Nicholas Lewis nah honestly what have u seen wtf? Askellad was a good character he didn’t develop much from the get go he was amazing we just had to find more bout him. Canute became a different person in a matter of seconds, that has to be one of the shittiest character development. U gotta take time or at least foreshadow it. Thorffin doesn’t change till farmland saga so really season 1 had pretty much no good character development it has other strengths but character development ain’t one of them.
Same hahaa, I haven't read my favourite manga One piece properly in years but just skimming, but this anime made me read vinland saga and catch up in like 3 days. So fucking good.
The thing I liked the most about this masterpiece was the theme of being a true warrior. As you said there are no good people in this world but Thors still tries to be one, he chooses love instead of hate and even if it means sacrificing his life it will be a necessary price to be paid. His death changes the life of askellad, thorfinn and everyone that experienced it, even if misinterpreted at first it's impact will be Infinite and will eventually lead to thorfinn's salvation (probably). Canute understands the path of love, he gets what "good" truly means, but he still thinks that death and deception are necessary to reach heaven on earth and so when he's gonna be in a position of power he will commit the same atrocities that he hated so much. To think that so many themes can be explored in just the prologue is jaw dropping and it's already in my top 5 favourite anime of all time, it's truly a must watch.
Askeladd was remorseful actually, its heavily implied that he himself hated the life he was leading. Infact,he was especially remorseful about killing 'the person who died in episode 4',and also about the fact that someone with such huge potential like Thorfinn(since he is thor's son) was wasting his youth running behind something worthless BECAUSE of him.Which is why he gave him the push in the right direction in the end. Well he redeemed himself anyways He says the words 'let me rest' in the end. That pretty much sums up how he felt about his life.
Vinland Saga is a perfect historical anime as far as you can predict the past and the characters that were shown felt like real people Truly an amazing series and can't wait for a S2
I myself am an agnostic atheist. But one theme i love especially about Vinland Saga is how it lowkey presents christian values/talking points/ideals in such a way that it's understandable why people would prefer and choose these values. And everything without being preachy about it. So much that most people won't even notice that it happened.
MARK PEARSON, calling the priest "communist" and "leftist" without understanding his (very systemically presented) thought process, or what either of those words actually means in political theory... Let me guess, you must be American. (Hint : both have a multitude of meanings/interpretations, none of which could possibly be applicable in this situation.) As far as I am concerned, Makoto Yukimura's perception and portrayal of Christianity is both intriguing and surprisingly insightful, especially when you consider his cultural background. The priest's teachings might seem distorted at first glance, but they absolutely make sense given the experiences his character would have, *and* are actually in line with the New Testament.
As a fan of the manga, I can say, without a doubt that this anime did it justice. The character growth of Thorfinn past the prologue is out of this world and I would love to see it animated. There are some nitpicks that I could make about the anime, but it is still awesome and loyal overall. This story is a masterpiece!
Please nitpick here then, I'd like to know what could have been better. Apart from some frames like the Thorkell as Demon scene, I cannot find any faults with the anime as someone who has Vinland as their favorite Manga.
I like how the characters don't understand love. They don't understand good or justice. It is all about survival in a time when people didn't have the luxury of being moral humans.

Perfection. This is a epicly great review of Vinland Saga, you hit each and every single point that needed to be made in this video with charm and facts and clearly expressed the many ways that Vinland Saga is one of the greats in fiction ever. You also talked about one of the most important things about Vinland Saga, that each and every character has their own story to tell and just like in real life and you never know if or how they will effect or change the world around them. Also the insane amount of effort, drive and love for the story and the characters to make this anime work was unbelievable and I appreciate that! You also even went meta and talked about "Twitter" drama or current fan opinions and cut or censored or rearranged events that took place as well. Years ago I tried to get into Vinland Saga because it was one of "those" stories in the same vein as Berserk, One Piece, JoJo, Vagabond , Detective Conan or Kingdom where it's very highly recommended but it's way too long or can never be made into a manga etc. But I'm extremely glad that I didn't because even tho I missed the fun of belonging and interacting with the community as things and events took place, I feel and know that I can view the story with a way better understanding and viewpoint that I could have before. So after falling into Vinland Saga and listing to your reviews after each episode and then taking the time to read the manga once the season ended I can say for sure that Vinland Saga is a must watch and is one of my all time favorites!
Thorfinn is such a badass- more so after Askeladd, with his 'redemption' phase (though in the world of Vinland Saga that is a hard thing, which makes it all the more better seeing him grow up to be like his father).
*starts with obligatory Thorkell is Fairest Maiden comment* Seeing one of my personal favourite stories ever getting a damn fabulous adaptation by those who have genuine passion and care for the manga is just beyond satisfying to experience. I would hug Wit Studio if I could. xD The art's eyegasmic, the character writing and drama's great, and whether they were one of the mains or one of the most side-like of side characters, I honestly loved nearly everyone (and even the characters that I wasn't much of a fan of - Floki can fuck off a cliff - I still enjoyed and appreciated what they offered to the story). Definitely one of my main highlights for Vinland Saga is how the story combines what was written in historical fact with what was written in the Old Norse and Icelandic sagas (and, of course, Makoto Yukimura's own creative additions and changes) - certain scenes made me feel like I was experiencing parts of that old Scandinavian literature but through the eyes of a modern storyteller. Which I love and seeing well-done retellings of these old stories and histories is just soooooo much fun. (*0 *) And thank you for recording these videos - I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts~
Yh You know I've been wondering about that, because so far Askeladd has been the most interesting character for me, but I can see how Thorfinn could have more interesting growth. At least enough for me to continue to stay interested.
I started reading random chapters of the manga that take place in the future and damn! Looks like Thorfinn goes through some shit. Like he was a slave? Willingly? Wtf is going to happen... I cant wait for this series to get animated in its entirety. Im not a big manga reader, but I dont know if I can wait for Vinland to get animated. Im also interested in seeing the path and choices that Canute takes.
As someone with Welsh and Norwegian roots, I really started to love Askeladd's ulterior motivations. And to have the same voice actor as Madara Uchiha made it perfect. I definitely slept on this series too long.
So rewatched this as you saw in a recent comment on a different video and Just wow Like binging it for a rewatch? Seriously flies by so fast And to me personally the very beginning is a bit slow but after that it picks up for me and I can’t help but get hooked And the episodes just keep getting better as they reach the conclusion of what’s only considered “the prologue” Like wow…just wow Those emotional high moments especially for the last few episodes really got to me all over again the second time It’s just so well done! Can’t wait for what manga readers dub “farmland saga” I recently recommended the series to some family Cousins and a sister and a bf who I personally think can appreciate the series
i was just joking about ashy mad lad having a thing for killing dads and raising their sons, but the thing about a great show is that the themes and character relation arcs you'd love to see, often ends up being what you get cause the author knows how to properly tie off themes. it capitalized on the themes of messed up father-son relations, pulled ashylad and blond eren through the emotional beats i was hoping they'd reach. it even had that little moment, you know, where thorkell wonders if he should have joined thors, wondering what he'd found, what he's seeing beyond this world they're trapped in. it was just subtle enough
It's really tough to make anything that hits as hard as Attack on Titan but Vinland Saga does it. Askeladd and Thorkell alone are worth the price of admission, but Wit blows the animation out of the park.
WIT has truly done an outstanding job with Vinland Saga. This adaption is exactly what a manga of this caliber deserved. As you said, you can really see when a studio puts so much effort, love and respect in what they do. Since now Vinland Saga should be more profitable to WIT than Attack on Titan (since they're in the production commetee), I REALLY, REALLY hope they'll be able to fully adapt the next arc, and hopefully the entire manga. I've already read it in the manga because I couldn't stop myselft, and OHHH BOY, I really can't wait. Meanwhile.. I also can't help but feel sad for Berserk.. seeing how AoT and Vinland Saga have been adapted.. just imagine if WIT got to adapt Berserk too. They anime community would probably implode in a black hole of joy. A man can dream, right?
Honestly, I'd be interested if even in 10 years if Wit was able to do a fresh start on Berserk what it'd look like. At this point and time I feel like they'd have the best chance at making everyone happy but who knows what the future will hold
this video is one year old, if i get a response until July 30th i swear i’ll read vinland saga all the way through, on july 28th i finished the anime and Vinland saga is one of the best shows ive ever seen.
I loved the ideologies and religions showcased in the prologue. It's realistic, and interactions between them feel natural. In fact, I think that's why we all like Canute's development.
I absolutely loved the slave/farm arc. It hasn't been animated yet but man it broke me. This new Thorfinn and his interaction with Einar and later Arnheid... man I can't wait for that to be animated. After that part I could trully tell this series will be one to be remembered like Berserk. It's inspiring, interesting and full of well explored perspectives that make it even better once you read the mangaka's ideas in the Q&As found in the manga or just his personal comments regarding the story.
Speaking of Cobain, I always thought Urahara from Bleach looked like Kurt Cobain. Bleach is also the name of Nirvana's first album. Wonder if Kubo is a Nirvana fan??
I really felt for Thorfinn in episode 23. Either leave and abandon your life's goal, or stay and keep dueling the guy who you'll never win against. And either way Askeladd comes out on top of both scenarios. (Or he would've at least. What an amazing scumbag)
And then Askeladd dies in the end, in his own plot completely unrelated to Thorfinn. Guess it shows the idea, "Never seek revenge. Rotten fruit will fall on its own."
I know this video is only 4 years old but im glad that this is a banger anime and I hope the it gets so big that it can be compared to some of the other grates
I think the one thing I'll remember the most is Canute. He starts of as this innocent child who we can assume is a Christian, but by the end through the events that take place rejects God, declaring how he will make a paradise on Earth and will do anything to achieve it. (That how I interpret it)
Omg this reminded me of Black Sails. Askalad is totally Flint. Super smart manipulative always has a plan. If you guys haven’t seen black sails. Watch it. If you liked this you should like that.
i watched the full season of vinland saga , i was expecting a good anime , but not the masterpiece this is , from thors to the character development of thorfinn and askkeladd , i cant wait for the next season and i wont be able to enjoy other anime for some time , the last episode beeing called prologue even hypes me up more , i cant put into words how much i therally enjoyed watching this. jesus
Honestly, I'd love to see more fictional spinoffs based off of history and past, with no uncalled glorification behind it. From the few clips I've seen, I find myself unable to not watch this series. So, I'll be doing that tonight I guess.
I didn't think much of Vinland saga before watching it. Aot was always on the pedestal for me. Jojo too ironically... But holy shit. This prologue made it rise above both so quickly to me at least. And it's just the prologue. Im tempted to read the manga. I mean normally i am after finishing an anime but this was so good. I don't want to read the manga. I'm just gonna hope wit makes the next season and watch it. Maybe buy the manga later on. Yes buy it. I rarely buy and read on manga rock but this is very worth paying for
the best scene, in my opinion, is Canute's enlightenment. When he realizes the blind faith in the land of barbarians is useless, he literally challenged GOD to create a paradise on earth. Even while writing this I am getting the chills.
Vinland Saga is a once in a millennium anime. Story writing is good, well written characters etc. And the way Askalad kills everyone in that village in the snow including the kids, was unforgivable, but it reminded you that Askalad is still the same guy that killed Thors. It's heartbreaking yes but its how things were back then.
@@askeladd6115 wdym???? Vikings will be vikings am in not right. I know that Askelad killed people to protect his people but that doesnt change the fact that he killed lots of people.
Favorite character would definitely have to be Prince Canute. And, according to google images, he becomes a handsome bastard in the manga. So I guess I’m reading the manga!
I think this is going to be best anime ever no doubt about it!!! Thorfin's character is too brutal and too corrupted for this first chapter so my opinion as the son of Thor and being main character next sequels are going to make him more "good"and more like his father - I presume its going to happen after he meets a girl... and the character we all gonna hate at the end is probably going to be prince...

So rewatched this as you saw in a recent comment on a different video and
Just wow
Like binging it for a rewatch?
Seriously flies by so fast
And to me personally the very beginning is a bit slow but after that it picks up for me and I can’t help but get hooked
And the episodes just keep getting better as they reach the conclusion of what’s only considered “the prologue”
Like wow…just wow
Those emotional high moments especially for the last few episodes really got to me all over again the second time
It’s just so well done!
Can’t wait for what manga readers dub “farmland saga”
I recently recommended the series to some family
Cousins and a sister and a bf who I personally think can appreciate the series
i was just joking about ashy mad lad having a thing for killing dads and raising their sons, but the thing about a great show is that the themes and character relation arcs you'd love to see, often ends up being what you get cause the author knows how to properly tie off themes. it capitalized on the themes of messed up father-son relations, pulled ashylad and blond eren through the emotional beats i was hoping they'd reach. it even had that little moment, you know, where thorkell wonders if he should have joined thors, wondering what he'd found, what he's seeing beyond this world they're trapped in. it was just subtle enough
Askeladd gave me life.
Character development is legendary. OP is also bad ass. I REALLY LOVE THIS ANIME.
This show made you hate someone for killing a strong good man for no reason, only to make you root for him at the season finale. God level writing.
Love this series keep up the great content.
Thorkill is my waifu. No one can take that from me!
Fun fact: I live in Vinland :^)
That would be Newfoundland?
It's really tough to make anything that hits as hard as Attack on Titan but Vinland Saga does it. Askeladd and Thorkell alone are worth the price of admission, but Wit blows the animation out of the park.
Askeladd is BEST WAIFU
VERY well said
i like how the hairy priest always hugging his bucket of liquor.
@@AHBrandonReviews Yea I'm ok with waiting as long as there's hope.
Good thing I'm still young lol
this video is one year old, if i get a response until July 30th i swear i’ll read vinland saga all the way through, on july 28th i finished the anime and Vinland saga is one of the best shows ive ever seen.
I loved the ideologies and religions showcased in the prologue. It's realistic, and interactions between them feel natural. In fact, I think that's why we all like Canute's development.
DON'T SLEEP ON THIS SHOW GUYS...
I enjoy it might be a while for season 2 but I'm okay with that everything was really well done in this series
Can’t wait for season 2. We get Kurt Cobain chopping wood with some of the greatest manga character development ever
Kurt Cobain. Bruh... lmfaoooo that is so true
Lol
He transforms from Kurt Cobain to Simon Pegg!
TILL TODAY I DONT HAVE A FRIEND OBSESSED WITH THIS ANIME LIKE ME , I WONT GIVE UP
Me too looking for that friend too. Hahaha. I’ve shared this with my otKu friends but they want rom com instead
@@jessadiaz7024 well, let's be friends then hehe
wasnt expecting that much 2019 summer releases BUT HOLY FUCK THIS ANIME EASILY IS MY FAVORITE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFULLY EXECUTED
I know this video is only 4 years old but im glad that this is a banger anime and I hope the it gets so big that it can be compared to some of the other grates
Vinland Saga is the only show that I've ever said "fuck I need to read the manga for this one" and actually gone out and spent the money on the manga
Yesss same
Ryan O'Grady I just bought the first three books after the anime ended. 😂
I found a website to read it free and read it all in 2 days haha
NoSkinJohnny yeah imma buy it later for collection and having a hard copy but for now just read it for free lmao
@NoSkinJohnny Or to support the publishers???? LMAO what
Great show
RIP ragnar, he was best dad
I think the one thing I'll remember the most is Canute. He starts of as this innocent child who we can assume is a Christian, but by the end through the events that take place rejects God, declaring how he will make a paradise on Earth and will do anything to achieve it. (That how I interpret it)
Omg this reminded me of Black Sails. Askalad is totally Flint. Super smart manipulative always has a plan. If you guys haven’t seen black sails. Watch it. If you liked this you should like that.
Vinland saga was the only anime that oushed me into read the manga and actually enjoining it
Me too bruv
Imagine a studio can adapt vinland saga and Attack on Titan in a same year, holy shit
Vinland saga was one of the first animes I liked
They announced season 2🎉🎉
Anime of the year
One of the best anime I watched definitely top ten among new gen and old gen
Man I love Askeladd
Subbed
I feel this should of won anime of the year instead of demon slayer
Sick video !! what morally grey anime/manga do you recommend?
i watched the full season of vinland saga , i was expecting a good anime , but not the masterpiece this is , from thors to the character development of thorfinn and askkeladd , i cant wait for the next season and i wont be able to enjoy other anime for some time , the last episode beeing called prologue even hypes me up more , i cant put into words how much i therally enjoyed watching this. jesus
thoughts on it bieng dropped?
Askkeladd is the fucking goat
Is this just s1 vinland or s2 as well? I don't wanna get spoiled
Season 2 doesn't exists
@@AHBrandonReviews I mean like manga not season 2
Hopefully after the last season of Attack On Titan, we get season 2.
Yes buy it. I rarely buy and read on manga rock but this is very worth paying for
2:11 sojiro would be proud of this
Agree
the best scene, in my opinion, is Canute's enlightenment.
Agree mostly but disagree with the sentiment I feel from that last sentence
@@askeladd6115 wdym???? Vikings will be vikings am in not right. I know that Askelad killed people to protect his people but that doesnt change the fact that he killed lots of people.
@@toni_0116 he didn’t kill to protect his people until the last months of his life mate
And now get ready for Farmland Saga my men, blowing up your expectations
Favorite character would definitely have to be Prince Canute. And, according to google images, he becomes a handsome bastard in the manga. So I guess I’m reading the manga!
4:00 it's sad that u had to explain that.
Its a great show when you can both love and hate the main characters.
I'm just hoping all the stuff about season two being so far away isn't true. I want more of this so bad. But it must take a very long time to create something so amazing
I'll take ''this still drawing from a panel looked better in the manga'' over ''WHY DOES IT LOOK LIKE PS2 GRAPHICS'' anytime of the day.
