OMG THIS RIGHT HERE! I was recently playing Gen 6 Rando Ladder and missed 14 out of like 18 Toxics I've used over the session. I don't believe I have ever been as salty as I have been on that evening in my entire life LMFAO
I think the most memorable part of Toxic for me was when Joey did his Ubers spotlight series back in gen 6-7. It always feels particularly prominent in the tier for several reasons, mainly chipping down Pdon or Arceus since Ubers roster feels weirdly bulky. The "put it on a timer" line is probably one of Joey's most iconic one liner lol
One cool thing about Toxic is that it’s actually good in Gen 1 UU as an anti-dragonite measure. Once Dragonite sets up agility the battle becomes extremely one-sided with it outspeeding everything and getting to wrap for 32 turns. However, dragonite is often a good dugtrio switch in, so if you run toxic in your dugtrio, you can cripple it with toxic and prevent it from wrap spamming everything since it’s now on a timer.
Its also used on Kangaskhan, Venusaur, and Persian to stop agiliwrap sweeps. Dugtrio does have other uses for it though, since toxicing a Gyarados or a Tangela as they come in when expecting a Dragonite switch can be exploited heavily because of how quickly they get worn into KO ranges (for example, Dugtrios Rock Slide goes from a 4HKO to a 3HKO vs a poisoned Gyarados).
thats why i love this side of the pokemon community. people trying to find the objective usefulness of a strategy even if its unorthodox or sounds weird or bad on the surface level. and of course trying to make creative new solutions and strategies even though the game is so well dissected as it is.
I think one of the reasons these videos are so good is because of the strategies it brings into the light. For example, I would’ve never thought of leech toxic celebi in adv but now I’m going to try it after work. Thanks BKC.
It's funny you mentioned leech seed and toxic in Gen 1, the two effects are bugged in those games; Leech Seed does the same amount of damage as toxic, and heals based on that damage when they're stacked. Not really that important in comp since switching out ruins everything, but it's pretty busted in single player.
I love that Toxic managed to float to the top thanks to the fact that every other status got nerfed in gen 7. Heck, if you really wanted to, you could run Salazzle to poison Steel and Poison types so everyone can be poisoned. Would love to see Corrosion on more Pokemon because the gen 7 nerfs are the worst.
Corrosion is one of the reasons Salazzle is my favorite Pokemon to use in comp, and is usually my go-to lead, even in OU. Though recently I've switched Toxic out for Taunt since Toxic rarely got used much on it while I use my other three moves in most battles
I used toxic Lando in gen 7. Not sure if it was very efficient, but the ability to cripple almost everything that doesnt take a big chunk from eq was pretty nice (except celesteela/skarm), and it lets you skip both rock slide and hp Ice at the same time to fit Knock Off and Rocks. It was basically a harder hitting gliscor but with intimidate instead of PH and more offensive oriented to deal with weakened Cleffable/Tapu Fini
Hey BKC i would love to see a playlists of all the videos you have made about specific moves i really like them an it can be a bit annoying to find them sometimes. Also love your content, keep makeing great stuff man!
A versatile weapon that can be used in a variety of strategies. From walling and stalling to aggro teams trying to crack a defensive core. Oh Toxic, how we love thee ☠️ “______ is badly poisoned!”
38:50 what is probably the most important part of this history lesson. BKC, in one of these days, would you also create some history about how a certain type influenced the tier?
One small thing I'd like to mention is defensive lando runs it quite often in gen 7 as a way to cripple other landos and tangrowth on the same move, so he's actually one of the best toxic users in the generation
I do wish that Smogon didn't allow legacy moves sometimes. Gen 8 taking toxic away from almost everything was really nice for the game in my opinion. While having your wall be toxic immune is a nice trait it always feels bad when an otherwise good wall gets ruined by a toxic coming from anywhere. I much prefer it as a fairly exclusive move.
BKC, as someone who grew up enjoying Pokémon but never looked into the competitive meta until recently, I appreciate these history lessons more than anything! 👏🏼🙏🏼
Fun fact: gen 8 toxic users were more or less the same, outside of rain/sun offense. Pex, lando, tran, buzz, ferro, aegis, sometimes even blissey and clef
I think it would be intresting if you mentioned other metagmes then OU in another video. I now that is your area that you have the most knowlage about but i still think it would be fun.
Hey Kev, will you be covering your CI5 run on this channel? I would like to see that, maybe in form of battle narrations explaining your decision making and giving some insights. Greetings
Does anyone else like 1 later of Toxic Spikes due to how much switching happens? Turn 1 poison is the same as turn 2 toxic, and there’s so much in and out that it punishes switching more.
Toxic outdamages at turn three, I’m a big fan of one layer too because by then you have already done 37.5% and that amount of chip is borderline fatal for most mons . The move was introduced in gen four where rocks were also introduced so the amount of hazard damage gets out of control fast, especially if something is sand weak and is bleeding out 18% a turn, or 12.5% with lefties which is still outrageous when most leftovers Pokémon are passive or bulky and will take a lot of turns of abuse for the damage to stack up. BadPsn really messes with blissy where you can chase it out with things it normally walls. Considering most tspikes are layed early game, I think dpp with its lack of team preview almost always should just be one layer because it is more effective against more matchups, but maybe in team preview formats there is room for some creativity into some matchups.
Look up "Rejuvenation V13 OST - VS! The Master of Nightmares" and "Archetype (3rd Layer HQ) add them to your background playlist, trust me it's worth your while
Kinda sucks Toxic is useless in Gen 1, the same gen when Steel don't exist and Poison Types were practically nonexistent except maybe Tentacruel and Victreebel
I'm so glad gen 8 nerfed the fuck out of toxic. It didn't make any sense how 99.9 percent of pokemon could learn it, and its honestly very spammable. It's not a bad strategy but its an incredibly uninspired one if that makes sense. It takes no planning, just toxic then stall, and it'll work for almost every team that doesn't have steel or poison types of their own
It what allowed a lot pokemon to stall and shutdown recovery spamers. Hate it gamefreak as of the past two gens have been nerfing stall since alot pokemon depended on these tatics.
No matter the gen, no matter the mechanics, I'll still slap my desk when I miss it

Especially on Xerneas. Either Toxic poison or paralysis can be really good ways to halt Xerneas from dominating a team.

I used Toxic on Tapu Fini to deal with defensive Rotom-Wash, Zapdos, Tornadus-T etc.
the unexpected toxic is the deadliest

Have you done a pokemon showdown meta game tier list? if not id love it from someone like you whos experienced so much. would it be too inflammatory?
He did, "top 10 metagames"

to me if there is any move that feels absolutely self explanatory its toxic but because its @BKC im still going to watch the video
