  • Less than two years previously, in December 1970, just as the Tony Williams Lifetime were grinding to a halt, two of its members -- John McLaughlin and Jack Bruce -- took part in sessions for Carla Bley's self-funded triple album Escalator Over The Hill. Documentary-maker Steve Gebhardt filmed some of the album's long gestation and this glimpse, of John and Jack rehearsing with Carla and drummer Paul Motian, was included in his eventual documentary, also titled Escalator Over The Hill (released to limited screenings in 1999 but unavailable commercially).

      Do you really think John McLaughlin is struggling to find the right key?
      He's found it, he really has.
      And now he's bringing it home all the way from a different star system, you see?
      It's music, Tim. But not as we know it.

    16mm film and sync sound was expensive to shoot and edit. I have the album and love the photo book, ah - but to have Jack and Linda Ronstadt do their vocals on Video? LR might have sent her vocal by courier back to the UK, but this album should have been bathed in 16mm film or a 1970 Sony AVC-3200 light studio camera with 4” viewfinder could have been used to Video the entire 1970-71 project. And stored in a vault. We’re lucky to have a few clips- such as this one.

    Bought the original album release, along with a tiny few other 'multiple public members' or whatever they called us.
    purely because Jack Bruce was on the album.
    Played twice, thought, what a load of self indulgent **** …. , album still in pristine condition, gave to my brother last year
    Still of the same opinion - it's again!

    Is that a Gibson Melody Maker with an added neck humbucker?

    • @wohltemper
      @wohltemper 8 років тому +4

      I have two photos of JM with what is definitely a Melody Maker - one he is with Tony Williams (the guitar has the narrow head stock, single bridge P90 of an MM, not a junior), and the other is a MM with an added humbucker. But as you say this looks like a Junior.

    • @wohltemper
      @wohltemper 8 років тому +1

      LOL that's Gibson quality for you! Pity you can't post pics on YT, but if you google "gibson melody maker john mclaughlin" the first photo that comes up is a B&W photo of JM in a white shirt and trousers holding a Melody Maker with P90 and the distinctive scratch plate.

    • @wohltemper
      @wohltemper 8 років тому

      Yeah I had a MM 2010 reissue, cheap as chips and fun to play but sold it a few years ago as the neck was heavier than the body! Thanks for the info but you really don't need to lecture me about guitars ;-)
