    Summary:
Although poor quality audience recordings have circulated among fans for many years, presented here for the first time ever is a direct recording of Frank Zappa's early show on October 13, 1978 at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. This night is notable not only for containing two of the most memorable performances of the 1978 World Tour, but this concert was also bass player Patrick O'hearn's debut gig with Zappa.
The concert contains a wide ranging selection of material both old and new and a good balance between Zappa's humorous social commentary songs and his more challenging instrumental compositions. It kicks off with a standout example of Zappa's seering guitar work on "Deathless Horsie," which would finally see release on his Shut Up & Play Your Guitar series several years later. In terms of outstanding solos, a highly improvised "City Of Tiny Lights" featuring Denny Walley in fantastic form on slide guitar, is certainly a highlight. The same can be said of is "Pound For A Brown On The Bus," which immediately follows. This serves as an extended showcase for Ed Mann on vibes, followed by electric piano and then synthesizer solos by Tommy Mars and Peter Wolf. Closing the set is a complete performance of the Apostrophe album classic "Yellow Snow Suite.
The two encores are also notable, beginning with a non-orchestral performance of "Strictly Genteel." This grand finale composition to "200 Motels" is followed by "Dinah Moe Hum." On this final encore Zappa adamantly insists on sing-a-long audience participation. When he notices a guy wearing a Rolling Stones t-shirt who is not joining in the fun, he specifically singles him out. So determined is Zappa to get this gentleman to sing along, that he vows to end the performance should he fail to participate! Following an unsuccessful second chance to engage said audience member, and true to his word, Zappa suddenly stops the performance and concludes the concert.

The tone Frank's able to achieve during his solos is absolute pleasure to my ears.

‘’I have a basic mechanical knowledge of the operation of the Instrument, and I got an imagination and when the time comes up in the song to play a solo, it’s me against the laws of nature.’’ ~ Frank Zappa ~

Got to see him twice same era, late 70’s. I was 17 or 18 & FZ fans were an eclectic bunch. We knew a master musician named Frank, and were blessed for it.

Frank has a way of schooling . He suceeds in teaching us that 'The sky is not the limit, it is merely just the beginning', . (KRB).

I think it was Patricks last gig with Frank Zappa. His debut gig was in October 1976...

I think you got it wrong as far as this being Patrick O' Hearn's debut with FZ. Patrick plays in the album "Zappa in New York" which is from the 1977 tour. On the 1977 band you also have Ruth Underwood on percussion who was playing with Frank in the early seventies and was replaced by Ed Mann; and Terry Bozzio on drums who played in the "Bongo Fury" album with Captain Beefheart (1975 or '76) and was replaced by Vinnie Colaiuta ... you probably meant to say it was Arthur Barrow's debut :) .... footnote: Patrick and Terry got together later with Warren Cucurullo who played second lead guitar for Frank in 1979 (Tinsel Town Rebellion) and Terry's wife Dale Bozzio who does the sexy chick in "Joe's Garage" (Wet T-shirt Night) and the four of them with a keyboard player formed "Missing Persons" who was one of the hottest and one of my favorite New Wave bands of the 80's (all Zappa alumni, no wonder :) ... Terry and Vinnie would go on to be 2 of the greatest drummers in history, Terry in Rock (one example: the band "UK" where he replaced Yes/King Crimson's Bill Bruford behind Crimson's bassist/lead singer John Wetton) and Vinnie in Jazz (Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joni Mitchell; and in the top of pop behind Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Paul Simon, Faith Hill) and both of them played for Jeff Beck at different times

Zappa in New York was recorded in December 1976. Ruth did some overdubs in 1977 for the album, but this is where Ed Mann came into the picture. Ruth did not tour with FZ in 1977. O'Hearn enters ca. May 1976 with upright bass overdubs on The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution.

I got to see terry bozio with Jeff beck at riverbend in Ohio long time ago. It was impressive. Recorded it on my new mini disc. Terry Bozio, Bill Bruford and Alan White are thunder gods.
