All right, KRAZEEIZATION, I am more convinced of eventually buying one! In my case a Rega Planar 2. However, I recently bought a used, Odd Rega Planar 3 plinth; tonearm post was drilled closer to the spindle bearing hole, with 3 small holes along the post hole for the tonearm. I refurbished, repaired this odd Planar 3 plinth. I installed a Linn Basik Plus Tonearm with phono RCA Cable; and eventually found the 3 longer machine screws for the tonearm bracket. I mounted, aligned a new Audio Technica AT95E MM cartridge. I Installed a new drive belt, new motor suspension belt, 2 motor mounting machine screws, and a new Rega dust cover. Now I'm going to solder in a new capacitor in the motor assembly because of very slow speed.🔉🎵🎶
I made my own Rega turntable using all the available upgrade parts, the plinth is a copy of the standard Rega 3 but twice as thick, this is a piano finish high gloss black, the motor is a 24v Dc, with speed control, ceramic bearings and s/steel sub-platter with twin belt drive, the arm is a rewired and foam filled RB250 with Ortofon 2M blue cartridge, it has a 22mm acrylic platter and sits on polished alloy spiked feet, it sounds great but I am taking it apart again because I have spent 2 months working on a new platter.
Rega makes a pretty big deal about specifically avoiding exactly what you do at 2.23. From the Planar 3 manual: "Don't lift the centre hub out from the main bearing, The bearing is factory assembled with a film of special thick lubricant. If the centre hub is removed this film may be disturbed."

I have closely decided to eventually buy the Rega Planar 2. I am also curious about later on installing another higher performance phono cartridge. In fact, because as I perceive, and hear it, the cartridge matters to a point of 75% of the fidelity, and difference in the sound of music. Afterward it is the tonearm, platter, and the accuracy of the motor, which should also be taken into account, even with belt drive turntables. Would you recommend a cheaper table and a better cardridge (planar 1 with bias cartridge f.i.) or a better table with cheaper cartridge (planar 2 with carbon cartridge fi)? Since prices of these two options are comparable ...
Tonearm and cartidge are more important than the turntable design in itself. Whatever, planar one and two are slightly faulty designs. I would go used P3 or RP3 (if it where my money of course).
I'm trying to decide between P2 and P3, I plan to changing the cartridge to either a Denon DL110 or an Ortofon Quintet Blue. Would the Quintet be a waste on the P2? My Planar 1 motor was noisier than hell out of the box. Rega says it's due to being improperly stored on it's side or upside down. Running it in for a while has helped, but calling these motors "low noise" is a joke. My SL-1200 is dead silent.

I think the Rega P1-P3 is meh. The thing is a technics1200 mk2 is just so much better and the price difference between a used one and a P1 is 150 in Sweden. So I Went with technics.

Is the built in anti-skate reliable on these turntables? I'm one of the many people who are very disappointed with the Audio Technica LP120's faulty anti skate. So many brand new records skip even with the anti skate set to the maximum and when setting the needle down on the record it abruptly jumps a few grooves on the first song. Have also been told the built in pre-amp is not the greatest which would explain me experiencing a weird cut out in the audio between songs on certain LPs, almost like the speakers are being turned on and off. I am looking for a new turntable, but would like one that is the least problematic and that I'm not going to waste my money on.
Yes it is, this is on totally different level compared to AT"s poor copy of Technics SL1200/1210. Different arm style, different anti skate mechanism(the only complaint about those anti skate things I hear from AT and other SL copies owners, never heard any complaints from Rega, Pro-Ject, Mcintosh, thorens, Dual etc), it's a different style of record player.
I recently purchased a rega 2 after months of comparisons and reviews. Tbh, i was disappointed to hear a ground hum/buzz present on my speakers, coming from the tt out of the box. The finish wasnt the greatest either, with a scratch on the dustcover. Also found quite a few people online complaining about the ground hum/buzz, even on the rega 3.
That's what I'm worried about with getting a Rega. What a stupid idea to have permanently attached cheap looking RCA cables. I wonder if it's because of the cables.
pitis2flie It could be but... i actually received a replacement tonearm from the shop i bought the rega from after bringing it to their attention. Its made no difference at all. Personally, i feel let down by rega, who apparentley believe that a hum is acceptable. I cant understand how a company like rega dont provide a seperate grounding lead. I would put my money somewhere else tbh.
No, it's a strange choice into the cabling design. RP1 and 2 are flawed from the start and shouldn't be bought. The chance is great you will end up with this problem.
Bob Outélama I would say that this is one of those times when you 'don't believe the hype' Don't get me wrong, i am happy with the sound of the rp2, but the whole '2 years of research' is disappointing. The 'optional plinth protectors' stick to the plinth, so when you want to flip sides or change vinyl, the whole tt lifts of its feet when lifting the dustcover. I mean, 2 years research?? its very disappointing. I reckon steve jobs is still alive and working for rega because the sales pitch is better than the product!!
i was reading some forums and a few people said they had hum and couldn't get rid of it. thats stupid its not that hard to use a dedicated ground wire. thats a deal breaker for me i think ill get an older deck maybe denon or technics.
I have a 20 year old Rega P1 without ground wire. It runs through a Digitech Phono preamp with no hum or any other sort of noise whatsoever. It uses the Ortofon OEM 50 cartridge and stylus, and sounds absolutely superb through my Marantz SR5007 receiver and Jamo S426 speakers.
depends on how much vibration it asorbs. Turntables made out of aluminium can be horrible without good noise dampening material and if mdf is used in a correct way it can absorb some of the vibrations and dampen the turntable
Leon thepro is it the price range or is it intentional to encourage upgrading? I think they also looked at what the competition is offering and also decided they didn’t need to include a better one. All those upgrades seemed to be so inexpensive I don’t see why they are charging as much as they do.
Sharing Lungs Well before only the Planar 3 existed. The other 2 are just stripped planar 3s at a cheaper price. I dont know if you have seen how they make their tables but its quite impressive. Hence the reason they are the best price for performance tables on the market. And the cart is fine, the table still outperforms others like the debut carbon with a cart that costs 3 times as much anyway.

That may be related to your preamp, maybe it is not grounding stuff so well.
Its ray-guh? Not reeeee-gah?? 😮
Ha Ha, it actually is the later according to the folks in the UK.
Hmm if the diameter of the main barring is different from table to table then the torearms can't be interchangeable..
Lol. Platter bearing size irrelevant.
does this really need a ground wire??? some people's testimonies are freaking me out, doing DIY earth wiring and all.... help please?
Ground is on the audio cable. Works fine in 99.9% of applications
Understand they solder a ground wire from the blue wire to the side of the vertical pipe. If it's done correctly, then there is no difference.
i was reading some forums and a few people said they had hum and couldn't get rid of it. thats stupid its not that hard to use a dedicated ground wire. thats a deal breaker for me i think ill get an older deck maybe denon or technics.
Not impressed when I hear MDF construction
depends on how much vibration it asorbs. Turntables made out of aluminium can be horrible without good noise dampening material and if mdf is used in a correct way it can absorb some of the vibrations and dampen the turntable
It's REE-ga. Not REG-a or RAY-ga.
Do not be fooled here. That Rega Carbon cart is in fact a 30dollar Audio-Technica AT-3600! How dare they put such a cart on a tt at this price ranges.
leyland9999 Because thats what the price allows...
Leon thepro Wow.
+Adamania Its quite impressive indeed. Only thing I recently learnt might be better for the same price as a Planar 6 is the MOFI Ultradeck.
Boring , we want to hear them ,not just specs, it means nothing
bla bla bla
Wish you would get the pronunciation correct. Rega is pronounced "reega".
It’s Plan ar not playnar FFS!
