Beautiful socks! I love the vibrancy of the green. I also don't get second sock or second sleeve syndrome because I'm just too excited to knit the next sock, especially since I also don't usually aim for a matching pair. It's fun to see what different colours I get in sock number 2. RE socks requiring 100 grams of yarn, I think that's the specified amount and the amount that you get in a ball of sock yarn because they give you enough yarn in those sock yarn balls to knit a pair of calf-length men's socks. My socks usually take about 60g. I knit crew-length, and I have a size 39 foot. The other 40g, I usually knit stranded with additional yarn scraps for another pair of socks. This also has the advantage of giving me a lighter pair of socks and a thicker, warmer pair of socks from the leftovers.
I already managed to get two pair of socks (one with contrast heel and toe, and one with a fun coloured pattern) out of 1 skein of 100 grams of sock yarn, and I still have enough to make a third pair I think

Same on the DPNs. I tried magic loop once and all the cable management made me want to throw my knitting at a wall. I haven't tried with the 9in cable needles, but I have knit a sweater on cables, and the cable management (the stitches get bunched up on one side of the needle and I have to keep sliding them continuously to the other end) still made me want to throw my project at a wall, so I don't think I would take to socks on cable needles well. DPNs are great because you knit a row and everything is exactly where it should be and you don't have to constantly slide things from one place to another
@@MijnWolden Honestly, it could just be my needles. There's a bump between the cable and the needle that makes sliding the stitches up so very annoying. Which is what I get for using 30+ year old needles I suppose
When I was looking to knit my first pair of socks, I remember reading that one skein of yarn was more than enough for my size. So I bought one skein. It turns out that people were talking about 100g skeins, whereas in France, sock yarn is usually 50g, but I didn't check. Lesson learned ! I wonder if you don't have the opposite problem.
Oh I'm currently knitting a scarf with a very cute leaf pattern that I think will go great with your green/brown yarn! I'll post a link in the patreon discord.
Wow so awesome. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t imagine spinning sock yarn. The smallest I have been able to achieve is dk weight, tho I mostly get worsted. I of course I use a spinning wheel not a spindle. I have knit two sweaters with my handspun and a few hats but socks are in dreamland. I have seen a lot of spinners say that when they achieved super thin yarn they have a hard time spinning thicker yarn so since I like the worsted weight I don’t give myself grief about it. I too love knitting socks on double pointed needles. I have tried all the ways but always come back to 5 wood needles.
It is indeed pretty easy to teach yourself how to go thinner and thinner on a wheel, but getting back to a thicker yarn is harder. I myself like fingering-DK weight yarns for both spinning and knitting, so luckily my default yarns also match my knitting :D
Wonderful knitting and your yarn is very good! Team DPNs also 😅 I only use DPNs for my socks, except the fact that with my style and experience of knitting, I now use only four of them: it is faster for knitting and more convenient for dividing my count of stitches between front and back of the socks…thank a lot for your sharing, so interesting!
I love your bog witch socks. I too am not convinced that we need synthetic fibers for sock yarn. I have a couple of pairs of handspun socks that are made with alpaca/shetland blend and they have stood up to wear & tear better than many of my socks made with commercial sock yarn that includes nylon. Take care & have a great week!
@@MijnWolden I think that the longer staple length of some Alpaca and even some wools can help to make socks wear better. At least that's been my experience. Maybe some commercial yarns use the less desirable cuts, so they are shorter and need to have some synthetic fiber added to make them stronger. When we handspin, maybe we are just picking nicer fleece 😃
I've never really tried the tiny circulars, but I hate magic loop with the burning passion of a 1000 suns, so whenever I'm presented with the choice between doing that, or using DPNs, I choose DPNs. Which also comes with the bonus that to lots of people it almost looks like I'm doing witchcraft which sparks joy XD
magic loop haters come out of the woodwork! I feel like I'm yanking that stupid cable this way and that for like half the time that I'm knitting. Much rather have DPNs - which also has the benefit of me not needing to buy a whole other set of circs for hats/socks.
Did you know that Helloween and the indian Diwali festival fall on the same date this year? It's the festival of light but I am in a small place where it mainly means crazy people throw unsafe fireworks. But we go for a special meal that day. I am just binding of my small pluma morade shawl while watching and it might work for your yarn as it is flexible to the yarn amount you have. Enjoy your weekend
my favorite needles for knit socks is a long circular pair. Also I have hear/ from experience it doesn't take 100g to make a pair of socks( i saw someone on reddit who used the whole 100g and it make a really long pair of socks( i think up to their knees if i remember correctly)
I love those socks, they would be my absolute perfect ones. You see, this is why I want to be able to knit.. socks.. but I just can't get the hang of it. I end up with button holes I didn't know I was making and extra stitches everywhere 😢 I tried again just a few weeks ago, bought new shiny needles for it and now I'm back spinning for a crochet project and my nice shiny new needles are holding my bobbins on my lazy Kate 😕
@@MijnWolden Yes I could, but it's the knitted socks I love. The ones I've crocheted don't have the same comforting stretch to them, probably something I'm doing (or not doing lol)
My preference when it comes to sock knitting is DPNs. The reason is that when I finish the stitches on one needle and go to the next it just takes a couple of movements and everything is lined up for me to start on the next lot of stitches. By contrast, there is a lot of fiddling around to work the magic loop and I feel that slows things down. I haven't tried the crazy trios - at nearly $50 AUD that seems like a lot of money for something I may or may not like. And I'm running into problems with some of my favourite DPNs. They are a well known brand, steel and really nice, except I can smell them. It hasn't got to the stage where I can't use them but it is disconcerting. Your finished bog witch socks are beautiful, I love them! I may make some Halloween elf socks this year, I haven't made made a firm decision on that. I have a pattern for human Halloween socks for next year, and ideas for what I want to spin for the yarns. You're right regarding the amount of yarn needed to knit a pair of socks. My feet are about median male size & I have squeezed two pairs out of the yarn intended for one pair. I should bear that in mind when planning the Halloween sock yarn spin. I think you've got more than enough leftovers to make a matching hat or cowl.
It depends upon the pattern and how far along I am whether I use 3, 4 or 5 needles. If I've only got a very few stitches, I'll work with 3 needles, for a larger number of stitches, especially if the total is divisible by 3, I use 4 needles. Some sections, such as the gusset are easiest with 5 needles.
Add one ply of Romney, Border Leister, or Cotswold to you softer wool plies, or blend one of the luster long wool fleece fibres with your softer fleece to make your sock yarn. This is what people did before 1850 to make sturdier sock yarns.
I love the socks!! they came out so pretty! :) I love the bog witch vibe! but I feel like you missed the opportunity to sing the "Let's get whimsical" song ;) hahahah so now you're only missing a spindle spun skirt to have a full spindle spun outfit! :O as for the style of needles I preffer, I think its the short circular needles that you can make only one sock with haha, I tend to end up with less ladders that way, BUT I need to bring a set of dpns to make my toes or make some kind of short row toe and sew them xD
Bog socks bog socks bog socks I also sat and worked on my socks too, which are looking far more like a witch's circle than they have any right to be. Y'know, magic and fire and dancing? Yeah...they're nice socks. I have not gotten to spinning my own sock yarn yet, though. Haven't gotten thin enough. Though maybe I should give it a go! I'd just have to find some nice fiber to practice with.
@@MijnWolden I have plenty of those, sadly. See, the problem is: I like socks. I like a variety of socks. But I’m particular about them. Thick and warm socks won’t fit into my shoes. And then when I find a pair that’s like “oooh, it has some superwash wool content”, I buy them, AND THEYRE TOO BIG! And of course the socks that fit and are comfy inevitably get a sock eaten by the dryer…so all I have are my old socks that I’ve had for 10+ years. Which isn’t a problem, but they’re developing patches that need mending. Not to mention that they have to have a good cuff length, because ankle socks drive me mad. And I don’t have enough Pride socks to begin with, which I need to fix, and… Yeah. I have THINGS about socks. I blame it on the ‘tism. BUT! I will figure it out. I expect if I just practice enough, I WILL make a thin enough yarn for socks! Just gotta get my WPI and grist down.
Your socks turned out great! I prefer magic loop, but have 3 pairs on the go using 3 different methods - 1 pair with dpn's, 1 pair with magic loop and 1 pair knitted concurrently on 9 in circs. I don't get 2nd sock syndrome much anymore. 😊
I love these bog socks! Being a bog hag, I need them for my total bog haggishness. 💚 If I may ask, whaaat are those needles?!! You've probably said, and my flighty attention missed that Filled with pointy whimsy those needles are! Definitely magical dopamine wands🪄💜💚🤎
What’s your favorite type of needles? Is it based on projects? You’re using double point needles in this one for socks, but 2 different sets. Do you have a preferred length or material of DPNs? I’m a toe-up, TAAT, magic loop girlie, but I like talking to folks about their tools. I’m building a circulating collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks at my local library, so I’m finding myself down the rabbit hole of asking people what length, type, material, brand, and style of tools that people find are the best fit for them. I apologize for all the questions, but my brain is collecting info like the chaos info goblin it is. 😂
Love those sock, the colours and the pattern, thank you. I like making socks on dp needles and they need to be wooden, not metal or plastic. Why would you want your socks to look like store bought, isn’t that the whole purpose of spinning your own yarn? I like your knitting shenanigans, thank you😉🇨🇦👍💐
It's not that I want them to look storebought, but boasting your handspun yarn is as consistent as the ones you find in a store is kind of a flex I think haha
I think your woolen spun yarn is lighter weight- thus 50g makes socks. Have you calculated the grist? I loved your spooky bog witch music with the close up of the socks! Looking forward to your next videos!!
@@sewobsessedmama8851 Becks at tinyfiberstidio did a UA-cam video on grist, and I understand that she also made some sort of calculator using Google docs or sheets that you can access.
I didn't for this yarn, no. I also don't know if the pattern itself called for 100 grams, it was just a guideline that I was thought. So, yeah, probably my yarn was much lighter than commercial sock yarns.
Tbf you wouldnt get such fun colors from a store bought yarn! I love doing socks magic loop on circular needles; Im not against dpns and occasionally use them for the ambiance but its just a touch too fiddly for me most of the time. Funnily enough the recent purchase of a book of gansey patterns has made me want to get giant dpns to knit a sweater tho. I will probably not do that because Im trying to reduce my general consumption but.....
@@MijnWolden: Depends upon your knitting style. If you knit English style with the right needle tucked under your arm, they're good. They also work well with a knitting belt.
Hi!! I´m Anita from Argentina. I recently started spinning, and I´m very excited about it. I discovered your videos, and I find them fascinating. Do you have an email address? I´d like to share some things. Thank you!!!!
I love how your socks turned out! I’ve been wanting to start my YT channel but am stuck. I can’t comprehend how one goes about managing multiple craft projects and all the video footage for each one or even how one finds time to do it all while working a full-time job. Do you have any tips or resources for someone such as I? 🧵💕
My pro tip is to work on the videos in increments and not just trying to edit it at the end, for you will forget what you said at the beginning, and this way you get a better vision on the story of the video. I have a google sheets content calendar that I colour code on how much time each project will take me. If I get too much red squares next to each other, I'm in a danger zone, because multiple long project videos in a row is not workable. (How much I would want it... 3 sweater projects planned on 3 weeks just doesn't work) It helps a lot to know your own crafting speed and how much time you'll be able to spend on it in a week. I just have my video footage in folders on my pc, nothing fancy. Also, I make videos every week, but that's not a prerequisite. Find a rythm that works for you. Or no rythm. I have a husband that does like 80% of the work in the house, that helps a lot for being consistent.

Sweaters I prefer on circulars, even if the sweater is knit flat, but for small circumferences, no thank you :)
@@MijnWolden Honestly, it could just be my needles. There's a bump between the cable and the needle that makes sliding the stitches up so very annoying. Which is what I get for using 30+ year old needles I suppose
My sister used to run a fibre supply company and she always told me to add mohair to wool for sock yarn. Not kid mohair though 😊
Yes, I've heard that too
I like to knit my socks on DPN's. Love the swamp witch socks. Mine are knee high charted witch socks. They wont be done by halloween.
Knee highs are awesome
When I was looking to knit my first pair of socks, I remember reading that one skein of yarn was more than enough for my size. So I bought one skein. It turns out that people were talking about 100g skeins, whereas in France, sock yarn is usually 50g, but I didn't check. Lesson learned ! I wonder if you don't have the opposite problem.
Yeah, I seem to have the opposite problem
I was knitting my own Halloween socks on DPNs when you talked about DPNs, so I felt like we were in a real little DPN twinsies moment!
Twinsies :D
Great minds... ;)
My wool/alpaca knee highs also still look very fresh after a year of wear :)
Lololol 😂😂 Sometimes you just KNOW it’s not for you. I feel the same way about single points.
magic loop haters come out of the woodwork! I feel like I'm yanking that stupid cable this way and that for like half the time that I'm knitting. Much rather have DPNs - which also has the benefit of me not needing to buy a whole other set of circs for hats/socks.
I love a clear opinion like this :D
Did you know that Helloween and the indian Diwali festival fall on the same date this year? It's the festival of light but I am in a small place where it mainly means crazy people throw unsafe fireworks. But we go for a special meal that day. I am just binding of my small pluma morade shawl while watching and it might work for your yarn as it is flexible to the yarn amount you have. Enjoy your weekend
I did not know, how interesting! Have a great festival. I'll look up the pluma morade shawl :)
my favorite needles for knit socks is a long circular pair. Also I have hear/ from experience it doesn't take 100g to make a pair of socks( i saw someone on reddit who used the whole 100g and it make a really long pair of socks( i think up to their knees if i remember correctly)
I used up all of my handspun sock yarn last year, and they indeed also became knee highs
You can crochet socks maybe?
Oh yes, I would also be bothered with needles that I can smell. Especially if that smell would linger on my hands afterwards...
My size 43 / 11 US feet require almost 100g of sock yarn for a pair of socks. Smaller feet require much less.
I'm a generous size 42 and I don't use nearly that much yarn - maybe you are knitting longer leg sections than I am. (My feet are also quite broad.)
Yes, size 38/US size 7 are smaller indeed
It depends upon the pattern and how far along I am whether I use 3, 4 or 5 needles. If I've only got a very few stitches, I'll work with 3 needles, for a larger number of stitches, especially if the total is divisible by 3, I use 4 needles. Some sections, such as the gusset are easiest with 5 needles.
Maar da's dan weer 1 naald minder dopamine... beetje afweging maken haha
:) I love the bog witch vibe! but I feel like you missed the opportunity to sing the "Let's get whimsical" song ;) hahahah
so now you're only missing a spindle spun skirt to have a full spindle spun outfit! :O
as for the style of needles I preffer, I think its the short circular needles that you can make only one sock with haha, I tend to end up with less ladders that way, BUT I need to bring a set of dpns to make my toes or make some kind of short row toe and sew them xD
Spindle spun skirt... that's not a challenge I'm going to take serious now haha
@@MijnWolden hahaha xD I guess it would be something like 2x the amount of yarn you needed for you sweater? that would be a massive project xD
@@etienne6916 And I prefer my skirts long and my sweaters cropped, so make that x3!
Bog socks bog socks bog socks
I also sat and worked on my socks too, which are looking far more like a witch's circle than they have any right to be. Y'know, magic and fire and dancing? Yeah...they're nice socks.
I have not gotten to spinning my own sock yarn yet, though. Haven't gotten thin enough. Though maybe I should give it a go! I'd just have to find some nice fiber to practice with.
There are sock patterns out there for 8 ply (double knit) socks, would you be able to spin that?
@@resourcedragonI very much could, but then they wouldn’t fit in my tight hiking shoes ._. I am very tempted though!
In house socks maybe?
And I don’t have enough Pride socks to begin with, which I need to fix, and…
Yeah. I have THINGS about socks. I blame it on the ‘tism. BUT! I will figure it out. I expect if I just practice enough, I WILL make a thin enough yarn for socks! Just gotta get my WPI and grist down.
@@TJtheBee I believe in you, you can do this! (But fair warning, oftentimes it is harder to spin a thicker yarn after you've gone so thin)
Your socks turned out great! I prefer magic loop, but have 3 pairs on the go using 3 different methods - 1 pair with dpn's, 1 pair with magic loop and 1 pair knitted concurrently on 9 in circs. I don't get 2nd sock syndrome much anymore. 😊
That sounds a lot more like 6th sock syndrome :D
I love these bog socks! Being a bog hag, I need them for my total bog haggishness. 💚 If I may ask, whaaat are those needles?!! You've probably said, and my flighty attention missed that Filled with pointy whimsy those needles are! Definitely magical dopamine wands🪄💜💚🤎
They are KnitPro (in the US called Knitter's Pride) Symphony needles. You can also get them in interchangeable circulars or regular knitting needles.
@@MijnWolden yes yes! I use the interchangeable s!!
Make matching socks for your husband! ❤
I don't think there'd be enough for that, her husband's very tall and you usually need the full 100g for men's socks.
Also, he has enough socks :D
wood, 20 cms. But my wooden 2mms were somewhere else so I went with the metal ones...
The circulating collection sounds so cool!
@@MijnWolden 🧶🍂🍄🎃Happy Socktober or Halloween! Thanks for your channel and all the effort you put into it!💐
I think your woolen spun yarn is lighter weight- thus 50g makes socks. Have you calculated the grist?
I loved your spooky bog witch music with the close up of the socks!
Looking forward to your next videos!!
Is there a way to calculate it? I'm always interested in learning something new.
I have some big dpns from my grandmom's needle stash. They're... awkward to work with to say the least
@@MijnWolden: Depends upon your knitting style. If you knit English style with the right needle tucked under your arm, they're good. They also work well with a knitting belt.
@@resourcedragon Well, yes, but I don't knit English style now do I? :D
I don't spin, I just crochet, but I wouldn't be able to tell those socks were knit from hand spun yarn
The socks are gorgeous!!!! i now want some as well T_T
Also do you have pattern recommendations for sturdy socks? like the ones you wear on hikes?
The ones I made on hikes were just plain socks, not really with a pattern. So I guess any vanilla sock pattern would work
🧶I like your socs👍😊
the socks came out so great
It's the Stories of Ice sweater by Wildernestknits! :D I made it in ouessant and alpaca handspun
@@MijnWolden thankyou! I will look it up, I like the dots on the yoke
Hi!! I´m Anita from Argentina. I recently started spinning, and I´m very excited about it. I discovered your videos, and I find them fascinating. Do you have an email address? I´d like to share some things. Thank you!!!!
Hi, information on how to contact is on the page ;)
I try to have a few videos ahead but always seem to be working on my videos in a time crunch and yes it is stressful.
Hopefully I can get a bit back on schedule next weekend :)
自分もdpn派です。
Excellent!!! \(^-^)/
@@MijnWolden those are all such great tips. Thank you so much! I especially love the Sheets content calendar idea.
