      What makes you see him as a top 10 pick?
      I think there's a lot to like, but I still want to see more defensively and I'm also not sure he does enough things (both right now, but also to project for the future) outside of scoring.

    • @BrentonPercy
      @BrentonPercy 5 місяців тому +2

      Mainly because of the other players I have seen in peoples top 10. Tyler practically has an NBA body now. I have been watching him since the first season of OTE and his body is the type that puts on muscle very easily, which is very important for NBA players. I disagree, his length is a great asset for defense, he's able to steal and block shots easily. Just look at his stat lines in some of his g league games, don't forget he is coming off the bench on limited minutes. He can also score and shoot 3s. NBA teams love lefty's. I just don't see why say a Rob Dillingham is seen as a 7th pick, but yet Tyler is 20s. The NBA and GLeague have hundreds of good NBA quality point guards that can be put on the floor whenever a team wants. A player like Tyler is rare. Thats why I would put him in my top 10.@@FloorandCeiling

      @@BrentonPercy Fair enough. I've been watching Tyler since his first OTE season as well and he's always stood out to me. Even then, he was one of the best players in the program - and I'm someone who generally thinks that OTE does a very good job developing players for both college and the pros.
      His bounce and length are good assets, like you said, but I think the reads he makes still lag behind some other bigs. For instance, he has more margin for recovery than Izan Almansa who also played for OTE and is a worse athlete, but I think Izan is a smarter defender right now because of his FIBA and Spain experience where he had more defensive responsibilities. That's not to say Almansa is a better defender now or that he'll be better than Tyler, but I just feel like Smith still has a ways to go in making defensive reads as a 5. He's much better coming in and helping, which would happen more as a 4 so I'm not *super* concerned by all of this, but it limits the versatility of his defensive outlook a tiny bit.

    • @BrentonPercy
      @BrentonPercy 5 місяців тому +2

      Yea I understand that, makes sense. I also may be ranking Tyler high based on his untapped potential/ceiling. I'm a huge fan of Almansa, his smarts and hustle make him fun to watch. His shooting and athleticism are killing his stock value in this draft though. He was ranked so much higher last year. Where do you think Almansa goes? I could see him being like a Joakim Noah/Draymond Green type of guy. If he's on a team with elite shooters/playmakers his game would really flourish. How fun was it to watch the first two seasons of OTE. My favourite players were Almansa, Sarr, Bryson Warren, Tyler Smith, and Big Nate. Crazy to think Sarr might be the first player drafted to OTE and first ote alumni drafted number 1 in nba. Will be a cool stat if it happens @@FloorandCeiling

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  5 місяців тому +3

      I like that Joakim Noah comp a lot, though Almansa would have to grow a fair bit defensively. I think he is smart enough to get there though, but probably not as athletic. I think he can still become a better athlete, but he's already improved so much since he first came to the U.S. that I wonder when/if he'll top out. I have him as a top 20 pick right now, but he's in a fluid situation where he could go 5 spots higher or 5 spots lower depending on team fit/context.
      I also liked Kok Yat, Bryce Griggs and Jalen Lewis from the first OTE cycle. Nate Missia-Dio too, like you said. Jaylen Martin (now with Westchester in the G League) and Bryson Warren (now with the Sioux Falls Skyforce) as well. I think the OTE to NBA path is very slept on but producing pretty positive results. Rob Dillingham, of course, is another OTE alum (although his time there was a lot briefer) who'll be a high draft pick along with Sarr, Almansa, and Smith.
      Then, over the next few years, I'm sure Bryson Tiller and Jayden Quaintance from OTE's first class will also get into the league. Two very talented prospects. @@BrentonPercy

    He is a hard prospect to read because of his definitive role for the Ignite. He was never asked to do more then spot up on threes, but I think his athletic profile offers hope that he can become more then that at the next level.

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  2 місяці тому +2

      His role was narrow, but I think it helped his draft stock. I think he'll be asked to do similar things in the NBA (shoot threes and punish mismatches), so it was a solid preview of what Smith can bring to the table.
      I do agree, though, that I want to see even more. Ideally, this would be rolling to the basket, but most of all, on the defensive end.

    He’s eerily similar to Jabari Smith as a prospect. Both 6’11 bigs who have all the wing/forward skills except actually being able to/having confidence in putting the ball on the court. The main issue for Jabari coming out was that as good as he was at the collegiate level, he was way too reliant on other guys finding him in perfect body position to get comfortable shots off. The shot making is there, but you have to have some sort of creation skill at the next level for that to matter enough. Luckily, this is a draft class where specialists should be valued much higher due to the lack of “franchise altering” talent at the top, and in my honest opinion Smith is one of the best play finishers in the class. That being the case at 6’11 and set to be a 19 y/o rookie should warrant some mid-lottery looks for sure. I have him at 7 on my board.

    • @xinevett
      @xinevett Місяць тому +2

      He’s ahead of Risacher in my opinion. Both hand in hand in terms of long term upside imo, but Smith has more projectable effectiveness if Risacher is going to be as streaky of a shooter as he has been so far before entering the NBA.

    • @xinevett
      @xinevett Місяць тому +2

      Let’s see what the Raptors do. They have to build around Scottie now, while also keeping RJ and IQ in mind. With Scottie, you need shooting (so I can see Smith coming in here at the 4) but I also think he benefits from a big who has a presence in the paint. I think they’d be happy with Filipowski, Missi or Smith.

      @@FloorandCeiling aside from shooting they also need a backup center. Zach Edey is also a good prospect. But Raps front office would be thrilled to have 6'10 6'11 guys who could space the floor, who could really hoop

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  5 місяців тому +4

      @308Karl yeah, agreed. I feel like Edey might be more of a priority for teams who need instant production. I don’t think the Raptors are on that timeline just yet, although they seemingly don’t want to be a bad/tanking team yet.
      Plus, there’s some enticing bigs in the 2025 draft too so I wouldn’t mind them targeting a higher upside center then. We’re still some time away from that, but I really wouldn’t be surprised if they loved Khaman Maluach - a 7-foot-1 South Sudanese center with World Cup experience as a 16 y/o who can catch lobs, block shots, and space the floor - next season.

      There are definite defensive improvements to make, but I think that can be partly attributed to him having played for Overtime Elite (where defense isn't particularly stressed) and now this year's Ignite squad which is also really struggling on that end.

    I was recently looking at mock draft predictions and saw Tyler at #36 with the Pacers, I think at 19 he has a pretty good start to his game as he enters the NBA, with having help defense glimpses I think he would be a 4 next to likely Isaiah Jackson in the back up front court if in Indy but considering the Pacers are looking to get wings and improve on defense overall if he were to be drafted there he would have to fight for mins in rotation and improve on the defensive reads, etc but sure does show great potential when considering he’s only 19

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  11 днів тому +3

      Another thing that would play in Tyler's favor in Indiana is that Tyrese Haliburton would be there to set him up for really easy buckets. Smith can't really create for himself at this point, and he's really raw on defense, so he needs a couple more years of development but I think he's gonna be a valuable investment for whoever drafts him.

  • @robertball147
    @robertball147 5 місяців тому +4

    Smith definitely needs to bulk up a bit and improve on defense (the latter seems unlikely while he's on the Ignite). I'll be a little surprised if he goes in the top 25, but he certainly has upside as a 30+ pick that could be realized with further development. Thanks for yet another great breakdown!

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  5 місяців тому +2

      Thanks as always! The defense is a tough one because I do think he's improved on the Ignite - at least to an extent - but the entire team is so bad right now with blown rotations, miscommunications, late rotations, etc. that it's almost like they always have to be making up for one mistake and that leads to another with everyone out of sync.
      As for top 25, I think it'll be tough for teams after the lottery to ultimately pass on a 6-11 legit shooting big who's athletic, can be effective on a low volume of touches, and has defensive potential (even if it might take a couple more seasons in the G League for him to make those NBA reads on defense).

    What do you think about G League Ignite in general @FloorandCeiling ?

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  5 місяців тому +5

      I think it's been a success, generally speaking. The goal was/is to provide teenage prospects from all over the world with professional opportunities prior to the NBA and then get them drafted into the league.
      For the most part, the Ignite has accomplished this. Since its first season in 2020, it's had more lottery picks (4) than any college program if I'm not mistaken. Just last year alone, 4 players (from 4 different countries and paths) were drafted. Even guys who went undrafted like Daishen Nix are still in the NBA.
      The fair counterargument is that maybe going to the Ignite has led to some prospects' stock falling. For instance, Jaden Hardy who went #37 in 2022 was probably predicted as a top 10/lottery pick before his season with the Ignite - but it's hard to know if he wouldn't also have struggled in a college setting. The same could be said for Nix or Michael Foster Jr, who was a five-star prospect in high school and then went undrafted before toiling in the G League.
      This season, I think what's gone wrong boils down to three things. The first is that the Ignite took on too many young players. Even at the college level, it's practically impossible to be a winning team with eight 18/19-year-olds on the roster. Then, the vets on this Ignite generation have played worse than in previous years - particularly on defense. Finally, the G League is a stronger league now than it was when Jalen Green or Jonathan Kuminga were on the Ignite. The money went up, more first-year draft picks are consistently in the league, and NBA teams are fleshing out legitimately strong rosters in the G League. When all of this happens, and the Ignite maybe rolls out a team with London Johnson/Ron Holland/Matas Buzelis/Izan Almansa all on the floor, it's just tough.

    • @rep227
      @rep227 5 місяців тому +3

      @@FloorandCeiling Interesting, thank you for your thorough response. But I think G-Ignite is not a good place to learn the fundamentals. I mean look at Jalen Green for example, despite being really talented he still couldn't make his all-star break in his 3rd year. I envision something like Euroleague teams having their U-18 or U-21 teams, simply in there to learn the fundamentals instead of "ballin". But I'm not sure how that would work in NBA's drafting system.
      I still think drafted role players should be sent to Europe and get discipline and fundamentals rather than sent down to G-Leauge, since everyone just tries to put a show in there.

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  5 місяців тому +4

      @@rep227 It's tough too because, even though I think Ignite has generally done well to develop players (Leonard Miller and Sidy Cissoko recently are good examples and I think they're doing pretty good with Ron Holland this season as well), there are also further contextual things in the NBA which can be problematic.
      Like with Jalen Green, he played for two seasons on a Houston team that wasn't learning how to "win" at all. Only this year has he significantly improved on defense - and now we're starting to see improvements as a passer, as well.
      I'm still confident he's going to be an all-star in the future, but yeah maybe those areas could've been drilled in more with the G League Ignite. I could argue something similar for how Scoot Henderson has struggled finishing at the rim in the NBA so far, but he's also just a rookie and point guard might be the toughest position in the league so it's a complex issue that might not solely be on the Ignite, the player, his NBA team, etc.
      Like you're saying, I do think the prospects who have the highest feel for the game right now - generally speaking - are not coming out of the US. The NBA and basketball as a whole are more international than ever. Even this year, the top 3 picks could be Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Nikola Topic in some order, and none of them come from a traditional American background which has historically been the most successful in the NBA. Personally, I think this is a great thing.

    • @rep227
      @rep227 5 місяців тому +3

      @@FloorandCeiling I'm a Rockets fan and Jalen Green developed bad habits under Silas and developed no understanding of the game, with your turn my turn plays.
      Green is super talented but it's either Silas or G-League or both gave him bad habits.
      He has a killer first step but the guy does not even know how to control his pace, hence he keeps losing the ball on drives and despite being talented he often just flails the ball to the rim on driving layups. That's what you expect from rookie roleplayers not an atlethic NBA player with flashes of a star.
      I think Udoka didn't bench him too much so his trade value doesn't plummet, but damn you have no idea how frustrating it was to watch him fail since we all know he actually has talent but can't use it.
      I don't think G-Ignite is that negative but it's enough to make these great prospects late bloomers. I also think Scoot will be a late bloomer too, especially since PG position is hard to figure out.

      The idea of sending drafted role players to Europe to learn fundamentals is interesting, but not possible.
      European teams play in open leagues where they are in danger of being relegated to the second division, so they are not going to run the risk of having inexperienced players (from the NBA) to develop for the benefit of those players and the NBA and not the European teams.
      Such a model could be possible, although it would not be easy to implement, in closed leagues (no promotion or relegation) such as the Australian NBL.

    Do you see a world where he could be like Lauri Markkanen?

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  28 днів тому +2

      Yeah, definitely. I think one of the most important things about Lauri's game is that he's so much more efficient when he's being set up and working out of 1-2 dribbles, rather than having to create for himself all of the time.
      He had to do that more with Utah this past season and it led to mixed results, which was fine given the team's state and how it can continue helping Markkanen's development.
      With Smith, the idea should be (and I think already is) the same. Reduce his touches and keep him as a play finisher. He figured that out well with the G League Ignite, but he's still lagging behind defensively. But yeah, he should be watching Lauri or even Chris Bosh tape.

    • @kamsimoka1594
      @kamsimoka1594 26 днів тому +3

      @@FloorandCeiling this past season Lauri was assisted on a higher percentage of shots than he was last season (over 98% of his threes were assisted). It’s even high compared to the rest of his career. I think in Utah, he’s just getting more touches and has the highest usage he’s had since his second season. He’s hyper efficient too, so it’s not bad. Smith is behind on defense, but we’ve seen guys improve on that end over time in the league. I’m not saying it’s guaranteed, but he’s also not a finished product. In this draft, if there’s someone that might have Lauri-like potential, I think he should get more attention.
      Do you also think it’s possible to experiment with him at the 3 the same way it’s done with Lauri at times? I’ve been trying to get a good feel of his type of athleticism and movement. That’s part of why the Lauri comp is interesting to me. The idea of a jumbo combo forward is a bit more interesting than the idea of a combo big (especially now that he’s actually been measuring to be 6’9”)

    When you look at film of Smith
    You will notice
    At times he looks one demential
    Offensive he is a pop and shoot player. Not many drives and kicks and not creative offense for teammates
    What position is he - on offense and whom can he cover on defense ? Intriguing mismatch because of his heigh. But primarily he plays outside of the paint by the 3 point line
    He does not play up to his 6-10 height
    He fails to fight for rebound
    He will get the ones that fall into his hands
    On defense he will not challenge opponents in the paint
    He can’t switch and cover smaller quicker player outside - they will beat him and he is slow to recover
    Not an NBA starter. Good rotational player off the bench
    Seems to fit in with the Miami Heat offensive mismatch system
    Draft pick 16 or higher

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  3 місяці тому +2

      I agree with some of the improvement points you brought up, namely his defense (this is Tyler's biggest area of growth) and his rebounding (I think he's gotten better over the year, but he can leverage his size better).
      Still, I think both of these areas are improvable. The defense in particular is learnable since he's coming from two environments in Overtime Elite and this year's G League Ignite where that side of the ball isn't exactly a point of emphasis.
      On offense though, I'm much higher on him than you are. He has parallels to Jabari Smith or Taylor Hendricks with his easy pull-up game as a big, but with how he can also punish mismatches on the inside. Even if Tyler isn't overly physical, he can use his size to post-up a bit or just shoot over the top. Right now, I have him in the lottery.

      @FloorandCeiling  Місяць тому +2

      Philly's roster is wide open outside of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Ricky Council will be there next season too and he looked good late in his rookie year, but he's not really a long-term piece.
      I wouldn't mind this pick for the Sixers, mostly because I'm fairly high on Smith. However, I just feel like Daryl Morey and the Sixers front office doesn't really care about drafting young prospects right now. They will if they have to, but it seems mostly as trade assets rather than foundational pieces.

      It’s interesting that Milwaukee went with two long term projects in Smith and AJ Johnson though.

      He needs to improve his rebounding and defense, which I brought up in the video and you also mentioned. Thing is, he hasn't really been in great contexts yet for that development after coming through Overtime Elite and then spending a year with objectively the worst G League Ignite team ever on defense.

    To me Tyler Smith could potentially be that 6th man of the year candidate several times in his career bcuz he is so unselfish he came to the Ignite knowing his role on the team he doesnt need to shine 100% of the time he is content wit not being that #1 guy ie Andre Iguodala Jamal Crawford Lou Williams

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  Місяць тому +3

      What you're getting at is that Tyler Smith knows how to play a role and that he understands how to play within himself to the benefit of his squad, so I agree with that.
      Now, he needs to expand his defensive awareness and ability. I don't have too many massive concerns offensively, even if he is a little bit one note.
