    The trick about Mk Vs is you can make them out of parts cannibalized from earlier (and later) armor types. That's basically how they were in-universe.

      I never really understant this statement as most mkV depicted have fairly specific traits that aren't easily depicted on kitbashed marines. The cabling on the legs and helmets, most notably. From a lore perspective, it works, but if you tried it with minis, most people seeing them wouldn't see mkV, I suspect.
      That being said I do like the hodgepodge look.

Deciding what units to get, maybe even walking in to a store and buying, putting together and painting, then culminating with a few games. An absolute beginners guide basically, holding our hand, and walking us all through the steps!

There could be the Thunder Warriors, mutants, all sorts of techno-barbarian militias and raiders, and even mk II Space Marines. • @JonesySurvived
    @JonesySurvived 2 роки тому +28

    MVI was absolutely being rolled out during the heresy, HOWEVER....the idea that it was rolled out in totality seems questionable. The Raven Guard got the kits early (hence the Corvus name), so having them having total beakies seems OK (my own RG army is this way).
    But for other armies, the lore left with me with the impression they had only being slowly replacing early armour so having an abundance of VI in with a mix of other previous armour seems sensible. The reason I don't think it should be a totality of VI is because VII came along and superseded it before the end of the heresy.
    "The new armour, later dubbed "Corvus" Pattern Power Armour in honour of the Raven Guard, was placed into full-scale production only a few solar months before the outbreak of Horus' rebellion against the Emperor, re-designated as Mark VI from Mark V by the Mechanicum to account for the inclusion of the many stop-gap field modifications and repairs into the Legiones Astartes order of battle."
    "Mark VII armour was developed during the last stages of the Horus Heresy"
    So as far as I'm concerned only the Ravens should have a total beakie army, and the rest should have some level of a mix.
    But of course, I'm wildly biased here!

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  2 роки тому +19

      Nobody is suggesting anything was 'in totality' - Legions still have units with differing supply timelines.
      But we could imagine that, say, Dark Angels weren't in a position to get much MkIV, and it was therefore 'rare' in the First Legion, and STILL have 5000 to 10,000 Marines wearing it.

    Great video! Awesome to see and hear about the original Epic Space Marine box (I still have mine in storage).
    I remember being drawn to the Dark Angels chapter from that period due to the infantry stand banners (lil stickers on a plastic pole) for them being a per fess sable and vert (black and green) and I liked that because it was the same as House Atreides battle flags from Dune... which I loved, and still love!
    Now 172 years later, I take up the hobby again, and that's the chapter I still want to play... Dark Angels!
    I think the DA were also one of the suggested main protagonists from the original Space Hulk box, which is also in storage, ha ha.
    Nice to have some Wombles back again, they hearken back to the origins of GW, which was using Alternative Armies 'generic space knight' models, which you can still get hold of. Ion Age Nobles, I think??

      Mk6 was first field-tested by the Iron Warriors and the Salamanders. They were not too impressed by it, and wanted something heavier, akin to the mk3. Ot was determined the armor needed a decisive large-scale deployment, and Perturabo decided to try and kill off the project (at this point designated mk5) by giving it to an under-strength Legion, the Raven Guard. The Raven Guard ate it up, performed well in these "beta test" suits, and made a ton of suggestions on how to improve the armor for the final release (this modified design is what was officially termed mk6). The Raven Guard got the first shipments of production-grade mk6 to supplement their modified prototype versions, and Alpha Legion intercepted a few shipments.
      So Salamanders and Iron Warriors would have some, in minor distaste, Alpha Legion would have some, and Raven Guard would have the most, especially post-Isstvan. Space Wolves also secure a large shipment in mid/late Heresy, but probably wouldn't have it in any real numbers at, say, Prospero. Imperial Fists stationed near Terra would have a limited amount, secured at great cost alongside mk4 during the invasion of Mars.
      Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and White Scars would probably struggle the most to secure it, as these three legions were fighting on the galactic fringes and had very extended supply lines, to the point that the former two were unaware of the events on Istvaan for a spell - they would have very small amounts. Ultramarines were also cut off by virtue of the warp storms splitting the galaxy in two, so would only have gotten their first couple shipments before Calth. Thousand Sons would have very few, as Prospero happens pre-Isstvan by a couple years iirc.
      Other legions would have limited quantities as they receive their first shipments of armor, but the doctrines of some kept it out of favor. Death Guard were a heavy assault type, as well as World Eaters and Iron Hands and so didn't appreciate the advantages (stealth, improved auto-senses) of mk6. The Night Lords were in hot water, and were already on the fringes of being sanctioned when the Heresy broke out (and would have rebelled on their own if it weren't for Horus' little rebellion), and so most of their examples would be scavenged from the dead.
      Emperor's Children, Word Bearers, and Sons of Horus would have gotten their early allotments, and probably put them to use. Horus' machinations led to better resupply to the legions he trusted before the Heresy even began, and this goes back to the roll-out of mk4 to replace/supplement mk2 and mk3, so his fellow Betrayal legions and the Word Bearers would have gotten priority. They still would be largely mk4 though.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  2 роки тому +8

      The real answer is ALL OF THEM. Like, all the info above is correct, but it's also a massive civil war with constant material needs.
      If you just made another 1000 new iron warriors and your local forge world is making mk6 armour now, you're not gonna retool all the machines back to mk3 or refuse the shipment.

    • @stealthvulture5594
      @stealthvulture5594 2 роки тому +3

      No contradiction here :) as I said, this Legion would struggle to get it, that Legion would only have a few, etc.
      With the Iron Warriors, remember the old metal/finecast upgrade sprue? One of the helmets, my second favorite from the set, was a beakie, but it had extra armor plating, making it match the Iron Warrior philosophy better. For that Battalion, I would encourage continuing that concept with additional armor plates and bonding studs across the whole beakie, doing whatever you can to reinforce that armor. I think there is a lot of potential there! (Now I need to do up a squad like this, something expendable, like Despoilers or Destroyers)

I know, I know,, I could just take bolt pistol or, let's say, flamer from other set, but it's good to have those options (each mark has some unique weapons design too), not to rely on having exact leftover from another set in the first place.

      @@tinyfishhobby3138 that's my exact thought. I know, some people like primaris for "more dynamic poses" (which is kinda stretch for basic units who have this same poses you would get with firstborn equivalent anyway just without this slight variance to not look like exact copy. Poses are good for more special characters). I want compatibility, I don't want to need to pull out hobby saw for simple kitbashing of basic troops, I want to just build from parts like legos. Firstborn kits have possibility for up to 6.2 different sets to kitbash (excluding Thunder Warriors, but including mark 8 torso and padded hips) not even count other possibilities, like veteran bling edition, jumpacks and dynamic legs and heavy weapons sets. It's not about Heresy alone, but 10 000 years worth of scenarios you could put your marines in.

    1. I *really* hope that those beakies are going to come with properly-scaled missile launchers, rotor cannons, etc.
    2. there's a mostly-forgotten mark of armour in pre-second edition catalogues: "Death Eagle"; it's somewhere between Mk. 6 and Mk. 7, there's apparently lore relating to it (although I've never encountered it), and only three (monopose and metal) designs of miniature feature it

    It’s a long time ago so I might be misremembering (I’ve also been out of the game for 30 years) but I seem to recall back in the Rogue Trader days, when the Heresy was only semi defined, whilst Mk6 armour featured heavily in the artwork, until the release of the plastic box set, Mk7 armour was pretty the default for models/play. We all sort of assumed that the armour used in the game was what was available in the Heresy as it was a tiny bit of fluff back then. Love the Videos they’re helping me catch up!

    While the beakie make sense during the heresy, it's still really annoying to get a whole box of just beakie. Firstly it doesnt scream Horus Heresy to see everyone equipped in exactly the same thing. Secondly I differ from your opinion and think it really makes more sense for loyalists than for traitors, both substantiated by most of the material. It's pretty hard to find picture or text where you see traitors in Beakie, and the various text mainly support that. Of course they would have had some, as you say there would always the couple thousand development models, they could have gotten some forge worlds where the production was about to start, some scavenging, etc., But it would still have made so much more sense to go away from the super uniform sets of armor, even more so for the traitors, and make variety and mix & match the main theme.

      1. Mk5 is called Hersey Armor because, in lore, it was the scraps and halfassing problem common in random panic wars like the Hersey. Namely, the forgeworlds weren't retooled for Beakies, nor standardized for the kind of galactic combat of the Hersey, and so legions tried everything possible to make Stop-gap measures. Those ball-barrings on the armor? That is balls of Ceramite from melted armor for example used to save time and energy on mass production.
      2. Although one would assume newer armor would just be outright used and earlier versions thrown away, the truth is culture has a massive importance on chapter-standard-armor such as why Mk2's / Mk3's are so common in the Death Guard. The Mantis warriors kept using the mk5, and the Beakies where early adopted by the Raven Guard for example.
      3. Again culture, many of these marines and the chapters they came from standard to builds and styles of armor fitting the culture of the armors. Black Legion standard is Dark Mechanicum standard, which itself is a standard different from Mechanicum standard.

    • @4_am
      @4_am 2 роки тому +2

      Mk 5 is a hodgepodge of previous marks, reclaimed damaged armor and prototypes being made in different forgeworlds, all cobbled together and called Mk5.
      Mk 6 was in new fluff, tested on the raven gaurd, not set in to mass production untill later in the HH.
      It is not a thing in the early HH.
      The traitors should have a lot less of Mk6 due to this.
      Each legion has different tastes on what they like are armor.
      Mk6 was designed to have more maneuverability and be more stealthy than previous Mk's.
      Most legions disliked Mk6 due to it being slightly weaker that Mk4. Raven gaurd love it due to being more stealthy.

      thanks for the replies people.
      Sorry, what I mean is, if mk6 was the main armour in the Heresy as per this vid, why was it not designated Heresy armour.
      Further the mk5 was bits cobbled together from armour marks late in the Heresy because of lack of resources logistical problems etc, so how come suddenly there is enough to make 100's of thousands of beakies?
      Seems a bit unlikely to me, maybe I am missing something, very likely indeed, I don't write this stuff so doesn't matter.
      Maybe they should just straight up retcon it, dunno, they look pretty cool anyway so I'm not complaining.

      @@itsallpointless6501 in the 80s -90's there was only mk6 armor, this was what space marines looked like. There wasn't diffrent armors. That is why Ian is saying its fine. He showing old books and saying look its fine.
      As the fluff has evolved and making the other Mk's it is now that Mk6 was made during the middle to late HH. Tested by the raven gaurd, plans stolen and some number of suits taken by the alpha legion.
      Mk5 being diffrent armors bolted together, with what ever resources, unused suits, and battlefield scavenge they have.
      You need to remeber the scale of warhammer. There are thousands of forge worlds all churning out diffent equipment, only hand full of forgeworlds getting the plans on how to make Mk6, there would still be meny making the old Mk's.
      There would be relatively few suits even for loyalist legions, untill very late in the HH and none at the beginning.

      Studded shoulderpads are basically marines trying to kitbash their armor so it doesnt fall apart or is stronger under incoming fire. The studs are molecular bonding studs.
