. Even if you plan on marrying that person. A reason (if you need one) could be: what if that person dies before you two get married? Now you’ve had sex with someone that is not your spouse nor will ever be your spouse. It is hard but you must wait. Good luck and God bless ✝️
Framing sex in sacramental terms makes the teaching make sense. I wouldn’t walk into a confessional without having the preparation and completing my first Reconciliation. I wouldn’t eat the Eucharist without formation or First Communion. So I wouldn’t renew marriage vows via sex without first getting married. This is great!
Thank you Fr Mike. Like most Catholics who did not know the holiness of sex I get frustrated that the Church never taught the Theology of the Body. Im blown by what you just revealed about the sanctufying grace and renewal of vows everytime I'm intimate with my spouse. Well, better late than never , so please , please Holy Church, teach this to the generations as they grow and go through Catechism. It's so important to hear all this as you are framing your thoughts when you are getting into your teenage years.

This is beautiful. I civil married my wife 5 years ago and for x reasons we haven’t been able to do the sacrament. We had babies and it’s difficult to plan a wedding. But anyway, what I wanted to say is that I always felt like having sex with my wife meant something special and wasn’t just sex. It was love and just having her and being with her in an intimate way meant more than the act of sex. I could never put it in words but now I understand that I really feel like I am renewing my vows everything I’m with her. Thank you Fr. Mike. God bless us all.
I am a practicing catholic. Being a 26 year old female I have never had sex cause I have always wanted to save sex for marriage. But society makes me feel like there is something wrong with me to be 26 and never had sex. It can really get to me sometimes cause everywhere around me is couples who go on dates and sleep with one another and It's almost as if the Sex determines if they have the chemistry and if the relationship will last.
Keep standing on the word of God! Keep waiting. Yes, the pressure is high because the stakes are even higher. May the Lord Jesus keep you. Phillipians 1:4-6.
Sex absolutely does not define a relationship.Yes it’s an important part of a marriage or long term relationship depending on what your religious stance is. As the saying goes, you do you. If it feels right for you to save until marriage then that’s what’s right. Don’t feel pressured by what ‘everyone else’ is doing. Or might not be doing, Remain true to yourself.
There could be something wrong with you if you're not driven to have sex starting at puberty. It should be chemical and genetic motivation for sex is biological and to produce children. If you've been living over a decade with no sexual or reproductive drive you should probably see a doctor about it
I think that’s why it’s called a conjugal act or something like that. Imagine this. I’m not married or even dating a future spouse yet, but I can just imagine this. You and your spouse go home and you say to each other “let’s renew our vows.” Such beautiful imagery. I’m even more committed to chastity now although I have been committed to wait until marriage since I was a teenager.

Not a Catholic but listening to Fr. Mike I'm beginning to understand why some say the Catholic Church is the one true church. I had never heard anything like this.
As someone who grew up in evangelical purity culture (and is no longer evangelical), this is such an interesting, and maybe even healing, teaching to hear. Resources on recovering from purity culture keep saying that sex is holy, but I feel like this teaching was always the missing puzzle piece for me: a sacramental view. Thanks Fr. Mike.
My priest mentioned this during our pre marital counselling. Loved it! Sex is amazing when you wait for marriage. My husband and I waited 10 years. Best of luck everyone!
Agreed, but you just don't absolutely know what's waiting there on your wedding night. Neither men or women. Otherwise, it's obvious that the church would discourage pre marital sex. Fornication is a total sin and the bi products of irregular sexual union are ultimately going to destroy people's lives. It's easy to have you life destroyed, in case you don't know.
Well, I am not in agreement. Sex between two people is a learning curve requiring open communication and time and lots of patience. The idea that it happens by magic and you move from chastity and fear of going to far to breathless bliss is a myth that lots of religions seem to embrace.
@geoffcaflisch1352 I never said sex was amazing the first time you do it. Yes, we had to go through awkward and even painful moments before it got great but the amazing part to me was that I only got to experience that with one person. So that is my definition of amazing sex!
Father left out a very important clarification: When in a state of grace...and NOT including contraception. Vital point that Catholics need to hear and understand.
@Gracie of course- just needs to be said explicitly because otherwise people assume wanting only 2 kids whenever they are "ready" to have kids 3+ years into marriage is being fruitful.
@@MC-lw8dh Yes, it is licit on account of it being a valid marriage. If anyone is not properly disposed to receive the grace of a sacrament - for whatever reason - then they won't receive it until they change and fix the problem; but this is a different issue from either the validity of the sacrament or the rights accruing to the receiver of the sacrament. The duties, obligations, and rights of marriage all remain even when/if a spouse is not in the state of grace.
"... in a state of grace" is the most important part. I've been told that some spouses are doing abusive things during the act of sex. So even though they're married, I don't believe this particular type of behavior during sex are "in a state of grace". Important to keep in mind. 🙏
I agree but what does “in a state of grace” mean? It probably excludes things like BDSM but what about certain sex positions or oral sex? Does anyone know more about this?
That was one of the most beautiful ways of explaining that. Those of us who are malformed or undereducated in the faith have no idea this way if thinking exists in the church. Thank you Father Mike for being such a great teacher. God bless you.

Hi Fr, love your sessions. Just a quick answer to why nobody knows this about the teachings of the Church is because the teachers at schools don’t know themselves. I went to Catholic school for 13 years as did my wife and we have learnt more through people like yourself and many many others then what we learnt at school and now my kids are going so we are hoping to teach them and not rely on schools. Thanks so much for the time you take to post and explain, GOD BLESS YOU 🙏
I loved the video, thank you very much for giving this kind of information that changes lives. About a year ago I discovered the Theology of the Body thanks to Father Mike; and since then I started to study it and share it with my acquaintances. It is very important that the church talks more about these topics, so that people understand this kind of teachings and see them more as a gift; and definitely, if Father Mike writes a book about this, I would buy it from the first day; he explains the topics in such a simple but at the same time so understandable way. God bless you, From Mexico

Thanks so much for this invaluable info you've shared, Fr. Mike! I wished this was being shared publicly in schools when we were young. This is actually more intuitive, friendlier version than the one public schools teaches kids about sex. This is how it should be taught from the get-go as a solid foundation for the youth to avoid them from sinning into their adults lives. I'll definitely share this clip to more people out there. God bless. 🙏
Yeah, just over 10 years ago I was learning sex ed at a public school. The whole focus seemed to be, "have sex, but be aware you are putting yourself at risk" and the class was advocating for things like birth control and condoms, etc. It was basically like a scare tactic. Rather than like a class telling you what sex actually is or what sex is actually for.

Please marry a Catholic, you can be the "domestic Church" in a much fuller way and can both bear witness to the same Faith to your children which is far more effective for handing on the Faith.
This is absolutely incredible, Father Mike, and also so beautiful to know and hear. All these years of my life, I have not heard it explained like this. Truly an eye opener. Thank you for being you!
This was interesting to listen to as someone with totally opposite views. I don't believe in any religion and I believe in sex before marriage (absolute for me), living together before marriage etc. But to be able to listen to someone express a different opinion in this manner was greatly informative. I hope it helps me understand a little bit more about where others come from.
I appreciate your curiosity but this is actually just one of many views on sex in Christianity, I personally reject most of what he’s said. Though obviously in that case it is also beneficial that I learn as well. But sex is one of the most controversial things in general apart for religion and politics so it’s not surprising that people disagree.
Am Adventist and I approve this message, for us marriage, tithe and Sabbath are holy. This is a profound understanding of the sacrement of marriage, sex is a form of worship and must not be abused .
Great! Wish there were a Pre- Pre-Cana for couples contemplating marriage. I've seen so many couples go overboard with weekend bachelorette parties, numerous showers, lavish receptions... only to end up divorced a few years later. I attended a lecture on the sacraments at the International Institute of Culture, a true gem in Philly. Matrimony & Holy Orders were paired. Basically, those two sacraments are for the other. A priest is to help his parishioners get to heaven just spouses are to do. If I had had known that prior to getting married, I wouldn't be divorced now.
This is fascinating and really helps me grapple with why sexual activity outside of marriage (and even certain activities within) can be a problem. If sex is understood as a renewal of the marital sacrament then any activity outside of that should be understood as abuse or misuse of a sacrament. That really helps me nail down why this is so important
This is very wrong.. He said nothing about procreation which is the main goal of sex if not the only one.. This might be one of the most Dangerous Sermons i've ever heard.
amazing! why aren't we teaching this to our kids? I know now that when me and my husband have a kid I am going to tell him or her this. thank you so much father Mike. God bless you

Right , lovemaking is love making, but would that only be reserved for married couples? What about same sex couples. Should they not seek lovemaking with someone they love of the same gender? Just asking that’s all
Why am I just hearing about this now? Fr. Mike, please make this talk available to all priests!!!! I would have lived my life very differently had I understood this so many years ago.

I so agree with you.
Thanks for the information

I absolutely, totally feel, "why didnt they tell me that before."
This is wonderful, so beautiful.

Such a better approa ch to this subject.
@Denzil Pillay it is also sadly because we have poor teachers and bad leaders
Both are, in a sense, sacrilegious when offered by (unmarried/unordained), but a super beautiful thing when entered into by those with the right to do so.
what about all the single young people?
What an interesting and frankly, powerful perspective! The logic follows. Thanks for this comment.
@@terrymunoztrujillo483 may they grow to learn and understand God. I’m glad I waited.
@@terrymunoztrujillo483 ...who are really committed to each other??
You don't *really* commit until you're married though.
Couldn’t agree more @Sheldon.
How does this work within the Holy Family? Mary and Joseph never did this.
This is why abstinence before marriage is so important, great explanation!
I am jewish, but this video confirmed to me an important intuition about sex which I've always had, without realizing it fully. Thank you.

Hold on dear may mother Mary be your helper in this fight of purity i pray
Keep standing on the word of God! Keep waiting. Yes, the pressure is high because the stakes are even higher. May the Lord Jesus keep you. Phillipians 1:4-6.
Sex absolutely does not define a relationship.Yes it’s an important part of a marriage or long term relationship depending on what your religious stance is. As the saying goes, you do you. If it feels right for you to save until marriage then that’s what’s right. Don’t feel pressured by what ‘everyone else’ is doing. Or might not be doing, Remain true to yourself.
Hold firm and pray to the Lord for the spouse God will send ! Don’t give in! You will be blessed! you have heroic virtue!!!
You and your spouse go home and you say to each other “let’s renew our vows.”
Such beautiful imagery.

This is so inspiring!
Very few couples would or could wait ten years but honestly, they may not have sexual intercourse but they certainly engage in sexual behavior.
Father left out a very important clarification:
When in a state of grace...and NOT including contraception. Vital point that Catholics need to hear and understand.
@Gracie of course- just needs to be said explicitly because otherwise people assume wanting only 2 kids whenever they are "ready" to have kids 3+ years into marriage is being fruitful.
So is sex within a Catholic marriage but outside the state of grace licit?
@@MC-lw8dh Yes, it is licit on account of it being a valid marriage. If anyone is not properly disposed to receive the grace of a sacrament - for whatever reason - then they won't receive it until they change and fix the problem; but this is a different issue from either the validity of the sacrament or the rights accruing to the receiver of the sacrament. The duties, obligations, and rights of marriage all remain even when/if a spouse is not in the state of grace.
What happen at menopause zero libido
"... in a state of grace" is the most important part. I've been told that some spouses are doing abusive things during the act of sex. So even though they're married, I don't believe this particular type of behavior during sex are "in a state of grace". Important to keep in mind. 🙏
Good point.

I agree but what does “in a state of grace” mean? It probably excludes things like BDSM but what about certain sex positions or oral sex? Does anyone know more about this?
I never knew this. But when you put this way, everything makes more sense.

Fr Mike, I've been married for 32 years and never heard these words before. Thank you
Díficil encontrar a alguien que entienda el sexo de esta manera, pero gracias padre Mike.👍🙏
I love your enthusiasm, and your love for God is obvious.
You make sense . I’m not Catholic but, many friends are . Still I love the Ceremony of the Church . Been fascinated for Years . God is Amazing . ❤️❤️
